Since her mother vanished years before, Shae Rowan's embittered father has kept her a virtual prisoner of their Gulf Coast home. To escape his tyranny, she reluctantly agrees to marry the selfish heir to a shipping fortune. But all that changes when she meets a handsome stranger on the beach and suddenly finds herself giving in to dangerous, unyielding passion.
Phillip Payton's unconventional beliefs have left him embittered and isolated until Shae captures his lonely heart and gives him the strength to fight society's expectations. With a great storm bearing down on the island, Phillip helps his new love uncover the truth about her mother's disappearance. Discovering it could shatter what they share . . . or forge a bond that can never be broken.
The foundation of this historical romance is sweet and angst but the guts of the story made my eyeballs roll. This story felt like a melodramatic day time soap opera. So in a matter of days we have a pair of sparring high society businessmen swap fiances. Mid way through the story Phillip and Shae -- who have barely engaged in any conversations -- decide to consummate their relationship. They strip down and get horizontal, but wait! Phillip professes his love and can't possibly go any further if Shae doesn't feel the same way. I laughed out loud! The deed is done and they get instantly engaged.
The angsty who-done-it was a predictable mess. Frankly, I can easily picture Erica Kane from All My Children in this story.
I jumped from page 226 to the final chapter. Just couldn't bring myself to care about the plot. Sigh.
"A magnificent love story set among a raging hurricane, Gwyneth Atlee combines romance and mystery to create one of the most intriguing novels I have read in years. Using historical facts from the famous 1900 Hurricane that devastated Galveston, Texas, Atlee has created a tale that will leave the reader breathlessly turning pages to discover what happens next. Her incredible talent of description brings out the very sounds, smells and sights of the beach, and the violent wrath and the devastating aftermath of the storm itself. Having just returned from a vacation visit to Galveston, and having experienced first hand the beauty and mystery of the island, I can atest to Ms. Atlee's authentic descriptions. And having studied the tragic 1900 hurricane which devasted this fine old city, I also admire Ms. Atlee's research to present the historic facts along with a fascinating story. With this novel, Atlee firmly establishes herself as an author to eagerly anticipate." I could not have put it better than Sharon Galligar Chance, Wichita Falls Times Record News
Just a basic little romance novel, but set in what was clearly a fictionalized 1885 Galveston, & incorporating a combination of the various large Gulf Coast hurricanes of that period into the story line, which I'm sure was my reason for downloading this (at reduced cost). Definitely not a "bodice-ripper", but definitely an engaging story. 3 stars.
Enjoyable historical romance set on the Gulf of the coast of Texas, based in the latter part of the 19th century. There is plenty of action with floods & storms to fight & characters to love & hate, Well worth a read.
Wow! A lot happened in the course of a few days...betrayal, lies, professions, and...hurricane.
Shae annoyed me a bit. Her stubborn streak caused such havok. It's like she's programmed to completely do the opposite of what she's told. This got a bit old because it was repetitious behavior.
