About the author

Seishi Yokomizo (横溝 正史) was a novelist in Shōwa period Japan.
Yokomizo was born in the city of Kobe, Hyōgo (兵庫県 神戸市). He read detective stories as a boy and in 1921, while employed by the Daiichi Bank, published his first story in the popular magazine "Shin Seinen" (新青年[New Youth]). He graduated from Osaka Pharmaceutical College (currently part of Osaka University) with a degree in pharmacy, and initially intended to take over his family's drug store even though sceptical of the contemporary ahistorical attitude towards drugs. However, drawn by his interest in literature, and the encouragement of Edogawa Rampo (江戸川 乱歩), he went to Tokyo instead, where he was hired by the Hakubunkan publishing company in 1926. After serving as editor in chief of several magazines, he resigned in 1932 to devote himself full-time to writing.
Yokomizo was attracted to the literary genre of historical fiction, especially that of the historical detective novel. In July 1934, while resting in the mountains of Nagano to recuperate from tuberculosis, he completed his first novel "Onibi" (『鬼火』), which was published in 1935, although parts were immediately censored by the authorities. Undeterred, Yokomizo followed on his early success with a second novel Ningyo Sashichi torimonocho (1938–1939). However, during World War II, he faced difficulties in getting his works published due to the wartime conditions, and was in severe economic difficulties. The lack of Streptomycin and other antibiotics also meant that his tuberculosis could not be properly treated, and he joked with friends that it was a race to see whether he would die of disease or of starvation.
However, soon after the end of World War II, his works received wide recognition and he developed an enormous fan following. He published many works via Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine in serialized form, concentrating only on popular mystery novels, based on the orthodox western detective story format, starting with "Honjin Satsujin Jiken" (『本陣殺人事件』) and "Chōchō Satsujin Jinken" (『蝶々殺人事件』) (both in 1946). His works became the model for postwar Japanese mystery writing. He was also often called the "Japanese John Dickson Carr" after the writer whom he admired.
Yokomizo is most well known for creating the private detective character Kosuke Kindaichi (金田一 耕助). Many of his works have been made into movies.
Yokomizo died of colon cancer in 1981. His grave is at the Seishun-en cemetery in Kawasaki, Kanagawa (神奈川県 川崎市).

The House of Hanging On the Hospital Slope vol. 1 is one of the later Kendaichi mysteries and supposedly the detective's last case(?)

Premise: At the beginning of the novel, we are introduced to the twisted family history of the two main families in the story, there are plenty of the post-WWII social issues being mentioned. The main story takes place in one night, a photographer is summoned to an abandoned mansion, a bride and a bridegroom are waiting to have their wedding photos taken, but why would a newlywed couple wish to spend their wedding night alone in the ruin of an abandoned mansion which was burnt down during the War, rumored to be haunted, plus a few years ago a woman was known to hang herself in this very house?

Meanwhile, Kendaichi was hired by the female family leader of a rich and power family to search for her missing granddaughter, is this missing person case related with the strange wedding in the abandoned mansion?

Then shortly afterward, the photographer is summoned to the same abandoned mansion again, and this time a horrible discovery awaits him...

It is one of the better written and better plotted Kendaichi murder mysteries, the plot is a bit on the melodrama side but what has taken place in the story does make sense so my reading experience is positive.

The murder mystery can be a bit overly complicated to read but I like how every aspect of the crime investigation is presented to us, every suspect is also introduced to us so we can try to figure out what those people are really up to.

However, the main plot twist can be a bit too obvious when there are two young women (who aren't sisters) who look exactly the same, mistaken identity is just unavoidable. LOL

Move on to read vol. 2!!!

สมกับที่เก็บไว้เป็นเล่มสุดท้าย ปริศนาในเล่มนี้ซับซ้อน และเดินเรื่องได้อย่างสนุกสนาน แม้ช่วงแรกจะดูเหมือนตัวละครเยอะจนจำไม่ไหว แต่อ่าน ๆ ไปจะพบความสัมพันธ์ที่สมเหตุสมผลกับเนื้อเรื่องพอสมควร (เดาว่าน่าจะชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้นในเล่มหลัง) ชอบเล่มนี้อยู่สามจุดหลัก ๆ คือ 1) เรื่องยาวมาก แต่เขียนกระชับจนรู้สึกว่าพอดี ไม่สั้นไม่ยาวเกินไป 2) มีความเป็นธรรมชาติของตัวละคร มากกว่าเล่มที่ผ่านมา เช่น ให้ตัวละครเผยสำเนียงท้องถิ่นหรือบ้านเกิดออกมาบ้าง เป็นต้น 3) สามารถเขียนให้จบแบบคลุมเครือ ทิ้งปริศนาไว้ต่อเล่มหน้าได้อย่างแนบเนียน ส่วนที่คาใจเรียกร้องให้ตามอ่านต่อ แต่ไม่บังคับหักหาญว่าต้องอ่านให้ได้เดี๋ยวนั้น เราว่ามันยากกว่าการหักมุมทิ้งท้ายให้ตามอ่านทันทีเสียอีก

ปีนี้น่าจะอ่านหนังสือชุดนี้จบอย่างสบายใจได้เสียที

หมดวันหยุดพร้อมกับสองเล่มนี้(ต่อเนื่องกัน) 'คินดะอิจิ ตอน กระดิ่งลมหัวคน' สารภาพว่าอ่านปฐมบทมาหลายเดือนแล้ว มึนไทม์ไลน์ในเรื่องมาก อ่านไม่จบสักที... แต่ก็อ่านจบมาตั้งแต่เมื่อคืน...พอมาต่อปัจฉิมบทวางไม่ลงเลยจ้า
ปกติไม่เก็บหนังสือคินดะอิจินะ เพราะมีหลายเล่มเกิน.. ถ้าเริ่มเก็บนี่ต้องตามหาจากหนังสือมือสองอย่างเดียวล่ะ แต่ก็อ่านเล่มดังๆคดีหนุกๆอยู่ พอรู้ว่า #talent1 ตีพิมพ์ตอนสุดท้ายเลยคิดว่า เก็บไว้ดีกว่า
สำหรับตอนนี้ สมเป็นคดีที่เอามาปิดฉากจริงๆมีความซับซ้อน ความยาวนาน(ยี่สิบปี!) มีความโหด มีความสะเทือนใจ แต่ก็คิดว่าเรื่องคุณยายยาโยอินี่มันยังไม่สุด...

ชอบบบบบ ไม่มีตรงไหนที่น่าเบื่อ ทุกอย่างน่าติดตาม ผูกเรื่องดี แถมทิ้งปริศนาก่อนไปปัจฉิมบทอีก รออ่านไม่ไหวแล้วววว

Why am I rereading this...I mean it's more interesting if it's read as a depiction of 昭和‘s social world and psychic decay and unrest.
