Nico I spent four years in prison for something I didn’t do. I missed the birth of my son and was unable to save his mother from a vicious ex-boyfriend. I am not the man I was when I went in. Too much has happened. Now, with the help of a group of people I hardly know, I’m trying make a new start for myself and my son. I never expected to meet someone like Gabe. He’s funny, kind, and so protective. I’m not used to someone having my back like he does. Now I just have to allow myself to trust again. Gabe Being a Navy SEAL was supposed to be my life. Then I messed up and had to leave or face a court martial. Lucky for me, my former senior chief, Marco D’Angelo, has a job waiting for me when I get out. The job at Angel Security comes with a group of men and women who have quickly become like family to me. Meeting Nico is a revelation. I thought I would only love once in my life. It turns out I was wrong. Nico’s sweet nature, hidden beneath his gruff, tattooed exterior, draws me in and I’m lost. If only I can get him to believe in me.
Amazing book, and an even better experience if you've read her previous works - you'll see a ton of cameos of the previous couples. Also, I laughed out loud at the Kelly Fox alligator reference - IYKYK. :) Heartfelt characters, an edge of adrenaline with the operations, a healthy dose of spice, and the sweetness you know you're going to get with an Evie book. Highly recommend!
This was a fairly low-angst, sweet story of two people falling in love and figuring out how to be together. I liked both Nico and Gabe as characters. And I absolutely adored Cody (Nico's son) so it was really sweet. It was quick, and kept me mostly connected throughout.
It was designated as a standalone, and for me not having a background with this author's works it was, but it also felt like I was possibly missing a lot of information but not reading the other interconnected series. So that's just something to not. It's probably a richer read with some of that knowledge in hand.
I absolutely loved Nico and Gabe’s story. Nico’s situation broke my heart and I was full of pride for him and all of what he accomplished through this book. Both of these men have their baggage but part of any couple’s story is sharing the load. Absolutely worth a read. I would love a little snippet somewhere down the road of Cody actually living with his Dad Nico and Gabe even more. This family of people with Angel Security is some found family at its best.
Omg this book was really good. As soon as I started couldn’t put it down. My heart for Nico but I’m glad he got his son Cody back. Gabe was so attuned to Nico and his needs. I love this couple. I’m happy I found this book!
DNF @34 % - This isn't bad, but I'm just not engaged. So many characters from previous books I just don't know, and I'm not feeling the connection between the MCs.
The story of Nico and Gabe drew me in from the beginning, invested in their relationship, and the healing of these two men, damaged by their pasts. Nico is just released from prison, father of a 4 year old boy whose mother was killed while Nico was still in prison. Cody, his son, has been staying with his uncle and his partner. Nico’s goal is to gain custody of his son, but there are many hurdles to overcome first, the primary one is finding a place of his own to live and a job. He meets Gabe through mutual acquaintances and Gabe offers him a room in his home and facilitates a trial job on the Angel Security team where he helps thwart a kidnapping plot.
Gabe annd Nico anre both gay and there is a definite physical attraction between the two, but both have events in their pasts that make them shy away from any relationship. Gabe is very good at reading Nico’s body language, always checking with him before touching him, aware of Nico’s tension after always needing to watch his back in prison. Gabe intuitively picks up when Nico is spiraling or having a panic attack, able to talk him down and recenter himself. Nico is learning to trust again, learning that not everyone wants something in return when offering help. He knows Gabe has his back, and Gabe is the only one who makes Nico feel safe. Nico loves his son and is learning to be a good father to him, and Gabe is also very good with Cody, caring for the little boy almost as much as he does for Nico.
Not all goes smoothly, there are dangers to Nico and Cody linked to Nico’s past, as well as dangers to Gabe with his work, but the relationship continues to grow as the two men find that they have found a new love, one worth trusting, protecting and growing, leading to a growing found family and a new family unit for Gabe, Nico and Cody.
There are times of laughter, times of tears, realizations that sometimes therapy may be needed to work through past traumas, and always a tight knit group of men that have each other’s backs at all times, encouraging and supporting each other, and through it all is the presence of a little boy with connections to these men, an extra addition to this found family of the members of Angel Security.
