I actually really hated volume one of this when I first read it then I decided to give it another chance since I enjoyed what I read of Magical Girl Site (same author, though as far as I can tell the two series only share the magical girl/horror theme) and I'm glad I did. More actual story is now finally introduced instead of just crazy violence and gore and now I'm intrigued. Things and certain characters are definitely not what they seemed or appeared to be.

4.5 STARS!!

O k a y. What the hell happened? One of the magical girl send them back to the past. Coincidence or what? Kii Kogami traveled back when everything will decide the future. It seems Tsukune is the key to the magical girl and apocalypse? There are still so much mysteries and questions. Argh!

I seriously can’t get enough of this series. I’m liking it way way more than I thought I was going to. The story line is amazing. The twists that it puts on old genres really makes it interesting again. I love the art. Everything is lovingly drawn, even when terrible terrible things are happening. (I’m still not entirely convinced he’s ever seen boobs in person though).

This is where you start getting a lot of the meat of the story. You see more of the person that is responsible for creating these “magical girls” in the first place. You get a lot more backstory on some of the characters. (You find out why the main male character acts the way he does and you find out that the main female character has a lot of dark secrets to hide. Also is it strange I’m starting to like this bully?) I love that we’re getting to know more about them because when the first book starts they just kind of throw you into the blood and gore and don’t really tell you much about the people in the story.

The fan service is almost non existent in this issue but boy howdy do they make it count when it happens. They take full advantage of the, ahem, full chested character at some points.

That being said, I REALLY don’t like that the main focus of this book is time travel. I hate time travel in stories. Hate. It. It’s a lazy way to get characters out of a situation where they would be sure to die but you don’t want them to. There has to have been some other way to get the kids out of the situation in book two and get more information about what was going on. That being said though, this does an exceptionally good job at handling it (they didn’t go the slapstick humor way, they actually took the situation seriously). Well other than the cop. (I hope he’s gone for good after this one I seriously don’t like him for serious it’s not ok to perv on an 8 year old because you know her in the future.

I’m still highly recommending this to any manga fans, especially horror manga fans. But be careful this one jumps from the implied sexual violence in the second book straight to actual attempted sexual violence. It may be upsetting to some readers. Also, gallons of blood and gore but I think that goes without saying at this point. Looking forward to book four.

Content warnings: Attempted rape, child abuse, spousal abuse, suicide, gore, body horror

So, this series is turning into unapologetic edgy nonsense, which I can respect. However, I'm kind of getting tired of it. Especially when it comes to rent-a-cop, and I somehow doubt that he'll be biting it any time soon.

There is time travel mentioned in the spoiler, wherein our characters get sent back to the year 2002. It is not addressed at all in the sense that the characters do see the younger versions of themselves and it doesn't cause massive psychic damage. But that's really such a small slice of why I can't be recommending this series.

Will I continue reading it? Maybe. There are enough interesting details and mysteries set up to keep me invested.

Within the third volume of Magical Girl Apocalypse, I experience increased delight regarding the narrative. The intricate plot twists and turns, particularly the time traveling aspect, have piqued my interest. Revisiting the relationship between Kogami and Tsukune in their youth, and witnessing its evolution into a partnership between older characters, has proven to be a compelling subplot. As I progress through the stories, I observe a notable enhancement in the magical girls' abilities, which serves to heighten my anticipation and engagement, wanting me to continue reading.

Kii and a few companions are thrown back in time by a magical girl.

Thank goodness - this third volume is back to being excellent (the second sucked, largely due to the perverted cop part). This story answers some questions, including who may be behind the magical girl apocalypse. The art is great and changes as needed for violent scences or more cartoony panels. I'll definitely read the fourth one.

This series is seriously gross. I didn’t really care much about the gore (and it is super gory) but there are multiple rape attempts/scenes and one of the main characters is a necrophilic rapist and pedophile. This series is frankly disgusting and you shouldn’t waste your time on it or anything else the author has written. How the hell did this get published???

tw: rape, gore, necrophilia, pedophilia, violence

This volume did something interesting, with time travel and it shows that possibly the Magical Girls have been an issue for a while, if not in the planning stages. I also enjoyed the further development and raised stakes for our main characters, I will say however that there is a lot less action in this one which I both appreciate and feel a tad let down by. But all the same I’m enjoying this series.

