Kelly Underwood’s favorite things are reading, writing, and drinking coffee. She was born in New Hampshire, but don’t ask her about snow, because she’s been a Florida girl since she was twelve. Her debut novel with Sunrise Publishing gave Kelly the incredible opportunity to work with Lynette Eason as her mentor and lead author. Defending Honor, part of the Elite Guardians series, was published in October 2022 and earned third place in the Selah Awards and was a finalist in the Carol Awards. Since then, Kelly has continued to captivate readers with multiple romantic suspense novels.

Beyond writing, Kelly shares her love of reading through her blog, Best in Suspense. She also served as the 2024 and 2025 president for the Central Florida chapter of American Christian Fiction Writers. When she’s not plotting twists and turns for her next novel, you’ll find her out and about with her therapy dog—a feisty golden retriever named Maizie—bringing joy to everyone from children to senior citizens. She also loves traveling and has recently fallen in love with Ireland and Scotland—maybe you’ll see these settings as the backdrop to one of her future novels.

Kelly is a sucker for a good suspense novel, the kind you must read cover-to-cover until the mystery is solved and the bad guys are in handcuffs. If you’re looking for her, she’s probably on her back patio with Maizie, a Kindle in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.

Three things made this a spectacular book:

(1) I love the grumpy-sunshine trope and Kelly Underwood does this SO very well.

This new-to-me author created Dani Barlowe (independent, strong-willed, tenacious, city-girl reporter chasing a lead in Alaska) and Grizz (pompous, grouchy, outdoorsy hotshot with Midnight Sun in Alaska) and showed readers that when it comes to matters of the heart, opposites attract.

The forced proximity with a polar opposite was the perfect situation for Underwood to showcase her characters and their fiery emotions. The dynamics she created resulted in a rollercoaster of emotions and allowed readers an inside look into the lives of these two competitive personalities to see them falling in love. Most of all, I loved how Dani and Grizz fell for each other just as they are, not feeling a need to change anything for each other. Underwood's spotlight on the power of love was amazing!

(2) The theme of trust. Dani and Grizz both lost someone because they each chose to trust the wrong person. The resulting safeguarding is what kept these characters from connecting or trusting. Underwood gently brings them to a place where they realize that they can’t let past betrayals ruin their future decisions. The emotional pull was well-written.

(3) The faith thread. Dani’s personality overflows into her spiritual world. She doesn’t want to allow herself to rely on God. She isn’t sure if God would ever intervene when she needed Him to, so she hardens her heart, tells herself that she doesn’t need to wait around for “a God who may or may not show up,” and plans exit strategies herself. Underwood slowly works on softening Dani’s heart so that she can trust and accept help.

I’ll definitely be searching out another book by this author! She does characters (from past series and authors) justice, has created a pacey read with characters who are always on the run, and ever-present tension from a time clock counting down.

I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.

When truth explodes through the lies we’ve learned to live with, it doesn’t come gently. And yet, somehow, the grace of Jesus meets us there in the wreckage with a quiet whisper: this is where healing begins.

In Burning Truth, the lies run deep, the danger is sharp, and the grace? It’s the kind that’s wild and unearned and completely unstoppable.

Dani’s chasing a second chance. Grizz is holding tight to whatever peace he has left. Neither one expects redemption to find them in the middle of fear and fire—but that’s what makes it grace. The real kind. The kind that comes uninvited and stays anyway.

“… when this flesh and heart shall fail, and mortal life shall cease: I shall possess, within the veil, a life of joy and peace.” That line is so much more than song lyrics. It felt like truth with weight. The kind of promise that doesn’t change even when everything else burns to the ground.

“God had done the impossible.” Not in the headlines. Not in the big, loud ways. In the hearts of two people who weren’t looking to be rescued … but were anyway.

There’s pain in this story. There’s fear, and fire, and loss. But there’s also Jesus showing up in the middle of it, offering what only He can. Truth tears through the silence we’ve lived in too long. And grace—astonishing, undeserved, unrelenting—wraps itself around the wreckage.

