No one in Jeremy Collins's life ever stays. His parents, sister, and wife are all dead. Now he has taken Cole Alston into his home to help him recover from years of abuse at the hands of his ex. Jeremy hopes Cole, who he loves, will stick around, but after eight years of Cole not being allowed to make his own choices, Jeremy doesn't think he has the right to ask. As Jeremy keeps his concerns and desires to himself, his best friend Bethann calls on him for a huge favor--claim he's the father of her baby so she isn't ostracized in their small town for sleeping with a married man. However doing so would be tantamount to denying his relationship with Cole. Rumors fly before Jeremy can explain to Cole that he said no, and suddenly the whole town is in his business. Rather than reassure Cole, Jeremy's explanations have the opposite effect. Something is going on in Cole's mind that Jeremy doesn't know about, and in order to get Cole to talk, Jeremy will need to confront his own deepest fear.
No stranger to the writing world, A.M. Arthur has been creating stories in her head since she was a child and scribbling them down nearly as long. She credits an early fascination with male friendships (bromance wasn't a thing yet) with her later discovery of and subsequent affair with m/m romance stories. When not writing, she can be found in her kitchen, pretending she's an amateur chef and trying to not poison herself or others with her cuisine experiments. *This is the second book in a series that should be read in order*
Cole Alston finally got his parents house and barn cleaned out and most of the items sold with the help of his new friend and lover, Jeremy Collins. The two have settled into a routine and as much normalcy as possible, given Cole's PTSD like symptoms and recurring nightmares after suffering years of abuse at the hands if his ex-asshole. Jeremy's words, not mine. Martin is long gone, but not forgotten. And to be honest, the scars that he left on Cole both physically and emotionally, may never completely heal.
Jeremy and Cole are trying to settle into a relationship that they aren't open about while dealing with Cole's demons, and now they are having to deal with nosey neighbors and rumors on top of their already full plates. You know how small towns are. Jeremy's best friend is pregnant, and when people assume it's Jeremy's, she doesn't correct them. People in town are whispering about the 'queer city boy' that is rooming with Jeremy. More than anything, Jeremy wants to be open and honest about everything. But he understands how secretive and still fragile Cole is, so he respects that and keeps mum about their relationship. And as much as he wants to tell all the chatty cathies that it's not even his baby, he doesn't want to damage his friends reputation either. So he sits, and simmers, until he's faced with the very real possibility of losing the person he's come to love, because Jeremy can't face his own demons.
There was a reality to this story that hit close to home for me. As someone that lived in an abusive relationship for years, I see a lot of myself in Cole. It's admirable to me when an author does their research and nails those subtle nuances, things that make you cringe like the breaking glass, things that cause nightmares. All the symptoms Cole suffers are a very real thing and they are portrayed accurately, and that is refreshing, even though difficult to read, I liked the effort Arthur put into this story in that aspect. But then there is the gentle, kind, loving Jeremy who will do anything to make sure Cole feels safe, loved, wanted and needed. How the two of them balance each other out. And the letter on the computer, that was just pure genius, I loved it!
So, yes, there are some hard parts to this story but it's also a story about love and being yourself regardless of how crazy that may be. Jeremy even tells Cole, "I already know you're crazy, and I still love you." and that was the best damn line I've read in a long time. Everyone has baggage, and everyone has an equal out that to help them carry it. This is a also a sweet, sexy love story with a few speed bumps that had to be navigated along the way. Definitely a must read.
Good lord, I really can't count the ways I love AM Arthur. I was nervous about how the blurb made me think this one was gonna play out, but I should hav known better. Jeremy was always such a steadfast, solid character. A genuinely good guy and I just love love him and Cole together.
AM Arthur can simply do no wrong with me. Def recommend this and Unearthing Cole.
This was ok. I didn't like Bethann. I didn't like how Jeremy wouldn't come right out and tell Cole that he loved him, wanted him in his life forever. I didn't like Cole frankly being a coward and deciding to leave Jeremy because he was afraid of the relationship. I get they both have suffered and that is very hard to overcome. I absolutely get that. But they didn't talk about those things with each other and Cole decided the best solution instead of talking was running.
