This book isn't quite as good as the first one, being much shorter and taking place mostly away from the Yokai Clan's house. Only a handful of the enormous cast introduced in volume one is carried over into this volume as main characters, with small cameo spots from some others. Story wise the plot is wrapped up from book one with the rat-like yokai Kyuso clan. Now the Gyuki clan are after Nura. He goes along with his friends as they go into the mountains where Kiyotsugu, the wealthy boy, and head of the "Paranormal Patrol" takes them to his family's lavish home. Here they leave the girls in the hot springs while they go exploring for yokai. Of course Nura is just along to make sure no one gets hurt. The Gyuki clan plan to wipe them all out then Gyuki himself will take out Nura. Lots of battling and excitement follow along with humour. There are some tense moments and what Gyuki's actual plan *is*, reveals itself at the end as he goads Nura on. Great series with humour, action, great characters and a never ending supply of 'bad guys'. Ending mid-action, the wait for vol. 3 is close enough (June) to keep me excited.
This volume was such a great continuation of this series. It did what I had hoped it would do when I read volume 1. It improved on the story, the characters I was unsure about, made me love the characters I was already in love with even more, and somehow even the art looks even more incredible. I like how Nura is a very proactive character, but also tries to be the voice of reason in situations. He will not hesitate to protect the people he loves/cares about because despite not approving for what yokai are “supposed” to stand for he loves his clan and thinks of all the yokai he grew up with as his family.
On that same note, I like how it’s being brought to his attention that not taking on this responsibility is leaving these very same individuals in a very vulnerable and volatile situation given the world they live in. So I continue to be fascinated with this series and I’m kind of happy I’m reading it now since it’s completed. Looking forward to volume 3!
Transitions abruptes. Art inégal.
It stayed pretty much as what I said in the first volume. There's a little less comedy this time, though, which I think hurt it for me. I wanted more laughs like the doll chapter in the first volume, but it stayed more serious in this one.
Nura volume 2 made for an okay, par-for-the-course read. Not too exciting, nothing stood out as particularly great or bad. It just kind of is.
It get's better than the first one with more action, more interesting settings, but the characters are still boring and the drawing could be significantly better. And I still think that the style would work way better in an adult Beserk way than this childish shonen way with some pretty impressive and almost scary panels in between.
The Nura book series is what happens when Japanese spirits and monsters create a Yakuza like organization and more or less try to avoid scuffles with humanity. As such although there are some freaky parts and at least some murder (oh and at least one public bath scene) you may be surprised by it only being rated Teen but since theses are not the focus of the series it is not classified to bad. You should read it first to make sure you are comfortable giving it to a younger reader if these things can make you uncomfortable.
Ahh Rats... with his friends captured by the Kyusa Clan Rikuo finds it easy to give in to their demands to forsaken his future role in as the third supreme commander of his own clan. After all the poor boy is a quarter yokai himself and his disillusionment about yoki and human relations make him squeamish about taking over the clan some day. However his grandfather will have none of that and as Rikou escapes into the garden and he learns something else about himself. Now Rikou with the 100 demon parade (its in japanese mythology if you want to read up on it) must travel to the den of the clan of rat yokai to save the girls (after all there is a scene where they attack an innocent woman and it insinuates she is going to be eaten all night long.)
Then it is back to high school life for Rikuo and his friends as rumblings in the clan about Rikuo's future in the clan. The Yokai club is making plans for a trip up to a mountain where yokai have been rumored to be. Luckily one of the club members has a family estate where they can stay as they explore the mountain. Unfortunately there is real danger hidden out in the mountain and Rikuo better be careful as he discovers who has been making his life difficult recently.
My favorite part of the book is when the group is on a bullet train going toward the mountain and Aotabo is with a motorcycle gang complaining that he wanted to travel with Rikuo but considering his rough appearance he had to settle on riding there with his bike gang declaring "Don't let the bullet train beat you!!!" to his gang as they ride on. :)
Nura: Rise of the Yôkai Clan, Volume 2: Rikuo vs. Gyuki picks up right from the end of Volume 1, concluding the Kyuso Clan storyline. The battle was exciting, and I'm really enjoying Rikuo getting comfortable in his Yôkai skin. Personally, I cannot wait for that side to take over because I enjoy the scenes more when he's yôkai rather than when he is in human form.
There was one thing that puzzled me with the artwork.
At the end of the battle with the Kyuso Clan, it is revealed there are more traitorous bastards in the midst. This time around, the bad guys are really fascinating and pretty intimidating. When the Kiyojuji Paranormal Patrol unknowingly ventures to Nura's nemesis' territory, the story gets heated with lots of exciting action.
The ending does leave off on a cliffhanger and I'm quite anxious to see what happens next. I think Gyuki is a complex character, so perhaps there is more going on with him that we have yet to see. Something tells me he might not be as bad as he appears.
I liked this action-packed volume a bit more than the first. I'm enjoying Rikuo's character's growth and I'm really excited to see him develop further. This was an exciting volume with just enough humor thrown in to keep it well-rounded. I hope there will be more Aotabo in the next volume. He just wasn't in this one nearly enough. Can't wait for the next volume!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I am enjoying this series a great deal. I was expecting to like it, but not as much as I have been. I'm really looking forward to seeing what comes next. Rikuo gets attacked by yokai fairly often since he is in the position to become the third leader of the Nura Syndicate. However, he still doesn't want to be the Third, at least, not when he's in his day form. In his night form, Rikuo is determined to become the Third. Some yokai don't care what form he can take, they want him out of the way because they think he's weak. Rikuo would happily step down, but everyone in the main family is against it.
We get to see Rikuo transform a few more times in this volume. His transformations always happen at night and usually happen when one of his human friends is in danger. It looks like he will transform if one of his clan members is in trouble as well.
Right when I want to abandon this series a chapter like this will happen where Yokai Rikuo rocks! And at least the boy is starting to admit the Yokai Rikuo exists even if only to himself! He still annoys me but you gotta love Yokai Rikuo and how he handles the rat leader, the Sakura bowl and the fire!
My favorite frame so far is when Yokai Rikuo and his parade appear in the rat's territory then a few pages later when the parade and the rats clash!
A great villain arrives on the scene too (Gyuki)! Love Karasu's sons (bird guys)! Both play a big part in this volume and why I want to keep giving this series a chance. Gyuki really grew on me too and I love when characters like him turn out this way.
BOTTOM LINE: Love Yokai Rikuo...jury still out for the human 3/4!
this chapter was good. rikuo and his friends go to the the old school bulding to investigate yokai. kana-chan says that its nonsense but kiyotsugu-kun says that is damn sure that yokai exist in this modern day world and there chances that they might be haunting the old school building. and he is quite right...
Rikuo Nura is a protagonist that draws you close and keeps you close. You begin to think like him, and even come to support him. This 2nd volume definitely increases the pace in this manga and I loved it.
There's actually a fighting scene here and more acceptable antagonist characters (compared to the previous, not general good shounen standard, heheh).
I'm reading a heck of a lot of manga right now. This one is okay, and bit intriguing, but not good enough to keep reading right now. Maybe sometime in the future.
