As someone who is, admittedly, not very religious, I was hesitant to read this book. I was especially unsure of committing myself to an 11-week study with almost daily participation (yikes). But, learning about scripture and becoming a better mother ARE two pursuits I’m interested in. So, I thought it was worth a try. I’m very glad I did.

Reading the daily chapter became one of my favorite parts of the day. (I did it while sitting in parent pick-up). I found Kruger (the author) to be completely relatable. She writes in a way that is funny, sincere, and insightful. I took a lot away from this study and plan on reading it again in the future.

(2025) Second time through = even more convicting, equipping, and helpful.

(2023) The best laid-out Bible study! Incredibly grateful for the content, formatting, and how short each day was. It includes the Bible passages in the text so you don’t have to have multiple books, you can just throw it in the diaper bag or purse and do it when you can.

It’s so, so, so good. I’m so sad it’s over. I wish it was a series and I could do the next one.

I’m probably going to start including this in baby shower gifts because it’s so helpful for new moms to maintain nourishment for their souls as they adjust to crazy newborn life. So grateful for Melissa Kruger and this study especially!

Good for what it was - a devotional book targeted at mothers of varying Christian growth. In the second half of the book, Kruger uses of the fruits of the spirit to show 1) who God is, 2) who we are in light of that, and 3) how we should be in relation to our families/children - this was both an original approach to a book on motherhood and was often very convicting. I also appreciated the chapters which proceeded those dealing with the fruits of the spirit about walking in prayer (chapter 3) and ordering one's home (chapter 4).

The major downside is that the questions would have benefited from better editing - some were repetitive and some felt like they were just filling in the space on the pages. It's a topical Bible study on motherhood as opposed to a study of a book of the Bible, which meant that in my church it had the best turnout of all the Bible studies I've participated in but our weekly discussions were less focused and less Biblical than in previous semesters.

Due to the season of motherhood, it has taken me literal years to get through this. Also, I began it with a friend then we moved so I started over with a new friend.

This is a fab book. I love the way it is laid out, and am especially grateful that all the Bible passages that questions are focused on are included in full above the questions so you just need the book - not having a Bible close by isn’t even an excuse. It also means you don’t get distracted when you use your phone for the Bible on it.

Melissa Kruger is so down to earth and owns up to not having it all together. Her examples aren’t trivial like a lot of these books on motherhood seem to be. She goes deep and asks good questions.

Would highly recommend this, and definitely a good one for study with another mum in a similar or slightly different season of life to learn from each other as well as the book itself and God’s word.

Favorite Quotes:
We need Jesus more than anything else in the season of motherhood. We need His grace to show us our faults. We need His cross to atone for our sin. We need His sympathy to approach His throne with confidence. We need His wisdom to guide our decisions. We need His Word to revive our souls. We need His love to fill us and overflow to our children. We need Him to be in control so we can let go of control. We need His strength when our strength is gone.

In Jesus the performance pendulum stops - both the pride of success and the despair of failure are absorbed by grace.

We can only bear the fruit of patience when we have something to be patient about.

A peaceful mother keeps a loose grip on her plans and clings instead to God, entrusting her children to His care.

As moms it is easy to excuse our worry as a form of love. However, anxiety is actually a lack of trust in the Lord and a form of prideful independence.

Continually looking back to the Cross and forward to heaven is our greatest hope for joy today.

When we hold on to hurt, frustration, and anger, bitterness will take root. Gossip, slander, envy and malice are the fruit of a bitter heart. Entrusting to the Lord the wrongs committed against us allows us to forgive. We do not have to control other people's behavior, because we trust that God is in control.

Our ability to give thanks in all circumstances is not because every situation we encounter is good but because the God who ordained the circumstances is good.

When I have learnt to love God better than my earthly dearest, I shall love my earthly dearest better than I do now. - C.S. Lewis

“When I miss a physical meal, I get tired, my head aches, and my stomach growls. When I miss repeated spiritual meals, my soul grows weary, my patience wears thin, and peace gives way to anxiety and worry. Setting aside time for prayer and Bible reading is crucial for a well-nourished soul.
Private study and prayer, corporate worship, and small-group Bible studies have all encouraged and sustained my walk with God in the season of motherhood. These are also the areas I am most often tempted to put last on my list when other urgent matters clamor for my attention. Sometimes I even feel guilty for taking a moment to quietly slip away to read my Bible and pray by myself. The messy rooms and dirty dishes seem to scream louder than Jesus’s quiet call, ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest’ (Matthew 11:28). However, becoming a woman who can laugh at the days to come begins by abiding in the One who can give us lasting joy.”

This was a great study full of Biblical encouragement for motherhood. I loved that the Bible passages were included so I could easily read this book while nursing or on the go. I’ll definitely reread it in a few years.

As a busy mom, it can often be extremely difficult to find time alone with God. This book really helped me do that. This devotional is comprised of 11 weeks of studies with 5 days of lessons per week. The lessons are interactive in that there are questions that have blank spaces below for the reader to answer. One of my favorite things about the setup of this book is that all of the Bible verses are written out in each lesson. This is a nice time saver. The back of the book has some nice features including 12 important verses or moms to memorize and 12 topical verses for children (some of the topics include joyfulness, obedience, and faith). There is also a study guide at the end to use in small groups or for more personal reflection.

As far as the lessons go, I found them to be very beneficial and helpful to spiritual growth. The writing style is very easy to follow and the author seems very relatable. I have had many moments in my life as a mother when I felt like I was alone in this journey. This book helped me to remember that I'm not alone and that being a mother is one of the most important roles in life.

