Sometimes, the toughest battles are the ones you fight alone.
Alice Beaumont was unstoppable - a formidable boxer on the fast track to Olympic glory. But when a life-changing diagnosis of MS tore it all away, she lost more than her dreams. Now, living out of her car and haunted by regret, Alice is a shadow of the fighter she once was.
Then she meets Kat.
Reckless, raw, and bursting with potential, the young fighter reminds Alice of everything she used to be. But Kat’s self-destructive streak threatens to burn her career - and her future - to the ground.
Drawn back into the gym she once called home, Alice sees a chance to reclaim her purpose by mentoring Kat. But stepping back into the ring doesn’t just test their strength; it forces them to face their demons.
As their lives collide, both women must will they rise together - or fall alone?
Perfect for fans of Taylor Jenkins Reid's Carrie Soto Is Back and Fredrik Backman's Beartown, Rings of Redemption is a gripping tale of resilience, unlikely bonds, and the relentless fight for second chances.
J.C. Davies is an author and photographer based in the picturesque Derbyshire Dales. When he’s not crafting stories, he’s out braving the elements with Oscar, his loyal Goldendoodle, or negotiating peace treaties with Pumpkin, his temperamental cat. He loves writing strong, independent female characters – likely because he lives with one.
Okay, this was a very emotional, inspiring and captivating book. This story is about getting out of the drenches, out of the hopelessness, out of the depression, and how to continue living with depression and not letting it weigh you down. It’s about found family, enemies to best friends (never read a book like this), and supporting each other. I really enjoyed J.C. Davies writing. I loved the way he gripped you in this book, how he wrote these characters. I love how the side characters had your heart as well. I cried a couple of times throughout the book. —— “…there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes it’s just difficult to see it in the darkness.” ——
We follow a girl named Alice who got diagnosed with MS right before her Olympic Games and that completely derailed her life. I can’t relate to Alice regarding her body betraying her in her peak in life but I can resonate with the anger, spite, shame that she experiences. She turned to alcohol in the beginning of the book, living in her car, homeless just trying to suppress her feelings, her dark thoughts and just her confrontation of her life.
We then have Kat, oh she’s a little street rebel who holds the biggest chip on her shoulder. She is angry, mean and living in fight or flight mode all the time. (Her cortisol levels are probably through the roof…XD)
Patrick has my heart!!! OMG!!!! He is such a good book boyfriend! He was going through his own struggles and was always there, always there in the background not letting go of hope, always a silent supporter even if Alice was not being a good friend. When he arrives at the restaurant I was balling! I was balling so hard because despite everything he came. He came and was there.
Pete and Tommy, opposites attract. Hahaha! Them being pillars in these girls life despite going through so much, ugh, I love them.
Here are some of my quotes I highlighted:
“She downed the wine in two gulps and ordered another, reflecting on how easy it is to make promises to yourself in the morning that are impossible to keep once the sun goes down.” ——— “ The motivation to do things for other people fades, no matter how much you care about them. But the fire that comes from within - that’s what lasts. You can’t lean on anyone else to carry you through this. You have to want it, deep down.’ She jabbed her finger into her chest for emphasis. ‘So, do you? Do you really want this, or are you just trying to make other people proud?”
...“And whether I do this for you, for Pete, or for myself?’ Kat continued, her voice trembling slightly but each word sharp and deliberate. ‘That’s none of your damn business.” ——— “No one expects to have their dreams taken away in their twenties, but she’d adjusted and adapted. It wasn’t just about moving on; it was about transforming the loss into something new, something meaningful.” ——— I got an ARC Copy of this book and this is my honest rating of the book. :)
I throughly enjoyed this book! Following along their journey and the support they had for each other was outstanding. I laughed, cried and yelled at this book so much. I was frustrated and happy all in one sitting. I couldn’t stop reading. I needed to know what was next. It did have its slower moments but it was a nice break. This story about the love of the family you chose, and finding your path is truly inspiring and amazing.! Never give up, and honestly felt like a best friend who always had your back, even when you didn’t.
Thank you for sending me an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own !
Well this was an emotional yet captivating read as you’re thrown in the characters personal journeys.
We get to follow Alice as she navigates life as it’s turned upside down. I got to laugh, cry and feel the frustration as she finds her path and at the end of the book I couldn’t help feeling a pang of pride.
Kat is the real underdog that I certainly wanted to strangle from time to time, but with a chosen family and a few believers you can accomplish anything you set your mind to! I truly wished I had my own Pete & Tommy in my life, you could feel their love for each other as well as the girls through the pages, and Patrick deserves a medal for sticking around.
This is the perfect book to cozy up in the couch with and it helped me out of my reading slump. It’s a book about finding your place when life throws you a curve ball, about the love for the family that you choose, that deep friendship and most importantly - the love that comes from the people around you, that refuses to let you go even when you beg them to.
I LOVED reading this book, I wasn't sure what to expect and it's definitely on the tamer side of my reads but I could totally imagine bumping in to these characters at a local pub!
It kept me hooked all the way through, made me laugh and I also shed a tear!
Alice is a boxer who was living her dream and made it in to the Olympic Team when disaster struck and her life took on a different path.
This book takes you on Alice's journey as she battles health problems and becomes the mentor and best friend we all need in our lives.
A truly excellent read and I'd definitely add this to your TBR 🤍
I wasn't sure what to expect and it's definitely not one of the genres I usually read. He talks about very sensitive topics such as autoimmune disease, domestic violence, the problems that a young person can encounter who does not have the support of his family, etc. I can honestly say that at some points in the book I cried. A LOT!!!! it is a very good book and very well written. the author's way of writing makes you one with the story. I definitely recommend it❤️❤️
