When a ship of youthful refugees maroons on a strange and dangerous new planet, Xander had no choice but to take charge of his shapeshifting clan, the Bete, to protect the strange foreign healer, K'Ti, from humans as well as his own suspicious clan. Among humans, shapeshifting and magic were frequently equated with evil. The lives of the Bete and K'Ti would readily be forfeit if certain fanatical factions discovered their gifts.

After Xander convinced the captain to let them be the first to set up camp outside, the healer's extensive magical skills quickly became key to survival. When K'Ti discovered the Bete's shapeshifting abilities, Xander defied his clan to let her live.

To defend themselves, and the humans, from the vicious predators like the man-sized Klixit, of the new planet, the Bete will need every skill, shred of knowledge and capability they possess. Xander will have to weigh the needs of his clan with his trust of humans, the risk from the dangers all around them, and those that lie within his fellow refugees.

Some language and violence.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Beast Within is a gripping sci-fi, fantasy novel that follows a group of young shape-shifters working together to survive on an unknown planet.

Xander, Laren, and Rem are on a ship with other bete - their tribe and many humans after their planet has been attacked. The ship crashes, landing them on an unknown planet with no way to leave. After rescuing a young woman who possesses magic, K'ti, from a group of humans, Xander convinces the captain to let their tribe venture outside and set up a camp. Once the get outside, The bete soon realize that K'ti's powers are beyond what they expected. The group works fast to set up a camp and start gathering food and supplies. While gathering plants, K'ti witnesses Xander's true form - the dragon and Laren's - a fanged panther. The bete had agreed that she must die if she found out their secret, but Xander cannot bring himself to do it. Xander and K'ti have a true connection and he knows in his heart that she would never betray his tribe. He succeeds in convincing his tribe of this and K'ti soon becomes a part of their family.

I loved the characters in this book. The sense of family and community within their tribe was inspiring. K'ti brought so much happiness and organization into the tribe. I was hoping that her and Xander would get closer, and I got my wish!

"You are like the river. like a world of oceans filled with pure water, filled with life and wonder, mystery and magic, as necessary as breathing. I could walk away, turn away, but I find myself coming back, time and again, to drink. I never find an end to my thirst, unable to escape my need. I am lost in the glory of light in your eyes."

awww :)

The captain ends up coming out of the ship with a new group to join the bete. Soon after arriving, an unexpected conflict arises that puts everyone in danger. This new twist changes everyone's plans in order to resolve the immediate threat.

Overall, I loved this story and can't wait to read the next instalment. The author did a good job writing intertwining stories and keeping the reader interested. If you like sci-fi, fantasy, and a tad bit of romance, this one is definitely for you!

Heart-stopping action guarantees a wild ride in Stephanie Barr’s Sci-Fi fantasy adventure, “Beast Within (The Bete Book 1). Captivating and action-packed from the very first paragraph, “Beast Within” guides the reader through a seat-of-your-pants journey that will have them flipping page after page just to find out what happens next… and next.. and next.

Barr’s writing is pointed and direct, with a clear and driven plot line that moves her characters quickly from one strange circumstance to the next. Her characters have a broad range of talents and skills, and their backgrounds seem custom built by the author to allow Fate to take them through the best and worst of times during their epic struggle to survive an extremely hostile environment. Barr uses just the right balance of tension and humor to offset Xander, Rem, and Laren’s confrontations against Bete prejudice and general cultural bias in a world where they and the humans they arrived with have no choice but to pull together in order to meet the challenges of a strange new world. The result is a brilliant formulation of an altered society where strength of character, resilience, and wit can best their new environment.

“Beast Within” is a superlative read with its underlying messages of hope, tolerance, and courage in spite of unimaginable odds. Sci-fi and Fantasy fans—you certainly don’t want to miss this one!

A Ship load of children traveling to a lunar base suddenly find themselves in a foreign part of the galaxy. As a matter of survival, they are forced to land on an untamed and unknown planet. Low on resources, morale and order, the captain allows a group of strangely skilled youths to brave the world outside on their own.

This group of children are from a little known tribe of form altering beings called the Bete. Humans on their world believe them to be something to fear and loathe. Yet, on this strange new world, the Bete may be the humans only chance of survival.

The central theme of this story to me is a classic one. Don't judge others based in their appearance. Now I said classic, not old. This theme never gets old. In fact, it may be more relevant now than ever before.

I loved the characters in this story. The author is very adept at creating original and authentic literary personas. The reader can't help but connect and empathize with them.

