The world went to hell two weeks ago and twenty-one-year-old, Avery Whitlock, just watched it happen.
After an epidemic swept across America like a biblical plague, the government leapt into the fray with the release of the MONE vaccine. What was meant to bring salvation to the remaining survivors instead brought damnation. Human mutations began within days of the drug’s release and the Withered Ones were born. People not alive but not entirely dead either. They walked the streets, unblinking and unaware. A zombie, for all intents and purposes, but nothing like anyone anticipated.
Growing up on the streets taught Avery how to care for herself, but no amount of self defense classes at the Y could have prepared her for the outbreak of deadly gangs, a corrupt government bent on using her blood for experiments and the depths to which desperate people would go to survive. She soon discovered that it was not the Withered Ones that she needed to fear, but those still human. The ones who knew how to put a gun to her head when they wanted something from her.
Avery was forced to decide how far would she be willing to go to survive just one more day.

What the hell, man?? Can I catch a break with these sob fests? Again...I'm torn about something that happens ---- I don't know if I can go on with the next book when it is released because I think my heart just withered and died.
Great book ---- especially because the heroine wasn't some whiny wimpy waste of time!
It's definitely a different take on the zombie apocalypse and yeah...I'll read the next in the series.
I've always believed that when the Zombie apocalypse occurs, it's going to be living, breathing humans, not the dead, that are going to be the biggest source of fear. I mean, if there are super quick 28 Days Later style runners, they are going to cause some problems. But it's that feeling of never being safe when you're with other people that would be the hardest to deal with in the long term.
So, from the outset, I knew this book was on the right track for me. Miles chucks you straight in with some bloody violence, tense and unsettling atmosphere, and 'Withered Ones'-not your average zombie. And I liked it. The main character, Avery, is resilient and perceptive, but not one of those suddenly-in-a-crisis-i-am-the-damn-terminator-and-i-never-make-any-mistakes kind of person. She's all too human. I think that should be the point, and for Miles, it is.
Beware....spoilers below...
I didn't like the ending. Not just because I could guess it was coming from early on, but because I didn't want it to go like that. Again, I guess that's the point. Shit happens. Things don't end the way you want them to. But i'm not a fan of books finishing with only the super special person left alive. She's not even especially likeable and now we have to start again in the next novel. The only one I really wanted to know more about is dead. So i'll pick up the next in the series but i'll have to see how it goes. I'm not convinced just yet.
Many thanks to Amy Miles, Netgalley, and Red Coat PR for this copy in exchange for an honest review.
Okay, I love the post-apocalyptic/dystopian storylines and this book had me on the edge of my seat. Seriously, I could not stop turning the pages. I NEEDED to know what was going to happen to Avery. It has taken me a long time to write this review because seriously, I needed to digest the entire story, and I needed to recover a little. I mean, my heart was a shattered broken mess on the floor at one point!
The character buildup and emotional buildup throughout this book caused me to flip through the pages so quick, I wished I was a speed reader! I don't want to give away too many spoilers on this one, but if you love post-apocalyptic, this book is definitely for you. It being the first book in the series, it has some serious potential, and I definitely look forward to the next book. There are so many different directions this story can take, and I am ready to be with Avery on this journey! She started off somewhat weak, but became stronger and stronger as the book went on, and I loved that.
If you loved Until the End of the World, you WILL love this book!
I received this ARC from Red Coat Publishing and the author in exchange for an honest review. Wow! And where can I get the second installment, if one exists? A post-apocalyptic, horror, creepy, sci-fi story that captures the reader’s attention and includes such depth is a rare find among books. The characters are complex, and the author keeps most of them shrouded in mystery, which adds to the eerie atmosphere surrounding this story. The main character is not the typical hero/anti-hero and shows a good range of strengths and weaknesses that make her believable and likeable in her own way. The plot is straight forward, but the author takes good care to create a sense of mystery and adds elements of horror. The writing is excellent. The reader feels present and a part of the story. It includes the right amount of internal dialogue from the main character but enough is left unsaid to keep the reader’s curiosity. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and was delighted by the author skill to weave in just the right amount of horror that had me bury myself a little deeper beneath my blanket. I would recommend it to anyone, who enjoys zombie, post-apocalyptic and horror stories.