They live in a small town. Ok. But does Bethann really need to have a father for her child to not be ostracized? This isn't the Scarlet Letter and we don't live in the middle ages. Single mothers are a thing, Bethann. But of course she wanted to "trap" Jeremy into being with her so she threw the lie out there and waited to see what would stick.
Overall, this is ok and I rate this 3 stars. It is emotional and I liked how Cole fixed his relationship with Jeremey, I just wish they could have done that earlier.
Yeah that's right. I tore through this one so fast it didn't even make it on to my 'currently reading' shelf. This book was so full of feels and angst and emotions, I couldn't stop until I was done. I was totally taken with Jeremy & Cole by the time I got done reading 'Unearthing Cole'. I adore these two men even more after this book.
Jeremy loves Cole so much and he's willing to do whatever it takes to make sure Cole is happy and if that means being with him well that makes it all the better because being with Cole is what makes Jeremy happy.
'Understanding Jeremy' continues basically from where 'Unearthing Cole' left off only it is told from Jeremy's perspective and we get to find out more about what has happened in the past to make him into the person he is now. It is very well done and the storyline moves smoothly. Even though a lot of Jeremy's past is revealed it's not done through jumping back and forth in time but by Jeremy sharing his memories.
If you haven't read 'Unearthing Cole' read it first otherwise chances are this book won't be anywhere near as good as it is, for you because you'll probably feel lost and maybe a bit confused throughout most, if not all of it. But they're both wonderful reads so it shouldn't be a hardship at all. Yeah, I simply loved these books.
A.M. Arthur is definitely a must read for me after this.
I really enjoyed this book. I usually hate the 'happy for now' ending, but the ending is perfect for Jeremy and Cole. Even I'm still hoping there'd be book 3 in a future.
Despite the 'usual' annoying female character in the book, I love the writing style, love the 'chemistry' between the two MC. And I really adored the love Jeremy gave to Cole, and how strong his feeling for the broken man.
This is a good pick, and I'm happy I decided I read the series. Well done A.M. Arthur!
The sequel to Unearthing Cole, and a perspective shift as we now inhabit Jeremy's headspace. I like this two characters quite a bit, but felt Arthur could have delved a little more into their emotions. It sort of seemed like there was a lot going on in their heads, but not a lot got conveyed to the reader.
No matter what life throws at us, we have to be prepared to face it head-on! Jeremy and Cole have had MORE than their share of the bad that life can throw at you, so it was really good to see that FINALLY, some good was coming their way, but not without a few setbacks... of course! UGH!!!
I hope to get started on Uniting Hearts in the very near future... I really am ready for my HEA with these two!!! *grin*
“If your smile warming me inside means love, then I love you. If feeling pride when you stand up for me despite everything means love, then I love you. If wanting to touch you just because you’re standing next to me in the room means love, then I love you. It’s what I know when I’m with you, Jeremy, and I think that’s love.”
What is so good about this series is how the author maintains the POV of her characters. Their voices and consistency are felt all throughout the first book and this one. In this installment, we have Jeremy narrating the story which picked up exactly where it ended in the first book. Jeremy and Cole are now living together but as for their relationship, both are still unsure about it. Cole was still reeling from his asshole ex-boyfriend sudden reappearance but he’s trying to at least move on from that episode. Jeremy meanwhile is still in cloud nine for having Cole with him although he’s still very much wary about Cole’s plan for the future.
When Jeremy’s best friend Bethann asked a favor from him to claim the baby she was carrying, Jeremy has to say no. Bethan has been there for him at his lowest point but he won’t deny Cole and his relationship with him. This didn’t go well though, when Bethan panicked and told a co-worker that Jeremy is the baby daddy. This conversation was privy to Cole so along with the rumor in town that Cole is gay, Jeremy’s relationship with him is also on the rocks.
