A seemingly simple story with hidden layers. The author has written an interesting historical novella with themes reflected in dual characters. Jealousy and bitterness overtake heart and mind, and a sense of duty outweighs hopes and desires.

I really liked the nice analogy comparing an embroidered garden scene with our lives. We see our lives from underneath, messy just like the underside of an embroidery piece. But God sees all from above and works out a specific plan for us. I found that encouraging and will try to remember that thought when life doesn't seem to be going right.

An enjoyable start to the series, compelling despite the short length. I'm eager to see how and where each character ends up.

A Heart's Disguise is a novella about Sara Montgomery, a young lady who is heartbroken over the death of her betrothed in the Civil War. A rival suitor Ben, knowing the entire time that Rand is alive and actively thwarting his attempts to communicate with Sara, tricks her into agreeing to marry him.

The book was just okay for me- not a bad way to pass an hour. The plot, however, was completely predictable, and I found the characters one-dimensional. This novella is part of a series, but I doubt I'll read any more.

I think the book blurb actually sums this up for this novella, but I will add, the ending surprised me... just when you think you know how the story is going to go.... the proverbial mic gets dropped and you're left with your mouth open.

Enjoyable read. Recommended.

This was not at all on my TBR pile, but I had about a half hour to kill in LifeWay today, so picked up something I knew that I could finish in that time. Well, maybe it was kind of on my TBR list, as I'd never read Colleen Coble before and was interested in doing so. Now, there was a slight bummer, because this book, though it can be read in a short amount of time, kind of ends on a cliff-hanger. At least, for some, it may. It wasn't too huge for me. :) I can see myself picking up the next books in this series in the future, but for now, book one was fine.

Anyway, my thoughts on the book... it was short and to the point. I now see why most readers prefer novels than novellas, as there just seemed like so much more could be developed. But honestly, for a short read, it answered all my questions, wasn't too complex, but was gripping and interesting.

The romance in this wasn't too extreme. Yes, characters loved each other (or disliked), but it didn't have the whole mushy, gushy feel. Probably because of the content and questions in the story, but I can't give that without giving the story away. ;) (and I will put the disclaimer that I kind of skimmed some parts as I was slightly rushed toward the end)

This didn't seem very strongly Christian to me. I know that it was such a short story, but still... The pastor mentioned his concerns and asked the MC if she prayed about something, but that was about it. The actual main characters didn't seem to have a personal relationship with the Lord (as in, they didn't really go to Him for help or seek Him...it was as if they were church-goers only). That was slightly disappointing.

So overall, it was a good, short read, and I will be interested in trying Colleen Coble again.

A Heart’s Disguise is the first book in a six book serialized novel set. When I set out to read a novella or a serialized novel, I make sure to set up my expectations accordingly. I know that in a serialized novel, there will usually be a bit of a cliffhanger ending, or at the very least, an ending that will leave me wanting more of the story. That is true in this book. I am definitely looking forward to the next installment, A Heart’s Obsession.

Another thing I hope for in a shorter novella or serial novel is a book that has main characters who are still emotionally well-developed. I want to form some sort of bond with them, even if it is in a shorter span of time. A Heart’s Disguise also fulfilled that request as well. I felt intense sadness for the loss that Sara Montgomery has faced and the bad decision she finds herself making. I feel intense dislike for Ben Croftner and a hope that his schemes do not prevail. My heart also goes out to Rand Campbell. I feel for him because of all that he has gone through.

I really enjoyed this first book of Colleen Coble’s serialized novel series entitled Journey of the Heart and I am looking forward to reading the other five stories.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, through Litfuse Publicity, in exchange for an honest review.

The first in Coble’s six-novella series lays the groundwork for an interesting tale. The tension is high and, fortunately, readers don’t have to wait long before the next installment to discover what happens. The characters are well defined and their motivations are clearly detailed.
Sarah Montgomery was engaged to Rand Campbell, and was told he was killed fighting in the Civil War. Her father is ill and her brother encourages Sarah to move on with Ben Croftner, a landowner who can help their family. When Sarah discovers that Rand is not dead after all, and that Ben knew about it, she must decide what is best for herself and her family — although she might not get to make the choice. It was okay. Short and not very in depth, but a good introduction to a series. The continuity of the dates is kind of aggravating though. The book starts in October 1865, but a sneak peek at the end of the book to the next book starts in September 1865, but it is not a prequel. Slightly confused how no one caught that before it was printed. Probably silly, but overlooking details irks me.