This isn’t a story of easy healing or quick fixes. It’s a story of fire-tested truth and amazing grace.

It left me anchored—deeper in truth, steadier in grace, and more grateful than ever for Jesus, who gives us both.

I’m loving this series! This was another exciting and heart-pounding addition. I couldn’t read fast enough. Things are really heating up.

The militia is still wreaking havoc, and Dani and Grizz find themselves in their crosshairs.

I was so happy to learn more about Grizz. He’s a grumpy hotshot with serious trust issues, but there was something incredibly likable about him.

To repair the damage to her credibility, journalist Dani is hoping the story she’s working on about the militia will do just that. I admired her resiliency and determination.

I loved the faith element in this story. Both Dani and Grizz had their issues with God, but I really enjoyed watching their spiritual growth and learning to trust God.

If you’re a fan of unputdownable, adventure-filled romantic suspense, you do not want to miss out on this series! I highly recommend it! Be sure to start with book one, and you’ll be hooked. I’m so excited for the final book in this series. I’m anxious to find out how it all ends!

Outstanding!

And may I just say I desperately want an outhouse now??!!

Talk about opposites attract! Dani and Grizz are as different as the a solar and lunar eclipse. Amazing characters with amazing chemistry, but it’s more explosive than romantic in the beginning.

Tragedy strikes after Grizz gives her the cold shoulder and it’s up to him to find her and keep her safe. Teammates come to the rescue when the two find themselves under fire.

Who wants them dead and why? Can Dani break down his walls and can Grizz earn her trust?

And what is Grizz’s real name?

You’ll just have to read to find out! I received an advance copy from the publisher. I’m under no obligation and my review has not been solicited. Very highly recommended!

Looking for heart stopping suspense & non stop action? Burning Truth does not disappoint. The latest release in the Chasing Fire Alaska series is on fire. Dani gets herself into one predicament after another in the Alaskan woods and it seems that Grizz is always nearby to rescue her until maybe he's not. I think this is Kelly Underwood's best book yet & I can't wait to read more!

I am captivated by this series! Each one features more of the hotshots and smoke jumpers as they battle fires and domestic terrorists, and sometimes their past and their faith. I thoroughly enjoyed Burning Truth by Kelly Underwood.

Dani Barlow is an investigative reporter there for a story that will revive her career. She's also there because of a reliable tip from her friend Skye's husband FBI Agent Rio. She's to uncover more about the domestic terrorists and report on it since unfortunately, the FBI closed the case. When Dani arrives and Skye and Rio aren't at the base camp, the hotshots including Grizz think she is a diva, and they let her and her photographer go off in search of the terrorist compound alone. Grizz is a person not prone to trust anyone but his team, and heads to his cabin alone, any time he's not busy fighting fires. He has a gruff exterior but the heart of a protector. His cabin is full of surprises. Grizz goes to check on Dani and her photographer, and what ensues are three days that will change their lives.

I highly recommend Burning Truth and the entire Chasing Fire Alaska series for lovers of inspirational, non stop action, sweet romantic suspense stories.

These stories continue to captivate me! I feel like I am a part of the hotshot team and each story gives me a little more info about them and the chaos of the SOR.

Grizz is such a complex character and has so many surprises throughout the book for Dani. The team thinks that Dani is a diva but throughout the book she proves that she is as tough as nails.

I am eager for the next book to see how the story ends but will miss Alaska and all of these adventures.

Thanks to Sunrise Publishing for the arc. The opinions are my own.

