She's ready to give up on life, hiding her depression with sarcasm and booze. He's got a secret and quit college, with few friends to lean on. When they discover each other, the sexual attraction is undeniable. So why does it seem impossible for them to be together?
Everyone wanted to be Jewels Peterson in high school. Naturally beautiful, exceptionally smart, talented cheerleader, life of the party, and with an All-American boyfriend to boot. One regrettable choice and fatal accident later, and Jewels found herself unceremoniously knocked off her pedestal. Now she’s in college, going through the motions, but not really living.
Adam Murphy is easy-going, charming, considerate, and crazy good looking; he’s exactly the kind of guy Jewels pictures herself being happy with. But Jewels is already involved with someone, and Adam makes it known that he’s guarding a dark secret, one that makes him the wrong guy for her. Trumped by the promise of an innocent friendship, Jewels is forced to ignore her overwhelming hunger for Adam.
After Jewels unknowingly helps Adam create a bucket list, they embark on the adventure of a lifetime that pushes their platonic relationship to its limits. But does she want to be with Adam without knowing the truth behind the skeletons in his closet, or is being with him just another pointless thing in her life?
Jennifer Ann is an award-winning author of contemporary romance and romantic suspense with darkly complex plots. An avid fan of the beach, a good book, and Dave Grohl, she enjoys spending her free time with her favorite people and biggest fans--her husband and children.
Jennifer also writes thriller/mysteries as Quinn Avery.
I feel like I’m in a book slump right now. I crave a good romantic read and nothing, nothing I’ve read in the past few weeks classifies as a Good Romantic Read.
Sadly, Adam’s List is just another book that’s left me hanging in there.
The writing in this book is good. I liked the author’s writing and I can honestly believe that she tried her level best but it just didn’t work for me. Here’s why:
I didn’t like Jewels. If you read the premise of the story then you know that Adam’s List is about a road-trip of a lifetime. For me though…it wasn’t. It was very meh, and most of the time the meh-ness was because of Jewels. She had issues of her own but she was way too dramatic and whiney for me. And she agreed to go on a road-trip with a guy she’s not known for very long. And why did she agree? Because he did something good for her, she got infatuated and they kissed.
I’d say Adam was the only character I was rooting for in the entire book. And sometimes even he got on my nerves. He was portrayed as way too uptight, way too mysterious for a guy his age. I thought maybe that could be because of the “secret” that he was hiding but gah, it just doesn’t feel right. Either you live your life happy, or you don’t.
It was sad to witness and absolute torture to read.
And his big secret? Yeah, I could guess. It became pretty obvious to me about 35% into the book so yeah. There’s that. I don’t know what tipped me off and I do not know why I just knew it, but I did. And when I was proved right, pfft. I honestly wanted to stop reading.
Adam Murphy has a problem. He’s a bit fucked in the head.
Okay, he’s a lot fucked in the head. I’m not going to say anymore—lest I give out spoilers—but there’s one thing I know for certain in life. Ask for help when there’s even the slightest chance you can get it.
It’s not going to hurt you, to ask for help.
This was kind of a typical NA/YA read when it came to the parents. At least in Adam’s case, they were almost non-existent.
All in all, I wouldn’t recommend this book. It’s been a waste of precious time (and energy) for me.
Adam's List is fascinating and stirring at the same time, with focus on love and survival. Jewels Peterson was battling depression after an unfortunate event happened to her boyfriend. For Jewels, she can only survive by taking drugs to conquer her inner demons. Adam Murphy came along one night while she was drinking booze and her bestfriend was nowhere to be found. A few conversations later, the two strangers ventured on a road trip that would fulfill Adam's bucket list. A mission Jewels would want to accomplish while making sure she won't fall for this brooding sexy guy.
The only thing I wasn’t crazy about in the story though was Jewel’s previous involvement to a man who was only after sex and already got a kid of his own. Then broke up with him and stil had liasons with him out of the blue. Her life was messed up. Not really feeling her at that time. But the change in her perspective after spending a few days and nights with Adam has taken a toll on her when Adam decided to give up instead. It was unraveling.