Fear of losing a loved one yet again is what Jeremy’s most scared of so when Cole decided to break up with him, he knew that he’s got to do something soon to save the relationship and show the man he loves what he truly means to him. I just loved Jeremy’s character here. He’s just too nice and too perfect. His patience towards Cole was just beyond and I loved that he’s not afraid to take risks. The abuse that Cole went through his ex was more detailed here and I feel like killing the guy myself. I mean, I almost wished that he (Martin) was gang-raped to death when the “incident” in the first book happened to him. I mean, Jeremy should’ve at least got to punch him once.
The tone of the story was very nerve-wracking yet romantic. I loved the easy countenance of the premise and the very realistic dialogues in it. I also loved the unpredictability of the story.
This is one of those series that has its own voice and makes you root for a certain character from the get go.
Another great series on my list! Thank you A.M. Arthur for this amazing book!
2.5 stars This author was new to me when I picked up Unearthing Cole and got totally enthralled by that story. It is still up to today one of the books I will mention and recommend to others.
So when I found out that there was a sequel coming I was so excited and anxious to get my hands on it.
Unfortunately for me this sequel didn’t work out as well as the first part to the point that I can say I would honestly wouldn’t have minded if it wouldn’t have been there.
This story continues from where UC left off. We get a glimpse of how Jeremy and Cole are living their lives, the struggles they face and it is nice to read them being together.
There isn’t really much happening in this book, however, although I will have to say that it is nice to read some background information on Cole and his life and I liked how the author used that in this book to make Cole and Jeremy get closer.
To be honest there isn’t so much more I can mention in this review. The blurb gives you an outline of what’s happening and that is all that happens. The inner confrontations and the hot sexual action makes it acceptable to read but for me it didn’t bring me anything extra to this couple.
I loved Cole and Jeremy in the first book and that will always be one of my favorite books but for me it could have stayed that way.
I can understand though that some readers will like to read more about these two men and the writing of A.M Arthur is flawless and very likable as I after reading the first book have read more books from her hand and will continue doing that for sure.
I am going to end this review with the sentence that for me shows the brilliance of this writer and the love that is there between the two men.
“If your smile warming me inside means love, then I love you. If feeling pride when you stand up for me despite everything means love, then I love you. If wanting to touch you means love, then i love you. It’s what I know when I’m with you, Jeremy, and I think that’s love.” Review written for Love Bytes: http://lovebytesreviews.com/2014/07/2...
Nice follow-up to Cole's book. I didn't like the storyline with Bethann, yes I know it was already in the blurb, nevertheless reading it was a tad bit aggravating. Thankfully the author wrote a satisfying development. I was especially glad that there wasn't any mentioning of Cole adopting the baby-on-the-way. Thanks for that.
4.25 stars Still a bit of an HFN instead of an HEA, but I feel much more positive about how this one ended. And since today is still the weekend for me, I'm gonna go ahead and read the last one to see if these guys can stick the landing on their relationship!
**I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.**
Understanding Jeremy is the second book in the Discovering Me series. It should be read in the order that the author intended.
Understanding Jeremy is told from Jeremy's POV and picks up where Unearthing Cole leaves us. Jeremy and Cole are living together and exploring their relationship until Bethann drops a bomb into their lives. I do love that you get to see more of Jeremy's past which helps you understand him more and the chooses he's made.
I wasn't a fan of Bethann but I loved seeing where this story went. The chemistry is still palpable between Jeremy and Cole. I can't wait to see where it goes.
I love the feeling you get when you pick up a sequel and you immediately step right back into the story. You immediately reconnect with the characters and you're tickled pink to spend more time with them. Well that's the way it felt when I started reading Understanding Jeremy (Discovering Me #2). Cole has been living with Jeremy now for a short while. Jeremy doesn't have any idea how to tell Cole how much he loves him and how much he wants him to stay. That's pretty much what was happening in the first book but just because the first book ended didn't mean the story was over. One of the things I really connected to was the fact that A M Arthur did not solve all of Cole's problems with an ‘I love you’. He still has demons to battle and luckily for him Jeremy is in his corner.