I would definitely recommend this book to any weary mom out there who longs to grow closer to God.

I received this book from Blogging For Books in exchange for an honest review.

Two young mothers and I walked with God in their season of motherhood for the past three months with this book.

What a blessing we received!

In the study, Kruger provides four days of study in God’s Word and a fifth day of reflecting on the Scriptures and application. She interjects tips from her own experience.

I was delighted to see the mothers incorporate her tips the same week that we learned them.

Their husbands even noticed a difference and began discussing the study with these beautiful women.

Kruger provided memory verses for the moms and 12 verses for the children with explanations. I designed cards with these verses on them for the moms to place in strategic areas in their homes.

Kruger encouraged us to pray before we began each day’s devotion and to close our time in prayer as we reflected on how we could apply the Scriptures to our lives as daughters of God, mothers, and wives.

Day 1 of the fifth week reflects God’s “deep, unchanging love for His children.”

“All Scripture points to one ultimate conclusion: our Father treasures us and loves us dearly–all the way to the cross and back. Being rooted firmly in His love allows us to overflow with love for our children.” Melissa Kruger (p. 85)

Melissa Kruger’s love for God and motherhood touched us deeply. We have a new appreciation of motherhood. Everyday busyness can become moments to reflect on God’s love.

This book is a must-have for young mothers.

I loved this particular book because it just has tons of Scripture passages in it so it’s packed with truth. It also has a lot of questions that you answer by writing. I love that because it keeps my mind engaged. When having my quiet time, I sometimes find myself falling asleep or zoning out, but it’s hard to do that when you have to answer questions. Here are a few quotes from the last part of the book that kind of sum it up.

“Today you have been given everything you need to abound in every good work. So often, I think I need more hours in the day, more arms for my tasks, and an extra brain to complete everything on my to-do list. However, the Lord promises us that He will faithfully provide. 2 Cor 9:8.”

“I thought motherhood would amplify my virtues as I poured out love on my children. In reality, motherhood has exposed just how much I need Jesus. We need Jesus more than anything else.”

“Time together will make us look like Him. As we abide in Jesus, He changes us from the inside out.”

Finally got around to finishing this book I started in Bible study earlier last year. A fantastic and crucial resource for Christian moms. This book helped me to keep perspective on grace through parenting. My only critique is her description of the Proverbs 31 woman as being factually an older woman when it can’t be proven that she was in the cultural context of that time (very conceivably she could have been 30-35 years old with teenagers) in the prime of her life. Additionally, this book was very restrictive in audience due to the many perspectives and examples of a typical traditional family. It would have been great for her to mention non traditional Christian family types—single moms, moms whose husbands aren’t Christians, families where both parents work from home, and working moms whose husbands stay at home. Otherwise a great book!!

This devotional style bible study is AWESOME for any mom looking to really walk with God during this busy, exhausting, joyful season of motherhood. Working through this book has been an incredible journey. What i LOVE about it, is that the author really brings you right back to what the bible says about living and parenting. She gives practical tips for mothering your children, and takes us right to the source!!!! She also shares stories from her own journey of motherhood, and it was so fun to read how other moms have trusted God's provision for their daily guidance! I have truly enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it. I know it's one I'll be adding to my "read again" stack.

I absolutely love this devotional! The timing of it was perfect as I was a mom of a four year old and a newborn when I read it and was worn and needing encouragement. I would do the readings when I was nursing the baby and loved that the scriptures were all written within the text. I didn't have to try and switch between book and Bible while holding the baby. Each day that I read was exactly what I needed to hear specifically for that day and I am so thankful for the hope and peace it helped bring me during that season of motherhood. An easy read and way to grow closer to God even when you are caring for little ones and don't have a lot of extra time.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I didn’t love the lack of theological depth. The study was more observation and application, rather than following the inductive study method. On the other hand, I did like how specific the focus was on each of the fruits of the Spirit for each week. It caused me to think about motherhood in light of each in a way I wouldn’t have otherwise.

Given that, I would recommend this book with reservation. I wouldn’t let this book replace regular Bible study, but it is good supplemental reading.

This book is valuable for any relationship but especially for a mother's relationship with their family. My only daughter is a baby and this book guided me through how I might establish firm foundations in my home. I know this book will be useful and nourishing through the different phases of motherhood as the group of women I studied with all gained so much... We had many wonderful, helpful, and vulnerable discussions in the 11 weeks we met together. So glad to have come together with fellow Christian mamas ❤️ I'll miss our book group meetings.

I very much enjoyed this study. It was the book chosen for our ladies study at church. I liked how it was broken up into daily studies which were good for personal quiet times at home and easily manageable even with a busy schedule. It was personally encouraging but I liked the discussions and openness it brought up in our study even more as the women worked through it and shared with one another.

This book has been a huge encouragement to me in my motherhood journey. I love the emphasis on God's grace, and how we don't have to just perform more or try harder to be a great mom, but trust in Jesus and walk daily with Him in prayer and His Word. As a writer, I also love how Kruger includes space in her book for me to write answers and prayers.

The content of this book was very relevant and the writing was easy to digest and applicable! Plus I love that all the scripture was in the book, it made it easy to grab and go read wherever. Each chapter focuses basically on different fruits of the spirit and what that means as a mother. I very much appreciate this book! I’m sure I’ll pick it up again and again.

I wanted to like this so much bc I was reading it with my church’s mom’s group… but dreaded every time i had to read it. I wish the questions were more about personal experience and reflection instead of straight up reading comprehension about the verses. Definitely some good advice and reminders embedded throughout the book, but as a whole, was rough to finish. On to the next 😪