A very nice start to the series. A Heart's Disguise is the first of a series of 6 books that were originally published as two novels in Colleen Coble's Wyoming series. I like that these books are novella size, about 100 pages, which is just perfect for busy days when you want to fit in a quick read.

In this story, we're introduced to Sarah Montgomery and her family, which includes her dying father. He and her brother have encouraged her to marry before her father dies to ease his worry about her future care. Since her mother died many years ago in childbirth, the men think this is the perfect solution and have a man all picked out for her (ugh, right ladies?), but her heart is still in love with Rand Campbell, the union soldier who never returned from the war.

Despite the men trying to plan Sarah's life for her, their hearts are in the right place. This book is set in the late 1860's and women were very dependent on their father's and husbands during this era. The writing is accurate historically, but it will be interesting to see what decision Sarah makes. Things aren't so bad that they would force her into a marriage she doesn't want. However, she does have a strong sense of duty to her father and wants to ease his worry. You'll have to read the book to see how things work out.

There were a few times when I became frustrated with the main couple's behavior.

Regardless of a couple of personal preference hiccups, the book is very well written. I've always enjoyed Ms. Coble's stories and look forward to finishing the series!

This was ok. It's the first serialization novella in a series of six. I listened to the audio book, which was a treat since I haven't had much reading time. This simply sets you up for the rest of the series. I only gave it two stars, though, because I honestly can't say I enjoyed the characters. It seems unfair rating a novella/ story that isn't finished. It's not bad, it just wasn't something that grabbed me.

Sarah lives in Wabash after the Civil War. All the town believes her true love was killed in the war and she nearly marries the wrong man. Much havoc ensues when the right man comes back just in time. I liked that this is a short story to be continued. Easy to read with a short burst of time. I love all of Colleen Coble's stories.

This was a very good book. When I picked it up I was just going to read a chapter a day before work. Well I ended up reading it in one day because I could not put it down. I really like Sara but Ben not so much. I am hoping things work out for her in the next book, which I will be reading shortly.

This is a early book that’s is back in print from this author. It definitely seems like early work. It was only 90 pages and has 5 more short books in the series. It takes place after the civil war and this book centered on two people who were engaged before the war started.

Interesting novella. The first of a 6 part series set just after the Civil war ends, this book is a good opener for the series. I enjoyed the characters and can’t wait to see whaaat happens next.

2.5 stars - sweet little Christian romance novel set after the Civil War. It’s very short, and the first in a series. Because of its length, the entire book took place in the span of a week - which meant background was limited and depth was lacking. The characters and story weren’t intriguing enough or lovable enough to draw me in to the point of continuing the season. Considering the fact that I enjoy Colleen’s other books, I was surprised by how unengaged I felt for this. The only character I thought was well written was the villain - but even then, his contribution was short and anticlimactic.

A sweet little read if you like novellas, but it wasn’t for me.

This isn't my typical type of book but I read it for book club. It was fast paced and I really didn't like how Rand treated his girlfriend. She didn't realize that he was alive and would of never gotten engaged if she knew. I think Rand should ease up. But it was a fast read. The leaving you hanging at the end kind of sucked though.

This book is short and sweet, left open ended in order to continue the series. The fact that its so short and there are many different narrators makes it hard to form any significant emotion for or bond to these characters.

Colleen Coble in her new book “A Heart’s Disguise” Book One in the Journey Of The Heart series published by Thomas Nelson takes us into the life of Sara Montgomery.

From the back cover: In the celebratory mood of the recently-ended Civil War, Sarah discovers her betrothed has been keeping a devastating secret.

While the tiny town of Wabash, Indiana, celebrates the end of the fighting, Sara Montgomery attends the parties, but inside she’s fighting a deep sadness. The love of Sara’s life, Rand Campbell, didn’t come back from the front.

So her brother and ailing father persuade her to pledge herself to another man—despite her misgivings. When Sarah finds out that Rand is in fact alive—and that her fiancé Ben Croftner knew it—she indignantly breaks off their engagement.

Croftner doesn’t take rejection lightly—and a single woman with a sick father makes an easy target. He abducts Sarah, his intentions anything but honorable. Then Rand comes to her aid . . . only to reveal that he has been posted at Fort Laramie, Wyoming, and asks her to go with him as his wife.

Will Sarah leave her dying father’s side for the only man she’s ever loved? And what plans are forming in the jealous heart of Ben Croftner?

