Living Again

Rate this book
Daniel Larson has walled himself off from any possibility of romance since his lover died violently five years ago in Afghanistan. The same bomb that ended his partner’s life took the lower part of Daniel’s left leg. The only support Daniel has, his Uncle Lawrence, is dead-set against anything homosexual, including Daniel.

Now, a popular language teacher at the local university, Daniel's suffering from a car accident that broke his one good leg. His uncle, who is much better at throwing money at things than offering emotional support, provides a rented power chair and a private in-home nurse. Unbeknownst to his uncle, the nurse comes in the form of a man named Jonah Thacker.

Instantly attracted, Daniel and Jonah fight their mutual feelings in favor of professionalism. They become friends anyway, and Jonah shares his life with Daniel, including his handicapped son, Ethan. As Jonah and Daniel grow closer, Daniel becomes more involved in Jonah and his son’s lives, even being there for Ethan when his medical conditions worsen. But when Daniel’s uncle finds out the nurse he's hired is male, he uses all of his resources to keep Jonah and Daniel apart.

Brynn Stein has always loved to write. Fan fiction, original fiction, whatever. While Brynn wrote in numerous genres—everything from mystery, to contemporary, to supernatural—she had always tended toward strong male characters. And then she discovered “slash,” male/male romance, and all those strong male characters were finally allowed to express their love for one another. It seems that there are always at least two characters clamoring to tell Brynn their story.

Brynn lives in Virginia with one of her two two-legged children, and two four-legged ones. Her supportive family encourages her writing and provides a sounding board for fledgling stories. When she isn’t writing, Brynn teaches children with special needs. In free time, when such a thing exists, she reads anything she can get her hands on, and haunts bookstores. She draws and paints, and enjoys the outdoors—especially if she can get to the beach—and is always thinking about her next story.

I really, really hate writing negative reviews for books where the author obviously meant no harm. But this book was terrible and did nothing but constantly play on my emotions for a sick child while two men had the same stupid argument over and over again about a commitment to one another. By the time the story ended, the poor horse was dead, completely dismembered and stinking up the joint.

One small saving grace for a book like this would have been some hot man-on-man sex to ease the doldrums, right? Yep, but don't look for that here. Yes, these men consummate their sexual relationship... By kissing and having the scene fade to black!!! The fuck!?

So, can't recommend this one. Not my speed at all and from what I know of my GR friends, not your speed either.

I read the blurb and did a fist pump because: wounded man, male nurse, comfort/healing, disabilities. What's not to love?

Apparently quite a bit.

It started off promising. Daniel wakes up in a hospital only to be told he broke his non-amputated leg in a car accident. His home nurse is one gorgeous man named Jonah, who has a disabled son (his adopted nephew) whom he's raising alone.

Daniel and Jonah get to know each other.

And they get to know each other.

And they get to know each other some more.

We are told they're lusting after one another, but you'd never know that. Forget the slow burn or sexual tension.

Then once the MCs realize they're into each other, there's a lot of back and forth. Both men are afraid of being hurt. Daniel lost the love of his life, and Jonah was burned by a short-term boyfriend and has Ethan to raise. They have the same damn conversation a dozen times.

So after the whole slow-as-molasses build-up when the guys finally do figure shit out, all we get is FADE TO BLACK. And you all know how I feel about that.

I thought Ethan was a darling boy, well portrayed, and there was some sweetness between the MCs, but I wanted angst that felt REAL, sexual tension galore, and some hot-as-hell sex to show that the guys are crazy about one another. Sorry to say I didn't get it.

Whoo! *wipes brow* I made it through, and I didn't have to throw my kindle at the wall after all. I have to say, the kid was the saving grace for the story. Ethan was only four years old, but he was definitely a charmer, and his character managed to breathe some life into an otherwise dull and predictable story.

It was too bad that there just wasn't any real sparks of attraction and sexual tension between the MC's. I just didn't believe they were truly attracted to each other beyond friendship.

Overall, while the story wasn't offensive in any way, it also wasn't memorable either.

