I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

This is a fantastic urban fantasy, which is a prequel to the Witchblood series. However, this could be read as a stand-alone.

Brooke Gardner is a fantastic character. She is a young teenager of 15, and an orphan. I liked this young woman as she tried to cope with nightmares that seem real, and a life that spiraled out of control. She is sent to a special boarding school for "troubled" children, where she finds out that she is not a normal human. She is an Elemental witch.

I have read the Witchblood series, so was eager to read this book as soon as I heard about it.This story captured my attention from the first page.

There are some wonderful characters in this story, and we are introduced to Brittany, the young witch who later meets Jess in the Witchblood series. We also meet Leo, a half-human/angel. I must admit that I did like Ember, who was also a witch, as well as Caleb and Blade. These characters were lifelike and interesting. The Headmistress of Ravenwood is, however, a fanatic with a sadistic bent. She is determined to stamp out any paranormal activity such as witchcraft, which she sees as possession.

The story was full of action and danger. I loved the way the story unfolded, but I found some of the plot was not as sharp as it could have been, though there are several twists and turns that surprised me. It is not an easy book to read, as there are some very disturbing scenes of torture and violence. I would have loved to have seen more interaction between Brooke and Leo, but as there was a major plot twist concerning these two characters, I suppose it wasn't possible. I was a little disappointed when I reached the end of the story, because I wanted to keep reading!

Emma Mills has written another fantastic YA novel. This book, however, is rather darker than her previous series. I loved the fast pace of the story, and it flowed beautifully.

Due to the mention of Electroshock Therapy and drug therapy, I do not recommend this to younger readers. However, I highly recommend this YA Dark Urban Fantasy if you love YA Paranormal Romance, Dark Fantasy or Horror genres. - Lynn Worton

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Brooke has been past from foster home to foster home all of her life. And eventually something terrible happens that is beyond her control. She has no more of an idea of what is going on than her foster family but after each incident she is sent back to "The Home" an orphanage. But now at the age of fifteen Brook has hit it lucky she now has a family that cares about her and wants her as their own daughter, so they adopt her.

But when strange things start happening and begin to happen more and more her adopted parents doesn't want to send her back to "The Home" they want to keep her and help her. So instead of sending her back they hear of a private school called Revenwood where they can help children like Brooke.

So off to Ravenwood she goes where she meets some good people and some bad people as well. Brooke finds a few new friends and she also finds enemies too. She finds out that there are people there like her. They help her figure out whom and what she is. They also try to help her learn to use and control her powers.

Ravenwood is not such a good place to be which Brooke finds out pretty quickly after arriving at the school. She finds out that she is one of the most powerful witches there and she maybe the only one that can help her friends and herself to escape the evil head mistress. But saving everyone may cost her more than she is willing to give. Will or can Brooke save herself and her friends?

Emma Mills is one of the best authors that I have run across in a very long time and one of the first authors to ask me to review her books. Flying With Fire is a spin-off of sorts from her bestselling series Witchblood. I have read all of the Witchblood novellas and loved each and every one of them. Emma is an amazing and talented author that you don't want to miss out on. If you have not read any of her books yet then I highly, highly recommend that you do. Flying With Fire is just as good if not better than the Witchblood series. Emma's writing just gets better and better. I can't wait to read more of her work and hopefully it will be in the near future too.

I love anything and everything Emma Mills writes and this latest book is NO EXCEPTION! She creates believable worlds out of the unbelievable. She creates characters that are rich and varied and always remind you of someone you know in your own life. The story takes you in twists and turns and you never know where things are going to go!

This book is a loose tie-in to the amazing Witchblood series, tied in through Brittany, Jess' witchy friend. Although Brittany is not the main character, it tells of her time (prior to meeting Jess) at Ravenwood, a mysterious boarding school where nothing is as it seems. This book centers around Brooke, a "troubled" girl who has been sent here and there to live with one foster family after another, eventually finding herself in Ravenwood. It is here that she comes to realize that the world is not what she thought it was, and neither is she. She also learns of the capacity for cruelty that exists in the name of righteousness.

The world of Ravenwood is very dark and very disturbing. There were moments in which the school reminded me of those "scare them straight" schools/camps that exist. It was terrifying and it makes you think about the level of cruelty that some people are capable of when faced with a fear of the unknown, of someone different from that which one considers to be acceptable.

Things to love...

--The twists and turns. I spent most of the book not knowing who was good and who was bad. And, really, those lines are never made clear, illustrating the fact that we each have the capacity for both.
--The dark tone. The disturbing nature really added to the suspense of the story and I loved it!

My Recommendation: While you could read this as a standalone, it would really be better with the experience of the Witchblood series. It is set before the time of the main series, but could be read at any point, in my opinion!

Full Review at: What's Beyond Forks?

Flying with Fire by Emma Mills takes place in the same world as the Witchblood Series. I didn't realize that right away until Brittany appeared on the page, and I thought: "Hey. I know her." It's a totally different plot line with totally different characters. I enjoyed each of the characters. Even the supporting characters had some depth to them. It's not always clear who's good and who's bad, but I think that's part f the point. Brooke, the main character, has been tossed from foster home to foster home until she is finally sent off to Ravenwood to be "treated". It's there that she find out there is a whole other world she never knew about, but has always been a part of. There are dark and crazy twists with some time travel mixed in, and you just don't know what to expect from one page to the next.

Flying With Fire by Emma Mills was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

Loved it

Different from any other fantasy series I have read. Written well and flow naturally thru the chapters. Brought a happy ending to a start of this new world.

Took a long time to read because of time constraints not because I was not itching to know what happened. Great book, the whole series needs to go on my to read again list.