Yeah it's sweet. But hey, what's wrong with a little sweet every now and then
Great to take the other viewpoint of Cole's and Jeremy's relationhip and see how it develops once Cole moves in seriously with Jeremy.
Cole is so fragile and I could see why Jeremy didn't say the words Cole seems to want. The angst with BethAnn played out realistically as they always do in AM Arthur's books.
I can see the possibility of continuing this series, but would also be happy enough if we left this pair on the brink of forever-happiness.
I loved catching up with Jeremy and Cole. Getting a little more insight into Jeremy's past and watching them grow together.
But over shadowing the story was too much sex for me. And to be honest lines like The previously forbidden spot winked at me from between his cheeks. Seem so old and corny now.
I also found the blurb slightly misleading regarding the Bethann story line. Not the big drama I was expecting.
This is the sequel to the marvelous “Unearthing Cole” which definitely must be read first. I had this downloaded the moment it became available, that’s how eager I was to find out what was going to happen next with Jeremy and Cole.
In “Unearthing Cole”, Cole Alston found himself returning to his hometown of Franklin, North Carolina following the death of his mother. His mother had paid little attention to him for most of his life, more obviously so once realizing he was gay. She and his father had been hoarders so Cole found himself with a huge mess to sort through, a run- down property to sell and an abusive ex-boyfriend to continue eluding. Enter Jeremy Collins, owner of a local antique/ second hand shop and all around friendly, easy mannered guy. Jeremy had been eyeing the Alston’s hoard for a while, and when he met Cole to talk about cutting a deal for it, let’s just say his eye definitely fixated on him! The storyline picks up here two months after the events in “Unearthing Cole”. I think it is super that while the first book was told from Cole’s POV, this one is told from Jeremy’s. We get to know what was going on in Jeremy’s head in the past, as well as the present. Love this approach to the series. Cole is still living with Jeremy in his spacious, yet cozy apartment above the shop. His parent’s property didn’t sell to the first interested party, so Cole’s funds - and thus his options – are limited for the time being. The townies have no idea that Cole is gay, or that Jeremy is bisexual, so the intimate nature of their relationship is a secret. This includes Jeremy’s best friend Bethann, who is also the sister of his deceased wife. Cole has no desire to out himself to the town, largely because he feels people will wonder what Jeremy is doing sharing his home with a gay man. He is adamant that Jeremy not potentially risk his business and his good standing in the minds of the people of the small southern town of Franklin. I couldn’t help but feeling Cole was the one being hindered by his mind here… Jeremy has it bad for Cole, in fact he realizes early on that he is in love with him. While he wants so badly to tell Cole this, he is set on giving Cole room to heal - to discover for his self what he wants from life now that he is out from under the shadow of his abusive ex, Martin. Cole was emotionally as well as physically scarred by his time with Martin, and his dismissive parents sure never helped his self- esteem. Jeremy wants nothing more than to see some of the ingrained and detrimental behaviors that Cole exhibits fall by the wayside. He wants to help Cole find inner strength and learn to value who he is. Jeremy is truly a rock, but rocks can be hard to budge – they can also be crushed… Cole is feeling somewhat overwhelmed by all that is happening. The finality of the death of his mother, Jeremy’s kindness, his deep feelings for Jeremy, his new found freedom from Martin are all weighing on him. Yet Cole is also enjoying this new life. He’s coping better with situations that in the past had meant sure panic attacks. He is even going “picking” with Jeremy, and learning more about the trade. He is hopeful, but still guarded. Early on in the story Jeremy suffers an injury, and while it is fairly minor, Cole finds himself in the familiar role of caretaker, helping Jeremy, cleaning and cooking. It’s nothing that he hasn’t already been doing, and hey, he enjoys cooking, but an odd sense of duty and expectations overtakes him. Jeremy notices that Cole is becoming a bit too obsessive and striving for perfection in his endeavors, and he worries that this is carry over from Cole’s time with Martin. Oh how he bristles at the idea that anything Cole would do in their home would cause him to fall back on old behavior patterns. He vows to himself yet again not to put pressure on Cole to stay in Franklin, but he does open his heart to him. Add this to the mix - bed