The plotline flows, with no holes or off-topic scenes. I liked how the author unfolds the story as the plot progresses and not right away. This leaves the reader to ponder what is going on until it is revealed. It was a fast paced story and I looked forward to reading it daily.

This book could use some preliminary world-building. We’re dumped directly into the action of a space war without having any idea of the planet or the culture from which the ship is fleeing. All we know is that it’s not Earth, since we are informed in the first paragraph that the planet has three tiny moons and a large one. I think the author may have been caught in the “show, don’t tell” so-called rule of writing, but personally I would have gotten interested quicker if I had known more about the world from which these characters are fleeing. And we really don’t get a coherent explanation of why the character of Xander is as it is until about 70% through the book.
That planet apparently has at least three races of intelligent lifeforms – human, shapeshifters, and another race of which K’ti is a member but which is not described in much detail. I don’t recall if it was even given a name. The book is a hybrid of fantasy and science fiction; the planet is technologically developed, but two of these races apparently exercise magic powers.
Humans persecute the shapeshifters, who are telepathic and whose abilities give them great power. Some of their characteristics are precipitated by eating “lichee,” which I presume the author must have derived from Earth’s “lychee,” which has been known to cause “hypoglycemic encephalopathy” in humans (see Wikipedia under “lychee”). And humans are also telepathic to a degree, primarily with the shipcats, another feature that assures us we’re not in Kansas any longer. These cats are intelligent; besides being telepathic, they have poisonous fangs. They ally themselves at birth with a humanoid individual with whom they communicate, dispensing serious advice on proper conduct. Actually, the shipcats are my favorite part of the book.
Once the ship lands on a distant alien planet, the description begins to blossom. The author likes to describe the environment in terms of jewel colors: “Above, the sky was violet-blue, but in nearly every other direction thrived and gleamed in shades of emerald and jade, with bushes, trees and vines sporting vibrant flowers or brilliantly-colored fruits, more jewels in ruby, garnet, sapphire, and topaz.” I really enjoyed the vividness of some of this description.
The characterization of the shapeshifters, who are the main characters, is quite good. The villains of the piece are pretty much clichés. K’ti, with her powers of healing, remains a bit of a mystery and I have a feeling that in the second volume of this series we’ll learn more about her.
Naturally, the alien planet has its dangers, including a species of giant, rudimentarily intelligent insects. And then right at the end of the book we’re introduced to other denizens of the planet in what constitutes a cliff-hanger. It’s this cliff-hanger end that will probably propel me toward reading the second volume!

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Although I was a bit lost at the start of the book, I did find this a really entertaining book to read and I thought that, although the idea of shapeshifting isn't a terribly unique one, I thought it was handled in a good way.

I felt myself drawn into the world in this book quite easily, even if it did take me a while to get to know the characters and the situation they were in. It would have been good to see more of the world that they left and the reasons why, though I did get some glimpses of the society they had left and what their lives had been like before.

I did like a lot of the characters in this book. I was particularly intrigued by the relationship between Xander and Laren. I've always liked brother-type relationships and although the two of them were at each others' throats more often than not, I felt I could see there was true affection between them. And as I learned more about both of their pasts, I became more and more intrigued by them and was able to empathise with them both really easily.

I found it a bit more difficult to empathise with K'Ti. Although she came across as a fairly likable, innocent character, I didn't find the romance as believable as it could have been. There were some passages of time that were glossed over that I felt could have been expanded upon. At the same time, I did feel that K'Ti was a well-rounded character and I found her skills to be quite interesting. I didn't really understand much about her past, but it was good to see how quickly and willingly she accepted the Bete and found a place among them.

I did like Rem as a character and I would have liked to see more of him through the book and about his past. It was nice to see his interactions with Xander and the others.

I was interested in the characters who were shown, but I did feel that there were many who weren't explored. I was a bit confused by some of the relationships shown and it would have been good to see more of some of the more minor characters.

I would probably read the next book in this series at some point in the future. It would be good to see what happens to the characters and how they deal with the events at the end of this book.

3.5 magical little stars

*I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

The world building in this book was amazing. The story is set on an entirely different planet and it was created really magically. Some mysteries to the place and I’m hoping for a sequel to find out more. The plotline was good; there was a lot of action throughout as well as some other interesting excursions.

