An unlikely couple from opposing areas of society checks into an upscale hotel and shares twelve hours of passion, con games, and violence that culminate in bliss--and murder.
Eric Jerome Dickey was born in Memphis, Tennessee and attended the University of Memphis (the former Memphis State), where he earned his degree in Computer System Technology. In 1983, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in engineering.
After landing a job in the aerospace industry as a software developer, Eric Jerome Dickey's artistic talents surfaced, inspiring him to become an actor and a stand-up comedian. Yet Eric quickly found out that writing was something he could do and do well. From creative writing classes to avidly consuming the works of his favorite authors, Eric Jerome Dickey began to shape a writing career of his own. Having written several scripts for his personal comedy act, he started writing poetry and short stories. "The film work gave me insight into character development, the acting classes helped me understand motivation...All of it goes hand in hand," Eric explains. He joined the IBWA (International Black Writers and Artists), participated in their development workshops, and became a recipient of the IBWA SEED Scholarship to attend UCLA's Creative Writing classes. In 1994 his first published short story, "Thirteen," appeared in the IBWA's River Crossing: Voices of the Diaspora-An Anthology of the International Black Experience. A second short story, "Days Gone By," was published in the magazine A Place to Enter.
With those successes behind him, Eric Jerome Dickey decided to fine-tune some of his earlier work and developed a screenplay called "Cappuccino." "Cappuccino" was directed and produced by Craig Ross, Jr. and appeared in coffee houses around the Los Angeles area. In February 1998, "Cappuccino" made its local debut during the Pan African Film Festival at the Magic Johnson Theater in Los Angeles.
Short stories, though, didn't seem to fulfill Eric Jerome Dickey's creative yearnings. Eric says, "I'd set out to do a ten-page story and it would go on for three hundred pages." So Eric kept writing and reading and sending out query letters for his novels for almost three years until he finally got an agent. "Then a door opened," Eric says. "And I put my foot in before they could close it." And that door has remained opened, as Eric Jerome Dickey's novels have placed him on the map as one of the best writers of contemporary urban fiction.
Eric Jerome Dickey's book signing tours for Sister, Sister; Friends and Lovers; Milk in My Coffee; Cheaters; and Liar's Game took him from coast to coast and helped propel each of these novels to #1 on the "Blackboard Bestsellers List." Cheaters was named "Blackboard Book of the Year" in 2000. In June 2000, Eric Jerome Dickey celebrated the French publication of Milk in My Coffee (Cafe Noisette) by embarking on a book tour to Paris. Soon after, Milk in My Coffee became a bestseller in France. Eric Jerome Dickey's novels, Chasing Destiny, Liar's Game, Between Lovers, Thieves' Paradise, The Other Woman, Drive Me Crazy, Genevieve, Naughty or Nice, Sleeping with Strangers, Waking with Enemies, and Pleasure have all earned him the success of a spot on The New York Times bestseller list. Liar's Game, Thieves' Paradise, The Other Woman, and Genevieve have also given Dickey the added distinction of being nominated for an NAACP Image Award in the category of Outstanding Literary Work in 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005. In 2006, he was honored with the awards for Best Contemporary Fiction and Author of the Year (Male) at the 2006 African American Literary Award Show. In 2008, Eric was nominated for Storyteller of the Year at the 1st annual ESSENCE Literary Awards. In January 2001, Eric Jerome Dickey was a contributor to New American Library's anthology Got To Be Real: Four Original Love Stories, also a Blackboard Bestseller. He also had a story entitled “Fish Sanwich” appear in the anthology Mothers and Sons. In June 2002, Dickey contributed to Black Silk: A Collection of African American Erotica (Warner Books) as well as to Riots Beneath the Baobab (published by Inte
Jesus! How do you move on from something so invigorating? Mr. Dickey has a way with words that I have yet to understand. The feels I got reading this, I can't explain.
*Update* This has got to be the best book that Mr. Dickey has written. I’ve not read all of his books, but I’m damn close and I just don’t think that another book can compare. He has a way with words that I can’t explain. The man knows his way around the worlds of sex, suspense, mystery, adventure, and a slew of other genres. Even after finishing this book almost 36 hours ago, I’m still thinking about the guy from Orange County.
