My Life used to be great. I was happy, full of energy, and most importantly, loved. From the day I was born, my family were everything to me: until tragedy struck. Since losing them, I don’t love and I don’t trust; that way, I don’t get hurt. My breath left my body on a soul-changing gasp when I encountered him, and it’s yet to stabilize. In him, I have found the glue to mend my broken heart; he makes me feel complete. There is no doubt I love him, trust him and know he won’t ever intentionally hurt me. Now, I could lose him. I could lose everything. And this time, I know I will struggle to recover. Welcome to the battle for my life.
LUCAS CASTLE:
I work hard. It’s the only life I know. I care about my family, but no one else. Certainly, there are women, but I don’t do love or commitment, and I definitely don’t believe in ‘the one’. My world tilted on its axis when it happened, when this girl came crashing into my world, changing my life for the better and making me undoubtedly aware that my life would never be the same again. I’ve fallen in love and want commitment because I have met ‘the one’. My life is now complete. Unfortunately, with a tragic twist of fate, I could lose her—my everything—but I will never give up, not without a fight. Welcome to the fight of my life.
Book Review - The Vine by C A Ellis - 3.5 ‘the beginning is far too sickly sweet for me but romance fans will love it’ stars
I struggle with hearts and flowers romance, it doesn’t speak to me. And therefore for the first 20% of this book, I really struggled to read the story.
Lizzy and Luke meet and feel the sparks immediately, but for Luke from the beginning he knows it’s something different, so he takes his time, working up to asking Lizzy out, and then he courts her in the old fashioned way, until they eventually fall into bed and into love.
As well as the flowery language used around Lizzy’s scenes, it was also repeated in Luke’s POV and it didn’t ring authentically male to me. My other problem with the dual POV at the beginning was that they were not different enough from each other, so it felt a little like reading the same text again.
However, up to this point, we only really have my own dislike of sloppy romance to contend with. Romance fans out there, you will be in your element.
Anyone like me, stick with it, because there is a big event not long after this, which changes the story, and the tone changed for me also. From this point on, I was fully invested waiting to see what happened between the two, and all of the other players that come into the story.
The story evolves and becomes about more than a love story of two people. You can analyse the effects grief has on people and what extreme behaviour that might cause in somebody. You can also see how people can hide behind a disguise.
We move country and I love the side characters that we meet out there. In particular, Lizzy’s hairdresser and new BFF Stef is a delight to read.
It very much felt like a book of two parts to me. If it had started in the way it finished, with a pacy story with mystery and suspense, I would have probably rated it a 4 star read. If it had carried on in the overly romantic way it started, I would have probably given up the ghost and left it unrated or finished it and rated it as a 2 star read, as that type of book is not for me. This isn’t a reflection on the authors writing at all, just the style. Kelly Elliott is one of the biggest romance writers out there but I rated her book Broken 2 stars, as that style is not for me. So if you love Kelly Elliott, I reckon you should give this book a whirl as I think you will love it also.
The next book Carol is due to write centres around rocker Jett and I really hope she writes him as the tattooed bad boy I really want him to be. Give me a bit of grit with a hint of hearts and flowers and i’ll be a happy girl.
I have literally just finished reading the epilogue to this debut novel by CA Ellis and am left with a feeling of satisfaction with the ending but also an empty feeling that their story is now over!
Elizabeth (Lizzy) Maynard has not had an easy transition into adulthood. Losing her family at a young age has damaged her and caused her to withdraw into herself and build seemingly impenetrable walls around her heart to protect herself. She knows she won't survive loss so prevents that from happening by remaining detached and aloof. Until she meets him.
Lucas Castle, for all intents and purposes is cold with a hard shell around him that no one has been able to crack no matter how gorgeous or seemingly perfect they are. He lives for his career and is the ultimate professional in every aspect of his life. Elizabeth, quite literally, bumps into his organised and lonely life and shakes him the hell up!
This is where our story starts. With Lucas' realisation of what true love is and how it can alter a man and Lizzy's acceptance that no matter what she does her walls have been knocked down by this person - her 'beautiful man.'
