“I've seen some pretty strange things in my life, and more of them make me think magic is possible than not.”
Brownies and Broomsticks was just what I was looking for - finally a paranormal themed cozy mystery that isn't all fault fluff and unrealistic rigidity.
The main character has returned to a small town to escape her current life and start a anew in a bakery business with her aunt and uncle. Once there she finds out that she is in a long line of "hedgewitchery" and that the local book club is actually a type of coven of unique witches.
Besides being charmed by the series detailed deserts (and the generous recipes at the back), it's a interesting with the magic. The book keeps it simple since she's an amateur trying the magic on for size, but I love how the aunt puts in herbs and various spells into the baked goods in terms of what a customer needs or wants.
The club is comprised of witches from different backgrounds, some more on the light side than others, which makes it interesting and not too generic. Being a cozy, it's definitely a feel good story that doesn't break too many rules, but it's a cut above most of the paranormal themed I've read.
Not too sugar sweet and a nice blend of characters. Unfortunately there's a small love triangle brewing - I'm definitely team Steve! Have to love the dog too.

This is a light cozy mystery that is clean and wholesome. You can breeze through it without a lot of concentration.

Each installment is able to stand on its own. However, you will be introduced to the characters and experience the development of the story much more clearly if you read the entire series in order.

I must agree with other reviewers about the nickname one of the characters has for the heroine, which is definitely an annoying nuisance. Thankfully, her aunt, along with the rest of her book club is helpful in many ways.
Last thought, I don't appreciate profanity in any shape or form. It is totally unnecessary!

Audiobook-narration excellent
Katie Lightfoot is a witch but even better than, she's a baker. New to her witch side she explores the possibilities while she bakes delights in her aunts new bakery. Everything was going well till an old mean woman came in and threatened the bakery, family and anything else she could think of while stealing money owed to the bakery. The old bat wasn't done there no she went and got her neck broken, complicating matters and leaving some serious accusations on her uncle's shoulders. Katie who just can't stop snooping hunts to true killer using her two hunky new male friends, her aunts coven/book club and her new magical techniques.
I really liked this light southern cozy mystery. The characters were fun, interesting and complimented each other well. The nasties were truly nasty, delightfully so. Katie Lightfoot makes scones that had my mouth watering luckily she included her recipe. Yes, I made them, and enjoyed them with some rosemary tea. Great recipe, great reading snack. Double the pleasure, double the fun. I ordered the second book, and I see Biscotti in the title. I'll be baking up some of those very soon.

It was enjoyable enough.
I liked the idea of the magical bakery and I could almost smell the goodies Katie baked! The mystery was well planned and nice paced through the book. The characters were interesting and well presented in the story.
BUT...
My main reason for not giving it more than 3* is that I didn't feel the magic. I liked the concept the author adopted but I just didn't get that much excited and compelled by the magic-doing. Truthfully, there were not many scenes with characters practicing magic, but even those were somewhat lacking.
I won't get my hopes down though, since our Katie only just discovered her talents in this book. I will continue with the series with fingers crossed.

Mood/Seasonal Reading: warm April
I have read a number of cozy’s this year in an effort to escape a rough health year for me. All have been less than what I wanted them to be sadly. Until this book.
It had everything I was craving. A bit of magic, a bit of baking, a bit of romance (and a love triangle even better), some animals, and a good mystery. Overall, I was very happy with it!
The only reason I gave it 4 instead of a full 5 was I did find it a tad difficult to follow along with the mystery at times. However, I enjoyed it so much I’ve already picked up the sequel to read sometime soon.

This was a good start to what looks like a fun paranormal cozy mystery series...
I truly think if I had to pick a paranormal being to be I would definitely pick a witch.... this book made me feel even more strongly about this, Katie was just so likable... i'd love to spend time hanging out with her and the bookclub, Not to mention all those yummy baked goods.... The mystery in this book was good, it definitely kept me guessing until the very end... at first I wasn't thrilled that there might be a possible love triangle, but then I thought to myself I lived through 23 books of Stephanie Plum without her making any kind of choice, why not? Definitely will be continuing with the series...

