Sky-Island 1827-E

From the author of the original and highly creative KING HENRY TAPES comes the new steampunk world of THE ONE PATH. Intricately designed and refusing to pull any punches, be prepared to step into a world of endless skies, bravery, treachery, and--of course--killer robots.

The 13th Sky Watcher has been given the most important mission in the Clocker War. A mission without personal glory. A mission not of sharpguns, rolling landships, or thundering cannons, but of telescopes, mathematics, and watchful eyes.

Alone in the wilderness, with only a few miles of floating rock to call home, they have nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no hope for relief if things go wrong. Daily, the Clocker Triumvirate launches rockets across the skies to rain down on the homelands and colonies of the Democratic League. The only advanced warning, the only hope that the rockets may be intercepted, comes thanks to the 13th’s constant vigilance.

Yet when a mysterious, slow-moving dot appears in the sky, Captain Benjen Rahjain knows that this time telescopes won’t be the answer to the 13th’s problems.

Pick up a gun, boys, sharp or blunder! The Clocker War has found us at last!

A Real Gem

The more of Raley's work I read, the more I appreciate what an excellent writer he is. Not only does he come up with new and fascinating worlds, he populates them with rich characters, deep history, and riveting situations. His action and plot are polished and carved works of art, but the real gems in all of his works are the characters - the people - that drive (and in some cases survive) it all. Seriously: find his books and read them.

This story stands on its own as a real gem. The world is new and yet believable and the editing is fabulous. It reminds me of an old 'Twilight Zone' style, where you're not sure of anything and are introduced to the world character by character, scene by scene. Just like the old show though, nothing is quite ever as you know. The characterization is awesome (yes, I keep gushing about that, but with reason) and the story keeps you coming back for the next chapter. The news items really help in clearing things up quickly: a really nice way to get more exposition tucked in.

Just to prove I'm not a fan boy I'll point out that there was one word (yep, just one) in the story that did stick out like a sore thumb, and that word was "hassle". (I persevered.)

This and the delightful "marriage" story are excellent ways to start your Raley addiction before heading off into the very deep "King Henry" books. (There be dragons.) Enjoy.

Admittedly I'm a huge fan of Raley's King Henry series, but this is a great book in its own right. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say that this is much more than it first appears. Not only does it do a great job of making you feel the camaraderie of a group of soldiers, it also forces you to evaluate your own preconceived notions of right and wrong. All of the characters were vividly portrayed and instantly recognizable, not to mention much more complex than first impressions.

This book will have you thinking after you're done, that's for sure. Highly recommended if you're in the mood for a compelling read that draws you in very quickly.

The story starts quite simply and with moderate interest. I had to drag myself through it and let it build a bit before I took more interest in it. But then more background and underlying story started pulling me in. As the final confrontations start hitting things just go wild and I could not put it down expecting things to happen and seeing things change on me. The end however was fantastic! The story is way deeper than thought and things behind the scenes are quite different! Read this!