Seriously. What the hell did i just read?! I dont even understand what the frak was happening majority of the time! I was reading... But not really reading it. More like just flipping the pages til i got done. I struggled. And struggled some more to hit that last page. I was so close to throwing this in my "dnf" shelf. Cause shit. The heroine was Class-A stupid. Only great thing about this is the cover. Now that is badass. But the storyline? Charcters? Nah-uh. Not feeling it! I think 2 stars is abit far-fetched but hey.. It is what it is :-) I will not be reading book #2.
Wither is author Amy Miles' breakneck paced 'zombie' novel. It's her first foray into horror/thriller territory, and in my opinion she did wonderfully. There are truly terrifying aspects of this novel.
Avery is hiding out in the hospital people are getting sick, and becoming 'withered'. The government has essentially fallen, and gangs rule the cities. When the hospital is raided by gangs Avery is attacked. Her savior is soldier by the name of Cable. Not one to trust anyone Avery flees the first chance she gets. The first few chapters Avery spends more time running from worse and worse situations. There is something about her, something that the gangs, and remaining 'government' wants. Life has never been easy on Avery, even before fled mother's sick bed at the end of the world. It's left Avery, bitter, and closed off. To some readers Avery's cold attitude and me for me ways might be a turn off. I found it very realistic. Miles' shows Avery at her very worst, and takes on her journey as she becomes more. More than a girl who closes herself off. More than a girl who only cares for herself.
Amy Miles is fantastic at writing romance. It's definitely a strong and important of the story. The first person Avery encounters outside of the hospital is Cable. And watching their relationship yo-yo was probably one of my favorite things about this novel. What can I say, I like gore and romance. Cable is the opposite of Avery. He's filled with hope. He's cautious where Avery is not. He cares for others, where Avery tries very hard not to. It's very interesting how their personalities evolve as a result of their relationship.
The descriptions in this book are intense. From the action, the world building, the Withered Ones, I was totally immersed in the world. It's a dangerous world, and the body count is high. It's awesome! Amy doesn't hold back, at all. She puts these characters through the ringer. Those left standing are going to be tough when this story is told.
The reason Avery is running, is still so open, it will be interesting to see how the story unfolds. The Withered ones are evolving, humans are getting desperate, and Avery is still very much a risk. I for one will be first in line to read Resurrect when it comes out! I recommend this for fans who like the Forest of Hands and Teeth series. It can be read by mature YA readers. This book was gifted to me.
Make sure that you are fully prepared for the devastating story enclosed within these pages. When you decide to attempt this daunting quest it will be with the understanding that you are about to be moved in every way possible through this journey, and it the tornado of emotions will be debilitating to say the least. Wither is not your average story, and it will cross every boundary taking you to the depths of despair and the reality of what it truly means to survive. Avery's story is not one to envy or relate it will mark you with an experience unlike one you have ever known. Starting just a few weeks following a biblical plague that over ran the world; Avery is a young woman just trying to exist. Refusing to leave the one person she knows on this on this Earth; Avery willing remains in the path of one of the ruthless gangs that organized following the deadly aftermath. Her survival is possible due to the quick protection of Cable, and unlikely relationship start and ends just as quickly. She will continue on a roller coaster that will take her in and out many different enemies grasp. Although, all of this is just the beginning of Avery's journey. Her mission is without destination or even a particular goal. That is other than to remain breathing and out of the hands of the remaining survivors that are almost as crazy as the withered ones. This is a ruthless and vile world that has very few allies, and enemies are countless from every direction possible. As survival seems to drift further and further out of reach readers will find themselves absorbed into this desolate story. Avery will make several wrong turns, but the reality of this story is regardless of the turn danger and death await just around every corner. In this sinister world Avery will manage a few survivors to accompany her along the way, but this world is merciless and even those will come at a cost. Wither is just the beginning, and while I have no clear idea as to what is in store it is obvious that Avery's grim existence is the only guarantee. I firmly believe Amy Mile's soul intention in Wither was to create a story that would "rock your world, and leave a mark", she succeeded!!