Katie Lightfoot left her life in Akron, Ohio and choose to be with her aunt and uncle in Savannah, Georgia. After her engagement called off , she prefer to get away and when she had a chance to help her aunt Lucy in her bakery, she jumps right on. She was starting to enjoy her life in Savannah while running the Honeybee Bakery when bad things happens.
It is all started with an agreement with Mavis Templeton, a bitter old lady who wants to hold a business meeting in Honeybee Bakery in a short notice. The deal gone bad when Mavis decide to pay her less than they agreed the first time. Her uncle, Ben, defends Katie and get into a bad argument that led to Mavis threaten to close the Honeybee Bakery. Just a few minutes after she left the bakery, she was found dead in her car with a broken neck. Due to their argument later, uncle Ben become a suspect and Lucy try her best to prove that her uncle is innocent. Little did she know, thats not all the problem she have to deal with. She discoveres her family secret that shake her world while dealing with two men who fights for her affection.
I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS SERIES !! It was a fast paced , fun reading for me. This is exactly how a cozy mystery should be. The book focused on the main character for a few chapter, and it makes me relate to her story. One thing i love, this book didnt throw a lot of characters in the first few chapters to make a point that a lot of people have motives to be the murderer. Instead , all the characters are slowly introduced right after the murder happens. I will definitely read another books in this series and from the author.

What kind of chef "doesn't like knives"? Not the greatest character flaw.

As my friend Suranjana knows only too well...cozy mysteries are not really my go-to genre. But her fondness for them coupled with my love for food (even when present in book titles or book covers) made me take the plunge.
Katie Lightfoot is a pastry chef who shifts to Savannah when her elderly aunt and uncle decide to open a bakery and offers her the position of the chef. However things go awry when right before the grand opening of their cute little bakery a woman gets murdered just after leaving the bakery. All suspicion falls on Katie's uncle and in order to put things right, Katie sets out to solve the mystery and free her uncle from blame.
The mystery is a good one..it actually keeps you guessing. But although Katie does actually figure out the murderer at the end, I personally didn't think she has the makings of a good detective. I'd say it's all good luck coupled with witchery.
There's a lot of magic use and witchcraft in this book which really isn't much of a spoiler since it's pretty obvious from the series title.
There's also a lot of tasty food described or being cooked throughout the book and the author even included a few recipes right at the end of the book which I thought was a fabulous idea!
Also there's a love triangle in here, though the book doesn't really have much in the way of romance. I'd say it appears to be more of a beginning to a love triangle that shall be continued in succeeding books.
I thought the author made Mavis Templeton to be this all-powerful lady. The one who can ruin people's lives with the snap of a finger. Yet it isn't really clear how she's so powerful.
All in all...it was a light and rather hunger-inducing read ;)

I thought I would like this one better than I did, but it ended up being just ok for me.
I liked Katie and Lucy, loved how things started with them opened a bakery, loved how Katie learned of magic and that she was a witch. I even liked how Katie seemed to embrace this new side of herself.
What didn't work as well for me was the whole who killed the evil witch! By the time we learned who the bad guy was and how he changed his appearance I wanted to scream. How did no one else not be aware that his appearance changed, they couldn't all be that stupid.
I also didn't really like the whole Steve/Declan enemy thing. Steve seemed off to me, Declan nice, but the two of them together were like toddlers.

Well I have a bake shop, Zomick's Bakery and working there isn't much like it's explained in this book. Well I'll have to live with it I guess... Fun thing aside, the book was interesting thing to read,and I was hooked to it from the first page. A variety of characters, both male and female who mix up in the bakery with all that flour and other baking ingredients :) Not kosher at all. - Zomick's Bakery

Witches, Bakeries, Book clubs are three of my favorite things so this book scored on all three along with some great characters and a decent mystery.

3.5 stars. Good start to the series. I feel like this book has been on my TBR for a long time and I’m glad I finally got around to it. The characters were likeable and the bakery charming. I think it will be fun to see how Katie develops her powers. I liked the mystery and was surprised with the culprit.

I was hoping to have found another cute and worthwhile mystery series that included witches with the Magical Bakery Mystery series. Unfortunately, I will not continue this series, since it could not keep my interest.
It was a slow moving story that contained a lot of unnecessary details, which oddly enough were not explained properly so that the actual purpose of those descriptions seemed out of place, awkward and confusing.
I felt that the main character was only the vessel or object of moving the plot along. The author did not exert any effort to flesh her out and add some depth to her personality. I was unsure, if she was meant to represent a naive young woman or one, who possesses a sharp sense of humour.
The secondary characters, one in particular, came across as unstable and inconsistent. At times I felt very uncomfortable reading of her actions and behaviour (it did not include anything inappropriate, it just felt odd and peculiar).
Every other character felt perfectly created and one dimensional only to serve the purpose to move the plot along, without providing any believable interaction between characters.
The dialogue felt forced and unnatural and the overall narration came across as constrained, stumbling and stiff.
The murder mystery portion of this story made barely any sense and the "investigation" kept getting sidetracked by one or the other male character that seemed to be more important than figuring out "whodunnit".
I could continue picking out every point that led this story to fall short of its promise as a cozy witch mystery; however, I have to admit that after having read the Wishcraft series, my expectations may have been unreasonably high.
I think overall this is a very quick, easy beach read that can certainly make the reader forget their surroundings.

