To protect her from rival factions and give her a space to heal, Kieran agrees to guard Everleigh at his home in New York.

Kieran- That monster haunts her nightmares and wakes her with screams. But I'll walk every step of the way with her while she learns to find her joy again.
The road to recovery is fraught with pain, but Everleigh finds solace in Kieran’s care and comfort in his large Irish family as she begins to confront the trauma of her past. As they navigate their new life together, Kieran consoles her in the journey toward healing and cheers her every victory. But just as they begin to explore their deeper feelings, the unthinkable happens- the Russian pakhan returns, determined to reclaim what he believes is his.

Chasing Midnight- Finding beauty in brokenness, strength in the scars and peace in the darkness.
With danger closing in and time running out, Kieran and Everleigh must fight to the death for the future they’d begun to build. But will it be enough to conquer the darkness of a criminal world bent on ripping them apart? Chasing Midnight is a captivating story of courageous healing, passion and strength in the face of danger. A tale in which the power of an unfailing love fights to flourish in even the darkest places.

This is a dark romance with elements of danger, criminal violence, SA and recovery, adult content and sensual scenes. There is no cheating and a hard won HEA. Please consider before reading.

Obsessed. This book had me in a chokehold. I had SO much to do when I started this book, I would’ve finished it within hours had I had the time, but I didn’t.😭
Every spare minute though 🙃 I was in it. Lol
I genuinely can’t believe this a debut author. Who gave us THIS book and at 400 PAGES. Amazing.
She must have been a long time reader first because she delivered what myself, and I hear many others in book groups want more or less of in a book.

You get the darkness, the mafia, humor, found family, great secondary characters whose story I’d love to read, characters who’s stay true to who they are and overall realistic pacing, even down to the pace of when we get the spice. It was a slow burn that made sense.

No third act break up, no miscommunication trope, no big unnecessary secret between main characters (or any at all), no FMC who runs head first into trouble, as if she’s auditioning to be the girl in the horror movies who dies first.
The twist was perfectly executed, there were breadcrumbs perfectly laid that would send you in one direction, then the other. It was on my list of possibilities (kinda) but in no way did I absolutely pinpoint it or see it coming, which is extremely hard to do in a book.

Just perfection.

Now to the main characters ..
The MMC was a perfect blend of alpha type, while also tender for the FMC, especially while she was healing from trauma. He had a great personality, he was funny, loyal, protective, merciless (to others) when needed, caring toward her and his family and even at times he was poetic.

The FMC. This is who I have to rave about. I’m a HARSH critic of FMC. Often they are the reason I’ll DNF a book.
They seem to follow the same trends, either badass but cold, closed off and unnecessarily argumentative, flighty when anything bad happens, or like I mentioned before, the “too stupid to live” type, as in she’s the one in the movies who will hear the noise in the basement and as the audience screams for her to turn around, she runs right down there.
The FMC in this book was none of those things. She started out sheltered/naive but cheerful and positive despite her harsh upbringing. When she did go through her own trauma, it was a process to heal from, but she did. She had a quiet strength and bravery about her, that really showed up when it was needed, yet she never lost HER personality. She never iced people out, or made a complete 180 and became angry and closed off or some crazed assassin who runs headfirst into obvious danger. You get to see her find herself, while also staying true to herself. It was honestly beautiful to read the process she goes through to do all that. She made it known she wasn’t going to let what was done to her change her. I also loved the added journal entries from past to present that was included in most of or all of her POV, it really helped you see the progression in her character.
I wish more books were like this one, with characters like these. After reading hundreds of books, this FMC made it at the top of my list of favorite heroines.
I hope this is only the beginning for this author and she keeps writing because I can’t wait to witness her progression and be there for the ride she takes us on.
With this much talent right at the start of her journey as an author, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see a book or series from her end up on a movie screen one day.
So kudos to you, you did great work, and I hope you give yourself a nice pat on the back for it.
I’ll be cheering you on from the other side of the screen.
I can’t wait to see where you’ll take us next. 🖤

Ps. The playlist was top notch too. I loved it all.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Dark, Emotional, and Impossible to Put Down

Chasing Midnight is the kind of dark mafia romance that grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let go. It’s raw, emotional, and deeply addictive—a story that made me laugh, gasp, and even shed a few tears (and I don’t cry easily).