This book is based around one night; hence the title. It involves con games at the gas pump, a Denny’s, a movie theater, a 7- Eleven, an upscale hotel room, assault, attempted murder, and the most erotic-ovary bursting-pantie changing- sex scene that I’ve ever had the pleasure (no pun intended) of reading. And let’s not forget the mystery behind the characters, mostly Mr. Orange County. From the very first page I was hooked. Unfaithful-jealous-wives of the world have nothing on the one in this book. I’d like to say the bitch is a boss but that would be putting it lightly. I despise hypocrites of all fashions. If you can’t take the heat, stay the hell out the kitchen.
Guy from Orange County meets girl from L.A. She tries to sell him a Macbook and the rest is history. To say more would give the whole story away. So much can happen within twelve hours. The characters in this book both have their own demons to deal with, but for one night they set fire to the rain. The chemistry between them is undeniable. You will want some LSD after reading this book. No, not the drug! And when it ends, you will be singing along to Jay and Queen B’s On The Run, because let’s face it; “Who wants that perfect love story anyway?”
If you are not a Dickey Nut, then you need to be. I highly recommend, not only this book, but his other works as well. He’s an incredibly talented man and you will not be disappointed when he takes you on a wild ride.
This book is terrible. I love EJD's work. I have been reading his books for over ten years. He's one of the few authors that I will support through book purchases without reading a synopsis of the work. I was disappointed in this title and the author.
I understand that this is meant to be a book heavy on dialogue and light on actual action, but the story makes little sense. A man meets a woman not by happenstance, but because she's trying to con him. They start talking and don't stop until after 6a the next day. That's pretty much the plot.
EJD's characters sound like they belong on a Shonda Rhimes' television show. They are described as attractive, educated and they speak extremely fast. Only in EJD’s case the characters are tossed into circumstances that make little to no sense. Even at the end of the story, when the entire plot is revealed, I was left unimpressed.
I'm going to do something that I rarely do in book reviews and delve into the plot a bit. As stated, this begins with Jackie, who is donned in a blonde wig, ill fitting stolen Best Buy uniform and is trying to con this unnamed male character into buying a Mac book, which is really a bunch of rocks in a box.
He catches her, some unpleasant words are exchanged and the stranger ends up giving her two grand in cash for no good reason. She takes his card, goes to a local Denny's restaurant, and calls him to join her. Before he arrives, she transforms into a beautiful sisterloc wearing African queen-yes, I'm being sarcastic, but that's what happens. They meet and talk and talk and talk...They throw around big words that this reader had to look up, a few history lessons and some reality television tidbits.
They talk some more and through another chance encounter, Jackie learns that her ex hubby, the one responsible for their child's death, is marrying someone else. She talks to the stranger some more and they get kicked out of the movie Annie, which is a children's movie, but seems to be filled with adults on this particular night. They talk, stop a robbery, buy condoms and continue talking.
They talk some more, acknowledge the growing attraction between them, talk some more, check into a luxury hotel, talk a lot more and have sex, while still talking.
I must add that as with most EJD characters, they have mind blowing sex on the first try. In fact it is so good and loud that other people at the hotel complain and security comes up. Jackie goes off on the guard. Somewhere between all of the talking, Jackie going off on people and the mind blowing sex they fall in love, but they have a fight that results in Jackie posting hotel pics of herself on her social media accounts and naked with the exception of purple timbs in the hallway of the hotel.
None of this is making any sense, right? Describing this as terrible writing is really kind. The writing, the plot, the characters are all nonsensical. Both main characters have a past and darkness that leads them to the choices made over the course of the story, but their pasts or even current circumstances don't justify their piss poor decision making.
The story actually ends with the main characters sharing multiple slices of cheesecake, while the unnamed man's wife is in the trunk of her Christmas present. This is after she tries to kill Jackie. Oh, and after the man gives Jackie $400,000 just because.
Maybe I'm just getting old or perhaps my reading choices are maturing, but this was flat out ridiculous. I wonder if EJD is in a place in his career where he feels as if he can give his readers anything and they'll just accept it because there is a miniscule of intrigue and overload of mind blowing sex.