In the beginning, I didn`t understand the negative reviews.
This story started quite nice and I liked the atmosphere, the way our m/c`s got to know each other and especially Ethan the 4-year-old handicapped son of Jonah.
The longer the story developed the more it was grating on my nerves, however.
How can it be, that 2 intelligent adults behave more childish than a 4-year-old kid?
And how is it possible that this back and forth of "I love you but I am not ready for more and I don`t know if you really love me and it works out for us..." went on and on and on for about 100 pages.
Only interrupted by Daniels completely crazy uncle, who tried to separate those two.
Probably it would have been okay once or twice, but it was like "Groundhog day", whenever you thought it was over, it started again!
I am really sorry because I definitely wanted to like it and it had some nice and sweet ideas, but at the end, the best thing I can say is, that I didn`t abandon it and the main characters were sweet, but that was not enough to earn this more than 2 stars...

Book and Audio:
Daniel was injured and lost a leg in the same accident that killed his partner of many years. He is still very depressed about this when he’s in another car accident that breaks his remaining good leg. He must have round the clock care while it heals so his well-meaning uncle hires a nurse to care for him. However… his uncle is a huge homophobe and freaks out when he learns the nurse is male. Between the uncle and his past, Daniel isn’t exactly available to start any new relationships.
Jonah is the male nurse assigned to Daniel. He has some baggage from a previous relationship and a child with health challenges as well. These prevent him from being immediately willing to begin a new relationship.
Most of the book is Jonah and Daniel dancing around their attraction to one another and debating their concerns. We also learn about Ethan, Jonah’s boy and his health challenges.
In the last 10% of the book the couple finally moves forward but is faced with even more hurdles in the form of the meddling uncle and Ethan’s health crisis.
At the end, we have a very sweet HEA.
**
I did not read this, I listened to it and so I’m not sure if my feelings would have been the same had I read the book. The narrator Randy Fuller was not new to me. I’d listened to his narration of A White Coat is my Closet and thought he did a good job with that. In this situation I can’t know for sure how much of this was his narration or just the story itself, but it was painfully slow.
Randy’s narrating voice felt like listening to a guided meditation. It was smooth and drawn out and low key and calm and… you get the idea. The story was also slow and quiet without any exciting spikes or moments of intense heat or emotion. Between the voice and the story itself it was very hard to continue to listen to this audiobook and stay awake.
I never felt any heat or spice. The romantic scenes, when we finally get the couple together, are fade to black. That in itself is not necessarily a bad thing, but in this case we spent hours getting the boys to admit they liked each other and then more time in getting them willing to try to be together and we get very little pay out in terms of them actually being together. Even some heated kisses or long and sappy conversations would have helped me bond with their relationship. It felt almost clinical in that when they do finally get together it’s just a very quiet “All he did was kiss Jonah back… and try to put all his love and all his desire for the future into that kiss.” After hours of anticipation, that is their climactic coming together.
So, though the writing/editing was fine and the narration sound quality was good, I cannot recommend this audiobook. If you want an “inspirational” story that has some romantic elements or a very non-sexual romance, then you might enjoy this, but for those of us who look at m/m with more for a taste for intense romance and possibly some intense sex, this was very unsatisfying.

Overall Impression:
1.5 stars – I wasn’t feeling it

If your child suffers from missing limbs, missing part of the lungs or a heart disease, you probably might not want to read about another child going into surgery. Stay away from this book.

I bought the book because narrator Randy Fuller is a good one.

And while his reading was - as always - perfect, the book just lacked ...and to be honest, it started okay, average, not really special but okay. Unfortunately it went downhill from there.

Let's just put the most important issues here:

Both MCs are so guarded and reluctant to commit to anything, it really hurt. For grown men, who should be able to honestly decide stuff from time to time...well, they were just kind of tooooo chickenhearted. Then - they never talked (at least I got the impression because obvously weeks were passing without any discussions about their issues) and then on the other hand, they talked without solutions, just another "you don't trust me" with tears-moment. I'm not sure, but it would be interesting how many shiny eyes had been mentioned in the book. So it got more and more of the same issues and the repetition got boring.

Then Ethan...yes, he was adorable. So, this going to be serious: As someone with a kid with a heart problem, I really would have appreciated if anywhere in the blurb Ethan's problems had been mentioned a bit more clearly than "handicapped" and "medical condition".