Honestly, I've been reading a lot of books that tackle depression and anxiety disorders, and I am always overwhelmed by the intensity of this condition. Everytime I read this kind of story, it makes me think about life in general. Learning upon Adam’s rare condition & Jewels constant struggles with her depressed state almost had me weakened and crestfallen. When Adam was absolutely dead set on the idea of never falling in love with anyone because his number is already up, it made me think of the other people who are losing hope in their lives. It must have been really nerve-wracking and tiring.
While I wasn't sure about Jewels' personality, I liked the execution as well as the growth of the characters as the story progressed. Eventually, it made me weep and contemplate about life. I look forward to reading more of Jennifer Ann's book soon.
Adam's List is the first book by new Adult Romance Novelist Jennifer Ann and it delivers in the romance department!
This book kept me reading from beginning to end and I was never bored.
Jennifer Ann does a great job creating realistic characters that you easily relate to and become attached. I was rooting for Jewels and Adam the whole time.
I was able to laugh, cry, be angry and many more emotions throughout the entire book!
Super excited for whatever Jennifer Ann comes up with next, hopefully a sequel!

It's been a while since I read a NA book so when the opportunity to review one presented it self, I jumped on the ship.
Adam's List was an interesting story, despite some of it's problems. Adam and Jewel are two damaged people who meet at a college party and become unlikely friends. Adam is on a mission to live a fuller life after his friends death, so he want's to go and experience places he probably wouldn't have otherwise. He invited Jewel to go along with him, and despite fighting the attraction between them and trying to keep his distance, he finds himself drawn to Jewel even more so on the trip.
I liked Adam, I thought he was a genuine character and his personality just made it all that much better. I struggled with liking Jewel for many reasons. Now I can understand that a lot of her actions and thinking stems from the fact that she is suffering from depression and maybe it's one of the reason's I have a hard time relating, but there where moments in the book that made her look down right obsessive. The moment she clung onto Adam, she wouldn't let him go. Despite the fact that he did his best to be her friend and not edge her on to thinking otherwise for a while. It still left Jewel in many seasons reacting very obsessive over Adam, the girl just couldn't stop. It felt like a strangely unhealthy behavior, and made the book a little difficult to read. Seriously, get a grip woman. There is no need to fall into a full on depression after the guy walks away from a kiss when you didn't even have him, nor knew him for that long. Her behavior with Levi, her ex, also kind of put me off.
The book sped up during the traveling part, and outside of it turning into a sex thing with Jewel unable to stop using sex to try to get to Adam, it did have a lot of potential. Some thrown in random memory scenes from the past here and there also left a lot of confusion and felt unnecessary.
Overall, I did enjoy the book to an extent. I think Adam might have saved it for me as I eagerly waited to hear his 'big' secret.
20-year old Jewels meets 21-year old college drop-out Adam Murphy on the campus of the school he no longer attends. Things are not going so well for Jewels, but in Adam, she finds a friend. Adam hasn’t seen much of the country and the two talk of things he should do. Because of Jewel’s quirky, fun personality, Adam invites her on his road trip. The two dance around a friendship for the first half of the book, until Jewels takes matters into her own hands.
It had a bit of slow start, but when the couple hits the road, the story came to life.
I thought Jewels’ character was great fun. She’s feisty, got a trash mouth and holy moly, is quite the little nymphette!
The road trip was exciting, and you could tell the author had actually been to these places and done these things by the way she is able to describe them in detail. I enjoyed reading about Adam fulfilling his 'bucket list' while falling in love. There were plenty of hot sex scenes and witty dialogue, but with the emphasis of the story placed on Adam and Jewels’ sexual relationship, the road trip was like filler between the sexual romps. I had hoped for more.
I have a little beef that readers are not offered any clues to what Adam’s secret is, and then WHAM, we are blindsided with it. I felt cheated by that.
Additionally, there were a few discrepancies. For example: During the sexy bus scene, Jewels tells Adam she has an IUD — no need for him to worry — but then, during subsequent sex scenes, Adam uses a condom. These points aside, I enjoyed Adam's List. It was a fun, sexy read.