For me, their relationship was one big wet sloppy kiss until the unimaginable happens. *PLOT TWIST* (Don't worry, no spoilers here!) But this does set in action a chain of events that keep you turning the pages, lost in their world and completely entwined in the vines of their stories. There are teary, emotional moments; there are laugh out loud moments and there are outright heart wrenching moments where you need to take a break from the book to only return 30 seconds later because you simply need to know what is going to happen next!
CA Ellis' writing completely comes into its own and I found myself lost in the book almost wishing I could be there right next to Lizzy and Lucas. The scenes are set beautifully and the multiple POVs (although mainly from Lucas and Lizzy's perspectives) give the story that much more definition. I adored getting inside the minds of the two main characters as well as those of Lizzy's BFF, Katy, and Lucas' ex, Saskia.
I am excited to read more of the story of another side character, Jett, in his story next year! Thank you CA for a beautiful love story full of emotion, depth of feeling and a handful of the soppy love stuff! I am proud to call you a friend. <3 xxx
The Vine is a complex and emotional journey of the heart. A story of love, loss, self-discovery and friendship. A must-read for romance fans. ~ Kelly, Perusing Princesses
The Vine is the story of Lizzy Maynard and Lucas Castle. Two successful singletons who have never felt the need for commitment, yet their worlds collide one day when they least expect it.
Lizzy is still feeling the grief and loss of her parents passing after a fatal car accident took their life when she was only 22. Being an only child her support came in the form of her feisty best friend Katy, a rising rock star, Jett and George, her boss and protective Father figure.
Now working with George as his PA, Lizzy starts getting back to some form of normality but she is aware that her life consists of work and not much else.
Lucas Castle is a successful businessman and renowned batchelor. He is handsome, rich and currently without a 'convenient' lover since he caught his ex, Saskia playing a field of her own.
Lizzy and Lucas collide in the workplace, which sets their fated journey in motion.
A love so passionate and beautiful ensues, and they both succumb to the knowledge that for the first time ever, they have both found love.
But what happens with tragedy strikes twice? Lizzy is left bereft, broken and confused. To lose something so powerful is inconceivable as she makes the decision to change everything about her life.
Running away to Verona offers a new home, new friends and even a new name. She is a walking lie, her smiles artificial, her mind in the moment, but her heart back home in London where it rightly belongs.
Living a lie can come with its own set of consequences, and when a face from Lucas' past comes knocking, Lizzy must face her demons and believe that what she has is still worth fighting for...
The Vine is certainly a story of two-parts. The first is a heartwarming love story of two people who fall irrevocably in love and even though it holds elements of 'sappy' it really is a beautiful thing to behold. Lucas Castle is swoonworthy with the ability to get your panties in a twist.
Lizzy is very insecure. She may be naturally beautiful but she is numb. Her parents death has affected her deeply, and Luke becomes her light as she gradually escapes from her pit of despair.
Then... BAM! Everything about this story gets turned on its head as Lizzy starts a new life in Verona. Without giving too much away, this is where Lizzy finds herself amidst a spoken lie. Sometimes to become someone else, you find out who you really are in the process...
I very much enjoyed this story, although there were parts where the narrative is lengthy and dialogue sparce. Some aspects needed to be elaborated on while others cut short but overall this is a fascinating story that had me experiencing many mixed emotions that made for an entertaining and pleasant read.
I loved the feisty best friend Katy, and Jett is one kind and hot rock star and I'm looking forward to reading his story next.
Beautiful story with hot men. Sadness, angst, romance. Tears in buckets. Lucas is a dreamy sext man, Lizzy is his from the moment he bumps into her but it's a rocky road the have to take.
I really enjoyed this book. It begins in dual POV (but then does go multi POV at times) and in the first couple of chapters I felt that the overlapping of the story was making it a bit repetitive but I am absolutely delighted that I carried on reading because I then discovered that I couldn't put my kindle down. I loved the characters; I found the the story plot kept my interest and was a real page turner; I enjoyed the twists in the story and also the emotional side of the book. A great read that I would recommend.
