Tigger Flint and Thomas Flame shared an instant mutual hate for one another from the day they met in sixth grade. Their dislike grew into competition and rivalry throughout high school as they were stuck in the same honors classes and played the same sports. That hatred and rivalry followed them into adulthood as one became a cop and the other a fireman.
Sharing the same haunt, Guns & Hoses, gave everyone from both departments plenty of opportunity to witness their personal war. Being forced back onto the football field for charity gave both men another venue for their hatred and rivalry to make an appearance.
But those feelings weren't the only emotions in attendance and the winner of game could just be both of them.

While I did not care for this tale of rivals-to-lovers, I expect there are some that will gladly overlook what I found distasteful just to get to the sex. 'Cuz the sex was rough, angry and brutal. I love that, yes sir, but when there is no emotion behind it, it's just plain 'ol sex to me. And you can get plain 'ol sex anywhere on the WWW for free.
The MCs in this book, Tommy Flame and Tigger Flint (seriously) were together for the sex and for the sex only for 95% of the book. Both of their code of ethics' left a LOT to be desired. They treated each other horribly and their fellow hook-ups and co-works and friends just as badly, if not worse at times. I never once felt a flicker of emotion in either one of them.
So, not for me, but if you want hot, angry sex and not much else, go for it and enjoy!
Cannot recommend.
PS: Those wanting firefighter and/or police action in your books, you do get BOTH here. Wasn't enough to sway my opinion of the book, but it may be enough to temp you to read it!
Flame and Tigger are literally clones of one another, except for their occupation and eye color there was NOTHING to distinguish them from one another. They are the same height, the same build, live in the same closet, are both tops, both alpha-holes, both absolutely hypersexed sporting erections when the wind blows in the right direction and able to come and come and come... 3 orgasms a fuck is the norm for these guys... They may as well have been the same person!
They have been "enemies" since middle school for no apparent reason. This absolutely ridiculous feud continues into their adulthood for no good reason either. When we meet them, they are around 30 and still feel the need to shove each other in bars, call each other names and be generally horrible toward one another...
Then they start fucking, and sure they have some rough and tumble sex, but since that was all they ever did for 95% of the book I couldn't really get into it. Especially not coupled with the fact that they fucked without a condom, only to then disclose that one guy had hep b. How he contracted this was never revealed, in actual fact I have no idea why it was mentioned when it never played any type of factor in the book - they keep on fucking without condoms regardless and everything is apparently honky dory. Oh, and don't get me started on going bare back, then pulling your dick out and stuffing it down the throat of your partner - I'm not squeamish, but....
Ok, ok, you go with it, hoping there will be a pay off at the end, but no! There's nothing! The book just kind of ends.
Cannot recommend, unless all you want is hot uniformed guys fucking constantly. If it is, then this book is just what you are looking for.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Talk about Hot Men in Uniform! Throw in 2 childhood enemies with sudden sexual tension. Add to that some major flag football frotagge and you get one steamy read. Tig and Flame were off the charts yummy!!
My only complaint with this book was that for the first 50% we had to read the word "rival" way too often. We get it. They didn't like each other until now.
Detailed Spoilers - I want to remember the specifics of why this book was so awful
This is not a vampire novel. Neither of them are vampires. or werewolves. sorry. That, in particular, is neither a positive or a negative.
There is moaning groaning and punching. Redress is used to mean to put clothes back on. Per say is used in stead of per se. It goes on....I kept being ejected from the story by the clangers.
Also the sex is horrible. At one point they have unprotected sex with no lube. And one guy has hep B it turns out. Another time they go at it, still minus a condom with insufficient lube. Then the guy who was topping unprotected, sticks his dick in the other guys' mouth. I won't be reading this author again.
The bar G&H is a bar considered common ground for cops and firefighters both. They go there to spin their tales, drink their beers or simply have some party time and really a place they all could feel safe and just be who they are: rough and tough guys and gals whose chosen career was full of stress and a lot of danger.
Tigger or Tig Flint is a cop. He is huge, played quarterback in high school and a tough guy. He is danger personified and can be trusted to keep the backs of his team safe. He is a walking time bomb, however, whenever one Thomas Flame walks into the same bar and join his ladder buddies. Flame, a firefighter, is another huge guy and played on the opposite line in football with Tig. Literally an explosion waiting to happen since day one of their meeting all those years ago, like a flint strikes to flame is what best describes these two and everyone knows to either keep them apart or be incinerated.
Then the charity football happened. And the flint sparked the fire that set the flame to the kindle and from then on, I was not able to let this go.