I've found the whole set-up very sloppy. Ethan must be the exception from the rule because a child with his handicaps being as energetic as he is described??? Sorry, I have only experienced the opposite so far. Also, after a heart surgery transporting the kid back to his room??? Geez - I hope that my kid never needs one in the US if that is the usual way. My son had been in the ICU for a few days with his personal nurse.
So...while I liked Ethan, his character, actions and story didn't fit. In the end I was just annoyed.

Let's talk about Uncle Lawrence. Why was he even in the book? To add a villian? Geez, that was kind of useless. For that he wasn't present enough. The only thing I got to see because of him was that Daniel took far too long in my opinion to man up and show him the door. Why the **** did he even allow his uncle to pay for his nurse? And being afraid of him? Oh my...poor Jonah, your "spouse to be" is kind of a wuss...

I think if I hadn't loved the narrator, I wouldn't have finished. For me it defintely was the wrong book. Readers who love overly romantic, tearstained declarations, commitment-shy timid MCs who just think over and over again how much the other one already means to them...(yes, phrases like this have been used over and over again), sprinkled with a dose of adorable cute sick kid, they will love this book.

So, one star of the two stars is for Randy Fuller.

This was fantastic. I love books that show true emotions, that show conflict, that admit that love isn't always easy. Jonah and Daniel are instantly attracted, but fight the attraction, first to remain professional, then out of fear...fear of commitment on Jonah's part, fear of his uncle's backlash toward Jonah, on Daniel's part.

I also loved that it wasn't just about sex. Many male/male books are just about sex, but I read them for the romance, not the sex. There was plenty of romance here. It was great to see it change and grow and blossom.

And Ethan was absolutely adorable. He was realistically portrayed and just captured my heart.

I thought the writing was solid. It was interesting throughout with humor thrown in here and there without becoming silly or slapstick.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves emotional love stories and doesn't read just for sex scenes.

I will definitely be reading more by Brynn Stein.

*** 2.5 Stars ***

After slogging through the first half of the book, I was happy to see things pick up a little and get more emotional in the last 40% or so. Still, I feel like the MCs had the same 2 or 3 conversations on repeat the entire time and it was pretty tedious after a while.

I thought this was awesome. Unlike some of the other commenters, I didn't think it was slow at all. Strategically belabored at times, perhaps, in order to show just how much the stuff in the each man's past got in the way of moving forward. I liked that. It made it that much more satisfying when they did finally get together.

The way Daniel was there for Jonah and Ethan throughout everything was wonderful. I loved the characters. I didn't find them boring at all, as other commenters have mentioned.

Different books speak to different people and this one sure spoke to me.

Jonah is a dedicated nurse and father to his nephew. He works hard and keeps his head down. Daniel has had more hardships then any one man should endure. But together they each have something to give and find ways to give to each other. They both have to learn to deal with their independent streaks but really are made for each other.

A very sweet love story with 2 very lovely MC's and an adorable little boy. Some angst and outside drama but not really the focus on these 2 guys meeting and falling in love.