It had a pretty action-packed start and a lot of stuff happened, apparently. Unfortunately the main character spent most of her time being knocked out or locked up and pretty much nothing gets explained. People are turning into zombies or something, people are stealing each others blood for reasons and according to the characters there's some epic love-story going on this entire time, only it was kind of hard to see because the characters kept telling me what happened, instead of the author showing me.
I tried. I have it 100 pages before I noped out of there, but me and this book just didn't click. I chose this book because a few reviewers mentioned a strong protagonist, which I love. As it stands, Avery didn't seem strong to me. She seemed petulant, entitled, aggressive, and stupid. I can't follow a character when I feed mild to strong irritation every time she opens her mouth. So sorry, book, I'm out.
I was first attracted to this book because of the cover. After seeing the blurb, I knew I wanted to read it. It has an original spin on the zompoc genre. I believe Wither has the basis for a great story, but it didn't make it there for me. I was unable to understand the cause and effect of situations, behaviors, attitudes, etc. The things the characters did just didn't make any sense to me. I think this is one of those books that will produce very varied opinions so you may want to check it out for yourself.
Absolutely Amazing! Intensely twisted take on your classic zombie novel. Edge of your seat action packed ride of epic proportions. Amy is at her badassery best with Wither! You're forced to go through so many emotions it leaves you begging for more while wanting to be alone with a giant box of chocolates and tissues.
wither by Amy Miles. A zombie, for all intents and purposes, but nothing like anyone anticipated. an absolutely fantastic read. I loved the story. could see this as a film or tv series. lots of fire and blood. this is a must read and I would highly recommend this book. 5*. would give more if I could.
"This world isn't lost until we give up on it and I'm not about to do that."
If you're a fan of well written, end of the world filled with zombies, and blurred lines of good and bad, drop everything and pick up Wither. I enjoyed every second of this book and am definitely looking forward to more. Action packed from the first page to the last, Wither is a book of survival. When the world comes crumbling down, who will make it out alive and what will be the cost.
Avery Whitlock never had an easy life, even before the world went to hell. A father that walked out on her when she was a kid and a mother who never really cared, Avery is bitter and world weary. It's been a week since life has changed. "Death swept across our land like a biblical plague." And while the government tried to find an answer, they created another problem. Neither dead or alive, the Withered Ones roam.
Quarantines and martial law, the Withered Ones are the least of everyone's worry. When a cryptic message alludes to a possible cure, desperation and fear causes people to change, friends turn into enemies and people are enslaved for the good of all mankind. Avery will have to grow and learn to trust others even though every instinct she has tells her not to.
Avery ~ "None of those things matter anymore, Cable. There is no good left in this world. Only greed. Only murder and evil and nothingness." Cable ~ "You're wrong....You and me, we're still good."
Avery grows in so many ways throughout the book. From a mildly bratty girl to a strong young woman, she learns to let others in, to feel more than she's let herself in a long time. Cable slowly worms his way in to a heart she'd believed cold and hardened. And there's no way for the reader not to fall in love with him too.
Along the way, allegiances will be made, the world will change, and only the strong survive. Because the Withered Ones are evolving and the world might never be safe.
Wither is everything an apocalyptic novel should be. It’s dark, gory, violent, it’s full of action. There’s also a touch of romance, because, let’s face it, we would all need a little distraction from the crappy world falling apart around us. It’s definitely for a more mature audience, because of some mild language and scenes containing descriptive violence.