This book caught my attention from the beginning, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. If you enjoy romantic fiction you will love this book. I couldn't put it down. Roll on the second in the series Jetson ... now where did I put my glasses hmmm......:)
This is a story of Lizzy, a girl everyone would want as a friend. Sweet, caring, genuine and just a lovely girl. This is a story that takes you on a beautiful love story as well as adding a sprinkle of sadness, a cup of sexy and a whole bucketful of the forever kind of love. A girl who has already experienced loss, pain and grief and a man who she had no idea would completely turn her world around and make her dreams come true.
“As I was staring into space, I saw something move in my peripheral vision and it startled me slightly, bringing me out of my daydream. I looked down to Lucas' hand; his forefinger is pressed down onto the table and he's pushing it forward to me. I looked, confused by his hand, to his eyes, and then back to his hand. Then he lifted his finger and I saw a penny. My eyes looked back to his, confusion still written in them, when I heard him say with a gentle smile on his lips, “A penny for them.” “Sorry?” I asked, not understanding at all. “A penny for your thoughts,” he clarified.I smiled in realisation, and after a few moments of silence, I could see I had lost him to his own thoughts, although by the smile on his face, they must've been good ones. I slid the penny back over to him, and the noise must have attracted his attention as I saw him look at my finger. I lifted it slightly so he could see the penny. I saw his gaze slowly move from my finger, up my arm and to my face. When he found me giggling, he threw his head back laughing at how he was now being the one caught out.”
OH MY! LADIES, WE HAVE A NEW GUY ON THE BLOCK! Lucas Castle, swoony, panty melting, hump my kindle, romantic, charming.......need me to continue....No? I didn't think so.
This guy is the definition of BEAUTIFUL MAN. He is absolutely smitten with Lizzy from their first encounter and stops at nothing to make her his girl. They are already set out with something against them, but they let nothing stop them making this relationship work.
The story is full of romance and is maybe a book you ladies should purchase for your men, telling them you want your own 'LUCAS FREAKING CASTLE' so maybe the men can get a few pointers from him, this guy, seriously, you will want one. I do not want to put any spoilers in this review because it is an experience everyone should encounter for themselves. The Vine is a beautiful story and makes you feel that fighting for love, is the right thing to do.
This is a superb debut novel by a fellow Brit babe! I am excited for more from this author and wish Carol every success in the book world!
This book had me hooked from the beginning, but my only worry was that it was all going too well!! I kept thinking to myself: “Wait for it, wait for it!” Then, BAM!, about a third of the way through, the author hit me right between the eyes and I was left reeling, wondering where we went from here.
Four years after the death of her parents, 26-year-old Lizzy Maynard is still emotionally vulnerable and striving to make a life for herself without the weight of her guilt bringing her down. Working as a PA, she crosses paths with the electrifying 38-year-old Lucas Castle.
Lucas is your quintessential Alpha male. He always gets what he wants, be it in his work or private life. And what he wants is Lizzy.
I loved watching as Lizzy opens herself up to Lucas as the reformed playboy shows her how special she is:
“I love the way you look at me. I love the things you say to me. I love the way you touch me, and the way you always make me feel so special.”
Yet the path of true love never runs smooth. I don’t want to give too much away here as it would ruin your BAM! moment, but suffice it to say that I was left questioning if they would ever get their HEA.
But as Lucas succinctly says:
“Don’t you understand? You own me.”
Throw in Lizzy’s feisty & sassy best friend, Katy, bad boy rockers, Lucas’s incorrigible brothers, a host of amazing secondary characters ~*coughs* Stefano~, and the beautiful city of Verona, and you know you’ve got an engrossing read!
The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was Lucas was a bit too sappy for me at times and certain points didn’t flow for me but I can’t wait to hear from these characters.
Note: Copy kindly received from author in exchange for an honest review.
To put this book into words I would describe them as perfect, emotional, inspiring and devoting
Wow just wow
I had the honour of meeting C.A Ellis at the book signing and never having heard of her before came home and brought the vine and I have not been disappointed in the least.
The fantastic flow of this is absolutely beautiful and I promise you will cry ugly tears iv had my moments but how you are gripped with emotion is just beautifully written.
You have just for to love the castle brothers each with there own character the vine consontrates on Lucas who is the eldest brother and his life and social appereance in the media and how he is seen. That's until he meets Elizabeth and his world is turned upside down and the story flows from there.