Let me start this review talking about the book, then at the end I will explain my three star rating and hope that it makes sense to the readers. This is a story of heart break, disappointment, despair, love, faith, trust and strength. Yes all of those emotions were present for me in this book. The author took two men who had been beaten down by life and people and planted them together along with a precious little boy who had suffered already in his short life.
I am not going to spoil the story for you by telling you what the main characters are going to endure and face, I feel that for some it would considered spoiling the book and for others who are a bit shy towards very emotional reads, it would turn the away. This is one of those books you will either be bored with quickly or be so emotionally invested it will take a while to recover from once you are done. I do want to give you the start to this plot so you can gain a sense of the emotions involved with Daniel and Jonah.
They meet when Daniel wakes up in the hospital from an accident and Jonah is the nurse taking care of him. We learn that Daniel already has a physical disability that is going to only make being independent with his current injuries impossible. We also find that he is carrying around a lot of baggage and sorrow from his life along with an uncle who is totally against homosexuality, which makes it uncomfortable for Daniel since he is gay. The synopsis pretty much tells you about Daniel’s background so I won’t go into that any farther.
Jonah felt his heart being pulled towards Daniel but he had to remain professional, he was the nurse/caregiver, he couldn’t take advantage of an injured man. He also was terrified of commitment because he was still in pain from past rejections. To add to this, he is raising his “son” who also had a disability and he had to put him first and make sure he didn’t bring anyone into their life that would hurt them. Might I say right now that the little boy Ethan was so freaking inspirational and adorable, I fell in love with that kid.
Now I will explain the reason for the 3 star review, let’s start with the cons. I invest in stories that tug at my heart strings, that make me feel and cry but this was a bit too much. It was one thing after another, so much so that it came across as more of a soap opera and became so unrealistic it began to bother me. We start out with three flawed characters, all struggling to make life good with what little they had and the hits just kept coming. At a few points I was screaming for the author to stop torturing them and let them have happiness. The second con was the time it took for Daniel and Jonah to stop with the continued conversation of could they trust each other. I can count at least three times that I sighed and thought please stop beating a dead horse, we got it, they are scared. I would have liked for the author to spend less time on that and more time giving us their story of courage and taking each step in building of their future and more Ethan and his cute personality.
There were many pro’s to this book, such as the writing style. I really enjoyed the way the author used words to paint us the picture of what was going on. Once in a while you come across an author who can actually put words together to make it more than a story but place the reader in the scene and I felt that with this book. I loved the characters and their personalities for the most part, other than the times they got stuck in the winding loop of commitment, but the care and love they showed to others was refreshing. Now something that might not be seen as a pro to most readers but I enjoyed it, was that the author faded to black with the sex. I like taking a break from books that invest so much in the act of sex that they don’t show the real emotional bond between characters so this was a nice change for me and I am appreciative of it.
My suggestion is if you don’t mind reading about depressing emotions throughout a whole book then you will find yourself totally invested in this story. I give it a three because I had equal amounts of what I loved compared to the anguish that I felt during the time I spent in the story. This is a great book for a certain type of person, one who can be swallowed up in dark emotions for a time and come out barely touched but if you are a person with high levels of empathy, then I say grab the tissues and be prepared to be affected.

4 star review by Lily

A well-loved language teacher, Daniel had a significant car accident and is now in need of home help. He already lost one leg five years ago in Afghanistan and the other one now is broken on top of the other injuries he sustained. As a result his only living relative who is his uncle hires a private nurse to care for Daniel. Although Daniel and his wealthy uncle are not close to each other, his uncle seems to be ready to help him financially but that is it, nothing more. This seems partly because Daniel’s uncle is homophobic and Daniel is gay. The trouble is Daniel’s private nurse is a gay male, Jonah Thacker.

There is an instant attraction between Jonah and Daniel but Jonah is very mindful of the professional patient/nurse boundaries and also is very focused on looking after his disabled son with significant health issues.

As Jonah and Daniel grow closer to each other, Daniel’s uncle feels more threatened by their closeness, and at the same time Jonah’s son starts to become unwell. As you would suspect, Daniel’s uncle does his best to keep Daniel and Jonah apart but does he succeed? Well you need to read the story to know what happens next.

Let me tell you one thing about this book, I was absolutely captivated by the way this story started! I was instantly caught up in Daniel’s awakening. Wow! What a start! I found myself directly in the story beside Daniel and I even got tearful.

I love how the romance gently developed between Daniel and Jonah. I absolutely loved Jonah’s son who is in fact his nephew. The way he behaved was atypical of his age group, which made him so sweet.

Jonah is a loyal man who works very hard to care for his son and loves what he’s doing as a profession. Is he perfect? Not at all and that is one of the things that I loved about him. This man is fallible and is not afraid of apologising and trying to correct his mistakes. He is no quitter and he’s not an arrogant person. His insecurities are justifiable but he is willing to work on his issues with the right man beside him.

Daniel is just wonderful. He also has insecurities and is still missing his long-term partner who passed away during his army service. He is a kind-hearted man who is loved by his students and also by Jonah and his son. The way he comes out of the closet at his work place was cautious which made so much sense to me.