This was HOT! I have read quite a few tough men falling in love with each other and the erotica would set the pages to flame but most are always laced with sappy romantic lines. This one is just as erotic and yet there is none of the expected sweetness or sappiness found in romance stories. This is a tale between two tough men who were not afraid to say and do what they wanted with and to each other. They had hated each others' guts since they were kids and now they fell into each other and found their equal partners. Quite a slap on their respective faces but once they did find each other, they were not willing to let go.
There is the expected drama, some angst and a few scenes that placed both men in danger. I really liked the fact that the author wrote these two men to be men: silent, taking for granted the dangerous work of the other, and free to play rough and be rough when the time warrants it. Men. Quite a different read but I just fell in love with Tig and Flame and they made me want to dream of them.
However!
This ends on a note that rings: SERIES! There is still a lot to be told and seeing this is sort of a spin off of another series this author pens, then I am all for it. Love my cops. Love my firefighters. Love Tig and Flame.
I was hesitant to read this because one of my Good read friends gave it a low rating but I figured what the hell and read it anyway. OMG so glad I did, this started out with hottie fire fighter Flame and hottie detective Tig with tons of animosity towards each other . Throughout the book it turned from that to curiosity to attraction to lust to something that could possibly continue into a relationship. This was definitely a truly hot and exciting read!!!!! :-) First time I've read this author and I'm looking into what else she has written. The only complaint I have is I thought the ending could have been a little more complete, I just felt like there should have been more to it than use your imagination to the end of Tig and Flame.
DNF at 65% sadly. I couldn't handle the chaotic POV or the strange song lyric obsession in the writing. It seemed that there just wasn't actual chemistry between the MC's other than simple lust and there was minimal character development.
They had an instant dislike of each other from the moment they met. It was only made worse as their mother's became best friends, they were about the same size, both smart and on the football team. They kept being forced together and dislike turned to hate.
One became a cop, the other a firefighter so the rivalry just grew.
But.. hate and love are so close together as emotions that once they finally took a moment to really look at one another something was bound to change and change it did!
I really enjoyed the pace of this book. For the first ten chapters the sexual tension builds and then in the last ten chapters I found that it was worth the wait. Lots and lots of hot sweaty sex. Like another reviewer, I found myself wanting a little more closure at the end but from reading other books by Brenda Cothern, I know that she may have have left us hanging because she is planning on another book with these characters. Overall, a good read that I would read again.
Wtf with the ending? It was rushed and we never even find out why the Fck Tigger was so mad at Flame, when Flame never did shit. Tigger was fckin dumb.
The book was rather well written. I really liked the sex scenes and the falling in love process.
I may have forgiven the weak reason for the rivalry, or the lame character names, but unfortunately, the author chose too many unoriginal and overdone plot twists or whatever you may call it... Like the whole "suddenly getting caught kissing another person misunderstanding" or the "Omg you almost died and made me realise my love for you" situation. I also didn't like the conveniently fitting lyrics from the background music, which happened way too often.
I loved the enemy to lover aspect. The fact that both main characters are public servants (firefighter and cop) makes it spicy to read. The mental issues Tig had added depth that was interesting as I am sure that would happen in real life too. While I was able to read this in beta format the finished product still managed to keep me in my chair until I finished it (again). Great read!
I have certain buttonS that need pushing and this book pushed ALL of them. Again! I loved that these two mc's were big men, one a cop the other a firefighter. They both have strong solid frames THAT MAKE NOISE ("Whoom!") when they slam into each other to get their freak on. (Had a mini-orgasm just typing that.) This is a true favourite of mine!
The storyline was great but its just to devolve into a smut/porn book. Too much sex; not enough story. I expect a romance enemy to lover with a couple sex scenes but all the sex just made me fast forward.
A good read. Hot sex and some emotion. Sexy fireman meets sexy police detective. The connection seemed a bit off to start with but it built. Could have had more. Sex wasnt enough to make it a great read
I actually really enjoyed this book. However, there's a lot of head hopping and I found myself having to go back and read to figure out who was talking. I should probably knock off a star for that and the cheesy names, but I devoured this book so it stays a 5
Outdated writing...I have no patience anymore for the mad jumping between POV-s from one sentence to the next. And was it necessary to implement song lyrics to every step the heroes took in their relationship?
There aren't enough words to describe everything that I found wrong with this book. Maybe with the help of a decent editor it could have been an okay read but as it stands I had to force myself to finish it. I don't recommend this to anyone.
Really good story with great characters. The only thing I did not like was the ending. I hate abrupt endings that leaving me totally unsatisfied and feeling like the story was unfinished.
Flashback much? Why do that to your audience? Why?!?! Why do that to me?!? It got to the point I didn’t know who was who and for a while I didn’t care. I was too focused on keeping up with the stupid flashbacks. Soooo...I noticed this book was available on audible romance club so even though I like to read I tried it there. Guess what flashbacks suck even when you’re an active listener. I just didn’t get these two at all.