♥Seriously, this is my first Jennifer Ann novel and I am completely blown away! To say that she has impeccable talent is an understatement, she's a literary GODDESS! I purchased this book on its release day and started it late late last night and finished it at about ten this morning! I couldn't put it down. There are so many things I could ramble on about that made it such a great read: The storyline is natural, it was not forced or hard to follow whatsoever. Its like you are being thrown into the story and your automatically a part of the people they meet and know. I absolutely fell in love with Adam and his "dark secret", and also with Jewels' and her quirky, and at times almost dark sense of humor. They embark on this journey together only to find they needed each other to do so. "Adam's List" had me weeping, it had me giggling, and completely turned on during this "adventure" of a story. (But in a good way) I am planning on making this a regular read until I know it word for word with the playlist, IT'S THAT GOOD ;)
You wont be sorry if you purchase this, believe me. You're Welcome! ♥
I've read other books by Jenn and she never ceases to amaze me with her writing. The detail and emotions that are brought out with Adam's List keep you on your toes and wanting more. The main characters and their instant connection makes you swoon. I loved that the rules seemed to be reverse from the normal romance books, I wont go into detail on how their reverse as I dont want to giveaway any spoilers. Let's just say both Adam and Jewels have been dealt a not so pretty card when it comes to life and death, but now that they have found each other they are willing to fight for each other. This book had me cracking up laughing with the back and forth banter between these two and then it had me crying, Adam really made my heart ache for him. I see this book as a stand alone however, I could read about these characters forever. I can't wait to see what Jenn has in store for us next because I just know its bound to be epic!
As much as I'd like to say I loved this book, there is just something that didn't quite connect with me all the way through. I liked it (certain parts quite a bit actually) but as I kept reading, I think when things turned dire, I felt there should have been more details given in certain situations and I felt it was a bit rushed. I was confused at times where it just jumped to days later…I was like, "what just happened"?? when I wanted to know more right where I was at.
I thought Jewels and Adam had a connection, but she came across a bit crass where I think her understanding would have been more acceptable. I liked her ok, but I loved Adam!
OK, so with that said, I really did like the story! It kept me wanting to know more and I know I will move forward with the author's next book, so that is a good thing! Bring on Theo!
Thanks for allowing me to read and review your book!
I received this book free through Goodreads and was very impressed. It's a roller coaster of emotion which Jennifer brings out so well with both of the characters that you feel like you're experiencing the story yourself. I thought is was well written and I would enjoy other of her books. I recommend it to be added to your "to read" list!
4-4.5 I love Adam stars ******I love when I stumble across a book in the "explore" section of Goodreads. I was sold on the synopsis and knew I must read. Let me say I'm beyond thrilled with this story. Was unique to the way story unfolds and suspense in what lies ahead for the books hero and heroine. Put on your TBR. Great summer read!
Oh my goodness this book was great. It had me hooked within the first few pages and then I just needed to read the whole thing right away. I was taken through a roller coaster of emotions with the characters. I loved it and want MORE!!!!!
This book reminded me so much of the Edge of Never. There are so many glaring similarities. The two conflicted main characters, both holding deep secrets. The plot centered around a trip and the idea of completing a bucket list...depression, illness, estrangement from family. The list goes on, but I don't want to add spoilers...especially because Edge of Never is just a spectacular book.
I really wanted to love Adam's list...and with it, Jewels and Adam's story, but because it reminded so much of this other book, I couldn't appreciate if fully--- Edge of Never is just better written.
Adam's list isn't a bad book, but it's not a great book either. It had so much potential because the concept and plot are strong, but it lacked in execution.
The book is jus ok. The beginning was slow...the story dragged some before I was engaged in the plot. We also get a lot of superfluous scenes between Jewels and her roommate, and her boyfriend, that don't really move the story along. I think the pacing of the book could have been tightened up, along with the dialogue. I see this happen with a lot of new authors and many books. The writers add detail confusing it for plot, but if it doesn't move the story along, it's just story filler. Story filler, like the bread bowl on a dinner table, can leave you feeling stuffed and uncomfortable with no nutritional value if you indulge too much.
I think with some editing and maybe an outline, the story could have fleshed out better. At times, it was all over the place. It had strong potential.