Delicious sweets, magic, and witches – SCORE! This book (or series rather) has been on my radar for quite a while now and has been sitting on my bookshelves waiting to be devoured. I am SO disappointed I didn’t pick it up earlier because I LOVED IT. I have always been a fan of magic and mayhem especially in terms of Wicca, and this book brings all of this to the surface. It’s honestly so much fun! I wished I had a magic bakery around. For those who haven’t read this one yet, this is a wonderful start to a magical series that will keep you entertained from the get go. On top of the magic and fun, this book is a cozy mystery as the main character, Katie, sets out to solve a murder of the towns most hated person. But in addition to finding out “who-dun-it” and clearing her uncles name, Katie is just learning that she comes from descendants of witch craft. This leads to some pretty interesting revelations…
A little snap shot as to what this book is about:
Katie moves to Savannah after her and her ex fiancé break up to basically start over. And when she learns that her aunt and uncle are opening a bakery, the timing couldn’t be any better! What starts off as just a move turns into a whirlwind of experiences. First, her uncle is framed for murdering the resident bitch in town. Then she learns that her aunts book club is actually a coven and that she too, has magical powers. But more than this, Katie has a knack for sleuthing and doesn’t stop until she finds out who the real killer is. Sounds fun right? IT IS!
Overall, this is a lovely start to a series that I can’t wait to continue reading. I loved the characters, the plot, the mystery, and recipes (yes, this book comes with some DELICOUS recipes that I can’t wait to try). Having never read anything by the author before I can guarantee that I will read a lot more of her work. This one in particular is light hearted and fun- a perfect weekend read! I highly recommend checking this one out if you enjoy a little witchcraft, mystery, and fun!

Overall, this is a lovely start to a series that I can’t wait to continue reading. I loved the characters, the plot, the mystery, and recipes (yes, this book comes with some DELICOUS recipes that I can’t wait to try). Having never read anything by the author before I can guarantee that I will read a lot more of her work. This one in particular is light hearted and fun- a perfect weekend read! I highly recommend checking this one out if you enjoy a little witchcraft, mystery, and fun!

As a Southern Belle myself, it was a pleasure to pick up this book and follow Katie Lightfoot as she travels from Ohio to a quaint little community in Savannah, Georgia. She is moving to help her Aunt and Uncle open up a bakery called the Honeybee Bakery. What made this book the most enjoyable for me is that Katie was unaware that she was a witch before coming to stay with her Aunt and Uncle. Watching Katie open up to the craft and fully accept it was awesome. As the reader I was starting to get hints early on that her Aunt was a witch before her Aunt had let her on to her that she was. Her Aunt was such a quirky and fun character and she was always up to some mischief!

I was impressed that this was a first in a series and I was really pleased at how much I found myself snickering and smiling as I read. I would love to be surrounded by a group of women like these. It was so nice to be right alongside Katie as she learned how to be a witch and it felt like I was learning with her! Her familiar (animal who helps to guide the witch) is so sweet and cute too! We all know how much I love animals!
I am looking so forward to reading more about this magical bakery! I cannot wait until the next installment is released and I highly suggest that if my readers have some downtime or a few hours to spare that they pick up a copy of this book and immerse themselves in a mystery that I did not solve until the murderer was revealed!

I picked this up on a whim, thinking it might be a fun new cozy mystery series, but was dismayed to find that it's really more Romance than mystery, and not the good kind, either.
For example: The MC is busy trying to get her new business off the ground and dealing with her first big customers, but the moment she locks eyes with some random guy in the shop, she's thinking about long term relationships and admiring how straight and white his teeth are. Later, the MC has just seen the strangled body of a woman she was just interacting with and hears that her uncle has been arrested for the murder, but that's not nearly as important to her as checking a stranger's hand for a wedding ring.
Audiobook, purchased from Audible. I gave it a full 45 minutes before DNF'ing at just over 10%. This was after absolutely nothing happened for the first 30 minutes except the introduction of a bunch of characters and gobs of exposition, unless the reader is interested in hearing about the color scheme of the MC's apron and how it matches her melon balls.

