(Shared from the first in this series because I read them both at the same time.)
This book and it’s other edition are probably great exercises if you’re already artistic or dabbling in hand lettering. I wanted to sort of know where to start and the books’ notion that if you can write the alphabet you can do hand lettering is maybe over-selling a tad. There were beautiful, colorful examples and stories from artists, nearly every one said some version of “I started doodling letters in 2nd grade and have been doing it since!” Well, I didn’t doodle or create my own alphabets at any point in my life but I wanted some basic instructions for basic hand lettering but I didn’t find it in these books unfortunately. 3/5 stars because there is good information and lots to look at as examples but not a good book for someone who has zero previous artistic lettering skill.
Gorgeous lettering in this book, but it's beyond my ability as a newbie! But if you're already pretty artistic, there are plenty of scripts to mimic in here.
Not many examples inside, but inspiring enough. Detailed instructions were given on how to create the lettering styles shown, but almost all of them were so simple to do (you could copy them just by looking at them) that I felt this wasn't necessary at all, and a waste of space.
This book is amazing to learn the origins of different letterers and the different styles and mediums they use. This book really helped me think outside the box and realize that there's more to lettering than just a pen and paper while at the same time that's all you need! This book focuses on letter writing as an organic art and uses handwriting as an inspiration while the foundations are still in the background. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in lettering to gain a new perspective. I have this book on my wishlist now!
I really liked the first book, Creative Lettering, and this book is even better than the first one. I'm not sure if I liked the alphabets from these artists better than the first book, or if they (the alphabets) just seem easier to try? I don't know, exactly. But something about this book seems more accessible to me. Both books are good. This book I enjoyed more.
I'm seeking to improve my handwriting by taking it slooooowwww. This book had a lot of neat ideas and fonts to practice with. Along with great pen recommendations. I've always been a sucker for a fantastic, expensive pen. I look forward to more books like this.
I have been intrigued by hand lettering for awhile and wanted to check out some books at the library. There were plenty of patterns that I liked and was inspired by. Can't wait to try out a lot of them and make a little book of font styles!