Everleigh, a sheltered mafia princess, is stolen from her home and subjected to horrors at the hands of a rival Bratva boss. By the time her brother and his fiercely loyal friend Kieran—her childhood playmate—find her, she’s barely alive and shattered. Kieran takes her into his own home in New York, determined to protect her, help her heal, and shield her from the dangers still lurking in the shadows.

What follows is a compelling balance of recovery, romance, and suspense. The trauma is handled with care, showing Everleigh’s gradual journey toward reclaiming her strength. I especially loved how her growing connection with Kieran felt both tender and inevitable—born from shared history, fierce loyalty, and a slow burn that builds with every chapter.

But this is a mafia romance, and danger is never far away. The Russian pakhan isn’t done with her, and when the threat resurfaces, Kieran and Everleigh must fight for their future alongside family and unexpected allies. The loyalty, betrayal, and high stakes kept me glued to the pages.

One of my favorite parts? Watching Everleigh begin to find her voice and her fire again. I’m hoping in the next book we see her fully step into her power and own her place as a true queen in this world.

If you love dark romance with family bonds, gritty danger, a strong emotional core, and a hard-won HEA, Chasing Midnight is an absolute must-read. It’s one of the better mafia romances I’ve read, and I’m already impatient for book two.

I absolutely loved this Mafia romance. I like that it's different from other mafia romances in that it's a slow burn romance of the main characters. The character development is great, and the history of Everleigh, Kieran, and Luca really pull the whole plot together. I think Everleigh (who's name I absolutely love) and Kieran are so good together. The plot is intense and suspenseful. There are definitely dark scenes, so heed trigger warnings. I highly recommend and look forward to reading more of Emerie Quyen's books.

wow just wow!

This book was just wow!!! Omg! It’s soooooooo good!! It’s a slow burn for sure and the mfc and mmc are friends then become more. It’s super realistic and just amazing! This is a super super slow burn so if you’re looking for a book that is very plot heavy and has minimal sex this is definitely for you.! If your a smut book lover who wants all the sexy scenes this may not be the book for you BUT your going to miss out!

Be mindful of the triggers the fmc has a ton of on page trauma she works through.. it’s a super slow burn and very realistic about working through gramma and falling in love it’s soooo different from most books of this genre.

If you like Sonja gray, michel heard, neva atja this book will be up your alley…

I just can’t wait to read the next one in this series!

Everleigh and Kieran
She’s a locked away mafia princess who is sold to the Russians. He is her brothers best friend who helps find her. She’s injured and mentally fragile and he takes her away to a cabin to heal while her brother becomes the don after their fathers death.
She becomes reliant on him and trusts him implicitly. She gradually learns to live again with his help. It’s slow burn, they don’t realise they like each other for 9 months
Good read, enough other action happening and keen to read the next books when they come out.

Chasing Midnight is book one in the Sin and Shadows Series.

This is a fantastic dark mafia romance that made me lose sleep. This book is so well written I couldn't put it down! I think the author did a great job with the storyline that drew me in and held my attention. If you are looking for a dark romance with morally grey MMC then I would recommend adding this book to your TBR!

This is a dark romance so please read TW's if they may effect you.

A guilty pleasure read that leaves you with zero morning after regret. The plot is clever, the characters are nuanced, and the action is perfectly paced. Emerie Quyen writes this slow burn with tantalizing restraint, until the exact right moment when she thrusts the characters through the fire break. The subsequent sex is passionate no holds barred lovemaking - hot but never demeaning, dirty but deep. It’s the ultimate climax to Kieran and Everleigh’s long time coming consummation of their commitment to each other.

