"A differenza di quanto generalmente si creda, gli uomini del Medioevo sapevano osservare assai bene la fauna e la flora, ma non pensavano affatto che ciò avesse un rapporto con il sapere, né che potesse condurre alla verità. Quest'ultima non rientra nel campo della fisica, ma della il reale è una cosa, il vero un'altra, diversa. Allo stesso modo, artisti e illustratori sarebbero stati perfettamente in grado di raffigurare gli animali in maniera realistica, eppure iniziarono a farlo solo al termine del Medioevo. Dal loro punto di vista, infatti, le rappresentazioni convenzionali - quelle che si vedono nei bestiari miniati - erano più importanti e veritiere di quelle naturalistiche. Per la cultura medievale, preciso non significa vero. Del resto, cos'è una rappresentazione realistica se non una forma di rappresentazione convenzionale come tante altre? Non è radicalmente diversa né costituisce un progresso. Se non si cogliesse questo aspetto, non si capirebbe niente né dell'arte medievale né della storia delle immagini. Nell'immagine tutto è convenzione, compreso il 'realismo'".

126 books251 followersPastoureau was born in Paris on 17 June 1947. He studied at the École Nationale des Chartes, a college for prospective archivists and librarians. After writing his 1972 thesis about heraldic bestiaries in the Middle Ages, he worked in the coins, medals and antiquities department of the French National Library until 1982.
Since 1983 he has held the Chair of History of Western Symbolism (Chaire d'histoire de la symbolique occidentale) and is a director of studies at the Sorbonne's École pratique des hautes études. He is an academician of the Académie internationale d'héraldique (International Academy of Heraldry) and vice-president of the Société française d'héraldique (French Heraldry Society). When he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lausanne in 1996, he was described as an eminent scholar who has made a radical contribution to several disciplines.

Apro questo 2017 a livello saggistico con questo bellissimo testo, ne ero molto incuriosita anche perché l'edizione é particolarmente curata e devo dire che non ne sono rimasta delusa. Con un linguaggio semplice e lineare Pastoureau ci spiega quali siano le concezioni zoologiche medievali, come gli animali venivano rappresentati e quali caratteristiche portavano con sé. È stato particolarmente interessante sapere perché animali come il cervo o il leone siano, secondo la cultura europea nobili, coraggiosi e sovrani e come al contrario invece il cinghiale, il ragno o il serpente siano animali infimi,viziosi, diabolici. Ogni animale è corredato dalla corrispettiva miniatura che ci fa capire ancora di più quanto la conoscenza zoologica fosse approssimativa e spesso vicina più al significato religioso e simbolico che non a quello fattuale.

Pastoureau, Mediävist und Professor in Paris, gibt einen Überblick über die Verwendung von Tieren in mittelalterlichen Texten. Verwendung ist dabei sehr wohl mehrdeutig zu verstehen, denn neben bildlichen Darstellungen von Texten geht er auch auf die Verwendung von tierischem Materialien bei der Erstellung von Büchern ein. Darum geht es im ersten Teil "Das Tier im Buch". Im zweiten Teil "Das Tier im Bild" werden verschiedene Darstellungsweisen betrachtet: als großflächiges Bild, als Schmuck von Initialen oder Umrandung, usw. Im dritten und letzten Teil "Das Tier in der Geschichte" geht es um den Stellenwert des Tiers für das christliche mittelalterliche Europa.
Hervorzuheben sind die zahlreichen Abbildungen im Buch: immerhin 45 Stück verteilen sich auf nur 110 Seiten Text. Zu jeder Abbildung gibt es einen kurzen Erklärungstext. Zum Teil wiederholt sich Passagen im eigentlich Text des Buches, was jedoch verschmerzbar ist. Ein kleiner Wermutstropfen jedoch bleibt: Es gibt kein Abbildungsverzeichnis, aber im Text wird nur auf die Abbildungen verwiesen, was gelegentlich zu wildem Hin- und Herblättern führt, bis man die entsprechende Stelle im Buch gefunden hat.
Der Text ist recht kurz: nur 110 Seiten. Dem studierten Historiker, der im Studium bereits mit ähnlichen Texten in Berührung gekommen ist, wird sich vermutlich nichts Neues hier erschließen. Mir als interessiertem Laien gefiel es jedoch sehr gut. Am Ende des Buches gibt es auch eine Literaturliste, die vermutlich eine Kreuzung aus Referenzen und empfohlener weitergehender Literatur ist.
Das Buch ist ein Auszug aus dem ebenfalls beim Primusverlag erschienenen "Das leuchtende Mittelalter" (302 Seiten).

