Mucha's name has become almost synonymous with Art Nouveau, although he long outlived it and had other artistic interests. This biography by his son covers Mucha's early years, his activities in Paris and America, his artistic endeavors in the new Czechoslovakian State after WWI, and his unhappy death under the shadow of the Gestapo. With 299 reproductions of Mucha's work, in color or black-and-white, and many photographs. Indexed. Dust jacket lightly chipped with small tears. Corner bumped. 300 pages. cloth, dust jacket.. oblong small 4to..
Really lovely book, beautifully written with gorgeous attention to detail about the exciting era of Art Nouveau in Europe.
I would not recommend this book to the casual reader unless they love the history of art: so many complex references are name dropped.
Jiri Mucha's writing is a bit irregular in places often jumping chronologically. Mucha's life is highlighted and described in rich detail but not much of a deep analysis is given about his work. His later years are not even mentioned and the book merely ends when Art Nouveau ends in popularity and WWI begins.
