In his last week on Earth, Jesus knew the end was near. He knew the finality of Friday, but did he also know the victory of Sunday? Join bestselling author and pastor Max Lucado invites you to walk with Jesus in the week leading up to the crucifixion: feeling his passion, sensing his authority, and hearing his promise that death has no power. On Calvary's Hill paints a picture of Jesus in his final week: Jesus was commonly dressed but uncommonly focused. Leaving Jericho and walking toward Jerusalem, he doesn't chatter or pause. He's on his final journey. Even the angels are silent. They know this is no ordinary walk or week--hinged on this week is the door of eternity. With excerpts from Max's bestsellers, including 3:16 , He Chose the Nails , and Just Like Jesus , On Calvary's Hill will take you into Jesus' last week, from the road to Jerusalem to the resurrection. Each reading includes a timeless verse, an in-depth reading, and a thoughtful prayer designed to help you draw near to the Savior and prepare to celebrate the resurrection--the greatest miracle ever conceived. As we observe Jesus' last week, Max challenges us to face difficult questions, including: Let's follow Jesus on his final journey. By observing his, we may learn how to make ours.

As lent began this year, I was looking for a book to help me reflect on the depth of what Jesus did for us on the very first Easter. On Calvary's Hill was a perfect fit! With short, daily readings, this book provided me with a fresh perspective on Easter and often left me in tears after only a few pages. I'd highly recommend it!
On Calvary's Hill is made up of selections from eleven different Max Lucado books along with a Bible verse to go with each day's reading.
I enjoyed listening to each of these sections. It took me deeper into the Word of God and prepared me for Sunday church. Max Lucado has a way to "take you right there." I love it! It's great all year round not only during Easter.
I loved this book. It's contains 40 readings for the Easter Season. It goes through the final week of the Savior's life, from being betrayed, to being crucified and then resurrected. Each "reading" showed me a different way to use the Atonement in my life. I cried, often. It was the perfect thing to read at Easter.
This is my third time through this book for Lent and it's always so good! So many things that make you pause, reflect, and appreciate our Savior and what He did even more!
We are less than a month away from Easter, one of the most important holidays Christians celebrate, and I don't know of a better way to celebrate than to reflect on Jesus' last days on this earth.
That is exactly what you will be able to do when reading Max Lucado's On Calvary's Hill: 40 Readings for the Easter Season.*
Although a very quick read with chapters only a couple pages long, this book is not meant to be read in one sitting. Each chapter begins with a Bible verse and ends with a small prayer for you to declare to your Heavenly Father. I believe you will get a much better appreciation for the book if you use it for your daily devotional time with the Lord.
With Lucado's vivid and often poetic language, these forty mini-chapters, which are taken from other works by Lucado, are woven together seemlessly, guiding the reader through the last week of the Lord's life while here on Earth.
Although the Easter story is a familiar one, you will definitely feel more connected to this powerful passion "play" and to Jesus after reading through this book. If you are looking for a deeper revelation of Calvary and the Cross to strengthen your understanding of salvation, I recommend this book for this Easter season, and every season during your walk with the Lord!
This is a great Lenten devotional by Max Lucado. Each day’s reading is a perfect length with a scripture, a coinciding excerpt from one of his books, and a prayer. Each is Christ-centered and focuses on the days preceding and subsequent to the crucifixion and His resurrection. Each is thought-provoking and invites one into each scene, consider the events, and consider our own response.
This is definitely something I would want to use year after year! The print copy would make a good gift, also. I highly recommend it to those who travel the 40-day journey of Lent and appreciate the author’s writing style of grace, mercy, forgiveness, and ultimately, God’s great love for us.
This book was one of the best parts of my Lenten reading. Not only did it speak to me on its own, but it was a great help in getting a better understanding of readings for my Bible study class. We were almost to Palm Sunday readings in John when I started this book, so it lined up pretty well with what we did in class and really gave me a different perspective on several passages. Having read the passion story many, many times before, getting a new view was really worth it to me.