hopping Bethann finds out she is pregnant and has the audacity to ask Jeremy to claim he is the father. What the heck Bethann?! I don’t know if she became pregnant on purpose to try to snare Jeremy, it seemed like it but was murky. Shit hits the fan at this point… No way is Jeremy even going to entertain that idea. Jeremy tells Bethann the truth about him and Cole. Her reaction caused me to have a hard time finding any sympathy for her dilemma. The entire situation causes doubts to come crashing down on Cole and becomes a direct catalyst for his following emotions and actions. Cole is afraid to let Jeremy know how much he cares for him. Jeremy has lost so many loved ones in his life. Cole wonders why Jeremy should be risking a relationship with him. With Cole…who sees himself as someone with loads of complexities, who doesn’t know exactly what he wants, who is still fighting inner demons, and who just can’t bring himself to be the reason Jeremy is outed in the town where he has established his business and home. Jeremy has known Bethann for years. He could have a chance to have a life with her, have a child, to not have to “rock the boat” in town by revealing he is bisexual. How could Cole deny him that? Arghhh!! Ok, so here is where I was telling my friends that I wanted to shake Cole. I also felt the need to reach into the pages and hug Jeremy. Then I kept reading and started crying. Yes, these guys made me cry! The author does a superb job of making their communication issues perfectly plausible. After all, both men had some big issues in their pasts plaguing their emotional present, including one whopper that Jeremy finally disclosed to Cole when Bethann announced her pregnancy. The story gets very intense, however, there is no angst fest here, the relationship arc progresses beautifully throughout the story. There are tender moments, there are terrifying moments and there are “oh you did not just do that” moments. The manner in which Cole finally communicates to Jeremy exactly what he needs is indeed one of the loveliest written ploys in a story I have ever read. It was extremely effective for me, and for Jeremy.
I absolutely love the characters of Jeremy and Cole. AM Arthur has a wonderful talent for writing contemporaries that feature authentic guys working together on their relationship, and their individual issues. The back drop of small town North Carolina and Jeremy’s profession of “picking” for antiques is something that I personally find enamoring as well. Looks like there is going to be more stories for these two in the future and I say - bring it on! They are in a solid place at the end of this story, but still have a lot of healing to help each other through. I must add. That cover, Jeremy. Niiice. ;-)
Understanding Jeremy is the second book in AM Arthur's Discovering Me series. If you've read Unearthing Cole, this book will help bring about some satisfaction after a HFN ending.
Personally, I couldn't read it fast enough. Cole and Jeremy continue to grow closer, but still have some issues from their past to deal with. These are two men with some heavy baggage to say the least.
Words cannot express how mad I am at Bethann. I wanted to claw her eyes out for her selfish mistakes, and for being a stereotypical annoying female character. She is an ass for sticking Jeremy in the middle between Cole and herself.
This is a story of small town life at it's finest. Jeremy and Cole are still in a secret relationship, rumors spread like wildfire, and the gossip lines know no end.
One major issue addressed in this book is that of abuse and it's lingering effects. I appreciate the way the author represents this aspect of the character, from big things to little things. It's all written with a whole lot of knowledge and care.
I love the author's writing style and her ability to dive into some heavy topics without regret. When an issue is introduced, she spares no expense in exploring it fully.
And in the end, Understanding Jeremy is a sweet romance that's entwined with plenty of angst and emotion. For me though, I find it to be a good bridge between books one and three more than anything else. It builds upon their relationship, allows both men to heal some more, and sets up the scene for Uniting Hearts.
Told from Jeremy's POV, this story picks up pretty much where Unearthing Cole left off. The author did a fantastic job of recapping events from the first book, though, so I think you could read this one as a standalone if you want. However, you would miss a great story and the more detailed background about Cole that book one gives.
We learn more about Jeremy's background and his relationship with his female best friend. Cole and Jeremy go through some rough patches with their relationship. Jeremy wants to protect Cole and Cole still doesn't fully trust that Jeremy wants him around.
