Set in the blazing future of Voice of the Whirlwind, “Wolf Time” continues the story of the mercenary Reese, who finds herself in the employ of a shadowy corporation intent on killing its own rogue employees. Not only is Reese assigned the impossible task of attacking an asteroid outpost whose defenders know perfectly well she’s coming, but she discovers that her greatest danger may come from her own side . . .
Walter Jon Williams has published twenty novels and short fiction collections. Most are science fiction or fantasy -Hardwired, Voice of the Whirlwind, Aristoi, Metropolitan, City on Fire to name just a few - a few are historical adventures, and the most recent, The Rift, is a disaster novel in which "I just basically pound a part of the planet down to bedrock." And that's just the opening chapters. Walter holds a fourth-degree black belt in Kenpo Karate, and also enjoys sailing and scuba diving. He lives in New Mexico with his wife, Kathy Hedges.
This story sort of picks up where Voice of Whirlwind left off. Some pharmaceutical intrigue, cyberpunk style, of Reese doing what she does as mercenary. It's well written, carries the reader thru to the end. Read it, and expect betrayals. It's good.
This is a short standalone story set post events in the Voice of the Whirlwind novel.
Hiding after the mentioned events, Reese is trying to relax in Central Asia, using a cover name and having changed her physical looks. Veteran of corporate wars and conflicts with the mysterious Powers (aliens, main feature of the mentioned novel) Reese is now a mercenary, ready to dig in into any conflict available to earn money, as far as possible from Earth corporations (if possible).
And finally offer comes in - cleanup of the scientific installation on the asteroid on behalf of the corporation so it can save its face. Of course, it does not work the way Reese expects, but now maybe she can help someone, and this act might even bear results as expected (although Reese would remain cynical about this).
Ending is very realistic (I mean, life is not Don Quixote's charge - right?) while story is pretty standard black-ops cyberpunk story.
Highly recommended to fans of cyberpunk and shady word of corporate enforcers and mercenaries.