It was pretty interesting to find out the cause of the magical girls falling from the sky, and the whole twist of being teleported back into the past of the characters, before everything went to hell. It brought up a whole new way of thinking for everything in my opinion. For everything that happened and how it was caused, it makes you wonder, just HOW it got to be that destructive.

I just wished they dropped this rape trend that keeps going on. Like the world is ending and in a shitty way at that, I'd think men would have bigger worries than getting layed with unwilling women.

Said that, this picked up more than the second volume and the main plot got more intriguing so I will be continuing for now.

!!Tw for attempted rape and I also think this was the volume that had some pedo stuff in it!!
stay safe while consuming media y'all :)

That was an interesting plot twist.
Also I hate the rapist cop dude, like he keeps getting worst with every volume and I just wish he would get exploded already.

Great, so now there's time traveling too? And the innocent one that I thought would die first is behind all this? WTF? And the pervy cop... Ugh! Why can't he just die??
A mind-boggling series!

Sabia que Tsukune era un personaje clave, era demasiado sospechoso que siendo como era no estuviera muerta ya.
Y ese policía tiene una suerte xd me cae tan mal

Whelp. The Time Travel thing definitely took the story in an interesting direction. I love how we got to see some backstory for our main guy character. :D

This volume was a huge change of pace with many surprises. It involves the same characters, but we learn new things about them. One volume to go.

This review is going to fill in for Vol. 1-3. This is a gore comic and a boring one. You don't get any real story development until Vol. 3, it's predictable and just silly. I'm hoping it picks up (I got Vol. 4-9 from library already so I'll finish them), but my hopes aren't up.

Kii Kogami's live has been a living hell since the magical girls arrived bringing death and destruction with them. His school was destroyed but he and a few other students escaped. They finally found a safe haven at a shopping mall. Their haven didn't stay secure for very long and they were once again forced to run. In all of the chaos this time their group was split in half!

Kii is desperate to get to Tsukune's side and protect her but he has a slight problem. One of the magical girls sent him back in time by 10 years. He and the others with him are back in the year 2002 and the peacefulness of that time is surreal after all the chaos. Will they be able to go back to 2012? Do they even want to go back? Is there a connection between the two time periods?

This volume had a lot of surprises in its pages. Some questions have been answered from previous volumes, many new questions have been raised. The majority of this volume is in 2002 and this provides a unique look at some of the character's pasts. Learning about their pasts sheds new light on their actions in the current year. A tiny hint is given about the origins of the magical girls. Not everything is quite the way it seems.

I can't wait for the next volume to be released. The only downside to this series is waiting 3 months in between volumes! I still recommend this series to anyone who isn't squeamish. It definitely has its share of blood and guts but there is also a healthy dose of humor and a great plot to go with the gore!

This volume of Magical Girl Apocalypse went in a different direction than I'd expected, which isn't inherently a bad thing. But the fact that it did so, for the sole purpose of working in a very convenient plot device...that's a little harder to swallow. Especially because the bulk of this installment is taken up by that particular sequence--a sequence which, by its very nature, brings the current events of the story to a full stop.

True, we get some character development with Kaede and Kii (and we learn that the cop is even more of a scumbag than we'd previously seen), so it's not a complete hijacking of the story. And the plot device that's revealed, while a bit too convenient, at least sheds some light on the invasion of magical girls. There are still a lot of unanswered questions, but it's a start.

Overall, this isn't a bad volume, per se, but it definitely doesn't feel as momentous as the previous two. The ending leaves me optimistic for the next volume, if nothing else.

I've gotta give the author this much credit -- just when you think he can't go any further over the top, he goes even further over the top. If Elfenlied turned the dial up to 11 on graphic violence, Kentaro Sato has twisted it so far to the right that it's broken off in his hand, and yet he keeps spinning it. At this point it's gone beyond offensive to the point of funny, and beyond funny to the point that it's offensive again.

That took an interesting turn, I'm still curious as to what happens next. My only complaint is I kind of don't like how some characters get killed off so easily without really getting a chance to know them so when they die it's less sympathetic. But other than that the story is very enticing and I wish my bookstore had more in stock so I can keep up lol

Dammit! They had to bring time travel into it and now I'm hooked! I still don't like the rent-a-cop guy and some of the more gratuitous bits of fan service, but little by little the story is coming together in an interesting fashion...