****I received a copy of this book for an honest review****
I would have to say this is a solid 4**** review. I really liked the story of Adam and Jewels.
Jewels is a girl that has a past that haunts her and she is punishing herself for a mistake that she made in the past. She feels that she doesn't deserve to have happiness in her life for what she feels caused such sorrow in so many others lives, due to her own selfish behavior.
Adam is a dream guy. It is like he dropped down from heaven. He is uncomplicated as it may seem to those around him. An easy-going guy that just wants to discover all kinds of fun things in life.
When Jewels and Adam meet they have an instant chemistry, not just a physical attraction, but a fun and friendly beginning friendship. She doesn't want to make any commitments and neither does he. Through the beginnings of growing friendship Adam proposes a bucket list trip and wants Jewels to accompany him since he has never been anywhere and doesn't know where to start.
During this trip their friendship grows into something much more. When they both reveal there past secrets, they find that they will fight for the things that neither thought they ever would. Together they grow stronger together.
There is so much that I can't even begin to get into, but it is a great story of growth and overcoming fears. You must read their journey to fully understand what a great couple these two make. I can't wait to read more of these stories to find out where some of the other characters in the story evolve and hopefully to get more of Jewels and Adam. This is a stand alone, but the adventure carries on!
Adam's List is the first book I have ever read by Jennifer Ann (AKA Jennifer Naumann). It centers around a college student named Jewels. In high school, Jewels was the stereotypical blonde cheerleader dating her beloved football player. When their relationship meets with disaster, Jewels finds herself at college and deep in depression. As Jewels struggles to live a normal life, she meets a boy named Adam and a they become quick friends.
I always love a tormented main character and Adam's List gave me two. You immediately know from the first time Jewels and Adam meet that not everything is as it seems. Adam is an easy character to love. While Jewels character is a struggle to "feel." I truly think this has to do with Jewels' depression. I really liked the author's take on depression in that not everyone with depression lays around in bed unable to get up and moving. Many try to repress their deep inner feelings with alcohol and sexual activity while seeming "fine" to those around them. I think it's refreshing for an author to tackle such difficult topics in new yet utterly realistic ways. I read a few other reviews and many discussed how it was difficult to relate or actually feel Jewels as a character, but I believe that was deliberate on the author's part. It's just an extension of her depression. It was clear to me that Jewels even struggled to understand / relate to her own feelings.
I must say, when I agreed to read this book for a blog tour, I am not much into books like this, but I think this book has persuaded me to look into the romance side a bit deeper and select books like this that keep you on the edge of your seat, full on emotions and HOT HOT HOT.
I felt so sorry for Jewels, she went through some things that girl and suffering from depression is not good, hiding it with a flippant attitude, sarcasm and booze is not the way to go, she soon see's this for herself when meeting the man of her dreams. However, as all relationships, nothing is straight forward.
I enjoyed Jennifer Ann's writing and if this book is anything to go by, I would certainly read more from her.
Adam's List is one of my favourite reads for 2014. The characters and their problems are believable and induce emotion, especially to Adam's secret problem. I adore Jewels, and I love the way she reacts to the hurdles in life. Adam, well Jen did such a wonderful job making him swoonworthy and every girl's dream guy. A great read and I look forward to reading Jen's next book- 'Kelly's Quest'.
I loved this book! I was so into it I had to read it in one sitting!!!! I had an inkling the things that transpired were coming but it didn't take away from the book. Such a beautiful romance. I have never read and books by this author before but now I am definitely checking her other titles out. What a great read...wow. I just can get over it!
Amazing story with great characters. Adam and Jewel's story was raw and real. The main secret was completely unexpected. It made for an interesting and unique new adult Romance.
No, maja.

Adam's List actually caught my eye because of the description and NOT the cover. If you've been following my blog for anytime at all, then you should know how incredibly rare that is. While the cover is alright... I mean, it's not great. Anyway, none of that is terribly important as far as this review is concerned. Just thought I'd throw it out there. I had never read anything by Jennifer Ann (a.k.a. Jen Naumann) and after reading this book I'm honestly on the fence about reading anything else of hers. Please, let me tell you why!
Full disclaimer - I may be unnecessarily nit-picky during this uncharacteristically long review.
