Once upon a time, my whole life stretched out ahead of me, and it was perfect.
Then, tragedy struck.
Two years later, nothing about my life looks the way I thought it would, and I don't even know what home is anymore.
Until I cross paths with Jo Evans late one night, staring up at the stars.
With her signature pink sneakers and smile that could power the world, Jo is sunshine personified. When she ends up in my city for a few months, she insists that we are going to be summer friends and no amount of my grumpy resistance deters her.
I never expected to find love after such an enormous loss, but with one crazy summer adventure at a time, Jo helps me learn how to live. And slowly, I find myself wanting things I never thought would be mine again.
My grief runs deep, and I have scars that aren't so easily healed. But Jo sees me. She makes me feel like my battered heart may just be safe and that I can find the courage to think about forever.
Samantha Brinn (Sam to everyone who knows her) is an author of sweet, spicy, and swoony contemporary romance novels. A Pittsburgh girl currently living in the suburbs of NYC, Sam stole her first romance novel off of her mom’s bookshelf at age thirteen and has read pretty much nothing but romance ever since. Her Kindle is basically an extension of her hand at this point.
A lawyer by day and author by night, Sam can most often be found in bed with her laptop and writing desk late into the night, having the time of her life writing words and weaving stories and grinning at her characters’ hijinks.
Aside from being a reader and a writer, Sam is a lover of French fries, Reese’s peanut butter cups, and diet Pepsi, and much like her debut FMC, she rarely makes her coffee the same way twice. A mom of two, Sam cosplays as an organized human, but at her core, she’s mostly chaos and prefers it that way, and is loving every second of this wild indie author ride.
I picked up this book without any expectations—I didn’t even peek at the blurb! To my surprise, I absolutely loved it! Jordan and Jo's story is just everything. It was sweet, fun, heartwarming, and incredibly uplifting.
The story follows Jordan, who is still trying to find his way two years after losing his fiancée. He’s grumpy, shut off from the world, and keeps to himself, even changing his job and moving to New York. One day, he’s forced to spend a few days at his friend’s house, where he meets Jo. She happens to be the youngest sister of his best friend's wife. Jo knows that Jordan needs a friend, and when her job brings her to New York for the summer, she’s determined to make it an amazing experience for both of them!
I loved Jo! She’s so refreshing—spontaneous, adventurous, and lovely to be around. I found myself drawn to her right away. She’s smart, fun, and someone I’d want as a friend in real life! At first, Jordan tries to keep his distance, but Jo’s infectious energy and persistence start to warm him up. The adventures they share are a blast, and I enjoyed every moment!
Watching their friendship blossom into something deeper was truly heartwarming. I loved how they started off as friends and gradually grew into a romantic relationship. Jo understands Jordan so well, and it’s wonderful to see how they appreciate and accept each other just as they are. Their connection felt so natural, and by the time they reached their happy ending, my heart was so full!
The themes of friendship and family in this book were truly special. I loved how much support Jordan received from his friends and family. His interactions with his brothers were so entertaining, and I can't wait to dive into the next book in this series!
4.75⭐️ | 3🌶 After Jordan's ending in It's Always Been You, I knew I'd be an emotional train wreck with his book and boy was I?! Samantha just knows how to obliterate my emotions. I had no idea who Jo was before reading this book and i love that I didn't because finding out who she was just made the story more wholesome for me. I loved her. In fact I adored every single person in this beautiful book. Pam, Rob and all the Wyles'! The grief is extremely prevalent in this one so please check triggers. Samantha, I commend you for this beautifully bittersweet story. I cannot wait for the rest of the Boston Hearts. Thank you to Wordsmith Publicity for the arc.
During this extremely warm summer, I'm writing bite-sized reviews at best. As for this one, it's fine. No third-act breakup, no excessive drama, a cute story. Never reaches the level of Brinn's pervious series but I still enjoyed it. Just all that sex is a bit much. I like smut but if there's more smut than "I love you", my brain gets embarrassed.