Emerie Quyen’s writing is tight. Words are chosen with intention and scenes that might seem like fluff to the impatient reader, or a reader who prefers casual over intimate sex, ultimately reveal themselves to be part of a much more profound storytelling style than you find in more superficial romances. The pieces fall right into place with exquisite orchestration.

Another noteworthy aspect of Quyen’s writing is the way she so carefully weaves multidimensional characters by exploring the threads that bind them. Before there’s Kieran and Everleigh, there’s Kieran and his brothers (cousins) Rory and Patrick. Then there’s Kieran and Luca (brothers by blood oath, friends whose chosen allegiance and unfaltering loyalty underpin the entire story). Kieran’s love for and loyalty to Luca is the scaffold his marriage to Everleigh is built on. The “they were forced to marry” trope that might break the spell of other stories is held aloft by Kieran and Luca’s bond. Kieran marries Everleigh out of allegiance to his friend, unable to leave either one of them vulnerable to the darkest elements of “the life”. It makes the whole plot device not only more believable, but aspirational; if we could all be so lucky to have that kind of friend.

As much as readers root for Kieran and Everleigh, they’ll root for the bonds between Patrick and Rory, Luca and Big Gino, Seamus and Kate, Rory and Fiona, Fiona and Everleigh; even the body guards Liam, Kenny and Grady, and the beloved housekeeper Tilly earn our affection. Honestly, who’s not to love? Well, Vasilyev and his contingent. And Don Antonio. They’re every bit as odious as Quyen designed them to be.

Emerie Quyen hits the ground running (literally!) from page 1 of this debut. While readers endure the smoldering build up to a romantic climax, there’s no waiting on the action. This mafia romance lives up to the promise of the genre: Quyen’s audience can indulge in the violent voyeurism of characters living “the life” while holding out for the toe-curling escapism of Kieran and Everleigh’s romance.

What readers might not count on in mafia romance is a welcome addition to the genre, and that’s Quyen’s absolute commitment to Everleigh’s healing. Content warning: Following Everleigh’s sexual assault, Quyen makes the reader sit with Everleigh as she heals. There are no clichés, no glossing over her trauma to get to “the good part”. In fact, Quyen’s self discipline with the pacing of this story smacks in the face of a world that too often wants survivors to just “move on”. Even more remarkable is Emerie Quyen’s understanding that a survivor’s “progress” towards reclaiming their life is never linear, and yet we move forward.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – A Stunning Debut!

Chasing Midnight by Emerie Quyen is everything I love in a dark, passionate romance—intense, beautifully written, and impossible to put down. From the first page, I was completely hooked by the tension, the rich Irish culture, and the raw, emotional depth of the characters.

Quyen has such a unique voice, effortlessly blending gritty mafia intrigue with poetic, heart-wrenching romance. The chemistry between the leads is electric, their struggles feel real, and the stakes are high. It’s the kind of book that lingers in your mind long after you’ve turned the last page.

For a debut, this is phenomenal. If you love dark romance with strong character dynamics and a deeply immersive world, Chasing Midnight is a must-read. I can’t wait to see what Emerie Quyen writes next!

Keiran is the enforcer the muscle the man who gets his hands dirty for her brother. Everleigh is the woman who has already survived the worst. When she’s kidnapped by enemies, Keiran doesn’t just save her, he claims her by marrying her to keep her safe. But what starts as a protection plan turns into something so much more.

I loved how gentle yet lethal Keiran is. He’s the kind of man who kills without hesitation but cradles Everleigh like she’s made of glass. He doesn’t just protect her, he heals her. And Everleigh? Despite everything she’s been through, she refuses to break. She’s strong, brave, and everything I adore in a heroine.

For a debut novel, Emerie Quyen delivers! The writing pulls you in, the tension keeps you hooked, and the romance? Chef’s kiss If you love protective, soft-for-her mafia men and heroines who fight to reclaim their strength Chasing Midnight is a must-read!