I don't know, but what I am clear on is his readers deserve better and as a talented writer, EJD should want better for his readers, himself and his product. I would prefer to not give this book any stars, but I'm not sure if that's an option. Regardless, this book is definitely not recommended
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I barely finished this book. The characters were tedious to deal with, the dialogue was unrealistic, and that reveal was completely lackluster. I couldn't relate or become interested in either character. The woman was so annoying, I couldn't deal with her. I was hoping that the chapters would alternate POVs but it stayed in her obnoxious voice over. The relationship with the male lead character was not believable at all. It wasn't even ridiculous but adorable like typical romance novels are. It was just bad, so bad. And what was up with that ending? That's why this guy is running all over town tense and edgy? It didn't feel like enough. The story ends abruptly in the worse way. I really wanted to like this book but I just couldn't.
It's been a while since I've slipped back into EJD's universe. I started reading his books in high school. Now, as a woman in my thirties, I've grown and evolved; unfortunately, the same cannot be said for EJD's latest work.
What starts off as a fascinating premise (two strangers + one night = anything can happen) quickly grew stale and boring.
As a black woman who has living in and around Washington, DC my entire life, I am no stranger to issues with race, but the two main characters just seemed to take it too far. The sex didn't bother me at all; their dialogue did. It was like he was trying extra hard to prove...what I don't know. It had absolutely no point.
Time and time again his inner racist blatantly comes across, intermixed with ridiculously unnecessary SAT vocabulary (so we can't exactly call the characters stupid) but they most certainly are the most close-minded, arrogant, self-righteous, ignorant people I have ever come across in a novel--and that includes Daisy Buchanan from "The Great Gatsby".
Maybe EJD needs to get the hell out of LA and move to a chiller city. I hear Houston's nice. Miami is divine. DC is heaven. Drop the ridiculous vocabulary. Start writing about characters that the reader can actually like and root for. I hated both of the characters and wished ill will upon both of them--not because of their lying/cheating and infidelity, but because of their simple-mindedness.
It's going to be long while before I consider picking up another one of his books.
Eric Jerome Dickey is stuck in a rut to me. This book was no different than pleasure. The writing was choppy and the love scenes seemed forced. A man has a cheating wife who tracks all of his credit card purchases. Go figure. One night stand that drags on forever. I am done. Need a new author.
One Night reminds me why I love EJD. I love his style of writing, I love his attention to detail, and I love how he brings his characters to life. I just love him and I loved One Night! This book was good and so interesting. I honestly did not want it to end. I thought One Night was a re-read for me but, as I got further into the book, I realized I actually hadn’t read it. This story takes you on a fabulous journey over a span of 12 hours. Who would’ve thought 12 hours could be that adventurous?!!! Jackie and The Man from OC meet under interesting circumstances. She tries to con him so, the dislike between the two is pretty instant. But, both of them are battling some inner demons so, while they dislike each other, they’re also very drawn to one another. Jackie and The Man from OC go from disliking each other, to mild interest in one another, to sexually attracted to one another, to sexing each other down in a hotel room for hours, then back to disliking each other, and finally falling in love with one another. Whew chile! I couldn't keep up with their emotional rollercoaster! Keep in mind, all of this happened in a span of 12 loooooong hours. Then, you also have a mystery plot that’s brewing on the side. What I found really interesting was, we never found out The Man from OC’s real identity. Jackie knew his name but, we never knew his name. I wonder why that is? Any who, One Night was awesome! It’s just the kind of book you expect from EJD.
I hated this book. In the beginning I enjoyed the conversation, then it was like okay when are they going to have sex. The whole book was just too unrealistic. The sex was boring and I kept hoping it would end but it just went on and on. I only finished the book because I didn't want to feel like I wasted time reading a book that would not be added to my book challenge for the year (yeah Im a nerd) but Anyway this book was just about 2 strangers talking and having sex BORING. Everything else that happened just seemed too unrealistic so I could not get into it
It really started out good, but it was downhill from there. First, it was 100 pages too long. Second, the sex was too long. I love reading about sex as much as the next girl, but I really wanted it to end. Third, I hated the ending or lack there of.
Witty, fun, intelligent, layered, simple yet complex, “One Night” follows the course of two strangers as their lives intersect one night. A night that will change their lives forever.
