I previously reviewed "Maps" [ my review ] conceived and illustrated by extremely the talented Mizielinskis duo. That was a real treat. (Be sure you go back and read it.) Now there is a Maps Activity Book by these same artists.
Young students and budding artists have at their fingertips a book of creative coloring and drawing activities. This will help them discover their world and have fun while doing it stimulating them mentally and artistically.
Throughout the activity book, they can visit a variety of countries and learn tidbits about that country. They then have an activity that incorporates that information. Example: On the map of Africa, they can draw and color several animals indigenous to Africa. Or for Japan they can design and color a kimono.
In the United Kingdom map outline, they can draw castles all over the place and of their own design because, you know, there once were many castles there.
This is not your standard geography project where the student draws a map of a country and fills in places. No, this is a fun way to learn about our World. This would be a great activity book for children in the home or to be used in a classroom setting. Not dependent on the predecessor, Maps, it is independent though it wouldn't hurt at all to have both available.

The MAPS ACTIVITY BOOK from Big Picture Press is a delightful drawing, learning, and coloring book designed to teach kids about the wide world around them.
I loved the simple designs and interspersed blue/green/tan coloration throughout, which allowed for the "readers" own imagination to really come through onto the page. The activity pages have easy to understand instructions, while the blurbs of extra information are interesting and well-written.
I only wanted a little more organization, perhaps in the form of an introductory paragraph on the inside of the front cover. As an adult who will be recommending this book to young readers and perhaps using it in a classroom setting, I needed a little bit of guidance to get started. However, the young readers who pick up this book will not have that problem and will love just jumping right in to the activities!
With the perfect combination of fun activities, self-guided learning, educational content, and personal exploration through drawing and coloring, the MAPS ACTIVITY BOOK is perfect for classrooms, library activities, and young explorers and artists.

This book is called Maps Activity Book. There are activities to do on each page about different countries around the world.
I did learn a few things from this book. I learned that in Mexico they celebrate the Day of the Dead and that they have skulls made of sugar.
Some of the activities were difficult because I had to guess about what they were asking you to do. I think there is another book that you are supposed to read first, but we don’t have that book. There is a little fact on the back of each page, but there is not a lot of information in this book. Also, some of the drawing activities were a bit difficult for me. I did like that there were so many projects. I haven’t done them all yet. On some pages you really need to use your imagination. So far my favorite is the Make Up Your Own Country project. Another activity asks you to guess and draw what the people of the country on that page might eat.
This book would be good for kids ages seven to ten who like maps and who like to draw and color.

July 31, 2016As an enhancement to the original publication Big Picture Press published the Maps Activity Book written and illustrated by Aleksandra Mizielinska and Daniel Mizielinski on July 1, 2014. Smaller in size, 12 by 8 4/5, this paperback with special binding for ease of page removal delivers interesting challenges involving drawing, coloring, research, and creative imagining and thinking. On the back of each of the thirty-six activities a tiny character, children from around the world, impart more fascinating facts in a single speech balloon.

I love maps. This companion book to the author's earlier Maps is fun and enticing. I want it!