This book gave me Rapunzel meets Mafia vibes and I was hooked from the start.

Everleigh is an Italian Mafia princess locked away by her Don father at a young age. Groomed and sheltered to be the perfect wife-for-sale, her entire life has been controlled. When her father makes a deal with the devil, Everleigh refuses to accept her fate.

Keiran and Luca (Everleigh’s brother) swore a blood oath to be brothers when they were just 10 years old. To Keiran, Everleigh was the sunshine little sister of his blood brother and he would do anything to protect her.

Marriage was never in Keiran’s plans. After witnessing the cruelty in his own family, he vowed to never put a woman in that position. But when Everleigh’s life is put in mortal danger, he steps in and uses his name to shield her… and everything changes.

Ok let me start off by saying maybe I stayed up too late but this book was perfection. It had the perfect MMC while still having the sweet and caring FMC. While the FMC was quiet in the beginning you see her evolve and her inner badass come out. The MMC is loyal, merciless, and very protective to family. Between the two characters I like how you still see their nurturing side. It gives you a sweet slow burn making you want more. This is one of the best mafia romances I’ve read for quite sometime and I can’t wait for more from the mafia queen herself Mrs.Quyen!!!!🙏🏽💕💕💕👏🏽

Chasing Midnight is a dark, slow-burn mafia romance that masterfully blends heartbreak, healing, and love. Irish heir Kieran and Italian princess Everleigh are thrown together when Kieran marries her to save her from a brutal arranged match.

What starts as protection turns into a deep, emotional bond built on trust and respect. Everleigh’s journey from sheltered to strong is powerful, and Kieran’s patient, selfless love makes him a top-tier book boyfriend. Their slow-burn romance feels raw and real—proof that even in darkness, love can heal.

🤍Dark/mafia romance
✨Slow burn
🤍Forced proximity
✨Marriage of convenience
🤍Brother’s best friend

TLDR; slow, dark mafia romance between two mafia affiliated individuals and we witness the FMC’s healing and growth after a traumatic experience.

Chasing Midnight by Emerie Quyeyen is a slow burn dark mafia romance. It focuses on the relationship between Irish mafia heir Kieran and the Italian mafia princess Everleigh.

Their story unfolds when Kieran is enlisted by his best friend Luca to save his sister Everleigh from a ruthless, forced marriage with a Russian mafia leader. He proposes marrying Everleigh in order to keep her protected after they save her from her arranged marriage. After rescuing her, Kieran helped Everleigh slowly come back to life.

There is a lot of heartbreak and tremendous pain that Everleigh had to endure. She was sheltered for most of her life by her father and never really had the chance to experience life. She was written in such a beautiful way, because we got to experience her healing and growth after all the suffering she went through. She is incredibly strong and resilient despite all that she endured.

And Kieran. Don’t even get me started on him. He is truly a top tier book bf for sure. The way he loves and cares for Everleigh is unmatched. What I loved about their story was that their relationship was a slow burn, which is very different from the usual dark mafia romances I read. I truly appreciated how Kieran was always empowering Everleigh to make her own choices and feel proud of who she is. I enjoyed how they slowly fell for each other, because they were able to find peace, love, and healing in each other.

The Irish family, the Bratva, the Italian mafia!??? And one badass FMC who gets to find herself AND gets the boyish Irishman of her childhood? This book was incredibly well written and kept me coming back for more. The beginning is a little dark (as it SHOULD be), but the end gave me all the warm and fuzzies. I can’t wait to dive into the next book in this series!

We have Kieran, the son of the Irish mafia clan and Enforcer. I completely fell in love with him! He has that dark side but also a soft side for his family and friends. I loved all the different sides to him.
Next we have Everleigh, the daughter of the Italian Don. She's been sheltered her whole life and groomed to be a mafia wife. When she gets abducted by the Russian mafia, Kieran is the one to save her and nurture her back to health.
