Hailed by the New York Times Bestselling Author T. Jefferson Parker as “a strong new voice in American Crime Fiction,” New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author J. Carson Black is back—and so is her iconic detective, Arizona DPS Criminal Investigator Laura Cardinal.
Ten minutes to midnight: A man waits in line at JFK International Airport to board Skyways Airlines Flight 12 to Rome. His face is impassive, his eyes bleak. His fists are clenched. The woman behind him has a bad feeling . . .
Months before: A young woman approaches Arizona Department of Public Safety detective Laura at the fitness center they share, telling her that she is slated for death, and wants Laura to “investigate her murder” when it happens. Weeks later, the woman is found dead in her car—forcing Laura to revisit the most disturbing homicide case of her career. During the course of her investigation, Laura learns the truth about the killer she arrested long ago.
What Laura doesn’t know: What will happen to the 388 souls on Flight 12? * * * * * What do you get when a dozen bestselling, award-winning mystery/thriller authors write brand-new material centered on one heart-stopping event?
A decent novella - the discovery of a dead woman in a wrecked car with a bullet in her head starts to lead into a character from the first Cardinal novel.
…Fasten your seat belt and get ready to board Flight 12. This is a series of 12 writers, writing 12 stories that have a character who boards Flight12. This is the second book in the series. It features Laura Cardinal as a detective with the Arizona Department of Public Safety. A woman approaches Laura requesting that she investigate the woman’s death when it occurs. A few weeks later that same woman is found shot in the head . The dead woman’s car is found at the bottom of a car accident that happened on a hairpin mountain curve . The author weaves the past and present together very smoothly allowing your to easily follow the events. The story moves at an accelerated pace with many surprising twists and turns. This intriguing mystery ends by giving us another passenger to board Flight12. This ebook was given to me by the author. My opinion is my own.
I read this book because it's a Laura Cardinal mystery set in Tucson, not because it's part of this Flight 12 series. However, I am unfamiliar with the other 11 authors and protagonists, so I think I might try some out to see what's going on -- and to find some new mystery writers. This shortish story is an interesting read, as Black takes us back to characters we've met before. She plays on the good-and-bad-twisting-and-writhing personality changes that lay, usually dormant, inside people, and makes one think hard about how fragile we can all be - without even realizing it. I didn't want this particular "bad guy" to go downhill! Ah well, I'd love to see what's going to happen with this (probably) ill-fated flight!
The second contribution to the Flight 12 series brings us a LAURA CARDINAL THRILLER, by J. Carson Black. As usual Black begins weaving the mystery when you turn the first page of the story. In the second paragraph, you have a mystery man who seems on edge while boarding Flight 12. We immediately want to know who this man is and what role he is going to have this adventure with Laura Cardinal.
Black’s new book, A LAURA CARDINAL THRILLER, begins building momentum quickly. J Carson Black has always created interesting characters with great back stories. She gives us just enough information that we have to keep reading to find out what happens next. She introduces us to the mysterious person at the gate. We meet Payton, a young Mexican woman who seeks Cardinal at her gym. She asks Cardinal to investigate her death. Cardinal is taken by surprise when Payton explains she is sure someone is going to kill her. Payton surprises Cardinal further when she finds out it was Steve Lawson who told Payton about Laura investigative skills.
Immediately, Black has Cardinal look back five years (Black’s, THE DEVIL’S HOUR) when she arrested Lawson for killing little Jenny Carmichael. As Cardinal remembers, Steve Lawson’s lawyer gets the murder charge dropped. Laura is still angry that Lawson got off without any punishment and no jail time. Jenny Carmichael didn't receive any justice when they released Steve Lawsen. Fans of Laura Cardinal know the tenacity Black has instilled in Laura’s personality. Laura Cardinal is always looking to find justice victims like Carmichael.