There are many possibilities for more books with the members of the Angel Security team, and I look forward to following them. Characters, settings and events are realistic and relatable, keeping this reader, at least, interested over the course of the book, anticipating events to lead to a HEA. An interesting and enjoyable read for me.
**Mind the trigger warnings in the front of the book**
This was my first Evie McGlynn book and she could teach a masterclass in emotional depth and storytelling. Behind the gritty realities the characters are dealing with is a stunningly beautiful love story of two broken men learning to trust and love after so much was taken from them.
Nico and Gabe are two men scarred by their pasts and their mistakes, and they both carry wounds that run deep. Nico is trying to rebuild his life for the sake of his son, and Gabe is learning how to redefine who he is. When they meet, it's not insta-love, there aren't fireworks - it's something much more gentle and profound. It's the slow build-up of a friendship that turns into more, that is based on a solid foundation of trust and respect, and becomes the kind of love that heals.
This story shines because of how the author balances the darkness with the tenderness. The sweetness of Nico and Gabe's connection feels like a balm but it is deeply earned. Their vulnerability is real. Their fears and hesitations are heartbreaking. But watching them overcome those fears together is why their story is so powerful.
The family they have formed with the other members of Angel Security is beautiful. This group of warriors that embraces Nico and makes him on theirs, without question or reservation, adds heart to the story. And it helps show that healing doesn't happen in isolation - it happens when you're surrounded by people who see you, believe in you, and fight for you.
If you love romance that's grounded in emotional realism, with characters who love and fight for each other and truly embody the 'no man left behind' mentality, this book is for you. Beautiful, gritty, and ultimately hopeful, this story will stay with you long after the final page.
[I received an advanced copy of this book. All reviews and ratings are my own.]
This book/series is a spin-off from Evie’s Down the Shore Series. To get the most enjoyment out of this book it’ll be best to read that series first as so many of different characters that are part of that series, are also part of Nico & Gabe’s story. I really enjoyed this book and thought that it was a good start to the Angel Security Series. Nico & Gabe’s love story was an amazing journey of acceptance, healing, support & love. I really liked how their relationship progressed as it felt very natural. Both of them have been through so much and I’m really glad that they found each other. Man, my heart broke for what happened to Nico while he was in prison and to make matters even worse he was locked up for something he didn’t actually do.
I think Evie did an amazing job dealing with trauma and the associated triggers. I shed a few tears during the scene when Cody jumped on Nico’s bed to wake him up the morning after he’d gotten out of prison, and he flipped him over and was holding him down because he was triggered and didn’t remember that he was no longer in prison. Man, you could feel Nico’s utter despair at scaring Cody, even though it was by accident. I love just the Angel Security found family and the lengths that they’d not only go for each other but those in need is absolutely amazing. I’m really looking forward to reading more from this series as it continues, as well as more books from Evie McGlynn in the future. I’d recommend this book, series and author to others.
******I received a complimentary copy of this book through GRR. I would still happily review this book even if I purchased it myself. My thoughts and feelings about this book are completely unbiased******
I love a series where the stories revolve around a security team, so as soon as I read the blurb, I knew I would enjoy it and I was not disappointed. Nico had been let down from the moment he made the wrong choice, 4 years on, he has been released from prison, has a son, Cody that he has to build a life with and the man behind Cody's mom's death is still on the loose. Nico could not get a break. Gabe worked at Angel Security an ex Navy Seal, he was tasked to show Nico the ropes but there was something about Nico that chipped away his walls and he wanted to do everything he could to make his life easier. Yes there are a lot of characters in this story, and whilst they are established couples from the Down the Shores series, this did not detract me from the story. I own this series and Fallen Angel has made me move them higher on my TBR. Gabe was a BFG until circumstances made him see red, his caring nature gave Nico the support he needed and Nico helped Gabe learn he could love again. Whilst this is low angst there are scenes that some readers could find upsetting, but the author handled these scenes with sensitivity. Cody, Nico's son was a little cutie and I loved his bubbly nature. His enthusiasm was infectious and I had a smile of my face when he reminded me of things that my son did at that age. As this is a story about a security team expect action and camaraderie and with a whole set of characters to choose from, I am looking forward to seeing who is next to have their story told
I've read all of Evie McGlynn's work and enjoyed every single one, but Fallen Angel might just be my favorite. It’s an action-adventure novel that blends found family with a slow-burn romance—both of which feel natural given Nico’s circumstances. Fresh out of prison and still finding his footing in the outside world, Nico isn’t in a place for an instant relationship, and the story respects that. The timing of both the romance and the physical relationship feels intentional and well-paced, allowing both men to work through their emotional baggage without relying on instalove or magical sexual healing—something I really appreciated.