I loved the characters in the book, Xander, Laren and Rem were all really great and sweet; despite having some rather ass qualities.
There was a real sense of community to this book not only caused by the closeness of the Bete but also the multiple POV’s which I loved.
Speaking of closeness there was some awesome romance going on. I don’t want to spoil anything so I will simply say I ship, Laren and Darma, Rem and Sinda El, and Xander and K’ti...

That said I can’t give this book 5 stars...
I did not like the way the story started and honestly it really put me off reading the rest if it was going to be just as uninformative – which it wasn’t. There wasn’t much of an introduction to the book, the ship crashes almost immediately and we are introduced to K’ti and the Bete. I have nothing against fast starting stories but it took ages to find out what the Bete were and make sense of the things they were talking about; K’ti’s story came almost half way through the book although there were snippets about her before we got a clear explanation.

I would’ve liked more background on the situation; a ship full of kids crashes on a distant planet and they are stranded there, yeah, why? There was a brief mention of war, a little more to go on would’ve been really nice. I found some of the POV changes at the start a little unclear but that cleared out pretty quickly.

Fantasy and Sci-Fi Like it Used to Be

I just finished "Beast Within" by Stephanie Barr. Gawd I want to put a “The” in front of that title, but it’s absolutely right that I can’t.

What a rollicking, rock-along tale. I know it's for teens, but MAN did I have fun reading it. Had a little trouble wading into it, getting a sense of what the author was doing, even with the clue in the title. Oh, but once it got going I was fifteen again and buried in a serialized novel in Fantasy & Science Fiction. By Chapter III I was strapped in for the ride. This story had everything... were-creatures, as a biologist I loved the way the author dealt with the mass change ("Dunno... we just do. Must be an explanation, but we don't have it. Weren't we talking survival here?"), there were multiple species, there was love, there was pain, fights to the death, a not-quite-sex scene that would give high school librarians the gibberin’ fits, men becoming leaders and leaders becoming men... and then suddenly the snake-swift, hammer-hard insertion of the human ability to allow fear of difference to become bigotry and hate. Perfect allegory! As far as I'm concerned, Stephanie Barr is the true reincarnation of Andre Norton. Real hardcore Sci-Fi ADVENTURES... written for guy geeks by a woman.

Great stuff!

Beast Within by Stephanie Barr is a science fiction/fantasy mashup that has great potential as a series. I love this particular genre mashup and wish there were more of them available out there. I also love shapeshifting books.

The three main characters: Laren, Rem and Xander, were well flushed out and had good chemistry as a group. I really enjoyed the shape-shifting aspect of their powers and how they were the cohesive force behind the Bete, battling both the hatred of the regular humans and their own arrogant Council. I enjoyed their parts very much. K'Ti, the strange outsider woman whose history was shrouded in mystery, was okay but soon seemed a bit too conveniently overpowered for my taste. Along those lines, I wish I had a clearer understanding of their origin planet earlier in the book. I know it wasn't supposed to be Earth but with the clear racism and similarities to other minority groups, a sprinkling information throughout the text might have been helpful in preventing me from sorting this story into some strange space-faring yet backward version of our culture.

Even so, it was well written with a solid plot. A good read for all those who like Sci-Fi/Fan mashups!

My sincere thanks to the author for providing me with a complimentary e-book copy in exchange for my honest review.

Beast Within is a young adult dystopian, scifi, fantasy story with shapeshifters, aliens and healers. There's action, twists and even a little romance.

Zander and his Bete group along with a few hundred humans are sent away on a ship when their planet is being attacked. When their ship is hit, they are forced to land on an unknown planet with no way to leave. After helping many injured kids and teachers and meeting K'Ti, the healer, Zander convinces the captain to let his group along with K'Ti leave the ship and establish a camp. Since the shapeshifting and magic of the Bete is considered evil by many of the humans, Zander and his group must hide their abilities from the rest.

They must explore their new environment and setup a camp where they can be safe from all of the predators that live on this new planet. Looking forward to the rest of their exciting story in the next book!

Fantastic Journey into Soace...and Beyond

This is a great story about prejudice, fear, and the will to survive. after a cataclysm rocks their home planet, refugees on a ship find themselves stranded on a whole new world. The novel follows the Bete, erase of magical people, and humans who are at first unaware that the Bete exist.
If you enjoy tales about shifters, tales about how people interact, tales about how prejudice can cause tragedy, and bravery can change the hearts of the most fearful people, then you will enjoy this book.

Entertaining Science Fantasy

Well written and engaging, the story builds on the character interaction between a group of young passengers with secrets to hide from the main group of crash landed spacefaring survivors.