The story pace continues to move towards Laura and her partner investigating a freak accident with the drunk college student going down the hill. They move the dead college student's car and discovered a second car. The second car belonged to Payton, finding her body in her car. Black’s old fans and new fans will all be on pins and needles. What new twists is Black going to throw at us next.. Fans are still wondering what the clues mean.
The pace was of this story is perfect, and we are kept wondering why murder Payton and who is responsible. No spoilers pointing out subtle clues and there is no such thing as coincidences. Are fans alert enough to pick up on the clues causing Laura doubt so of the obvious. What did they find at Payton’s home and what did her landlord tell Cardinal about who she was dating. The ending is way out of left field and one of Black’s best surprise ending
I enjoyed how the suspects of who was responsibility for Payton’s death and the planning that went into finding the killers. This story was a true spellbinder and we don’t know who is boarding Flight 12 from J. Carson Black LAURA CARDINAL THRILLER, When fans see who is boarding Flight 12, they will want to buy a ticket and board/
Black has helped Laura Cardinal grow, and we get a taste of how Laura Cardinal, is a DPS investigator who never gives up. Black’s fans will need to write her asking for more Laura Cardinal. The fans see Cardinal enjoying her personal life and s happy with Matt. Cardinal likes her partner Anthony, and we see her confidence strong as she does not need her dead partner, Frank, to build her confidence she just like to visit with him.
J. Carson Black hit this one out of the park. Black's story is a must read and a great second installment of the Flight 12 project. If each segment continues enhancing the Flight 12 excitement, I can’t imagines what the next ten installments will bring. I have no problem giving this J. Carson Black story a 5 star ranking.

Payton Hatcher says to Laura Cardinal. She knows that Laura is a detective with Arizona DPS (Department of Public Safety), she had seen her on TV one time. It was her she wanted to cover the investigation into her death, that is why she approached her at the gym they both work out at. Laura did her best to convince Payton to seek help down other avenues but that was like talking to the wall.
It wasn't until a few weeks later that Laura took Payton's concerns to heart. Laura was assigned a case with her partner Anthony, an accident scene, a car went down into a canyon at a hairpin curve on a mountain road. It was not that car that got her attention, it was the car underneath that did. There was the body of a woman in that car, a young woman, with a bullet hole at her temple. Her name was Payton Hatcher. JCarson Black tied one investigation into another so well that by the time...(never mind, you're going to have to read for yourself. :-)
I love the seamless way JCarson Black gave just enough back story to the reader that allowed Laura Cardinal to be a well developed character from the get go. Laura's tenacity and gut instincts attracted me to her, making her become alive in my minds eye. "Flight 12: A Laura Cardinal Thriller" played like a short movie in my mind. With enough twists and turns that held me to the story and kept me turning the page. There were only two minute things that I would like to have seen more of. A longer book and a bit more info on her ghostly mentor. Sorry, no spoiler alerts here!
I promise you that through all of Laura's investigations, through the multiple directions they take her, you will become anxious to reach the end but at the same time want the story to continue once you do. I liken it to a roller coaster, I love roller coasters, and this book left me with that same feeling. Hurry and get yourself caught up, otherwise you will miss the flight of a lifetime. Happy Reading!!
The second installment of the Flight 12 series has the main character of J. Carson Black' s novels, Laura Cardinal, face an old nemesis again. Laura received a strange request from a woman who works out at the same gym. The request was for Laura to find out the woman's killer after she would die. Sure enough the woman is found murdered. The prime suspect is the aforementioned nemesis of Laura's. This premise makes for an entertaining book that has plenty of surprises, including who is the passenger on Flight 12.
Having never read one of Ms. Black' s books before, I was a little lost in the back references to Laura's past. Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed this novella and will continue reading this series to see how this all comes together on Flight 12.
This book is part of a series : Flight 12. I loved the Laura Cardinal books . In this story reappears a character from a previous Laura Cardinal book, I will not say anything else , it is a thriller, after all .