I thought the writer created believable and lovable characters for the story. The dialogue between Jonah, his son and Daniel was appropriate and complementing the story.
I guess my issue was with the dialogue between Daniel and his uncle. Some parts of the dialogue did not feel realistic enough to complement everything I wrote above. The uncle’s threats at times were too exaggerated for me to see it as believable. I know that I am reading fiction but when a writer creates main characters that are believable and awesome, a character like this uncle stands out too much. It was not so much the actions of the uncle that did not sit well with me but the way he spoke to Daniel. It was a bit too “Hollywoody” or daytime drama to match this story. Saying that, I would still reread this story because I loved the plot, Daniel, Jonah and little Ethan.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

Oh, you guys, this was a good one. There were a few things I had a little trouble with, but overall, I really enjoyed this story and read it all in one sitting. Stein gives us a great story with a wonderful romantic build about two slightly broken men who needed to find each other in order to heal.

Can I start with the main characters? I loved these guys. Each had different qualities that endeared them to me. Jonah has such a huge heart, and he’s so kind and wonderful. He was exactly everything a nurse and a parent should be. I loved watching him interact with his son and I loved the way he cared for Daniel in his professional capacity. That’s not say he was perfect though, and I even loved that about him. The way he handled some situations, especially where his relationship with Daniel was concerned, was definitely not the right choice. But he’s also willing to admit he was wrong and take the steps to correct it. His last relationship was definitely bad, and it makes sense that he’s overly cautious. Especially because he’s the only one to care for his son and he can’t afford to be careless. When things with Daniel moved from professional to personal, there was a part of himself he kept at arm’s length. It made complete sense, and if he had jumped in too quickly or too completely, it wouldn’t have felt real. I love the way the author portrayed him.

And Daniel? Well, I just adored him. I loved the way he blossomed and grew over the course of the book. When we first meet him, he’s just waking up in the hospital. And he freely admits to himself that when the accident happened, and things started to go black, he was not exactly opposed to dying. But now that he hasn’t, he’s grateful he’s alive. As he gets to know Jonah more, and then falls in love with him, he realizes that he hasn’t really been living the last few years. The way he changed and came out of his shell was subtle, but it was plain to see he was changing and I loved that. The chemistry between these two character sparked brightly, and they just made sense.

Living Again starts out with Daniel Larson waking up in the hospital where he finds out that on top of a broken arm and some broken ribs, he has also broken his only leg. This leaves him unable to get around on his own, so his Uncle has hired him a home care nurse. Daniel doesn’t have any illusions that he doesn’t need the help, but once he sees his hot nurse, he knows this is going to be pure torture.

As Daniel and Jonah start getting to know one another, Jonah opens up about his handicapped son ,and Daniel tells the story of his slain lover. Daniel and Jonah become great friends and soon begin a relationship, much to Uncle Lawrence’s anger. Unfortunately, Uncle Lawrence isn’t the only hurdle the two men have to overcome.

While the Daniel and Jonah are trying to overcome their differences in wealth, and Jonah’s reticence about starting a new relationship, they also have to worry about Jonah’s son Ethan. Ethan is a lovely little boy who takes everything in stride and has issues that would leave most adults I know crying in a corner. Daniel and Ethan get along great, and Daniel finds himself falling quickly for both Jonah and Ethan, but Jonah wants to go slowly with the relationship.

I truly liked the two MCs in this book and I liked watching their relationship change and grow, but I felt like the issues they were battling could have been resolved much quicker than they were. Jonah’s pigheaded side almost cost him everything, and Daniel almost let it. Thankfully, in the end, they got it all worked out and there was a HEA. Just as an FYI, though, if you don’t like “fade to black” love scenes and 100% off page sexual encounters, then this will not be the book for you.

So sweet and beautifully written. I liked all of the main characters. Daniel has survived so much, but his life felt empty before meeting Jonah and Ethan. His instant attraction to both the man and little boy was heartfelt. Jonah has experienced loss; both his sister and what he thought was to be his 'forever' man. It's marked him, making him fearful. I loved little Ethan's vivacious spirit. The slow build of the relationship, even with each man at different times second guessing themselves, and their love for Ethan make this story feel real. In the end I have to give kudos to Daniel for his absolute devotion to both of his men. All sexual encounters are behind closed doors making this a clean read.

I cannot really review this audio-book as I was unable to finish it. I tried three times but gave up all three times for the same reason. To my taste it's a bit too treacly and the characters are just too piteous.