♾️⭐️ I may never recover from Jordan and Jo but Sam healed my broken heart with this one! I was really worried about Jordan after It’s Always Been You but seeing him heal with Jo’s help was so beautiful! Jo is probably my favorite Sam FMC! She’s quirky and chaotic but she loves so fiercely. She is pure sunshine and I fell in love with her instantly. Jordan is so sweet but he went through something very tragic. Jo is the perfect person to bring him back to life and help him heal. Their friendship was so sweet and it was beautiful to see their feelings deepen over their summer adventures. Sam knocked it out of the park with this one! I loved how we got to see so many of the characters from the Laws of You series. The found family in these books is unmatched! I can’t wait to get to know more of the Wyles brothers.
Yours To Lose | Samantha Brinn | Boston Hearts series book 1 | 5•9•2025 ✨friends to lovers ✨summer romance ✨grumpy x sunshine ✨love after loss
This book was absolutely perfect. I wouldn't change a thing about it. THIS is how you write love after loss. I was up until the wee hours of the morning reading this because I couldn't put it down. I love this couple so much. I love all the family and friends. This was my first book I've read written by Samantha, but I will 1000% be going back and reading the series before this and I'm moving onto the next book in this series immediately.
𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬 𝐓𝐨 𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐞 vibes? 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 🦕Friends To Lovers 💞Grumpy/Sunshine 🦕Love After Loss 💞Summer Romance 🦕She Falls First 💞He Falls Harder
This book broke me, started putting me back together, broke me once more, and then healed me completely.
Okay but what if I told you that this book lives in my head rent free, all day everyday? Because it does!!
Love after loss is a HARD book to write, and even harder to sell your readers on, but Samantha absolutely nailed this!! Coming from someone who was (still is) Jordan and Allie’s BIGGEST fan, I wasn’t sold at first. But of course Samantha’s incredible writing sold me!! I love Jo and Jordan just as much!!!
One of my favorite things about this book is the way that Allie was not only written but how she was remembered, and the roll she played in Jordan and Jo’s relationship. It was just so incredibly beautiful!! You cannot commence me that Allie is not Jordan and Jo’s biggest fan and greatest supporter. Allie sent Jo to Jordan when he needed someone most.
Jo and Jordan’s relationship from friends to lovers was so fun, pure and genuine to watch unfold. The way that Jo and Jordan just were able to see each other so profoundly was breathtaking and beautiful!!
Jo is actual sunshine, always seeing the very best of everyone. And the best in every situation. The way that she not only helped Jordan honor and celebrate Allie but also encouraged him to always remember her in every situation 😭😭
Jordan my poor broken baby😭😭 it was an absolute honor and privilege watching you not just survive anymore, but LIVE!! My broken boy came out of this as a book boyfriend for the ages!!
Also can we talk about the world that Samantha has set up?!? Mama Pam??? The Wyles brothers??? WE ARE IN BOSTON BABBBY!!! 🙌🏻👏🏻
I’ll admit the love after loss/dead spouse troupe isn’t my go to (Lucy Scores pretend you’re mine still infuriates me years after I read it) you’re always left living in a throuple with a dead person. Jo was definitely left like this. I also hated how it started with Jordon & Allie together intimately. it gave me the ick & I couldn’t shake it off. Ruined the whole book doing that.
I am not sure if I could love this book anymore than I do. Sam, you broke my heart and then put it back together again. This is the absolute perfect love after loss story and I ADORED everything about it.
Jordan and Jo. Honestly, I don’t even know where to start. Jordan, you sweet sweet man. His growth during this book is truly beautiful and a lot of it is thanks to Jo. She is probably the coolest FMC I’ve ever read. She’s loud, quirky, fun and so damn lovable. She sees that Jordan needs a friend and she becomes just that for him. The two of them truly understand each other and allow each other to be themselves. Their relationship has such a strong foundation— they become best friends and then can’t deny the love that’s grown between them.