Let’s talk zombies. The Withered Ones are unlike anything I’ve ever read before. They’re not the mindless brain-eating machines that we’ve all come to know and love, and I’m dying to see what they will becomes in the future of the series! It’s hard to put a unique spin on such a classic genre, and that’s why I will highly recommend this, without any qualms, to all horror readers.
The characters are a good mix of loyal, creepy, conniving, vicious and sweet. Avery, herself, can show all of the above traits. She starts off as being naive, and extremely bitter. She definitely got under my skin, but I held on to the hope that she would grow as a character. I wasn’t disappointed. She matures and is given plenty of opportunity to work on those trust issues. By the end, I was content with the path that she was on. She brought me hope.
I also want to applaud Amy Miles for her ability to kill characters. It is a necessary evil when it comes to the end of the world. We can’t all come through it unscathed, so she’s just keepin’ it real.
A copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
It is a great take on the zombie genre. I think that most zombie books and shows always have zombies as the main focal point when really people tend to be the bigger threat. This novel addresses that part of the apocalypse and really makes it terrifying. It is a very suspenseful story with realistic outcomes and a little bit of romance thrown in. My only issue with the book is that sometimes it was hard to follow who was speaking at times in conversations, but I would definitely recommend this book to any apocalypse lovers!
First, I'd encourage the writer to keep writing. I get the impression from the fact that this was a free Kindle book and the quality of the writing that she's an Indie writer, so good for her for putting herself out there.
That said, it wasn't the best apocalyptic book that I've read or Zombie one. Some things that it had going for it were that it was action packed, an easy read that went fast, and had some characters with promise. Some things it did not have going for it were that the characters never quite seemed to take off and go from "showing promise" to "great characters I cared about," the plot was hard to figure out (more on that in a moment), and the main character was flat enough that I had a hard time telling she was a she for like the first ten percent of the book and then was like, "oh okay, it's a girl."
The plot was difficult to figure out because apocalyptic books tend to fall into a couple of different categories and I couldn't place this one. It was like the writer wanted the main character to be some kind of savior of the human race but then changed her mind at a point in the story. Another type are those that are more a take of the triumph of the human spirit in the face of the end of the world, and that didn't quite fit either. Maybe this is what people refer to when they're talking about a writer struggling to find their voice?
In any case, it wasn't terrible, so I hope she keeps writing and sticks with it. The world can use good zombie novels!
This book completely took over my life for a couple days! I read it during ever spare moment I had and I don’t regret it at all! It had me hooked from the very beginning and I loved its fast pace and plot.
Wither contains everything that an apocalypse novel should; violence, action, romance, great story line and of course…zombies! Amy is an amazing writer and she doesn’t disappoint in this book either with fantastic characters and everything else. Though I do not recommend this book for younger readers.
I love that the book began in the early parts of the apocalypse, it made it more believable and fascinating. The outbreak itself was creative and you never really knew what was going to happen next, just wonderful!
At first I wasn’t too impressed with Avery, she was just too ungrateful and I didn’t like that at all. But as the book continued she did as well, and with the continuation came the understanding of why she was that way. Avery turns out to be quite an awesome person that I ended up connecting with. And just to put this out there…I did not like the ending! NOT because it was horrible or anything, but because it made me cry my freaking eyes out!!!!!
Cannot WAIT to read the next book, great job Amy Miles!!
Wither is the story of Avery, a young girl who is trying to survive in a post apocalyptic world overrun by zombie like creatures. She starts out the book alone, scared, and very sick. Through a series of events, she winds up becoming a member of a small group who is attempting to flee to a safer locale. She finds herself in precarious situations throughout the story as is expected in any story in this genre. At one point, I actually thought it was going to down a path that's somewhat outside the usual swim lane of stories such as these, the author seemed to veer off that direction. It wasn't clear to me if the author was trying to portray some epic love story in all the chaos. However, it came more across like one of those friends with benefits type situations, which I actually felt was a little unnecessary and didn't add much to the overall story. Didn't really feel like there was much character development.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Red Coat PR!
