The ultimate ophthalmic dispensing reference, this book provides a step-by-step system for properly fitting and adjusting eyewear. It covers every aspect of dispensing ― from basic terminology to frame selection to eyewear fitting, adjusting, and repairing. Perfect for both students who are just learning about dispensing and practitioners who want to keep their skills up to date, this resource offers in-depth discussions of all types of lenses, including multifocal, progressive, absorptive, safety, recreational, aspheric, and high index. Plus, it goes beyond the basics to explore the "how" and "why" behind lens selection, to help you better understand and meet your patients' vision needs.
This book has a lot of knowledge but turns out in a lot of the math questions in the textbook, the answers given are wrong LOL. Hopefully the institution that requires you to read this warns you in advance unlike mine. As of writing this, this most recent version of the book was printed in 2007 and there was never an update to the content or all the annoying grammar mistakes?? It’s been over 16 years since this edition was released and I’m paying WAY too much for a textbook that myself in the seventh grade could’ve edited and not to mention all of the wrong math. Also who decided how this book is organized? It’s so unintuitive considering all the content involved. Within one chapter will be Subheading 1 and Subheading 2 and then Subheading 3 will pretty much repeat or coincide with subheading 1 when it could’ve just been one subheading, or at least put them side by side. Also a lot of the content in this textbook isn’t relevant anymore, and some relevant stuff isn’t ever mentioned. Also the wording for most things will hardly ever make sense. Good riddance textbook can’t wait to take my exam and never see you again. 👋
This extremely comprehensive book took me exactly 2500 minutes to read (41 Hrs 40 Mins). Its value is not so much as a sit-down-reading-book, but more as a powerful reference tool AFTER having read it once. After reading this one time through, one will be empowered to then recall exactly where in this reference book to go for getting specific optical/optician/eyewear-dispensing answers.
The "Multiple Choice" concept for the "Proficiency Tests" were excessively abysmal - even with taking them as "open book tests." For these would-be "tests," the authors were so excessively focused on trick questions that I stopped altogether even "taking the tests" after the 4th chapter. (And I am the guy who earned 2 Degrees in 3 Years with a 4.0 GPA (when the scale for Bachelor's Degrees was out of 4.0!)
I also think that the order of chapters were oddly established. I chose to read chapters of priority in case I not read all the chapters. Ultimately, I did read it all, so it does not matter. (Anyone reading this review is encouraged to also peruse my reading-sequence of the chapters, below.)
For all of those reasons, I could have dropped the rating of this book down to 2-stars. But now that I have finished reading the book, and I now understand and know how to use this as a future reference, I recognize that THAT is where this comprehensive and sometimes-almost-too-detailed book has its real value! (When I come back for future references, having those details will be so helpful!)
I've been an Optician for over 10 years and read this for an online class I've been taking. Tons Of information, depending on what your doing in optics (sales, lab work, dispensing, etc) some chapters will very helpful some you'll just want to skim. I do intend to let my apprentices read this before taking the ABO exam.

This book has it all. It's an actual textbook with lots of information. With that being said, some can be deemed useless information, but all things considered, this should be your go to for anything regarding optics. Good study book for the ABO exam
