Jag är en varulvsunge

PS

I read this book in its original swedish edition when I was a kid, and I borrowed it from the library many many times. I loved both the story and the fantastic original illustrations by Hans Arnold (not featured on this cover, which is rather ugly in my opinion).
I recently bought the book in a used book store and really found it as good as when I was 10 years old. My kids (age 13 and 15, they still want me to read for them in the evening) loved it too.
The book is set in a swedish working class environment of the 60s with a big finnish workforce immigration, which you can see often in children's books and swedish kids programs at this time. They often feature finnish friends and characters, and some finnish dialogue etc (this book has a small finnish dictionary so that you can check what Ulfs best friend Jaako say to his mother etc, but this is also explained in-text).

The narrative is about Ulf facing problems that his werewolf persona creates for him. The narration is very witty and a bit absurd, when his naïve and self-centered inner dialogue contrast with what's actually happening around him. Excellent pacing and a very clear narrative. Being a werewolf cub is hard when you have annoying sisters, problems at school and stressed out parents. Or is he really a werewolf? Perhaps it's only puberty, Ulf.

I've read the Finnish translation of the book, Olen oikea ihmissusi. A schoolboy turns into a werewolf and homespun madness ensues. A brilliant story in my opinion, suitable for also grownups who appreciate dark humour.

Lapsuudestani muistan hyvin elävästi ruotsalaisen Gunnel Linden romaanin "Olen oikea ihmissusi" (WSOY, 1974).

Käsiin lässähtävän juonen lisäksi romaanin kieli on köyhää, päälausetta päälauseen perään.

Ihan susi kirjaksi. Silkkaa ajanhukkaa. Grr.