The first half of the book seemed a bit exposition-heavy, though, and dragged a little for me - which could very well be a me thing = but once it hit the halfway mark, the story took off and had my full attention.
Nico’s son, Cody, is an absolute delight—adorable, but age-appropriate. Hes not written as a mini adult; he has tantrums, meltdowns, and all the ups and downs you’d expect from a child his age, making him feel authentic and real.
Also, fans of Kelly Fox will get a fun surprise with a clever shoutout to her books!
While Fallen Angel can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend starting with Moonlight and reading in order of publication—you won’t regret it!
This is a spin-off from the Down The Shore series; however, you don't need to read it to understand this book. But I do recommend it since the characters do make an appearance and makes it more fun. Especially, the book Sunrise since part of the story in Fallen Angel is derived from it but once again it is only recommend, the author makes a great job of providing the essential information for the plot to be understood. Nico and Gabe (never Gabriel) are two guys trying who are trying to overcome a painful past. My heart ached for them, especially Nico. He was dealt such a horrible hand, causing both deep emotional pain and trauma. (the author did a great job of writing his trauma very respectfully and with care). But that does not stop him from trying to learn to be the best dad for his son and start his life anew. Nico and Gabe's road to HEA was slow paced, from friends to lovers, but it was perfect for them since they needed to heal. Together they faced their past trauma, giving each other the much needed support, love, and patience. There's also action, suspense, and humor blended in perfectly with all of the heart ache, taking you on an emotional rollercoaster. I can't wait for the next book, doesn't matter who the next MC will be. All of the newly introduced secondary characters were intriguing and loveable.
DNF@58%. I feel like I've been reading this book forever. I've never read a book where the author tried so painstakingly to build a foundation for the couple, only for them to have no chemistry at all. I think there was just too much minutiae that the story ended up dragging. On top of that, the characters were too 'perfect,' always knowing the right thing to say and bending over backwards to accommodate each other that the story just sailed along and never gained any real traction. Why are grown men always crying? Like all of them, for the slightest thing. Gabe's nephew reaction to the kidnapping attempt was totally overdone, and after all of that when Gabe asked Nico if he could kiss him, I was like ugh, why? It was completely out of nowhere, just like them suddenly noticing each other's bodies and imagining each other in bed. Huh? There was nothing about these two men that made me want to see them fall in love. They were just two guys sharing a space. And the fact that their kiss and intimate conversations were shared over Comms with the other Security guys listening in was cringe. I wanted to stick around for Cody, but sorry little buddy.
Fallen Angel by Evie McGlynn 4.5 stars A good book with all the emotions of starting life once again. Just an fyi I love the authors books in the past and jumped at this one when it was released.
Nico and Gabe begin their story in the first of the Angel Security series.
Oh a great quote at the start from one of Becca Fitzpatrick books, yeah Ive read Hush Hush and highly recommend it for an F/M book.
Nico 31 yrs had spent 4 years in jail but now out early he starts his life again with his 4 year old Cody. He was thankful he'd had friends for Cody while he was away. Gabe was an ex navy seal and worked at Angel Security’s, friends in common he met Nico. I thought I recognized some of the characters as this is a spinoff series. A lot is happening in this, Nico adjusts to the outside life while trying to find the guy who killed Allie. Gabe has had baggage since the loss of his Terry but a friendship with Nico begins. A friends to lovers in a slow romance, both characters had coincidences where they both lost someone theyd loved. While this was a great story I felt the characters feelings were not included but in telling dialogue from their friends from observations. Topics of death of a parent for a 4 year old, attempted rape, panic attacks, voilent attacks and drama. A good story with both povs which they find their HEA ending amongst all the happenings and actions.