I read this book in Italian, it’s originally in French, but it’s easiest for me to review in English.
I loved this book. It was just so interesting to hear the wild theories medieval Europe had about animals. Bestiaries were mostly just more ways of talking about faith and morality, basically a blend of Aesop’s fables, an animal encyclopedia and the bible. As such they weren’t really trying to be accurate, although notably most of their wild theories related to animals outside of Europe or entirely fictional, and so would rarely be falsified. The author repeatedly insists that it’s a mistake to judge medieval bestiaries by modern zoological standards, and to some extent he has a point but if anyone back then actually wanted to know something about elephants or camels, they’d have to just go and see one for themselves rather than read anything.
I really enjoyed it the way I would a book about myths; it’s just fantastical stories. I learned a lot about the priorities of medieval scholars, and the type of symbolism they engaged in.
One notable little insight I had from this book, that’s never explicitly said but the breadcrumbs are all there, is that the church and writers of these books were actively anti-expert; they disdained cleverness and intelligence. Instead they promoted obedience and blind faith. I couldn’t say how much it was intentional, but the fact that Romans and Greeks found owls intelligent and worthy of admiration, but medieval scholars found them servants of the devil, is quite telling. Likewise for foxes and crows.
Generally this book immerses you into the medieval mindset through the stories they told each other about animals.

Davvero consigliato se si vuole scrivere fantasy e avere quindi ispirazione per inventarsi creature fantastiche.

Eccellente viaggio tra i bestiari medievali, da un punto di vista rigorosamente storico e in un'edizione illustrata ben fatta. Come avverte Pastoureau, è inutile approcciare i bestiari medievali con sufficienza e magari tradendo un sorriso di superiorità nei confronti di tutti quei miniatori e pre-naturalisti che si cimentarono nelle prime remote classificazioni del mondo animale. La storia va letta e considerata tenendo sempre ben presente il momento storico pertinente: solo così facendo si potrà giungere a una profonda comprensione del sapere umano.

Très riche, peu complet (mais l'essentiel est là), c'est un petit ouvrage très utile et très facile à lire.
Il permet non seulement de comprendre la mentalité ecclésiastique et artistique du Moyen-âge, mais c'est aussi une très bonne source d'inspiration pour écrire/dessiner soi-même des œuvres inspirées de cette époque où s'y déroulant.

delizioso e straripante di curiosità ! La tenerezza dell'ignorante ingenuità medievale talvolta scalda davvero il cuore. Un dolcetto succoso per chi scrive di medioevo...

Chi di noi non ha mai visto un quadro di epoca medievale? E chi di noi non si è mai chiesto, osservandolo, come mai ci fossero certi animali in contesti apparentemente non pertinenti ad essi, o come mai avessero una data forma e colore? Ebbene, questo saggio a cura dello storico Pastoureau ci svela risvolti e simbolismi delle "bestie" del Medioevo.
Interessantissimo e spiegato in modo scorrevole e facilmente comprensibile e fruibile, questo testo ci mostra (con allegati esempi visivi) tutte le sfumature delle credenze dell'epoca. Ci viene spiegato come mai, spesso e volentieri, aspetto e dimensioni degli animali nelle rappresentazioni di quei tempi fossero ben distanti dall'aspetto veritiero delle belve in questione: era tutta una questione di significati nascosti, religione e simbolismo. Era meno importante rispecchiare la realtà delle cose rispetto a raffigurare tramite quelle creature (che fossero animali reali o immaginari) una data qualità, famiglia, sentimento o storia. E così il cervo è nobile e il leone coraggioso, il serpente diabolico e il cinghiale vile.
Vi farà vedere i quadri medievali con altri occhi, e con essi anche una serie di film e libri che hanno usato certi animali come icone figurative di determinate caratteristiche celate; avrete uno sguardo più vigile e critico, più portato a scavare nel profondo anziché fermarsi alla superficie.
Per gli autori di fantasy o di libri ambientati in quell'epoca, poi, non è da escludere il valore di questo libro come saggio d'ispirazione e approfondimento: potrete nascondere messaggi nelle figure di queste "bestie", usarle per simboleggiare qualcosa in particolare, fare di esse emblemi di religioni e credenze, scegliere di inserire l'una o l'altra in stemmi nobiliari a seconda di quale volete sia la caratteristica di quella famiglia, e così via.