This book is about Jewels, former high school cheerleading captain turned converse-wearing manic depressive - but she's good as long as she takes her drugs! The other main character is Adam, the gorgeous, sweet college dropout who is instantly drawn to Jewels. The pull is so mutually intense that Jewels immediately breaks things off with her long-time boy toy and agrees to go with Adam on a cross country trip. As is standard with New Adult novels, they're both hiding a huge secret (though we know Jewels' from the start), both of which obviously threaten to tear apart their friendship-turned-more. It sounds like a great premise for a book, I'll give it that. And, to be honest, it works. For the first half of Adam's List, I truly thought this would be a five star review. But then I got to know Jewels.
I -hate- Jewels and that's a word I reserve for special situations (last used in 2011, thankyouverymuch). The more I found out about her, the more I hated her. I found myself being literally angry while reading this book to the point that my husband noticed. She is a despicable person and I really cannot understand why everyone else in the story liked her. The difference between her "big secret" and Adam's is that she brought hers on herself by being a piece of crap! Some of the words I wrote down to describe Jewels are as follows:
*Selfish *Skank *Moron
I stand by them. Let me share with you some truly infuriating scenarios from Adam's List (possible mild spoilers).
1) She breaks up with her "boyfriend" for Adam and then proceeds to have sex with the guy she broke up with anyway just because he showed up at her apartment. In doing this, she lied to both her roommate and to Adam, who caught her in the act. She is then confused about why Adam just wants to be friends and whether it is because he "thinks I'm really still involved with Levi." Hmm... Ya think that might be it, Jewels?
2) This girl had a boyfriend, broke up with him, slept around a bunch, and then started semi-dating an older man who she all but calls a sex god (maybe she did call him that?)... and then we find out that no one in the history of her sexcapades has ever gone down on her. I'm not buying it. Not for a second.
3) Adam tells her that he does not want sex with her to be "cheap" and he basically wants it to be intimate and special. He turns her down more than once when she tries to have sex with him in random public places like behind a dumpster. Well, she completely ignores him and does it anyway. On a public party bus. I literally put the book down after and asked myself, "did she just rape him?" Yes, he was pissed after.
4) After said bus rape, she is mad that he's mad and feels absolutely no remorse whatsoever. She makes him feel like the bad guy. She even tells the reader later that she doesn't want to revisit "why he's mad 'I took advantage of him' in the bus." She puts it in quotes. She thinks it's a joke.
5) She's so mad at him for being mad that she decides to basically dry hump and all-but-make-out with some random guy she meets at a house party (which she agreed they were going to without Adam's consent). She carries on a conversation with the same guy while he's naked, but Adam doesn't know. She imagines what it would be like to be with naked guy.
6) When Adam reveals his big secret, Jewels is all like, "I knew it and totally saw all the signs but didn't want to admit it." No.You.Did.Not.Jewels. You are a liar and the truth is not in you. The only changes we've read about until this point is that his hair got a little longer. Jewels, you're full of crap.
7) I cannot reveal why, but Jewels is incredibly selfish and thinks the entire world revolves around her. Theo, the aforementioned naked guy, is the voice of reason, informing Jewels that "Love can't always be about what you want." This is some kind of huge revelation for her.
8) She spends the entire book talking about how gorgeous she is, how toned her thighs are, etc. (and having everyone else constantly confirm this) and then suddenly, at 80%, we get this jewel (pun intended): "Once I'm completely naked, exposing all my imperfections..." Oh, just shut up.
9) She totally rapes him bareback and then is suddenly concerned with condoms the next time they "do it" (because we use words like "down there" in this book).
I'm sorry, but I don't have a number 10. As you can see, Jewels is disgusting. I cannot stand her. At all.
There were a few other things that just did not make sense in this book and I really think they were just oversights on the author's part. For example, Jewels describes Adam as the very best sex partner of all her many sex partners, yet Adam tells her she's the only one who's ever seen him naked. Um, what? Let me tell you, dear reader, people aren't just born great in bed. The other glaring detail I just cannot ignore is Adam's eyes. WHAT COLOR ARE ADAM'S EYES?! Throughout this book, they're described as gray, baby blue, and steel blue, and these terms are used interchangeably. I worked as an Ophthalmology Technician for five years and those are three distinctly different colors, folks!