A plague, a faulty vaccine that makes things worse, non-trustworthy people around every corner and zombies with a different persona than we are used to seeing. Oh, and romance. I probably would not have picked this book had I known how much of it revolved around a budding romance but then I found myself deeply yearning for Avery to find someone to replace her loneliness. There is really good character development, just be careful who you get attached to. I definitely want to find about more about the withered. They are definitely not your typical zombie.
I write this review in the midst of COVID-19 isolation and find that like in the book, I fear the mindset of the healthy people around me almost more than the sickness. It is sad what we turn into when we focus solely on self-survival and leave compassion behind. The first threat against my loved ones will completely change that mindset as it did for Avery.
I asked for this book and I got way more than I bargained for. The mental images seemed to have scarred my brain as the horror of this novel gave way. Not much can be said for apocalyptic zombie type novels. Cover to cover this book is strictly about how to survive and the graphic images and bloodletting.....ugh. I couldn't quite get a sense for the characters since they dropped like flies. Avery being the main character but she was knocked out, drugged, a good bit of the time. The secondary characters don't really help you see the whole picture. If you like horror/zombie books then you will probably love this one. I gave it three stars. Too much blood, guts, and wormy gore.
I have watched a lot of post-apocalyptic movies and TV shows and I've read a lot of post apocalyptical books. This one by far really got to me. It just amazes me how quick people can turn on one another in times of trouble. I was really hoping Cable and Avery survived to the end. I do feel her pain I know what it's like to lose a loved one though not having to put my loved one down myself but the pain was just as strong. Even though Avery is a very strong woman my heart breaks for her knowing she's got to continue on by herself. I don't know what book to hold but I sure look forward to reading it.
I enjoyed this story, but found it lacking in enough zombie action for my taste. It started off strong and had a good ending that didn't leave me hanging (I especially appreciated how Cable's storyline was tied-up) with the need to rush to the second book in the series. The middle was a little slower paced with some additional characters thrown in that I felt weren't that necessary to the story, but I did enjoy the main character enough that I will probably continue on with the series at some point.
Pretty good! Not 'exactly' another zombie apocalypse story, at least. Different enough to hold my attention in a crowded genre. There are some familiar tropes but I think the first person storytelling helps to get by them. Also it's a female lead character. Things don't go right for her much either, and while there are a few deus ex machina moments, by and large it's one cluster after another. Which (for me) I found refreshing.
This is an ok book. The story was interesting enough but it always feels lacking. It was very disjointed at times and things seemed to just happen out of the blue without explanation. I guess the author was trying to make the reader feel the confusion the characters feel but it doesn't work. I'd like to see what's going to happen to the main character but I'm not sure I'll continue on with the series. The book is just kind of meh.
Wither by Amy Miles was such an interesting take on “zombies” and what could happen at the end of the world. When I first started reading Wither, I wasn’t quite sure what to think about what was happening. Amy Miles definitely set the storyline up in a way that as a reader, I got to experience what was happening as it went. There wasn’t just a simple explanation and the more I read, the more I learned what was going on. I found I really enjoyed that and it made my experience seem as realistic as possible. I will also like to point out how much action was in this book. Sometimes it can be too much but with Wither, it made the entire book better. All those encounters made my heart race because I just knew something bad was going to happen! Overall this was a great start to a series, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the story will unfold in the next one.
I found parts of the story difficult to follow, having to go back a few paragraphs to see if I missed something or misread something. Some of it was engaging and interesting but some seemed repetitive.
When I first started to read this, I wasn't sure I would be able to finish it. I am so glad that I did. I became immersed in the story and didn't want to put it down. It's a great read and I look forward to the next story.
Wow! Talk about a roller coaster... I was unprepared for the emotional journey that this book took me on. Not your stereotypical zombie apocalypse fiction, Amy Miles weaves her magic once again through these pages and allows you to follow Avery on her path. It left me speechless. So very good.