Why a Five Star rating right from the beginning? Well, let me see if I can convince you to pick up a copy and rate it likewise.
Location is Savannah, Georgia. Many reputable persons consider Savannah to be one of the most, if not the most, haunted locations in Northern United States of America. This story is Titled "Brownies and Broomsticks." Also, Savannah is famous for its delicious and mind numbing foods and a valid Sweet Tea contender. So, That makes it a five star site. Oh, and the going business is a Bakery and that has to be a five star business.
Characters are the next consideration. Well, we have a lovely new sleuth, Katie Lightfoot, a transplant to her Aunt and Uncle's Bakery from a learning job in Ohio. Katie is very likable as a witch who didn't know why she never felt like she fitted in 'back home.' Katie's parents are also witches that were hidden from their own children. Katie has a personality that attracts all ages and sexes of persons to her kindnesses. Katie is also a strong young woman who has survived a dreadful relationship in Ohio.
Surrounding Katie, are new friends and even some witches. We have Aunt Lucy, Uncle Ben, Mimsey, Bianca, Jaida, Cookie, Steve, and Declan, not to mention, Detective Quinn. Believe me these persons rate a five individually as well as in a pack!
Murder most cozy? As I said to my husband, upon the demise of the corpse, Well...certainly had it coming! Was it a cozy though? Oh yes, with nary a tendril of hair out of place. The murder mystery portion was a definite five star event and nasty perpetrators to boot.
Yes, I truly rate this book a five star and after I finish eating the Scones (Cheddar and Sage- recipe in the rear of the book,) I will write a review stating this fact!

2.5⭐️ This was a re-read via audio. I read this years ago and wanted to get back into some cozy books. Although it had the elements I typically enjoy reading about such as witchcraft, bakeries, and small southern towns this one fell flat for me. I thought I had enjoyed it enough my first time around and maybe it is just not the same via audio. Either way, I was disappointed and will not be continuing with the series.

This book is irritating. Very irritating.
I hate the MC. She believes to be better than everyone, know everything, and OF COURSE she does, because she's marysue.
She's 28 and she gets upset when a man old enough to be her father "patronizes" her. Because she is telling him how to do his job. Which he has been doing longer than you have existed, and you know NOTHING about it. But, OF COURSE she is right, because she's marysue.
She is being a real a-hole to her aunt (she supposedly loves) and her friends, because "magic is humbug and everyone knows it", but does she apologize when she finds out that they were right and she was wrong? Does she admit it? No. Of course not. She's marysue and everyone loves her and understands her! Of course it's OK to be a total ass!
Offensive and ignorant.

Yeah. She LITERALLY wears only one color top to toe. And...? You find that ridiculous? You would mock her if you opened your mouth?
There are two handsome men, who OF COURSE are interested in her, and hate each other, for obvious reason, and even though she just had her heart broken, she's all in objectifying these guys. Seriously, if a guy was writing of women like that, there would be a scream to high heavens about it. Objectifying is never OK. It's not equality. It's wrong when men do it, it's wrong when women do it. Stop it.

This girl has no resources, no experience, not even from reading mystery novels, no understanding of how things work and no interest either, but OF COURSE she solves the murder. OF COURSE.

This little book has been on my bookshelf for way to long. So I took it on a recent trip for light reading. Well, this one was so light it threatened to float away! A young woman finds herself in need of a change. What could be better than to move from Ohio to Savannah Georgia to help run a family bakery?
So begins a story replete with romance, murder and a coven of witches. This is Savannah after all! It's a light yummy read for the beach or a day spent hiding away from your adult responsibilities.

Katie Lightfoot leaves behind an assistant baker job in Ohio to come to Savannah to work with her Aunt Lucy and Uncle Ben as they open up the Honeybee Bakery. (The bakery is named after Lucy's cat.)
While whipping up delectable treats to sell Katie notices Lucy adding mysteries herbs to the recipes. Katie gets quite the surprise when she learns that Aunt Lucy is a witch and these herbal additions are for much more than flavor. The recipes are in fact spells!
After the bakery opens early to cater to the local business group the treasurer tries to stiff them for most of the bill. Ben tells her to fork over the full amount or he will go over her head to the president. After she threatens Ben with running the bakery out of business she storms out.
Within minutes the treasurer is found dead in her car and Uncle Ben is the prime suspect. Lucy and Katie team up with a few of their friends and mix up some spells to prove Ben is innocent and sweep the real killer all the way to jail.