Their adventures that they take together are everything. Their little inside jokes and Dippy with his little scarves, my gosh IYKYK. Sam, your writing is incredible and addictive. Your creativity is something else and I cannot wait for the rest of this series!!
The way I loved this book is insane. I completely devoured it and it will absolutely live rent free in my mind for a LONG TIME. ♥️
What to expect: Friends to lovers Summer romance Grumpy x Sunshine Love after loss
Thank you so much Sam for the opportunity to read this as an ARC for my honest opinion and review!
note : mmc's fiancé and love of his life Allie tragically died 2 years ago, we got to see how much he loves her and how he crumbled after she died. i'm sorry but im not reading about him finding a second best after eading 4 books series where their friends always described them as soulmates, love of each other's lives and how his world ended when she died. it cheapens both what he had with Allie and makes this fmc second best
I knew going into this book that Jordan’s journey to happiness was going to put me through an emotional ringer, and it definitely did! Seeing his love for Allie throughout the Laws of You series was so dang special. After how that series ended I was seriously ready for some emotional healing! 🥹
Jo was such a fantastic FMC. I don’t think I’ve ever loved a sunshine lead more than I did this woman. Everything about her personality was so unique and I loved the way she sucked Jordan right into her orbit and gave him a safe place to become a new version of himself.
He was a man obsessed for sure. His chemistry with Jo was off the charts. This is a slow burn that turns absolutely SCORCHING after the 50% mark!
“𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘮𝘦 𝘣𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘢𝘥𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦?”
I feel like I need to give a special shoutout to Dippy the dinosaur because he is: 1. ICONIC 2. A huge factor is Jordan’s healing journey 3. A s pecial part the relationship between our leads!
🦕 Can we make shirts for Dippy?! Also, ‘free mugging it’ definitely needs to be made into all kinds of merch! 😂🫶🏼☕️
I loved this book so much, seriously I’m throwing all the stars at it! ♾️✨
We get to see all of our favorite couples from the first series and we get to meet a new band of brothers that has me BEYOND excited for the rest of the series!
If you love emotional reads full of healing, love and spice, please go add this one to your TBR today! Samantha Brinn delivered on such a fantastic reading experience!
To say thank you feels so small, Samantha was the first author to ever accept me for an ARC. To review her new series is incredible and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity 🥹
To start, Samantha, the prologue absolutely killed me 😭 I really didn’t know how I was going to find the whole “love after grief” trope but this was tasteful and written so well.
~ The “good” things ~ 🦖 Jo’s patience. She fought to make sure Jordan felt safe and that his feelings were respected. 🦖 This book was like one big therapy session. 🦖 Jo had the best personality of an FMC I’ve read in a romance. 🦖 To combat Jordan’s lack of exploration, Jo creates an immersive summer adventure around New York. 🦖 References to National Days (I’ve downloaded an app that tells you what national day it is… because who knew there was a national day for ice cream?!). 🦖 Jordan’s family were incredible and they embraced their boy no matter what. 🦖JORDANS. DIRTY. TALK. 😮💨 🦖 They had a dinosaur figurine named “Dippy” and Jordan embraced him like Dippy was his own child. 🦖 Dippy’s seasonally appropriate scarves 😭
~ The “not so good” things ~ 🦖 The amount of tears I shed. This book broke my heart. I know it was necessary for Jo and Jordan’s storyline but damn, Samantha. I felt like I was watching a greys anatomy episode 😭 🦖 There really isn’t anything to say here tbh. It is a slow burn and there are certain scenes that are repetitive but it’s forgivable.