When I was growing up there was a television program called Queen for a Day. My grandmother liked it and I'd sometimes watch with her but no one else in my family really cared for it. The premise of the show as that women who'd had bad luck in life or were just in bad situations would come on the show and tell the audience just how terribly they had it. This one's kid had died and now a second was sick, that one's husband drank and had lost his job, now abstemious he couldn't find another, etc. After each story the audience would respond and an applause meter would decide which contestant was the winner. They'd get some help from the situation that they were in, a slew of prizes, crowned as queen for a day with a throne, a crown and dozen red roses.

Every time I started listening to this book again I was reminded of that show and the schadenfreude involved. Perhaps my grandma was wiser than me. I'm pretty sure that she saw more suffering in her life and I'm guessing that there is a measure of comfort that such stories have. I too am a sucker for hard luck stories. This one just seemed to be beyond my limits.

The path to true love never runs smooths and that holds true for the MC's in this wonderful story. We meet Daniel in a hospital regaining consciousness from a head on collision.Daniel is confused calling for his deceased boyfriend.Jonah, who is the nurse that Daniel's Uncle Lawrence has hired explains the situation.Daniel who was injured previously as a translator (his leg was amputated) now has a cast on his other leg, broken ribs, arms, and a concussion and bruises and his eyes are bandaged from the broken windshield.Uncle Lawrence hired Jonah from agency to care for Daniel when he's released from the hospital and is shocked that he's a male.Uncle Lawrence is a big old homophobic, elitist, jerk who along with Daniel's late father can't stand the thought that he's gay.Jonah explains to the old fool that a woman might be unable to lift Daniel and Daniel explains to the old fart that he feels more comfortable with a male, and has a good rapport with Jonah. The two men become friends and both can't deny the attraction. Also, we meet Jonah's nephew that he's adopted (too long to explain) Ethan who is a sweet and just plain adorable.I won't say more, other than this is a sweet story and a good read!

I loved this book from the very start until the very end. Daniel has had a crappy hand dealt to him, his best friend and lover died and in the same accident he lost a leg. THEN several years later he is in a car accident and breaks the one good leg he has. I mean seriously, that is just a crappy hand! Daniel’s uncle hates the fact that he is, but since he is Daniel’s only family he just tries to ignore it and uses his money to hire a nurse to help Daniel until he is able to be self-sufficient again. Daniel’s uncle flip out when he finds out the nurse is Johan. Jonah has been dealt his own crappy hand but he doesn’t let anything get him down. As Daniel and Jonah spend more time together they get to know each other and become friends. Their relationship is sweet and real and you can feel the emotions come off the page. Add in Jonah’s adorable little boy and you can’t help but fall in love and root for them. Of course everything isn’t smooth sailing but these two guys will let nothing stop them from being happy. It was a great story and I highly recommend it.

Wow! This was simply amazing, such a beautiful book about balancing love and responsibilities. Daniel is such an amazing character his strength and perseverance through all life has thrown at him is simply amazing, while Jonah is the most intelligent and caring man. But while Daniel and Jonah are the main characters of this book my favorite character is Jonah’s son, Ethan. His joy and zest for life in spite of all of his medical problems is contagious. I loved watching Daniel and Jonah’s relationship grow and I especially loved that both characters had personal obstacles they had to overcome to totally devote themselves to the relationship.

Overall this was an amazing story of the love found in a family you create. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves m/m stories and especially if you like stories with children in them.

3.5 stars. I enjoyed Daniel and Jonah’s story and the book held my attention as I followed their relationship developing. I found the book to be touching with humor mostly from Jonah’s wonderful son Ethan. There is a great scene where we get to watch Ethan “ gajjy-date” that brought tears to my eyes as I read it. Living again is a romance but if you are someone who likes a lot of sex in your MM romances you may be disappointed. I like my books with hot and heavy smexy scenes and this aspect was missing from Living again. However, overall I did like the story and I look forward to reading other books from Brynn Stein.

I thought this book was really good but had the potential for so much more. The 3main characters were great but the story fell a little short for me. There was no smexy scenes at all, that is a huge no no for me. Also I fell in love with Ethan and he just broke my heart and the ending doesn't tell me anything about how he is doing and what will happen to his future.

2.5 stars. I liked the slow build that other reviewers disliked but the 'should I move in or not' conversation really was flogged to death. The MCs were nice enough but lacked a real spark, the uncle was cartoonish rather than menacing. The kid was pretty awesome, though.