Cates has created an ideal protagonist in Katie Lightfoot and surrounded her with some whimsical characters, including a hunky firefighter and some very special pets. (My hubby was a firefighter way back when, just saying.) She wrapped around them an intriguing mystery in a yummy setting that makes this story a joy to read.
The women in this story are so different from each other and would it not be for the shared trait of witchcraft they probably would not even know each other, let alone become friends. They realize they each have faults and accept each other for who they are.
The men on the other hand don't get along as well. Declan, the firefighter, can barely stand to be in the same room as Steve, the reporter. They have a past the fuels their fury but they both care about Katie.
Lucy and Ben have a strong relationship but both Lucy and Katie have to deal with Katie's mom's denial of the "family specialty".
Bailey Cates blends this all together masterfully giving us a charming cozy to devour. The bewitching book group and bakery foundations have been set in this first installment and has given us a taste of what's in store. I can't wait to see what the author conjures up for us next.

Brownies and Broomsticks is the first book in the A Magical Bakery Mystery series. And what an enjoyable story it is, too.
Katie Lightfoot heads for Savannah to put her culinary skills to work in her aunt and uncles' Honeybee Bakery. Katie, her Aunt Lucy and Uncle, and few close friends are busy putting the final touches in the Honeybee Bakery, with opening just a week away. Mavis Templeton of the Downtown Business Association stops in see if the Honeybee Bakery will be able to handle the groups business brunch in a few days. Aunt Lucy speaks up and says no problem. A menu is agreed upon and a price. The day of the brunch comes and the staff is on pins and needles. Most seem to be enjoying the brunch. As the meeting is breaking up Ms.Templeton gives Ben a check for the brunch, but the check is less than the agreed upon amount. They have a somewhat heated discussion about the check. Mavis heads to her car that is parked out front, while Ben heads for the alley behind the bakery to cool off and relax. Within in minutes it is reported that a woman is slumped over the wheel of her car, after having been shot. The woman is Mavis and of course Uncle Ben becomes the prime suspect. Next Katie learns that her aunt and the ladies that have been helping to get the bakery ready are in fact "good" witches. Katie learns that she also has the makings of being a witch, with the help of her aunt, Katie is learning to hone these skills. Throw in that two men, Declan a fireman and friend of Ben's and Steve Dawes a news reporter are eager to help Katie investigate who might have killed Templeton. The problem is that these men can't stand the sight of each other. But soon everyone is on track and using their own skills to determine the killer.
I think that will be a very enjoyable series and in the first book has given just a taste of the witches using their skills. So those that may stay clear of woo-woo books, give this series a try.

I think that will be a very enjoyable series and in the first book has given just a taste of the witches using their skills. So those that may stay clear of woo-woo books, give this series a try.
Since the story centers around the Honeybee Bakery, there are recipes included.

This was a new author and cozy mystery series for me. I really enjoyed this book and thought it was cute. Katie just moved to Savannah and is not learning she is a witch so she now has a lot to learn. I liked Katie's aunt Lucy and uncle Ben they seem like nice people and a cute couple. When Katie's uncle is accused of murder she knows he had nothing to do with it and is out to prove it no matter what anyone tells her. I thought is was nice how Quinn the detective started listening to her and using the information she was giving him. I also really like Declan he seems like a nice guy for Katie. Now Steve on the other hand there is something about him that does not sit right with me and I do not care for him. The "book" club ladies each have unique personalities and I hope we learn more about them as the series goes along. When we find out who the killer is you will be surprised as it is not who you would think. I am looking forward to starting the next one in this series.

I always think I am going to tire of foodie cozies...and then I read one like BROWNIES AND BROOMSTICKS and know that I am being silly. I love foodie cozies. I get hungry and I want to find the places where the books take place. I'd love to work at this particular bakery with Katie Lightfoot and her aunt.
The paranormal aspect is mellow with Katie discovering her abilities as a witch with her aunt's guidance.
I love that there are two intriguing men in Katie's life now. Three if you count Mungo the pup that invites himself into Katie's home and life. Usually there's only one man and things go from there. This time there are two men and they don't like each other much. But they both dig Katie.
Then there's the murder almost immediately in the story. No one is going to miss the victim and everyone wants to help the accused shown as innocent.
Super fun and I can't wait to read the next one.