This was an amazing Christian romantic suspense novella. It’s difficult to find an author who can easily insert humor into a suspense story without it sounding forced or out of place but Underwood did it flawlessly. Our heroine is an investigative reporter who headed up to Alaska on her boss’s orders. After Dani failed when tying to expose a senator earlier on she became a laughingstock and this is her last chance at redemption. Grizz is a hotshot and a veteran. When Dani crosses his path she earns the nickname Diva and he gruffly sends her on her way. When things heat up on the mountain and a bit of amnesia strikes her, Dani and Grizz find themselves stuck together fighting to survive. This was a thrilling installment in this series. I can’t believe this series is almost over! This is one of my favorites in this series and I cannot wait to both read the last book of the series and read more from this author. This is a just kisses, intimacy level 2.

I received an eARC of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I think I need to move to Alaska… Seriously though, Kelly did a wonderful job with this page-turner. I truly enjoyed getting to know the mysterious Grizz and meeting Dani a tenacious reporter that doesn’t know the word quit. They learn to trust one another but ultimately God in this fast-paced action with the perfect amount of romance story.

Burning Truth is a nonstop, heart pounding adventure.

Kelly Underwood tells a truly captivating story that had me turning pages late into the night. Dani and Grizz both have pasts that involve betrayal and self-doubt.

While Dani, a disgraced reporter, is tracking a story that she knows will redeem her career she sees more than she bargained for and the bad guys see her. Grizz, a reclusive member of the Midnight Sun crew, rescues her over and over from the seemingly unstoppable militia.

This story has a powerful faith element, teamwork, adventure, and fun surprises. Once you start this book, don’t plan on sleeping.

This book is a must read for fans of
*nonstop adventure
*enemies to more
*forced proximity
*redemption
*healing
*a strong faith element

The latest instalment in the Chasing Fire Alaska series starts off with a bang! If you haven't read the earlier novels in the series, then I would highly recommend reading them first as there is an awesome overarching story.

Once again, Burning Truth is filled with non-stop action and a few quiet moments of reflection. Kelly pens a brilliant mystery, and I love how the theme of trust was infused into this story. In between all of the action and suspense is Dani and Grizz's story, a sweet but sentimental romance.

I can't wait to read the final book in this series, and I'm really enjoying reading the Chasing Fire: Alaska stories.

Grizz tends and minds his own business. When he has vacation, he retreats to his favorite spot. He has no use for reporters, news media, crowds, the list goes on. But, all that changes when a woman’s life is in danger.

Dani needs to clear her name, she needs a gripping story, and she knows where to get it. She appreciates the man who is doing all he can to help her find the missing pieces-but his attitude hinders what she needs to do. Will she get what she came for?

Burning Truth is another thrilling adventure in the, “Chasing Fire: Alaska,” series and another one I highly recommend.

Y’all… I say it every time, but Burning Truth by Kelly Underwood might be my favorite in the Chasing Fire: Alaska series yet!! Every book in this series has been amazing, but this one? It delivered everything—gritty suspense, a simmering romance, and that slow burn of trust and healing that I absolutely love.

Dani Barlow is a disgraced city reporter on a mission to revive her career, chasing a lead deep into Alaskan territory… and right into danger. Enter Grizz (aka the grumpy, rugged firefighter with serious mountain-man energy) who wants nothing to do with her—or the trouble she brings. But when bullets fly and trust is tested, they’re forced to rely on each other to survive.

I loved how strong-willed and tenacious Dani was. She refused to back down—even when things got hard—and her dynamic with Grizz was everything I love about the opposites attract trope. Their chemistry crackled, and watching them break down walls and fight for something more than survival? Beautiful.

What really got me was the faith thread. Dani struggles with believing God would ever show up for her—so she puts her faith in herself instead. But God meets her in the wilderness, and that journey of letting go and learning to trust again? So powerful. Both Dani and Grizz have been burned before—literally and emotionally—and watching them heal and choose each other was so rewarding.

Kelly brought her own unique flair to the series, and I loved how the larger plot kept unfolding piece by piece, setting up perfectly for the next book. I’m SO ready (and not ready) for Sanchez and Kane’s story. This whole series has been one wild, unforgettable ride!