I loved this book and couldn’t put it down! It’s the beginning of the Angel Security series. When I started I didn’t realize that it was connected to the author’s Down The Shore series. It didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book, but I definitely want to go back and read about the couples that spill over into this series.
Nico has just been released from prison and wants to turn his life around. He is determined to be there for his four year old son Cody, whose mother was killed by her abusive ex. Gabe is a former Navy Seal who now works for Angel Security. Gabe and Nico are drawn to each other and quickly become friends and then more. They are so good together. Gabe is a caretaker and so supportive of Nico as he gains confidence and deals with the trauma he experienced in prison. While there is a little drama, I loved that it wasn’t between Gabe and Nico. I also loved the focus on found family. I’m very much looking forward to following this group and seeing where love strikes next. I received a copy of this book from GRR and this is my honest opinion.
This was my first book written by this author, and I didn’t regret choosing to read it. I loved it! Nico and Gabe are two broken men, two fallen angels, dealing with their scars, trying to rise from the ashes of their past, and from all the bad things life has thrown in their direction. Their love is not at first sight, but a slow burn relationship that starts as a friendship, and then becomes something deeper. The author describes very well all the emotions their characters feel. She makes the reader feel what they feel, creating an inside-out connection through the words. I felt Nico’s pain, he went through a trauma so big that the first night out of prison he couldn’t even realise he was free, and safe. I’m glad that he met Gabe, and that they managed to be happy together. I literally adored Cody, Nico’s son, especially after what happened the first night his father came back home. And I laughed a lot about the alligator scene, that was so funny! So, I’m really looking forward to reading more about this author.
Outstanding! Nico spent 4 years in prison for something he didn't do. While incarcerated, Allison, his baby momma was murdered in a hit and run and his son is left in the care of his Uncle Zach. Prison was not good to him and left scars internal and external. Gabe is a Navy SEAL with heavy secrets. He's protective and feels responsible for those who can't defend themselves. When Nico is released he encounters challenges that may affect his plans for the rest of his life. Absolutely delicious adventurous story about the team of men and found family. Great group of men and woma and excellent adventure. Zack and Nico have lived complicated lives and it is a joy reading about them trying to uncomplicate them. Very nice cover art. Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Such a wonderful read! Gabe and Nico are such fantastic characters! They have both been through so much and are just trying to move on with their lives. They meet through friends and Gabe gets protective very quickly and tries to help Nico as much as possible. Their friendship grows into a beautiful relationship. It warms my heart to see Nico open up and trust Gabe with everything including his adorable son Cody! I absolutely love this found family! They are all so tight and always there for each other to help in any way! This author writes such beautiful characters and stories! Absolutely loved how the situation with Cody turned out to make it work for everyone! A beautiful story that I very highly recommend! This is my honest opinion of this complimentary copy of this book
I liked this book quite a bit. I definitely got more out of it having already read the Down the Shore series, and knowing the stories of many of the characters.
My complaint, and the reason why I took off a star, is because for more than half the book both characters talked about how they couldn’t imagine being in a relationship. They had strong reasons for it. And then, they both decided after one kiss to be together. No angst, no real/focused addressing of the reasons they didn’t want to be in a relationship before. I very much enjoy low angst, but it was a bit jarring for me.
That said, I was invested in the characters and in the storyline. I’ll definitely pick up the next in the series.
This is a wonderful expansion of the 'Down the Shore' series. Evie methodically builds characters with depth and lays out a plot that is filled with trauma, crimes, treachery and close friendships.
She has written memorable moments with a small child, Cody, who is a perfect mixture of loveable, filled with passionate displays of emotions and enraptured with Disney movies.
Nico, one of our MC's, is learning about life after 4 years in prison for a crime he was innocent of, rebuilding a career and being the best father he can be to Cody. When he moves in with Gabe, a security specialist, he also gains skills, a job and someone who provides emotional support. Romance follows.