This man, this man, this man! I’ve read practically everything Eric Jerome Dickey has written and he still blows me away. He never fails to awaken the intrigue in readers seemingly effortlessly. Every word matters. As I’ve said in a previous review, he taps into readers’ five senses. There are a lot of themes addressed between these two characters within the span of one night including second chances, marital conflicts, loss, guilt, social issues, and forgiveness. You enter the world he has created fully. You get to know the characters and their distinct personalities and flaws. Their problems, their issues, their pain, their joys become yours. Dickey allows his characters room for growth and readers get to see that. Full of vivid descriptions and details, Eric Jerome Dickey does not disappoint with “One Night.” I hope he revisits these characters again in the future. The only drawback I have with this novel is the slow start.
Way too much sex. I liked the book at the very beginning, but about halfway through when the two main characters began their affair EJD lost me, and I almost stopped reading. I'm so glad that I didn't give up on this book. I've read many books by EJD so I know that he writes heavy sex scenes, but this book just seemed to have too much. The sex part went on for hours it seemed, and I'd much rather read more on the plot.
Jackie meets a guy from Orange County(I forgot his name because it was hardly mention. She simply called him Orange County) that she tries to con by selling him a "Macbook Pro". They end up having a very hot night of sex. She knows he's married. He knows she has a boyfriend. Neither of them are happy in their relationships, and both are basically being used. Well things are definitely not what they seem. The ending is very shocking and is delivered in the way that only EJD can deliver a story. I would have rated this book 5 stars had it not been for the drawn out sex scene.
@EricJDickey When I purchased and started the book I did not know what I was in for. I did not read the synopsis, didn't know if it was romance (ha), contemporary or gangsta and I was lucky enough to not run into any pseudo reviewer who'll spoil it for me BUT EJD got big friends who were raving about the release (although I'm sure they didn't read it yet), hell of a street team and platform FB provides.
So this is what I'll say, brilliant writing, original story line and I was so proud of myself for remaining calm and enjoying the ride although I did want this particular couple to commit suicide at one point. As a self-proclaimed smartazz this book made me proud to be one. Its not a book you'll be able to predict the ending, I got more to say but this book got me thinking. I'll come back to finish and cleanup this review. But first two things: The best book I read this year and S.E.X. lots of it. There's nothing like reading about sex and thinking at the same time.
Let me start out by saying that I am a huge EJD fan!!! I am in awe of his writing talent. Each and every book I read of his raises my level of obsession. One Night was no different. I loved this book. It was something kind of different for him, I'm the way that it basically took place between only two people the entire story. I really liked that. And what I liked even more was the fact that all of this happened in one day/one night. The chemistry these two people had was amazing. They didn't know one another and yet, in one night they formed a sort of relationship. This book was intense and suspenseful. It definitely kept me tuned in wondering what was going to happen next. Some of the bombs dropped in the book had me going back to re read again, wondering if I read it right the first time. And the passion...WOW!!! Nobody can pen a sex scene like EJD!! They are so intense and just pure liquid fire! For me One Night was another home run. I hope there's a part 2!
I will definitely be rereading this one.. Really didn’t want to put it down. When you realize that the story is just 24 hours and what happened I…. That 24 hours is like Whoa! I mean they had a DAY… Also be aware that the book is spicy you know NSFW…
I cannot believe I am writing this. This is so not my favorite author. I think he might have let too much of the Fifty Shades obsession gGidet in his mind. My response for all those sad Fifty Shades readers was to pick up any Eric Jerome Dickey book for some really great reading that includes an awesome story line with hot sex. So disappointed with this. Please bring on the next in the Gideon series please...............
I loved this book. It is probably the best book I have read so far this year. I felt the pain of the two main characters. I mean like I really felt it. These characters will stay with me for a long time.
There’s just something about reading an EJD novel that engages every one of your senses and leaves you wanting more. Having been a long time reader (aka Dickey Nuts fan), I was not disappointed. Although this book had very few characters, the action, interaction and drama was just as filling.
One Night puts two unlikely characters in an unlikely situation and the outcome was very explosive. While I thought some of the scenes went on for what seemed like forever, there was no doubt the chemistry between the two main characters sizzled.
Some readers may not like that certain things were not revealed like the name of the “man from Orange County,” but I didn’t have a problem with that. I enjoyed that he was a very complex, sophisticated and educated kind of man. One who went off kilter when pushed to the limit. For the female character (“Jacqueline”) I loved her sassiness and her resourcefulness. She was a woman of many skills and talents and she used them all to simply survive.