When Arthur Conan Doyle wrote his Sherlock Holmes stories they ran in The Strand Magazine. And when he wrote the full length novels they had to be serialized to run which meant that “The Hound Of The Baskervilles” took a full year. The good news is that, while the Journey Of The Heart is also being serialized, it will not take that long”as the whole series is only six parts. “A Heart’s Disguise” is a great way to begin. The Civil War is over however Rand, The love of Sarah’s life, did not come back. So she is going to marry Ben. There is a whole lot going on in the ninety pages of story that you are going to want to read for yourself. Ms. Coble knows how to write characters that come alive off the page. This is a fast-paced read that will keep you guessing as to what is really going on. I recommend this book highly!

Title: A HEART’S DISGUISE
Author: Colleen Coble
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
March 2015
ISBN: 978-0529103413
Genre: historical romance

In the celebratory mood of the recently-ended Civil War, Sarah discovers her betrothed has been keeping a devastating secret.

Will Sarah leave her dying father’s side for the only man she’s ever loved? And what plans are forming in the jealous heart of Ben Croftner?

My thoughts: A HEART’S DISGUISE was previously published with Heartsong Presents/Barbour and Thomas Nelson picked it up and serialized it. I’m not a huge fan of serials and didn’t realize that this was the first part of a serial when I agreed to review this collection.

I like that A HEART’S DISGUISE doesn’t begin with a death, but it still has the somber dying/depressed tone to it at the beginning, despite the barn dance. Rand and Sarah have a lot of misunderstandings between them—a new published authors standby to increase tensions. This is (as I mentioned before) Ms. Coble’s first published book republished to introduce new readers to her books.

This book was okay, but most definitely not Ms. Coble’s best. It is amateur compared to her more recent books. But if you like historical romances, and if you like serials, you will probably love A HEART’S DISGUISE.

This was my first go around with a novella book. I was browsing my libraries options and saw A Heart’s Disguise and thought why not? After all the story takes place shortly after the civil war and I’ve always enjoyed a good historical fiction novel.

The story itself is about a young woman named Sarah who is pretty much cornered into marrying a man named Ben after her previous fiancé, Rand, was pronounced dead after the civil war. It’s made clear that Sarah doesn’t actually love Ben but, her father is sick and her youngest brother needs a home so, Sarah did the only logical thing for a woman in her time to do, she agrees to marry, even though her heart doesn’t agree. However it turns out Rand isn’t dead and is on his way back home and Ben knew about Rand being alive this whole time, in fact he’d been given a letter to reassure Sarah if Rand being alive but he decided to never tell her nor Rands family of his safety. Of course Rand comes back in time before Sarah and Ben are betrothed, Ben gets overly possessive and tries to kidnap Sarah into marrying him, Rand saves Sarah but still doesn’t fully trust her; after all she did agree to marry another man only 5 months after Rand was declared dead (yet Rand doesn’t clearly see she only did it cause she thought him to be dead and her brother needed a steady home *eye rolling*).

Overall, the story is to the point, there is little character development since the book is such a quick read but has potential as there are other books in this series, and it wasn’t overly mushy which is appreciated. For what the book is and how it does keep your interest I’d give it a 3 star rating and recommend for people looking for a quick day read (literally finished this book in 2 hours), historical fiction fans, and people who enjoy a good innocent romance.

Going into reading this book I knew that the ending would come fast and probably leave me hanging-it's only 96 pages. This is part one of six in the Journey of the Heart Collection so instead of everything being in one big book it's split up. I'm not sure why publishers decide to do this because from what I can see I think it's frustrates readers more than anything.

It's really difficult to rate this book because I felt like it was more of a prologue than a book itself. But I think four stars is a fair rating. Sarah is stuck in between the interests of two men and they both want to win her heart. Sarah irritated me a bit but I really love Rand's character and actions. He does the opposite of what I would expect in the end and that made this book collection promising.

It's a love story to start out with and I am curious to see where it leads.

This book is the first part in a three part series. I am enjoying this series but am wishing each book was longer or combining the three books into one longer book would have been better. I am going to have to wait one month for the next book and two months for part three. So far I am enjoying the characters but getting aggravated with them. I don't know why Sarah feels she has to make everyone happy. At the beginning she is willing to marry a man she does not love just to make her father happy? I got aggravated at Rand too. I felt he could have been a little more understanding with Sarah. I don't really like the way the book ends but I guess that will be resolved in the next book.

Colleen Coble is one of my absolute favorite authors. Her stories are always full of twists, turns, intrigue, romance, and the Lord. So I jumped at the chance to review her Journey of the Heart series. From the first page of this book, I was hooked. If you've read Where Leads The Heart, then this story will be familiar to you. That being said, I look forward to re-reading this fantastic story! Read my full review: http://faithlovebooks.blogspot.com/20...