If you’re craving action, heart, healing, and romance set against the breathtaking danger of the Alaskan wild—don’t miss this one.

ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.

So much excitement!

Once Grizz and Dani got over their initial dislike of each other, they found things they had in common. In between running from constant danger, they slowly learned to lean on God and trust Him in the midst of their challenges. We learned more about the SOR and I’m looking forward to seeing how things wrap up in the final book.

Dani and Grizz were a fantastic couple!

These two didn't start off on the best foot, but I love how they came together with a common goal to survive but also to protect each other.

Their love grew fast, but strong in the face of danger. This whole series has been one adrenaline ride after another and I am here for every second of it!

I absolutely loved getting to know Grizz better and see into his story and his heart. He truly is a hero and I'm so glad he got to prove that to Dani and to himself. Dani was a great match for him and I love how she wanted in on the action and wasn't just going to wait around for rescue.

I cannot imagine how this is going to all play out in the last book of the series, but I cannot wait to find out!

Burning Truth is the first book I have read written by Kelly Underwood and it was such a pleasure. This is the fifth book in the Chaising Fire: Alaska seires, and though I am excited to see what happens next, I am not sure I am ready to be done with Alaska. This can be read as a stand-alone.

The character development was good. I loved getting to know Grizz with his grumpy personality. Dani is trying to repair her reputation as a journalist. While being out of her comfort zone in the Alaska wilderness.

The setting and storyline were great. Throughout this series, I have come to love Alaska. We come face to face with the militia again but in a new camp. This time they are coming after the reporter. Some new information is uncovered about the group. There was not as much fire fighting in this story, but it was still a great story.

The opposites attract romance was perfect kiss only romance. It gave off Beauty and the Beast vibes with Grizz’s grumpy outside, held up in his cabin while the militia is trying to break in, as they fall in love. I am not sure if this was intently, but I enjoyed it.

Kelly Underwood did a great job intertwining faith throughout the book. As Grizz and Dani learn to trust God.

Dani Barlow is a disgraced journalist who is trying to fix her reputation by getting a great story about the happenings around the smokejumper team and the strange group operating in the mountains. Grizz just wants to be left alone, but he's also not going to let Dani get herself killed. In this book we find out even more of the operations going on and things are getting a little messy. Kelly wrote an amazing book with this one and it's definitely one of my favorites in the series!

✨Book Review✨

“Reporter Dani Barlowe wasn’t sure which was worse-facing down an actual bear in the wilds of Alaska or duking it out with a pompous, gruff, grouchy hotshot aptly named Grizz.”

Burning Truth by Kelly Underwood started off with a bang, and it was nonstop from there. It continues the overall plot of the series, what are the militia group up too? With this being the second to the last book in the series, things are definitely starting to come together. The biggest thing I wanted to know was what is Grizz’s first name! lol. No worries we find out what his first name but no spoilers from this review. 🤐 I will say I would have never guessed it.

Dani Barlowe is a journalist who possibly at the end of her career. Unless this tip from her smokerjumper friend turns out to be a big story. I was invested in Dani’s arc. I loved reading about her realizing her job isn’t the most important thing in her life. I was also a big fan of providing Grizz wrong about her being able to survive the wilderness of Alaska. Granted things definitely worked better for her when she stuck with Grizz, but it was fun watching her realize this.

Grizz is a hotshot that has been seen throughout the Chasing Fire: Alaska series. I was so excited that he finally got his story. He is the typical grumpy, no one gets to know the real me leading man. I was sold as him being our leading man for this book. Grizz has a hard time trusting people, so it was really interesting watching him open up and trust Dani. I loved reading about him and his team of hotshots work together to get everyone out a live while the militia hunting Grizz and Dani down.

Burning Truth is a fast pace book, you won’t be able to put it down once you start. If you enjoy a good enemies to romance trope you’ll definitely want to check out this book!

These thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you Sunrise Publishing for the ARC.

