Eighteen-year-old Adam Gillman has trained for twelve years to earn a coveted spot on the Supreme Elemental’s elite sentry squad. His brother, Felix, is the commander, but Adam is still thrilled when his official assignment to serve Alexander Pederson comes.
He moves into nicer quarters and can stop getting up at four a.m. to complete his mandated work out time. He still rises early though, because he needs the solitude of early morning to practice his airmaking Element—something that Adam has kept secret from everyone, even Felix, because he can’t be both an Airmaker and a sentry.
When Alex assigns him to kill a group of rogue Elementals, he balks at completing his mission for the first time. See, his only friend is Isaiah Hawking, and he’s the Earthmover on the accused Council. When faced with the prospect of killing him, Adam finds he can’t do it.
He’s well trained in assassination, but he thought he’d be murdering bad guys—not innocents.
When Alex buries the Elemental Academy—and kills over one thousand Elementals—in a fit of rage, Adam’s loyalty cracks. When he discovers that Alex is really a woman, and his brother’s lover, he defects. He hops from city to city, from Elemental school to Elemental school, always escaping only minutes before Felix can embed a knife in his heart or a tsunami can make a classroom his watery grave.
He tries to fight back, but he’s just one Airmaster with exceptional tracking skills. He does his best to warn those in danger, but as the last Elemental school goes up in flames, he knows he needs to get some real firepower on his side.
ELEMENTAL RUSH is a prequel novella to the full-length futuristic fantasy novel, ELEMENTAL HUNGER, which is coming on June 12, 2014. Look for the final installment, ELEMENTAL RELEASE, on July 1, 2014.
3-time USA Today bestselling author Elana Johnson writes adult contemporary beach romance. She is the author of over 130 books across two names, and there's nothing better than sun, sand, and swoon-worthy kisses! Unless it's a sweet-and-sexy cowboy - read those under her pen name of Liz Isaacson. Or an emotional, heartfelt women's fiction novel - read those under her pen name of Jessie Newton.
This book was a short novella teaser to herald the rest of the series. It did a great job of introducing readers to the world of the Elementals and the main character’s dilemma. It ended on an unfinished note that leaves readers wanting to know more. The Elemental talents in the story are fascinating, and perhaps similar to the movie, The Last Airbender (earth, air, water, and fire). I’m curious to find out what will happen to Adam and his brother Felix, although I generally don’t read series (I have so many books to read, I can’t stick with one particular set).
Alex's intentions are unclear and it looks as if Adam, now a fugitive, and the Outcasts are going to have to find a solution to the problems the world is facing. More politics than elemental magic at this stage. A little disappointing, from my point of view.
INITIAL THOUGHTS I am approaching this novella with mixed feelings. On one hand as I have read other books by Elana Johnson I admit to having high expectations, on the other hand I don't usually enjoy this type of fantasy. So I'm looking forward to finding out what this one is like.
MY REVIEW I purchased this novella from Amazon.co.uk for the reasonable price of 77p. The cover is quite striking with the lightening strike in a moody looking sky. Would I pick this one up from a book store shelf? Yes I find the cover would attract my eyes to it and of course having read another title by Elana Johnson, would also attract me to this title to learn more. The main characters are two brothers, Adam Gillman and his older brother Felix. It is clear that Adam looks up to his brother, his ambition being to work alongside of him and be as strong as him. Adam has been training long hours and working hard to prove himself as a good sentry guard. Adam's first assignment finally comes through and he has his wish of working with his brother Felix to protect the Supreme Elementalist Alex. Adams first assignment is to find and kill a small group of apparently rogue Elental's. Adam find's himself questioning the order especially as he has met one of the Elementalist's he has been told to kill. Adam feels a kinship with the Elemental's as he too can control the Air, though he has had no training and has not even told his brother about the things he can do. Then Alex doe's something really strange by burying the Elemental Academy under a whole lot of rubble killing in excess of a thousand innocent elemental's within it. Adam realises he cannot serve as sentry and follow orders from someone who could do such a thing with no prior provocation. Adams quietly follow's his brother Felix, who ends up in Alex's private rooms. There Adam makes a shocking discovery that Alex is in fact a woman. The story then follows Adam and his decision to flee his former job. Now Adam decides to go to an Academy to develop his Air element, but can he learn in an academy safely or is it Alex's plan to destroy them all? Why is Alex hiding the fact she is a woman. Why did his own brother Felix not tell him? Can Adam outrun Felix and his men and get to the safety of an academy and live in peace. I really enjoyed this book. To begin with I thought I wouldn't get into with it being about guards and academies for elementalist's etc but once I got into the novella which is from Adam's point of view I felt myself drawn in and hooked, wanting to know what would happen next. At the beginning of the novella, which I read on my kindle is an area map of the United Territories which include the capital city of Tarpulin. I think the map will be more relevant and clearer to see if you have a paperback, as in my opinion maps tend to not be very clear on kindle devices. This small detail did not impair my enjoyment of this novella. There's so much more detail and facts I could go into about this book, it's amazing how Elena has crammed so much into a novella! I enjoyed the fast pace and different plots running alongside each other. The little clues that tell you Alex was a woman before Adam actually discover's this. You feel the hurt Adam feels that his brother Felix has kept this huge fact a secret from him. In fact Felix is not only hiding the fact Alex is a woman, he is in a relationship with her. So did I enjoy the novella? I was skeptical at the beginning, but ended up totally immersed and loving every word. Would I recommend the novella? I would, in fact I've recommended it to my daughter already. I think it will appeal to those readers that love titles such as Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas. Would I want to read more of this series? I definitely will be doing so! I've purchased the Girls On Fire Box Set and Bk#1, Elemental Hunger features in it. Would I read other books by Elana Johnson? I have already read Elana Johnson's Elevate and really loved that too. I fully intend to read more of Elana Johnson's books. I just need more reading hours in the day!