The story is so feel good and heartwarming, you will cry and you will think “why the heck am I reading such a sad book”?! BUT it will also make you feel all gooey inside whilst simultaneously turning you on 🥲
~ Tropes ~ 💓Love after grief 💓Friends to lovers 💓Summer romance 💓 She falls first/he falls harder 💓Grumpy/sunshine
Thank you thank you thank you to Samantha Brinn for allowing me to read this as an ARC in return for my honest opinion 🥹😭💓
Yours to Lose follows Jo, an enthusiastic museum professional who dives into a summer of fun in New York, and Jordan, a broody and guarded man still healing from deep loss. The story captures their evolving friendship that slowly turns into something deeper during one unforgettable summer.
This was such a lovely read! I really enjoyed the dual POV: getting to see both Jo and Jordan’s thoughts made the story so much more interesting. Plus, the first-person perspective is my favorite, so that was a big win too.
The story just made my heart full. Jo and Jordan’s friends-to-lovers journey was sweet, fun, and full of those slow-burn moments I adore. Their connection felt real and authentic, and Jo’s “summer of fun” made me want to book a trip to NYC asap.
I also liked Jo’s background and her job at the museum, I only wish we’d seen a bit more of that after her move to NYC. Jordan also completely stole my heart. He’s been through so much, and watching him slowly open up to Jo was beautiful. And Dippy the dinosaur? Give him his own book, please.
The side characters were just as great. From Jordan’s brothers and Jo’s sisters to their friends and Jordan’s wonderful mom, they added so much charm to the story. And that scene where Jo leaves a message at Allie’s grave gave me instant tears.
If I had to mention one downside: the spicy scenes didn’t entirely work for me. I usually enjoy some steam, but here it felt a little out of sync with the characters.
All in all, I’m definitely picking up more from Samantha Brinn. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series and spend more time with these lovely characters.
Thanks to Wordsmith Publicity and the author for the ARC!
Trope - friends to lovers, age gap, best friends sister, love after loss, grief, found family, grumpy × sunshine, surgeon MMC, no third act breakup, close knit friendgroup, brother's shenangigans, romcom, slow burn, tear jerker, she falls first, he falls harder, second chance at love, steamy, HEA Bonus chapter - 1
What in the world was this book?! Grab your tissues, because this story will make you cry and heal you. I was expecting to find another book-boyfriend here, but instead, I found a book-girlfriend and a therapy session I didn't know I needed.
Jordan is grief-stricken after the tragic death of his fiancée. He has lost all hope and distanced himself from his loved ones. A trip back to the place where he lost everything brings him face-to-face with Jo, his best friend's sister-in-law— the woman who will heal him and make him fall head over heels in love.
JO APPRECIATION AHEAD!!! Jo, omg Jo, the woman you were. She was absolutely amazing. The best FMC to ever exist. She is patient, sweet, understanding, lovely, caring, selfless, smart, empathetic, and the epitome of sunshine.
When she sees Jordan suffering, she does what she does best: fills his dark world with light and love. Jordan needed a safe space to express his pain and grief openly, without being met with sympathy, and Jo provided exactly that. She allowed him to take his time to grieve, which was so healthy.
Jo was effortlessly herself, bringing an instant smile to everyone’s face, including mine. I loved her personality; she was the real definition of extroverted sunshine. I was ready to fight anyone who ever tried to dim her light.
LOVED how throughout the book she was so respectful of Allie and secure enough to acknowledge the fact that her man loved her before. Those moments when she visited and talked to her grave made me sad and content at the same time. I bawled my eyes out when
Jordan was guarded before Jo came into his life, but the man he became afterward was incredibly loving. The way he slowly healed and realized it was okay to love again filled my heart with joy. His journey was wholesome; it made me cry, smile, grieve, and also see things from a different perspective.
Their chemistry was so natural. The way Jordan was just existing and slowly healing by being around her with her, showed how much a little positive vibe can help a grieving person.
Jo needed someone who would see her, and accept her without asking her to be a little less, and Jordan was exactly that way. He not only accepted her quirks but loved her for them too. These two were soulmates, truly understanding each other and making each other's lives easier and better.
It was a slow burn, but once the spice hit, there was no turning back.