The editing was atrocious (wreaked of smoke) and the characters were more like cardboard cut outs. What really got me, though, was the rampant sexism and prejudice in the book. There was one delightful quote about a woman co-worker: She was not a beauty but attractive enough that someone wouldn't have to put a flag over her face to fuck her for old glory.
I kept going after that one, because I know some men who would think that, even if I call them on it every single time. I even kept going a little after this next one, but it bugged me to no end, so I gave it up, especially considering the writing was crap.
Location 589: "Like she would say yes to a good old Polish boy like me," Brostowski laughed. The man was constantly trying to play down his intelligence with the Polish references but Flame knew better, it was just a defense mechanism.
Why did he have to say Polish? Why couldn't it be a "good old firefighting boy" or "good old short boy" or "good old boy" or "good old boy with Dumbo ears"? Or, if it had to be something else, why couldn't it have been Irish, or German, or Russian, or Spanish, or Jewish? Actually, why did Flame have to specify it was Brostowski's intelligence the man was referencing? Give me a break. I'm not even a little bit Polish, and I was offended.
ETA: I had a whole bunch of other stereotypes that I had put in, but just looking at them made me mad, so I took them out.
This could have been good, had so much potential, but the sudden end didn't make any sense. Also the overwhelming biphobia and stereotypes killed a lot of the vibe about it. Not looking forward to read the next book.
I must just start by telling you that every time I see this book on my kindle I misread the title and wonder where the book called Guns & Hoes came from!
This is the second book I have read by Brenda Cothern this week and I must say I really like her stories and the way she tells them. She gives us very real characters and believable story lines and some very hot sex!
Tigger Flint and Thomas Flame are sworn enemies and have been since childhood. They hate each other. It seems they cannot even be in the same vicinity as each other without barbed comments or threats of a fight. Even though they are snarky and mean at the start you can’t help falling for either of them from the very first page.
Their lives seem destined to keep on crossing paths. At school they were always in the same classes and on the same football team. As adults they see each other at the local pub called Guns and Hoses. Tigger is a detective and Flame is a fireman and G&H is their waterhole after a long shift where they can go to destress and kick back with people who understand how their day has been.
When a charitable football tournament is set up between the cops and firemen Tigger and Flame end up as their team’s respective captains and everyone hopes they can at least be civil with each other for a good cause. It is often said there is a very fine line between love and hate - when Flame first spots Tigger training his team it’s not love he feels but there is very definitely lust.
Tigger is completely flummoxed with Flames flirting and is more than a little dubious of his intentions to begin with. Before we got to them hooking up I would have bet that Flame would have been the one to second guess what was happening between them but I would have been wrong. Flame throws himself into getting his man once his mind is made up but Tigger is wary for all sorts of reasons. Even he has to admit eventually that you can only have a casual hook up with someone so many times before it becomes something else, and it is the something else that has Tigger running in the opposite direction.
It is not all lust. There is a story line of drug dealing going on in the back ground as well as keeping up with Flame in his role as a fire fighter. The story is well developed and I couldn’t put it down until I had finished it.
In the end only one question remains and only two men can answer it “What are we doing Flame?”
If you like hot firemen and police officers, mixed in with a enemies to lovers theme, then you will enjoy Brenda Cothern's "Guns & Hoses." Fireman Tommy Flame and cop Tigger Flint have despised each other since sixth grade. But when an inter-departmental flag football tournament throws the men together sparks fly! Cue some really sexy hate sex, and as Tigger and Tommy spend more time together feelings develop.
This is the fourth Brenda Cothern book I've reviewed and my favorite. I hope the author will continue with this series, as it was a fun (and hot) read. So, if page-melting sex scenes between two stubborn yet lovable guys who like to save people in their spare time is your thing, pick up this book ASAP! :)
All I can say is that I'm a sucker for enemies to lovers storyline and they're in law enforcement to boot. With names like Tigger and Flame, I knew what kind of story I was going to get and rated it accordingly. I love that it didn't get overly cutesy just because they were together and all asshole behavior didn't almost immediately went out the window. The reason that this wasn't perfect read was because the excessive use of pop song lyrics to convey a feeling and it was never really explained why they has bad relationship in the first place. Or maybe I glaze over that scene to get to smexy scenes. (4.5 stars)
As with I.N.E.T., I shouldn't have loved this book. I'm finding a trend here with Ms. Cothern. She can write an a**hole like nobody's business! And I love every single one of them even though I know I shouldn't. I loved both of these MCs, but Tig pushes all of my buttons. Every. Single. One.
Lots of hot sex. Could use a bit of editing to weed out the repetitiveness. Really wanted to smack Tig at least half the time. Wish we would have seen a bit more past where the story left off. Narrator's voice was sexy.