Finally, the formatting was weird. I'm not sure if it was just my copy, but there were no breaks between events. So one second we're running through downtown Chicago (literally) and the next paragraph is "I stir with a light tapping on the door." This would have been a simple fix and I really hope it's remedied.
Okay, so you're probably asking yourself, "Does she have anything at all good to say about this book?" I actually do, believe it or not. I honestly did like this story. I enjoyed it. It was a good story. Every character other than Jewels was wonderful and, I'd imagine, a freaking joy to be around! Kelly, the best friend, was the kind of person I'd love to add on facebook. And even though Theo played into Jewels' skankiness when he didn't realize she was serious with Adam, he was a great guy too! I just can't understand why all these fantastic people would waste their time on such a terrible person. And why, oh why! is Adam attracted to her? Adam is wonderful. He's patient and kind and gorgeous and obviously a natural-born sex god, if Jewels is to be trusted. I loved Adam. I really enjoyed going with them on their trip, I enjoyed Adam's struggles (I honestly couldn't care less about the struggles of Jewels-Center-Of-The-Universe), and the memories they made.
If Jennifer Ann had just made her main character a little less terrible and a little more sympathetic, this could have gone a whole different way. For the story, I'd give it five stars, but for Jewels I cannot, in good conscience, give such a fantastic rating. Because I enjoyed it overall and it kept me turning pages and up til 2am, I'll settle at three.
I gave it a 3.75. It wasn't quite a 4 for me, but better than a 3.5.
I liked this book a lot. I liked the story concept and how it was written. It definitely took us on a long journey that I enjoyed reading.
In this story we learn about Jewels meeting Adam and watch their realtionship grow. When she meets Adam she is slightly involved with someone, but we soon realize that it is nothing more than sex. It's an interesting beginning because we kind of only get slight glimpses at each character. We know Levi is older, but not how much older. Part of me pictured this guy in his thirties ... not at all. Then we meet Adam and we don't really know too much about him either. He's definitely protective of Jewels, but is he more geeky or bad boy? Is he more playboy or serious? Is he rich or poor? We don't get this information until later in the book. Same questions with Jewels. Part of me wishes that we knew this information earlier, but another part likes the slow reveals. I ended up really liking Jewels. Early on I pictured her as this really preppy chearleader who was stuck up and rude and maybe had this fall from grace that led to her being a grunge and recluse. I think she was always who she is throughout the book and I ended up likking her character. If for nothing else than her sense of humor and music interests. She was someone who seemed nice with close friends and always had a love of music and sense of humor. We don't get any real solid story on what happened to her with her mental breakdown. We get it in its and pieces, so sometimes it's hard to follow.
I really liked her friend Kelly and I'm looking forward to the next book, which is Kelly's. She was funny and I like the way that she reacted with Jewels. She was the voice of reason and realistic options for Jewels when she needed it. Adam was a good guy, but their were times where I still feel like I didn't get to know him as much as I wanted to.
I feel like this book was broken up into two parts. Before the trip and during the trip. I think of some of the parts in the beginning that occured with Levi and Jewels that I'm not sure were important, but at the same time it really made the story and build up between Adam and Jewels more informative. Even though it seemed irrelevent in the end.
the thing that kept me from giving this books a solid four was that I wasn't sure I really believed the build up between Jewels and Adam. I was almost just as thrown as Jewels when the time came that Adam finally kissed her. I know it was supposed to be passionate and feeling ... but I just wasn't really into it. There were a lot of time when Jewels debated her feelings with Adam and I didn't really believe the back and forth. Jewels went on and on in the beginning about how much she was falling for him that I didn't believe her when she was trying to fight them later on. That being said, once they finally got together, I was in it with them. I loved the relationship and the sorrow that I felt through this book. I loved the story and while Adam's actual secret may have crossed my mind, I wasn't 100%. I loved the twist and I felt the sorrow. It was just written very well. This book was also written really well to be set up for following books about characters in this book. I'm excited to see more from this author and plan on reading any other books to follow. Enjoy!!