This is a novella, kind of an introduction for Elemental Hunger. We learn about the world, and the injustice that we can find in it. How the people are segregated and obedience is required. We follow Adam as he is trying to hide his magic so he can follow in his brother's footsteps, and how he starts to see the problems around him and decides to start thinking by himself. It's short, but it works well as an introduction to the world, and since I recommend reading Elemental Hunger, I recommend to read Elemental Rush first.
This novella (first in a series) is a little odd. It's the introduction to the world Johnson has created, but the world remains mostly a mystery. The narrative gives you enough to understand how the world works on a basic level, especially its government, but there's not much else. The main character is a little dry, as is the writing (probably because of the main character). The conflict is very easy to understand, yet I felt there was something missing. The story felt only half-way where it wanted to be, which made the ending a little sudden and the middle a little meandering.
All those conflicted feelings aside, I liked the magic in the book, which is based on the four classic elements of nature (air, water, fire, and earth). And I thought these elements were used in interesting ways, and created a very particular vision of how the magic in this world works, which I thought was fun. Similar to "bending" in Avatar: the Last Airbender, but specific to this world enough to distinguish itself.
Overall, some very promising elements, but I was left feeling like it wasn't enough.
I'll probably check out the second part of the series (which is a full novel), because I'm definitely curious to see where Johnson takes her world and how she expands upon the rapid glimpse we get of it in this first installment.
This is a novella which is a prequel to Elemental Hunger. Elana creates the most interesting worlds in her books and I love the richness and depth to them. Her characters are complex and interesting to read about. I am often surprised and am always sucked into the story and can't put it down until the end. The main character in this story is a wind elemental, but he is hiding it from his brother and most people that know him. It will be interesting to see what he does with it in the future. I am very much a lover of romance and so I was sad when there wasn't any in this book, but I am sure there will be in the next one. I will let you know when I am finished reading it.
I picked up this book as I needed something new to read and it was slow going in the beginning to get into but some novels are so I perservered. Adam and Felix had a strange relationship as although they were brothers, they really had nothing in common apart from joining up to be a sentry and you could tell that Adam idolised his brother. He changed his opinion very quickly once Felix's true colours were revealed and the pace did pick up after that but there was not enough action in this book to hold my interest.
This was a thorough introduction into the world of Adam Gillman. As I started the book, I had a different expectation but I really ended up liking it. Adam has always followed and strived to emulate his older, very successful, brother. But as he rises in the ranks of the sentries, he learns that everyone is keeping secrets. This part one follows his story as he learns to think for himself and stand up for what he believes in. This part one is short and doesn't have a very thorough story plot. Read it bearing in mind that it's just an introduction.
This book was good, but nothing that had me dying to read more. I know it is the prequel to another book, so I think I will still give it a try since I got it free on Kindle also. It reminded me a lot of the last air bender, and I honestly do not really know where the story is going to go aside from a big war that will be all out and blah blah.... If I did not have the next book for free I would stop reading, but I guess I will give it a go soon enough.... Not a bad book....just nothing overly original or special for it to really grab me and pull me in!
ELEMENTAL RUSH is a great introduction to Elana Johnson's futuristic fantasy world. We're introduced to Adam, a young man hiding his Elemental status while serving as a sentry to the Supremist, but about to find out that those he trusts and serves have been lying to him. With academies being destroyed and people being murdered, Adam winds up on the run as his world goes up in flames around him--and this novella is just the beginning. Bring on ELEMENTAL HUNGER!
Adam is a young man in the middle of many problems. He’s hiding a secret power, is asked to do the wrong thing, and has to escape enemy attacks. The world of the Elementals, their powers, and all the intrigue between them was very exciting. The tension between the brothers, Adam and Felix, was amazing—familial dissonance and the confusion involved was another great layer in this action-packed novella. I'm glad I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

I read this after the novel, and absolutely loved finding out Adam's back story, and learning more about his brother and the Supremist. It added so much more to the series. The story felt so much more complete than I was expecting from a novella, too. I really enjoyed it.
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
The only problem with this book is that it finished to soon !!! This is the first time I have read anything by the author Elana Johnson. I don't like leaving spoilers on stories as I think it spoils it for new readers to know how the storyline pans out. Therefore my review will be short. I found the Story to have a unique angle. I read mainly fantasy novels but as yet not one, with this kind of imaginative storyline. The main characters are strong, you could feel the emotions going through them, which I find only a good author can do. In one short novella, you find. Loyalty, betrayal and the questionable mind of being lead by the nose, is this right or wrong? An individual view I believe. I was slightly taken a back by the abrupt ending, until it was revealed this a series of novella's. One I would definitely look to continue reading, so I can find out how life evolves from the bitterness of events in this one