A true Max Lucado fan, I enjoy most of his books and his devotionals. They are not only insightful as mentioned by many, but they are accessible. Max writes for the everyday man and woman, and in On Calvary's Hill, he takes the last weeks of Jesus' life and presents it to where all of us - even those who are not so scholarly in Biblical wordings - can grasp it, get it and live it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook from Max Lucado with relevant readings leading up to the resurrection. Max is truly gifted in the art of storytelling and I appreciate how he weaves them into scripture. Lots of thoughts to ponder. I do wish the publisher would clearly state that parts of the book are taken from his previous books, as I’m collecting quite a lot of Max’s work and sometimes find that one is a retelling of a previous one, so that can be a bit daunting when it’s not listed when you buy it on Audible or Amazon. This particular title, I was able to listen to as part of my @storytelsverige subscription, so that’s awesome! Narration is perfect, even though it’s not the author himself, this narrator (frequent to Max’s work) really captures the spirit of the writing and Max’s storytelling prowess.
On Calvary's Hill is a concise and thought provoking look at the last days of Christ, his crucifixion and his then resurrection. Written so that you read a passage a day for the forty days of Lent I chose to read it as I would a novel; I liked the continuity of reading it as such. Lucado just has the right way with words and a few questions sprinkled in for thought that almost says - see what He did for you - and that is precisely how Lucado ends passage 40. On Calvary's Hill was a good way to bring the Lenten season to me from a perspective that made me think and be grateful for my faith and how Jesus' life and crucifixion affects my life.
Max Lucado draws from several of his prior devotional works to provide 40 days of devotional study for the Lenten season. The compilation of short daily readings are vivid interpretations of the daily Bible verse brought to full relevance by probing thoughts for self-reflection. It causes reflection on both what Christ did for us and how we should react in our daily lives during Lent and beyond. The book was the excellent choice by our church for Lenten study this year.
A very quick but extremely historical look at the end of the life of Jesus. Things were written in a way that made the Last Days much easier to understand. While reading I could feel the nails in his hands and feet. I felt the tears building up in my eyes. Tom truly know that Jesus gave his life for me all these years later is amazing and very believable. Thank you Jesus for giving your life so that I might learn and love you and your Holy Father. God is good.
What a fabulous book to enjoy during Holy Week! I chose the audio version and listened to 5 readings a day from Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday. Each of the 40 readings is comprised of excellent excerpts from other books by Max Lucado, paired with meaningful devotions. I recommended it to others in my family this year who also found it to be a great addition to the Easter Season. In fact, I won't hesitate to return to this again next year and make it a new tradition. Truly a great book!
I always love Max Lucado books. As I read, I transform right into the location. I see the activity, I hear the voices. My heart gets full. The biggest thing for me, is that I learn so much. thru Mr Max, I have become a friend of Jesus!! I find myself filling my a kindle with books by Max Lucado.
Reading his books brings me peace and calms my soul. Mr Max tosses in some humor and real life experiences. I love Mr Max ! And I truly love Jesus ♥️
Good devotional based on various aspects of Christ’s time on earth for our sake
Thoroughly enjoyable and blessed read written by the master storyteller, with very vivid, imaginative, emotional stories and perspectives of various people related to Jesus’ time on earth. Read slowly, read ponderously, and be blessed!
The book was beautifully laid out to the day leading up to the crucifixion and then it took you to the hour by hour of the sacrifices that Christ made for us. Every detail was scriptural and carefully selected to make you feel as if you were right there. Max Lucado is a very talented and gifted writer.
This devotional is fantastic. Everyone hears the stories but the way each segment of those days is broken down and explained makes it so much more meaningful. Need to make sure I bought On Calvary Hill and didn't rent it because I know I will want it for Lent 2022. Thank you. May you have a Blessed Easter.
Wonderful book! My mother and I are 350 miles away from one another, so this year we went through the 40 days up to today Easter via FaceTime, and It has been so enlightening to read and go through each day of this well written account of what our savior Jesus Christ has done for us! He is Alive and he is returning for us his, church(bride)! Amen!!
What a great collection from Max Lucado's books. While reading this make sure that you have some tissues handy because it will bring years to you eyes. Hallelujah, what a Saviour.
I started reading this book 40 days before Easter! Several of my family and friends read this together! It was a wonderful way to to prepare your heart for Easter and all that it means to us.
During Lent 2020 and the darkness of the corona virus spreading over the world, the message of Christ’s sacrifice of Himself for us and the depth of His love could not be more timely.
After reading a few Max Lucado books, I feel he says a lot of things he doesn’t know. He takes liberties and interprets things into stories that aren’t in the Bible. I won’t be reading anymore by him and I hope those who do, do so with discernment.
Max Lucado has a knack for reading between the lines of scripture and helping us to personalize the stories. This set of devotional readings is moving, poignant, convicting, reminding us of the powerful work of our Savior.
