I Hate Fairyland Vol. 8 – Happy End Game (TPB) (2025) : The end of all MUFFIN FLUFFERS! Gert saved Fairyland from a monster infestation and is being celebrated by one and all. Okay, well… maybe not all. Deep below the Inferno, in the bowels of Hell, an old rival is gathering an army of the dead to put an end to our green-haired heroine… and she might need to assemble some familiar faces to avenge her (get it?).

Dude what happened? Did they just completely run out of any ideas? While it’s funny to make a Disney reference of claiming all fairy tales, I don’t understand why all the sudden now we’re just grasping at every single straw to try and get this thing over with. It’s pretty sad, because I thought it was so inventive and fun in the beginning. But the cheap gags from the last one, just continue on here with recycling old characters and relying on well known characters. Also wasn’t there that whole thing about Cloudia coming back? They had to have really rushed these last few issues out.
When I first heard the name Skottie Young, it was in reference to his adaptation of The Wizard of Oz series for Marvel. I admired the covers from afar, but never picked it up....
And then Mr Young started I Hate Fairyland, his own IP where he could be as referential and irreverant to the source material of all sorts of fairy tale stories (especially those in the public domain) and be a psychotic chaos demon in his own sandbox. I was very happy to see his tribute to that original dipping of the toes into Oz in this story arc:
I must emphasize that Happy End Game is not the end of this run (despite the title). Young has said this in multiple venues that I Hate Fairyland will continue. If I were to rate as an actual series finale, my rating would be lower, because it did not feel 'big' enough plot-wise, nor as narratively satisfying.
The premise: ALL of the Fairyland denizens that Gert has sent to hell have come together under the Nega-Gert (a.k.a. Happy, one of the other children sent on a quest to Fairyland). Gert rallies the denizens of Fairyland, but it is not enough as she has whittled down their population severly over the past 40 issues, so now she has to breach other IP universes (especially the ones that are recently in the public domain) to get this Armageddon going!
While this volumne is still a fun read, I felt there was too much of a rush for this to be in 5 chapters.
3.5🌟 After reading volume 7 in 2024 I really didn’t think I’d revisit Fairyland. But, after purchasing the whole fluffing tale for a friend I figured I’d give it a try as it was once such a phenomenal story.
I enjoyed this one a bit more than 7 but do believe the story should probably end already. It feels that the author is grasping at straws to keep it going.
I genuinely love everything up toll volume 7 and it lives rent free in my mind. The artwork is still absolutely stellar, but it’s just not as good any more.
Gert has to deal with all of her enemies from the past. Some good resolutions. The fairy tale girls come to help. An ending that is nicely open. I really enjoyed this series.
This series is so delightfully colorful and ridiculously gory. I'll always love it. It does kind of feel like we keep doing the same thing over and over again but... it's such a fun ride.
