At the end of a perfectly mundane day Rain Hart’s life was forever altered. Finding herself suddenly thrust into the center of a supernatural world filled with creatures she never dreamed existed, she quickly learns what she is and that the cost of her happiness can be high, but is it more than she's willing to pay? The unexpected renown she attains through nothing more than being real gains her invaluable friends and dangerous enemies. Raised an orphan in a human world she never thought she’d learn who her parents were; the truth of her lineage just might kill her.
Rain is a delightful novel. Set in Phoenix and Sacramento, (and sometimes hell) the story is about Rain, a normal woman thrown into a supernatural life. Melissa's first novel is a great read and I've already started on the second.
Rain is an orphan with no knowledge of her birth parents. Raised in the system, she has never really connected with another person. Instead, her average appearance and tendency to move objects when angry, inspired her caregivers to fear her. As an adult, Rain strives to blend in and lives a solitary existence.
Things change when she starts to notice that she is being followed by a mysterious stranger. He never approaches and never threatens, so she ignores him...until Rain comes home from work one day to find him sitting on her couch.
This introduction forces Rain to abandon her quiet existence and explore her true origins. Not only does the supernatural world exist, but she was born from it. Now, her ignorance could lead to a fate worse than death if her stalker and his allies can't teach her to master her inherited supernatural talents.
The story was readable, but I sometimes felt Rain's reactions were a bit off. Her reaction to having a stalker and the way she flipped between helpless and superhero when threatened didn't ring true. I also felt a lot went unexplored. Very little in depth world building. Not sure if I'll read the next one.