This fantastic series is really heating up. Things are getting more tense by the day. It is very evident that this militia group must be stopped. The action was non-stop and, at times, a little scary. There is something evil hidden in the mountains of Alaska.

Dani Barlow has arrived in Alaska in an attempt to salvage her journalistic career. She hopes to uncover what exactly is going on with the secret militia. This city girl soon finds herself on the run for her life.

Grizz is a hotshot with the Midnight Sun crew. Once he realizes that Dani is missing, he feels it is his fault and he goes to rescue her.

After that point, things really start to amp up. There is nowhere safe for them. There is danger everywhere. Lucky for Dani, she has Captain America to help her out. You will learn that Grizz has planned well.

Dani was a little reckless, but I had to admire her tenacity. She put on her big girl shoes and showed there was a lot more to her than just a reporter looking for a story. She was much stronger than she gave herself credit for.

Grizz was my hero, in every sense of the word. He had that gruff exterior that he wore like body armor, but it also came from a place of pain. Both of these characters had something from their past that had weighed them down. Both were also struggling with their faith. Dani had all but abandoned her faith entirely. Their survival skills and faith will be tested in ways they never imagined. Dani and Grizz could not be more opposite, yet somehow it seems divine providence has entered the picture with a master plan they could not even imagine.

Thank you to Sunrise Publishers for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Burning Truth by Kelly Underwood is a non-stop thrill ride. Readers will love the two main characters who have competing lifestyles. Grizz, the hero, is an ex-military outdoors type of man, whereas, Dani, the heroine, is a reporter from the big city. As soon as they literally run into each other, they run from people trying to destroy both. Plenty of bullets flying and hidden tunnels that come up in weird places. Even though that is not enough, Underwood has them trying to figure out who is trying to kill them and why. Plus, they want to know the secrets of the building with the white smoke. Readers who enjoy romance will be delighted to see the walls of both characters come down as they struggle to survive and fight to survive. Romance is not the focus, but it is woven through the story in between moments of high octane running from the bad guys. Grizz’s personal cabin and the other cabin they venture to are described with detail against the Alaskan wilderness. Overall, Burning Truth by Kelly Underwood features familiar characters from past stories in this series, but also, sprinkles in romance into the action. The final book comes out soon, and I can’t wait to see what happens.

Kelly Underwood brings the next installment of the Chasing Fire: Alaska series with Burning Truth, and it's a doozy! You won't be able to put this exciting opposites-attract novel down.

I love the way that the surprises just keep coming in this story. Grizz is a totally fun lead, and I love the way that he just keeps pulling stuff out of his hat ... er, cabin. Dani's much deeper than she seems at first glance, too, and the combo makes for a really fun story, if you can call non-stop literary action 'fun.' I do, so Burning Truth was a blast for me to read.

This book contains some major hints about what will happen in the last book in the series, and I can't wait to read it. With each book driving home lessons about faith through the lyrics of 'Amazing Grace' and hardcore action, this entire series has been exactly the kind of fiction I believe we're meant to read: fun, entertaining, and full of hope and truth.

So if you're ready to dig into a new book, give Burning Truth a try. You'll be glad you did.

I can't believe this Alaska Fire summer series is almost over and I still have so many unanswered questions...

Who is the militia chasing these hotshots and smoke jumpers?! Every time we think we get a glimpse of who is behind all this madness, another question pops up or the team is lulled into an uneasy truce.

I loved the story between Dani, an investigative reporter who is in Alaska for her second chance. She wants to redeem herself for a story that broke wrong and gave her a bad reputation. She is NOT an outdoor gal, but finds herself in the wilds of Alaska and teamed up with a grouchy outdoorsman-Grizz. I love his lumberjack, man-of-few words persona. He doesn't let people in easily but somehow Dani slips past his defenses. And the secrets the man hides! For someone who doesn't like technology, he has an amazing "man cave" to help counter the militia. But most of all, I love the them of grace and reconnecting with God.
