I RECEIVED A DRC FROM THE PUBLISHER VIA EDELWEISS+. THANK YOU.

My Review
: In a slightly different timeline this'd be about Lance Armstrong. Not much would change apart from names and locations.

I've reviewed four of these to date. I like the overall messaging, focus plus drive can lead to success; I'm less excited about the athlete focused entries, but that's personal to me.

Sir Chris Hoy's name was unknown to me until Paul Hollywood mentioned him in season eleven of The Great British Bake Off, when eventual winner Peter Sawkins made a Chris Hoy cake-bust (that Hoy liked and complimented Peter on). I've desultorily poked about to see what is the what about him, and found him a strikingly decent human being.

So more than my usual slightly grudging three athlete-stars to this entry in a series I can see kids really liking...if it's a subject or a person they're already interested in.

Almost all the art for this publisher, Frances Lincoln Ltd. across all its publishing areas, is very high-quality to my eye. It's the case here, too:

To my eye, the spreads are all quite kinetic, quite full of vigor, as is appropriate for a biking world leader. I was not ever bored by this entry, unlike an earlier one on David Beckham. That half-star was as much as I could make my uneasy-about-athletics self do...too much permanent damage incurred while using one's body to entertain others.

YMMV, of course, and best to get kids things they're interested in and will enjoy while saving the adult worries for later.

I think....

Chris Hoy is one of the most decorated and well known athletes in the UK, but I had never heard of him. When he was a young boy, he became interested in BMX racing and started competing when he was only 7. When he watched a bicycle race on TV taking place in a velodrome, he decided he would like to try that. For many years after he competed in world championships and the Olympics collecting medals along the way, and breaking records. At one time, Chris was dealing with injuries and pressure to win, but he had a coach who showed him it was more important to feel calm and happy inside, a great lesson for every high achieving person. When he retired, he raced cars, started a bike company, hosted TV shows and podcasts and even did long distance racing, but his proudest moments was when he and his wife Sarra became parents of two children. It sounds like all was rosy, but cancer struck and he was diagnosed with inoperable cancer. He used this time to find joy and make the most out of the time he had left. He wrote a book, encouraging people to look after their health. He began a big bike ride, raising funds to support those living with cancer. He was knighted by the queen and is now Sir Chris. Maggie's is a charity that these funds support and also is the recipient of a donation for every Chris Hoy book sold. Not only was Chris a dreamer who never gave up on his dream, but promoted that practice makes you better, always find peace and happiness, and even in the face of tragedy, you can use it to help others. All great lessons.

I love this series and how it features famous people that had some big ideas, I think it is such a good way to introduce children to different sports figures. This one has a good overview of the world famous sports star, cyclist Sir Chris Hoy who fell in love with cycling when he was 6 after his parents took him to watch the film ET at his local cinema. Sir Chris would go on to smash multiple racing records - he is an 11-time world champion and a six-time Olympic champion. With a total of seven Olympic medals, six gold and one silver, Hoy is the second most decorated Olympic cyclist of all time. Sir Chris is now facing his own personal health battle as he has sadly been diagnosed with terminal cancer. I thought that the illustrations were really in keeping with his story. I liked the layout too, the pages are all easy to read - it is 5 stars from me for this one - very highly recommended!

A very decent biography of the track cyclist par excellence, made perhaps more notable for the fact the author's usual royalties went to the anti-cancer cause the book ends with. Visually it's daft, with a ramp-and-bricks set-up for children that makes it look way grander than it normally is, but the story of the lad who conquered the world of his sport with determination (and the smallest of margins, at least once) is nicely told. It's debatable how much reach the subject and his sport actually have with the intended readers, but this story is a pleasantly engaging one, with all the right beats justifying Hoy's inclusion in this massive franchise.
