About the author

David Malcolm Potts was a British human reproductive scientist and professor of public health at the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley.
He was the first holder of the Fred H. Bixby-endowed chair in Population and Family Planning and founding director of the Bixby Center for Population, Health, and Sustainability at the School of Public Health.

يبدأ سفر التكوين، أول أسفار الكتاب المقدس، بسرد قصة خلق الأرض، يتبعه خلق حواء من آدم في جنة عدن.

وعلى الرغم من أن معظمنا يعرف رواية أن حواء خُلِقت من ضلع آدم، إلا أن هذه الفكرة ظهرت كنتيجة لسوء ترجمة النص العبري القديم، حيث الكلمة التي استُخدمت لـ "الضلع" كانت "زيلا – zela".

لكن الترجمة الأدق لكلمة zela هي "جانب"، كما في "جانب الجبل"، وليس "ضلعًا" بالمعنى التشريحي.

وبناءً عليه، من المرجّح أن النية الأصلية في العهد القديم كانت وصف آدم على أنه مخلوق مزدوج الجنس (gynandromorph) — أي ذكر من أحد جانبي جسده وأنثى من الجانب الآخر.

ثم جاء الإله وفصل الاثنين إلى كائنين مستقلين. وبما أن كل ذكر كان له أنثى تقابله، فقد شكّل هذا أساس إيمان الكنيسة بالزواج الأحادي (رجل واحد لامرأة واحدة).

حتى مراسم الزواج المسيحية كانت تُرى كرمز لإعادة توحيد غير قابلة للانفصام بين هذين النصفين، ومن هنا جاءت العبارة في طقس الزواج:
"الذين جمعهم الإله، لا يفرقهم إنسان."