This book also has a pretty good HFN but some things happened that definitely left me wanting to know more. Originally published in 2014, it will be nearly six years before A.M. Arthur finally writes an HEA for Jeremy and Cole. That book is Uniting Hearts and will be published in late May 2020.
This is a series second in a contemporary MM romance trilogy with a continuous plot and the same main characters. New editions of previously published works. Trigger warning: descriptions of hoarding problem and of past abuse in the backstory.
In the first title Cole returns to his childhood home town to deal with his inheritance left by his hoarder parents and bumbs into Jeremy, the local antique store keeper who agrees to help him. It was a slow burn romance story with its angst. Here they're already together.
The angst is in them resolving whether Cole will still opt to leave or will he stay, Jeremy having to deal with that, Cole confronting his abuser, and Jeremy suddenly being accused of knocking up a local girl, a friend of his and both of them having to take that and what it makes Cole think about their future relationship.
Some reviewers commented with "too much sex"which oftentimes is my complaint. I never thought that this time. It's the same solid AMA writing and I've no problem with it here whatsoever. I don't like these for straight 5 stars but I've no clear complaints either. There's nothing wrong I could point out and nothing wrong with steady 4 something grading either.
This book is a continuation of Unearthing Cole. While it is possible to read this as a standalone, I wouldn’t advise it. There’s a lot of things that happen in book one that you’d be behind the eight ball for most of the book. Things are discussed, but there would be too many unanswered questions and some confusion having not read Unearthing Cole.
In the same way as was done in book one, this book is told only in one POV. This time it’s Jeremy. His story was breached in book one, but you will dive deeper into his past in this book. Things were already complicated in this new relationship, but it’s about to get more complicated. Outside forces continue to wreak havoc on their fragile relationship, and while they are strong in some areas, there are others they are not.
I find the book consistent with how things were in book one. The author puts a lot of work into the details of her stories and those details see just as important in book 2. I feel like she handles the heavy topics of domestic violence and PTSD with respect and doesn’t downplay it. That said, it doesn’t take center stage in the story. It is the background character, and Jeremy and Cole’s relationship is the primary character in the book.
I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed book 1. I feel like Jeremy and Cole are good together, balance each other out, and keep each other grounded. I like how it’s the same couple throughout the series. Not only are we introduced to them, but we also get to go past the getting together part, and see how life is going for them. There is another book coming, and it continues their story. It’s a story I’m dying to find out more about. I highly recommend this book. I also guarantee it that you will find yourself cheering them on.

This is an emotional romantic tale about Couple: (still-trying-to-find-himself) Cole and Antiques Dealer Jeremy. Just so you know there is a bit of a soap opera-ish aspect to this story, while still being engaging. This second chapter did elicit several strong emotions from me such as pissed-off, anger, and more pissed-off. Fortunately, there is an HFN ending, so I did finally calm down. The story also has a bit of medium angst with a side of sweetness. An enjoyable read, on to the next chapter…
Book two in the trilogy of Cole and Jeremy. As Cole continues to struggle with his PTSD Jeremy gets massively let down by his best friend and causes the small town to look at him and judge him, mostly unfavourably. I loved this story as much as the first, and I'm off to read the final episode next. Gorgeous men, heartfelt story lines, just amazing writing that makes you smile and then makes you sad.
I loved the way this story concluded. Jeremy truly is an amazingly compassionate guy. The amount of loss he has suffered, and his own insecurities make him stronger. As for Cole his not wanting to upset or anger anyone because of his past, just makes him that much more endearing. Loved the conclusion.
Sweet, lovely and a great follow-up to the first book in the series (and yes, it should be read first for this one to make sense and yes, it is worth it!). Perfectly, imperfect characters who perfect for each other and deserve their HEA.
I loved Jeremy’s perspective as him and Cole develop their story. It’s a short story and builds on the relationship. I thought it was great and I liked seeing how they have progressed. I definitely recommend it.
