In a land where powers flow through one’s veins as naturally as water down a mountain stream, Micah is an aberration detested by everyone—everyone except Alekka, a gifted but solitary mage who understands the price of isolation. Her sensitivity to the thoughts of others drives her to seek solace in the forests surrounding Aclay, a small village that has been living under a malevolent shadow for hundreds of years.
As fear and loss ravage the countryside, the two outcasts form an unlikely bond forged in loneliness and surrounded by the flickering silhouettes of destiny. When their home is destroyed, the outcasts must join a volatile group of their peers on a journey that threatens to strip them of everything they cherish, imperil everything they’ve ever known, even force them to question the nature of reality itself. Can they find the key to stemming the tide of darkness without losing themselves along the way?
K. Ferrin spends her days surrounded by engineers, technology, and humming machinery, but her evenings are steeped in magic, myth, and adventure. She writes fantasy, loves gardening, and eats way too much pie. She lives at the foot of the Colorado Rockies with her husband and two pooches.
Her novels include the stand alone YA fantasy novel Magicless, as well as Across the Darkling Sea, and A Dying Land, the first two books of a series. You can find her online at www.kferrin.com.
I won this book through a Goodreads first reads giveaway. For some reason I keep winning all the YA books. I guess someone knows I'm young at heart though the same cannot be said for my body. Sigh. Even though this was categorized as YA, I found the writing to be mature and well formulated. The story, unique unto itself, had a Robert Jordan Wheel of Time feel to it, but in a much abbreviated format. I loved the concept of the two sides of magic balancing and complementing each other. My heart broke when that same balance unwillingly divided one of the young couples. I'm trying not to give too much away so my prose may be a bit stilted. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the refreshing twist on the abused evil vs good theme. I thought that I read that this was to be the first in a trilogy. The good news is... yay, I'm looking forward to the next book. The bad news is, I'm concerned about how the next book will pick up as this story didn't leave any loose threads or teasers. It seems complete as is. I will leave that up to the author to sort out and will impatiently wait for her solution.
What a perfect mix of romance, betrayal, mystery, adventure, magic, action, and suspense. Loved it!
I'll give stars to originality, plot, story, characters and their development, and how much this book got me hooked! Just loved it! :) I wish there was more though :( i miss it already :P
I won this book from goodreads. I enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed and interesting. My attention was kept though the entire book. I am putting this author on my list of authors I want to keep up with.
This book threw the reader into a story of romance, action, destiny and betrayal. Everything in this book flowed together and the twists always were a surprise. The creative names and creatures hardly seen in other stories came to life in Magicless, each with their own secrets and problems hidden deep inside. There was always an obstacle to overcome, a destination to make. The characters displayed real life emotions and decisions throughout the book. I consider this a clean read with hardly any inappropriate actions or words, and I just can't wait for the next book!!
I had the privilege of working with the author on this book during the editorial stage, and I am so proud to have been a part of its journey. Magicless has it all: action, magic, romance, pathos, humor, satisfying character arcs...I could go on, but you get the picture ;)
I know I'm obviously a biased reviewer, here, but I stand behind those five stars wholeheartedly. I hope readers enjoy getting to know Micah and Alekka and their crew as much as I did while editing this book.
Engaging, interesting, engrossing and enjoyable. I felt most of the characters were well written and it was easy to get attached to them. The story catches you and won't let you put the book down. I am only giving four stars because as much as I loved the main characters and the story, I felt like the ending was too easy without an explanation as to why (intentionally vague as to not give anything away). Despite this, you will love this and I highly recommend you pick it up.
I am not particularly a fan of young adult fiction, but this was an enjoyable read that was paced well and gave me really defined characters. I really liked that the romance was there, but not overdone and the relationships with the characters evolved naturally. This would be a story that I would recommend to fellow fantasy readers most definitely! I can't wait to read the next installment!
In the village of Aclay where everyone has magical powers except Micah—aka Magicless—no one can stop the sporadic pillaging attributed to Amentis, the Dark Wizard. The author takes the reader on a plausible journey to Noz Noctis with six well-defined characters whose purpose is to restore balance in the world at the peril of risking their own lives.
Along the way, each will come to terms with the notion that evil wears many faces, and things aren’t always what they seem. This maxim unlocks the secret to Micah’s own magic of “undoing things”.
At odds with each other, the trials and tribulations along the journey forge a bond of friendship, while fostering mutual respect for one another. Prior to confronting the Dark Wizard in his tower, Micah’s introspection sums up the reality for any collaborative effort of massive undertaking - “He felt something shimmer in the air around him—pass through them and out into the world. Something had shifted, and he felt the world was better for it.”
Well-written and thought provoking, I felt all the better for having journeyed with a cast of characters in danger of losing themselves stemming the tide of darkness.
OK book for a snowy afternoon. Sort of middle of the road interesting. A group of young people go on a quest, some ups and downs but nothing big . The book was well edited and easy to read. Not a lot of action, much marching.
Magicless ... says it all. What a immature book about babbling none sense. This really gives some insight on egotistical narcissism of the author. I won this book at a give away and now I know why they gave it away. Don't bother with this utter senseless magicless nonesense.
Magicless, by author K. Ferrin, is an intriguing look at a journey by seven members of a village. Their goal is to stop a Dark Wizard who's been kidnapping women and babies for centuries. Each has his or her own reason for making the trek, and that helps to sharply differentiate these multi-faceted characters.
The plot is built around two themes: Exclude those who are different from you at your peril; and, there's boundless strength in friendship and teamwork.
The writing was clear and sharp, the editing excellent. The pace was just right, providing enough description to draw a vivid picture of the varied locations of the group's travels without bogging down the story. There was perhaps a bit too much tea drinking, but mostly the pages flew by, especially as the book drew to a close.
If you're looking for a sword-and-sorcery fantasy that isn't overwhelmed in romantic glop, you'll enjoy Magicless. I look forward to reading more by this author.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received Magicless as a Goodreads winner. Thank you to K. Ferrin for this very enjoyable First Edition book.
The characters are well developed and the magic, the fantasy, feels electric and alive. I enjoyed the story line from the beginning.
The binding makes for comfortable reading with the paper stock and cover complimenting well.