I thougt Evie did a great job with the therapist and the rescue mission.
Both Nico and Gabe are men who are in the process of trying to get their lives back on track. Nico is dealing with time in prison for a crime that he did not commit, time lost with his son and the loss of his son's mother to a violent death. Each is in need of a friend and that is where things started for them. They were hesitant to start anything with one another until they finally gave in to the love that they found with one another. Together they begin to build not only a strong connection to one another but an extension of the family that is there for Nico's son. Gabe is fiercely protective for them both. Something good came to them as they came together that helped both of them heal. I received an ARC from GRR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I loved this book. It was a sweet slow burn romance. I loved both Gabe and Nico. They were really cute together. Nico has a lot going against him, having been wrongly accused of murder and spending time in jail, trying to hold a security job while on parole where hurting someone could send him back, and trying to do all he can to get custody of his son. Gabe was on his side and I liked that he taught him self defense techniques so he could better do his job without risking getting hurt or hurting anyone; liked how patient he was with him. I liked their way their relationship deepened. Little Cody was so precious. I loved the supporting characters, and you get a real sense of found family. 4 stars
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I really enjoyed this story. Nico just got out of prison after serving time for something he didn’t do and Gabe learning to love again after losing it.
These two were well matched they helped one another heal and move forward.
This story was well written and had me all up in my feelings I loved the relationship between these two, they both had issues they were working on and the support they found in one another was beautiful. Their little family within the angel security team was close not and I can’t wait to read more from these characters.
Thank you for the book, here is my honest opinion: Lovely couple, these two have really been through it! Nico lost four year to prison for a crime he didn’t commit and Gabe lost his career in the navy and his family. This is slow moving, as Nico needs time to heal it’s and it’s definitely a slow burn. Slow burn is my favorite but this was done so well. I think because I was so invested in their friendship which was pretty lovely to see develop. I also loved getting to see Nico take his like back step by step, to build a new one for himself and his son. Gabe and Nico really packed a punch, these two and their slow moving relationship were crazy romantic. Loved it!
I liked this book. I like books about people getting out of prison. I even enjoyed this book
But. There was a lot of disconnect. The characters weren’t well written and their connection even worse. A lot of things glossed over. At times the writing style jumped and skipped all over the place.
And seriously. How much crying and “wiping his eyes” can one man do. That was so overdone.
I was a little frustrated. A great story but unable to meet its goal.
Edited to add: I just looked at the reviews after posting my review and I realised a lot of readers also had trouble with the connection. Really surprised me. Usually I’m just odd with what I like.
What a wonderful heartwarming read. I was not familiar with this author, but the story she tells of Nico and Gabe had me from page one and I will seek out and read other things she has written. Both men have backstories that broke my heart, especially Nico's, but they discover one another and develop their own family. The book has perfect blend of romance and adventure, with an adorable kid. I finished this and so hope there is a book two as this couple has more to share. I did receive an ARC and leave this honest review.
This book has it all. The characters are well-written and have depth. There is a little drama and a little danger. There are great friends and found family, humor, comeuppance, justification, romance and so much more. It is always an added bonus for me when a story includes kids. Cody is adorable and the author wonderfully depicts this hurting child who is adjusting.
Nico and Gabe fit each other perfectly. I can’t wait to learn more about the other security guys and perhaps a couple of the genuine family members that appeared in this story.
Nico just got out of prison after being unfairly sent there for four years and wants to be the best Dad he can be but doesn't want his son's mother's death to be unavenged. He tries to work with Gabe, an ex Navy Seal's group Angel Security, to find her killer. In this slow burn book with lots of angst, Nico and Gabe take it slowly but know they should be together. Nico's son is a cutie and is an integral part of the book. I received a copy of this book through BookSprout and this is my voluntary opinion.
Interestingly these two had pasts that were similar but for different reasons. Both have regrets but a lot of hope. Nico missed out on so much for being wrongly accused and now as a single Dad he wants to make things right for his son. Gabe was an ex-seal who admittedly made mistakes and now wants to make things right again. It made me happy to see them bond and both become happier more balanced men together. I loved that they handled things together!