A full 5* read and I am now going on to read jetson
Lucas and Lizzy!! Great leading characters, great secondary characters too! This is a fab fuck tastic debut novel from carol, I am so pleased that I got to read it! There is love, heartache, misery and joy. Also what love story is complete without a psycho ex trying to win back the affections of her former love!! Well saskia is the ex from hell! Stefano is the cute gay guy friend, Katy is the loud show off and then there's jett, the hot rock star buddy of Lizzy and Katy, his story is coming next in 'Jetson', that one will be adorning my kindle when released :) great job honey, keep writing cos I love your style xxx
This story started very sweet romance and dare i say it took me as almost sickly sweet. But as sickly sweet romance is not my thing i persevered and there was a major plot twist that shook this book up for me and then i could not put it down. I will not say what this twist is but it changes things a great deal. Lizzy is a woman who has had a great loss in her life and Lucas is the one to help her even though he has a gruff exterior shell that needs looking under. This book surprised me after initially starting reading i was a bit dubious but it improved greatly and i like the big twist and how the book changed to accommodate this revelation. A worth debut for reading
I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. There were a few surprises thrown in for good measure but I couldn’t fault this book in the slightest. I loved the characters and the story line and loved watching everything unfold.
This was my first C.A. Ellis book and I can’t wait to read more from her. A well deserved 5 stars.
If you are looking for a writer with a fresh voice I highly recommend reading CA Ellis. The Vine is a book about a girl who loses everything but then finds love. A man who falls in love with her. With out throwing in any spoilers... I will just ask you to read it.
I loved every second of this book. Even tho i sobbed my heart out to the point i couldn't see my kindle. It had me hooked all the way through. I can defiantly see myself reading it again soon.
I saw this book with extremely high ratings and I felt, so I gave it a four. However, its actually a 3.5.
To be honest, I was looking forward to this book so much. You don't even know. I don't know if its because I don't feel like reading or its just the book, I really hope it was just because I don't feel like reading. I read the first 20 chapter, and then skimmed for a little while until I felt like reading again. The age difference was really big in my opinion, but I guess its okay since I felt like they acted around the same age, and constantly wanting to f***each other. Not that I'm saying the sex scenes weren't hot or anything, which they were steaming hot.
So, this Saskia chic got on my nerves! Like, why?? Why do these stories always have that ex girlfriend who tries to get their ex-boyfriends back and tries to break up a relationship when they are happily loving another person. She was a total Bitc*! I really hate saying that, but it was necessary.
Lizzy is adorable! She thinks things through, maybe not as much as I would like her too, but she does use that pretty head of hers. I love her relationship with the people around her; Katy, Lucas, Stefano, Jett, and George. I feel like they love and only want the best for her ever since that awful accident. And I find jealousy rising up in my heart from all that attention. Weird, huh?
This was the perfect definition of insta-love. Lizzy literally bumps into Lucas and he fell head over heels for this woman. However, he didn't jump right in to ask her out or anything. He took the cautious warning his brother gave him, he slowly inched his foot into the door that she shut tight. The courting in this book was cute. I love how he got nervous asking her to let him take her out, even though everyone knows that he doesn't even have to try to pick up girls.
Overall, it's a fun book to read, well the parts I read anyways....
There was a lot of back and forth on my feelings for this book, settling in at 3 stars. As mentioned by other readers, this book was slow to start - I almost put it down, but enough comments that things change after about 20% kept me reading. And they were right - boy, what a heart breaking change. I was fighting tears and gripped to my kindle! But, the last 30% of the book became a bit too unbelievable for me, with situations seemingly blatantly set up for the most drama.
This is my debut and I'm so proud what these characters brought to the table. Lucas and Lizzy have an incredible story to tell. Your heart will break at time, at others you will be brought to tears, sometimes through sadness and sometimes through laughter. As I hope will always be a feature of my writing, back ground characters will be brought to the forefront with their incredible personalities. Jett (who now has his own book), Katy (who will be most definitely getting her own book), Luca, Cole and my darling Stef. Read, enjoy and find yourself Entwined in the Vine:o)