I also thoroughly enjoyed that through these characters, EJD explored a lot of issues that married and single folks face on the daily: infidelity, struggling to survive, getting over betrayal, mourning the loss of loved ones, etc. There were times when I had to reach for my dictionary (well toggled over to www.dictionary.com) but what would an EJD novel be without stretching our vocabulary. To me this is sexy as hell - reading for entertainment while stimulating the mind! Loved it!
The ending was left to one’s imagination and trust me when I say I could take this story in so many different directions. Nothing in life is ever wrapped up tightly so for those readers who had a problem with the ending, well I’d say to each his own. The dialogue was great, the sex scenes made me turn on my A/C and so for sure, I can definitely see a sequel in the near future. Thump. Thump. Thump.
Until the next Dickey adventure...I shall remain a "Dickey Nuts" fan!
Some of my favorite lines:
“You’re a pretty woman.” “I’m almost as pretty as that silver wedding ring on your left hand.” “You’re wearing a pretty nice ring as well.” “On my right hand.” “Why is it on your right hand?” “Because it won’t fit on the middle finger of my left hand.” “But that is a wedding righty, right?” “Your ring is on your left hand. That means you bought the cow.” “Yours on the right hand means?” “It means I’m no one’s cow. So, where’s your cow? Where’s the woman you make go moo?”
I really cannot stand this female character. She is obnoxious, arrogant and exhibits the very thing traits men hate about "us". The story line is really good, but this character, I would hate to be around her. THAT MOUTH...UGH
Longtime Dickey fan here. Every author has some books that fall off the wagon, but if you are a fan for life, you know that there are way more good books by an author than there are bad so you stick with him, in this case, because his body of work shines loudly. So having said this, I absolutely loved this book! I have never read a plot line that happened over a time period in hours. It was simply cool and amazing that Dickey was able to keep two characters in full development until the very end and then of course leave the end hanging in hopes that there will be more to learn about them in future books (or at least I hope so). Yes, Dickey writes sexually raw sex scenes. If you don't like that type of literature, don't frackin read it! It's that simple. Cuz it's not fair to bash his book as either a first-timer or even as a diehard fan because everyone has a bad day. The way this book was setup was genius. You have to give props where props are due and Dickey did it again with this one. So, if you like to read safe books with people doing the nasty in missionary only, this ain't for you. Ijs
I rated this book a 4 Star read. It was good. Very descriptive. This book was about the journey of two people who meet and get to know one another over a 24 hour period. Both people have been through so much over the years. I enjoyed reading about these characters. From the stories of their past you get to know them for the persons they've become, the people they used to be and the people they will be. I enjoyed the unraveling of their day's activities. There were some steamy scenes in this book. Glad I read Pleasure and Decadence before this book. I still don't recall the name of the male character, Maybe he wasn't given a name. LOL. I didn't want the book to end. I needed to know what really happened to the characters in the end. I do recommend.
Just finished this book. I have to say I didn't like it at all! I almost didn't want to write this review because EJD is one of my favorite authors and I love all of his books! Especially the Gideon series. This book however was not interesting to me. I didn't connect with the characters or their circumstances. I did not like the ending at all. It just seemed really pointless.
I guess I'm waiting for his next book! I hope it comes soon.
I absolutely love EJD. Unfortunately, this book did nothing for me. While the writing is characteristic of his other great novels in wording and taking the reader to so many places in one paragraph, I was still somehow disappointed. Far too many things happened in one night.....hence the name of the book.....yet still disappointed. This unfortunately was a waste of my money, which I've never said about an EJD work
The rating is actually 3.5. The book started off really slow and then it started to get interesting. The middle of the book with consists of the sex took way too long. The book should have started with the end and then maybe went back in time. Overall, a decent book but took way too long to get to the good stuff.
I won this novel from the FREE Giveaway here on Goodreads.com and I was finally able to finish it. It was an easy read and I really enjoyed it except the end and how it just left off. Hopefully, there will be a sequel.
2.5 A quick read. I haven't read other EJD, so I can make no comparisons. This struck me as similar to Fifty Shades of Gray (There was lots of sex and a convoluted plot.) but with better dialogue. Overall it was fun and that's what I needed right now.
Only my 3rd book by this author. I truly enjoyed this story. I listened to an audio book. The Reader was in character. The masks come off it gets personal then intimate without ever knowing ones name.