Jordan becoming absolutely obsessed with Jo was inevitable, but a heartwarming experience nonetheless. I don’t know what Jordan was like before her, but post-Jo, he was my favorite.
The playing around after they both realised their feelings for each other was so darn attractive; I was lowkey blushing. I loved how their first time was a mix of slow and fast, understanding and sweet, sexy and hot. Jordan had one dirty mouth, and damn, I was sweating. This guy knew what he wanted, and he took it like he owned it.
Reading their story and envisioning them falling in love slowly and gradually was the best feeling.
Side characters and plot - 1. The dynamic among the Wyles brothers was beautifully caring. With Elliot being mature, Noah funny, and Cooper observant, they all shared a common bond of love and care. Their goofy shenanigans and group chats were my absolute favourite. 2. I liked how the family and friends were all navigating Jordan's grief, providing support and understanding. understanding of him. 3. Jo's meeting with Jordan's family was hilarious; she couldn't have made a better entrance. 4. The sisterhood between Hallie, Hannah and Jo were so well written; it reminded me of my own. 5. Dippy was the main (and best) character, and no one can argue over that. 6. I loved how Jordan's parents resembled the older versions of Jo and Jordan. 7. J's Summer of Fun was absolutely the best. I filled my heart with so much warmth and love. ______________________
It broke my heart to see them in pain, but Jo was right in her place. Their love was deeper than words could express; it didn’t need to be stated. However, for things to progress, he had to be the one to take the first step and overcome his grief.
I loved what came after; their reunion was simply perfect, from the heartfelt confession to the spice that followed it.
Jordan finding his happiness in Jo was the best thing; she was everything he needed in his life to heal and be a better version of himself.
Each Wyles brother left me intrigued for their own stories. But because we got a better glimpse of Noah and Hannah, I can't wait to read about the golden retriever Wyles brother falling for the black cat, Evan’s sister.
The epilogue was sweet and wholesome. It had a little bit of everything, and the bonus chapter made me cry because imagining their wedding after everything that happened in this book was so emotional and calming.
ARC REVIEW 🩷 Yours to Lose by Samantha Brinn || Boston Hearts series book 1 || Releases 5.9.25
INFINITY STARS ♾️ ⭐️
If I never read another book for as long as I live, I’ll die happy knowing that this book exists and that I was able to know Jordan and Jo’s love story.
When I tell you that this book is everything good in this world, I mean it. It is joy and light and laughter. It is a journey of overcoming all-consuming grief through friendship, and learning to love again.
After Jordan loses his fiancée tragically, he becomes a shell of the person he once was. He is going through the motions, simply existing, until he begins to live again thanks to Jo.
Jo brings Jordan back with her zest for life and ability to make everyone smile just by being herself.
Despite the tragedy Jordan had to face in order to meet Jo, you cannot convince me that they weren’t soulmates. I think they always would have ended up together. Their love ran so deep.
THANK YOU SAM AND WORDSMITH PUBLICITY FOR THE EARLY RELEASE OF JORDAN AND JO!
First Samantha Brinn book did not disappoint. I was absolutely blown away by this story. I did not know what I was getting myself into. Didn’t read the blurb, nothing. So that prologue hit me right in the gut. If you haven’t dove into Samantha yet, start with the Laws of You series then it’ll be less of a shock for you starting Yours to Lose. But not any less heartbreaking for Jordan. Jordan has been going through the motions of everyday life for 2 years after a devastating loss. He moved, leaving his friends & family. Work, that he hates. A lonely apartment. Some sleeping & Repeat. After his friends kidnap him for a weekend, he runs into Sunshine herself, in her bright pink converse, Jo Evans. Jordan’s best friend’s sister in law. 👀
Jo finds herself in NYC for the summer for work and is determined to give Jordan the friend he needs for a summer of fun. ‘𝐉’𝐬 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐮𝐧’ to be exact. Full of food truck chicken fingers, late night scavenger hunt, movie nights with candy popcorn, a road trip, all the morning bagels and free muggin’ coffees. We can’t forget our cute little plastic dinosaur named Dippy who gets a daily scarf for every occasion you could think of. (Secretly Jordan loves because it makes Jo happy.)
They were just so easily themselves with each other and perfectly understood the other. Jo’s infectious joyful self sucked Jordan right in and allowed him to become the new version of himself. I loved her sisters. I loved his whole entire family. Especially his brothers and their chats! I’m excited for this whole series cause all these Wyles men are perfection. I mean we have a surgeon. Oral surgeon. Professor and a lawyer? Hello!
The slow burn was so perfectly worth it with these two, just to see the growth in the both of them along the way. Also, the mouth on Jordan? 🥵 Their story will have you laughing, swooning, crying and sweating!
This is my first Samantha Brinn book and I was not disappointed. I know now that Jordan is in one of Sam’s previous books and I’m assuming that the tragedy between him and Allie occurs in that book. I will be adding that to my TBR, because it doesn’t like to have their heartbroken? 😭😂
The book opens with a tragedy occurring in Jordan‘s life. We then flash forward two years later and Jordan has become a recluse. Everything has basically changed and Jordan has basically given up. One day he’s forced to visit his friends in a different state and he stumbles upon Jo. Jo is the sister of his best friend’s wife, and she just understands Jordan. Suddenly, everything is changing. Is Jordan ready for this change? Can Jo and Jordan keep their relationship purely friendly? The most importantly, where does Dippy keep getting all his scarfs?!
I’m absolutely in love this book.
Jo is someone that I absolutely want to be friends with. She seems like a joy and like she would be the best possible friend in the world. She is so dedicated to her craft her friends, her family and Jordan. She is so entirely selfless, where she’s able to put aside her needs to focus on what Jordan needs.
Jordan was like this sad little puppy dog, who I just wanted to hug almost immediately. It constantly crushed me that he had a rain cloud following him everywhere regardless of the fact that all of his loved ones were so witty and funny. It just goes to show that grief is a monster and it doesn’t care who it effects.
I loved not only watching their friendship grow, but also watching Jordan change and work through his grief thanks to an energetic woman in pink converse. And, if I thought their friendship was amazing to watch, their love story was even better. I was getting little butterflies reading about all the adventures they experienced.
One of my favorite things about this book was the banter. I have never highlighted so many text conversations in my life. Omg, I was dying of laughter. I cannot wait to read the next Wyles bro book.
This was my first Samantha Brinn novel and all I can say is, how have I waited so long to read her?! I absolutely LOVED this book and I can't wait to go back and read the Laws of You series and read about how all of Jordan's friends got their happily ever afters 💕
In Yours to Lose, we have Jordan, who lost his wife tragically two years prior and has been a shell of his former self as he tries to move forward in his life. He meets Jo, his friend's sister in law, who is determined to befriend him in spite of his guarded personality. When she moves to NYC for the summer, where he lives, she declares they have "the J's summer of fun" - and so their friendship begins.
This book was pure magic, just watching the chemistry between these two unfold. It was done with such care and grace, as Jordan is definitely still navigating grief. Jo is simply a good friend to him through and through, by showing up and being there for him, while also gently pushing him outside of his comfort zone. And the way he takes care of her when she's sick? Caretaking is my top micro-trope, so I was immediately a goner. And when the spice hits in this one, it hits HARD 🥵 These two were off the charts steamy.
This book quickly became a new favorite and I can't wait to see how all of the other Wyles brothers fall in love!
Read if you like: 💔 Love after loss 👩❤️💋👨 Friends to lovers 🩺 Caretaking ☀️ Summer Romance 💕 She falls first, He falls harder
Thank you so much to Samantha Brinn and Wordsmith Publicity for the advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.
All the stars....Infinity stars isn't even enough for this incredible journey this book took me on.
If you're like me and you were sleeping on Samantha Brinn then I am here to tell you to wake tf up!!!
I have to admit that I hadn't read the last series so that prologue was really shocking for me and I just knew Jordan's story was going to be heartbreakingly beautiful. Jo quickly became one of my very top FMCs with her sunshine spirit, zest for life and making people happy and just truly living her life out loud.
And Jordan...well this fine specimen is now a top MMC for me too. He was so broken, and then once he found that feeling of healing he couldn't even help falling if he wanted to. I have to go back and read the series before this so I can experience BJE (before Jo era) Jordan, but I truly loved the personality that Jo helped him heal into. And once she unleashed dirty talking J....watch out ladies!
Jordan and Jo's journey from friends(ish) to lovers was so pure and natural. What started out as a Jo's idea for a summer adventure helped to heal Jordan's heart in such an epic way. He was really just re-learning how to live life again after such tragedy kept him in the dark, and in doing her thing of living life to the fullest Jo shined her light on the broken bits of him and helped him be seen. She didn't try to bandaid over his tragedy, she helped him honor and celebrate his first love... and ugh I'm crying again.
The background characters have set us up for an amazing series. The Wyles brothers are truly so much fun, and their group text chats are top tier. The Evans sisters are a truly superior sisterhood and both sibling groups had me crying almost as much as our MCs did! The Wyles parents and even CeCe are characters I look forward to seeing more of in the future too!
♾️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️♾️
What to Expect: 🩷 Friends to Lovers 🦖 Grumpy/Sunshine 🩷 Healing from Grief 🦖 Summer Romance 🩷 She Falls First 🦖 He Falls Harder
This was my first book by this author so I may have been at a disadvantage not knowing the characters before hand.
Ultimately, I think the writing style was just not for me. The foundation of the love story, where this man who lost his fiancé and have shied away from his friends and family for treats seemed to open up and was drawn to the female main character a bit too easily without any tension considering the circumstances, which made it hard for me to buy into the whole story.
The writing style and dialogue was just a bit too verbose for my taste, and often found myself taken out of the story thinking- no one talks like that or that long! It felt like therapists practicing conversation. Although the concept was there, the execution of romance tropes felt forced to fit the story. The conflict of the story also felt a bit of a forced issue, I can understand it but it just felt a bit immature to me.
There were some moments that actually did engage me that I really did enjoy. The prologue where the story started off was engaging and well done to set the scene. The spice was also well done, although I got a bit of whiplash on who the character was in the bedroom vs who he was in everyday life.
Also random but this J summer of fun - every time it was mentioned (which was often) just had me hearing Janice from Friends announcing “Joey and Janice’s Day of Fun!”
Anyway, it seems perhaps I’m just not very compatible with this author in particular, but I know many loved it. If you have read her other books and enjoyed it, I’m sure this will be a continuation of a story you will love!
Samantha Brinn has done it again! Another 5 star book! Let’s start out by saying if you have ever lost someone you thought you would spend the rest of your life with, just know, someone is out there watching you. So don’t stop smiling because you never know who is falling in love with your beautiful personality and smile.
This is the first book in the Boston Hearts series. I appreciate how this book focuses on a male character, Jordan, dealing with the emotional journey of losing his fiancé Allie, who he thought he would spend the rest of his life with. It’s not until Jordan accepts a new position at a different hospital, in a different state, that he meets Jo. Jo is outgoing and likes to have fun. She is determined to be Jordan’s friend for the Summer and give him Jo’s “Summer of Fun Adventure” in New York. Can Jo accomplish this task? Or will the loss of Jordan’s fiancé be too much for him to see what plans is evolving?
This was such a beautiful story! I laughed, I cried, I squealed with excitement and couldn’t wait to see Jo and Jordan’s story unfold.
You have Jordan who is navigating grief and life after loss. Then there’s Jo who is moving to a new city for the summer. Jo decides to make it her mission to give Jordan a summer of fun and boy does she deliver! I loved the J’s Summer of Fun adventures so much! I was fully invested in both of them and seeing their friendship grow into more was beautiful! Jo is without a doubt my favorite FMC! She was unique and her sunshine personality made my heart so happy! She brings out the best in Jordan and watching him experience things he never thought he would again was so special.
There were so many moments I loved: the group chats, Dippy, movie nights, the first time meeting the family, free muggin, fireworks, stargazing, and fireball candies just to name a few!
Samantha knocked it out of the park with this book and I am very excited for what’s to come from the rest of Boston Hearts series. I highly recommend you read this book! You will feel everything in the best way!

Samantha is 10000% forgiven! My baby Jordan found himself and happiness again, and I was crying every other chapter. His story is one that I’ll never stop thinking about. And Jo Jo being the most selfless loving person, I adore this girl! I could not put this one down. I loved how real and raw this story felt. And the ending? No spoilers, but that ending and the way it all played out was perfect and honestly played into the realness of this story. Jordan was on his own journey, and Jo Never one pushed him. Their love was everything 🥹🤍
I just had so much fun reading this. The experiences and the summer fun was too cute. Also, I love Jordan’s brothers!! I cannot wait for more of this series!
Love After Loss, Friends to Lovers, Grumpy x Sunshine, Summer Romance, Age Gap, Found Family
After It’s Always Been You, I already knew I was going to be an emotional mess going into this. I can now confirm, yes I was a wreck and lost track of how many times I cried. Jordan was so lost and broken after Allie, but seeing him heal through his relationship with Jo was so special. Sam did an amazing job giving us a true friends to lovers relationship. My heart broke so many times throughout the book, but their friendship and love put it back together. I literally can’t think of any more words to express how much I loved this book and I look forward to the rest of the Boston Hearts series ❤️
Thank you so much to Wordsmith Publicity and Samantha for the arc💕
Wow, I felt every single emotion under the sun while reading this beautiful book. I could not put it down.
The entire time I was reading this, I had a permanent smile etched upon my face. It was beautiful, sweet, and the perfect amount of emotional. I cried, laughed, smiled, all of it.
I am so happy I read Jordan and Jo's story because it evoked so much feeling in my heart.
The themes of grief, healing, and love were beautifully done and I will not be forgetting this one at all.
This is such a special book and special characters. I cannot wait to read the rest of the books in the amazing series.
Jordan had lost his fiance, and he was still having a tough time dealing with that loss. Jordan had family and friends who were always there for him, but he was still a shadow of himself. Jo was such an enjoyable character. Her heart and energy were infectious, and I loved her. Jo was the perfect character to help Jordan find some of his old self.
Samantha wrote a book that didn't disappoint. It was well written, had characters that stood out, and I fell in love with their journey, and the plot was excellent.
i guess i can officially forgive sam for destroying me with her last book because this book was in fact so perfectly done. jo and jordan (and dippy!!!) are perfect and i had so much fun reading their story. sam gave jordan such a beautiful second chance and jo fit into it so perfectly, i loved getting to really know her finally. i miss pittsburg already but i’m so excited to get to see what happens in boston! thank you sam & wordsmith for the arc!!!!
I will be honest, I was absolutely terrified how this story was going to go after what happened in Book 4 of The Laws of You series. As Samantha promised Jordan did get his happily ever after.
Samantha did an amazing job portraying Jordan's grief after we fast forward 2 years from his fiancee's death. As Jordan explains it best, Jo came in like a hurricane and captured his attention & heart. Jo is truly the sunshine to Jordan's grump. As their friendship flourished, their mutual pinning for each other became VERY obvious to everyone, but them. I loved their genuine connection and how things just felt easy for them. Jordan didn't have to put a mask on & Jo didn't have to try to be someone she wasn't.
The slow burn for this book was very necessary!! As their friendship turned into more, it was like fireworks. Hot & explosive. Jordan's mouth was so freaking hot.
I am so happy Jordan got his HEA with someone like Jo!
