Unmasked: Volume Two

Rate this book
The continuation of the Unmasked Series from New York Times bestselling author Cassia Leo.

Who can be trusted? Who’s wearing a mask?

I left my former life – and my mask – behind.

Running from a past where I was born unloved. A past where I was betrayed by love.

Running from an organization with limitless power and stealth. Running for my life.

I never expected to find love on the run. Not in a tiny seaside town on an island in the middle of nowhere.

Not without my mask.

But it seems as if my sad story is being rewritten with someone else’s pen. But whose pen is it?

This question haunts me day and night. And I get my answer on a perfectly decadent evening. When I come home to find my bedroom perfumed with the scent of death.

He’s here.

If you're like me, there's no way you couldn't read this follow-up after the way book 1 left off. The shocking ending seemed to come out of nowhere and I wanted some answers, so I dove straight into book 2. Thankfully, this book does provide some answers and explains Alex's shocking actions at the end of book 1.

Now hiding for different reasons, Alex leaves L. A. and turns a new leaf. She's no longer lurking in the shadows, trying to hide her face from the world. Instead, she does the unexpected and hides in plain sight. Along the way, she meets people and slowly acclimates herself to a much more outgoing, public lifestyle.

Going by the name Alyssa, she poses as a photographer and quickly draws the attention of her neighbor, Nick. She's not over Daimon, not by a long shot...but she wants to be. Trying to scrub him from her mind, she uses Nick as a distraction.

I'm partial to heroines that are loyal, so I was pretty peeved with Alex/Alyssa for most of this book. She was too wishy washy for my taste and came off a bit slutty to me. I mean, for God's sake woman! Take time to change the sheets between men! The fact that the sex sucked did give me some small satisfaction, I have to admit.

Alex/Alyssa suspects that Daimon may still be alive. As she tries to come to terms with her conflicted feelings for Daimon, she begins to sense his presence and suspect that she's again being followed. Alyssa is in more danger than she imagined and begins to question the possibility that Daimon was telling her the truth. Eventually, she must decide on a course of action. She can face the threat head-on, or keep running.

Like the first book, this one was quick and entertaining. I listened to the audiobook and it was great. The puzzle pieces are starting to fall into place and I plan on starting book3 right away. I can't wait to see how this works out. One thing's certain, I'm definitely team Daimon!

So glad we got some answers in this one. Yay!

The first book left me dizzy, confused, and hungry for an explanation. The second volume has given back some my wits that were taken away. Although this wasn't as crazy and perplexing as the first, it was still pretty suspenseful and unique.

I feel like I am smack dab in the middle of a David Lynch movie.

Lost highway photo: Lost Highway road.gif

I didn't give anything away in the last book, and I am going to do the same with this one. There is honestly nothing that can be said. You just have to read for yourself. Sorry. :(

Although a lot of the mysterious holes have been filled, this one left me...unsatisfied. The rush was still there from the crazy revelations, but something is missing. The writing is making me feel as though I am skipping things. Hard to explain. Questions are cleared up, but the author writes it as if you already knew, and then explains it in better detail later.

See what this has done to me? I make no sense. LOL

This one definitely fucks with your head. I am hoping the last book knocks my socks off, because I wasn't as impressed with this one as the first. I like the heroine, but still feel no connection with her or the (anti)hero. I also had a few moments where I thought a couple of things were cliché.

Really photo: tumblr_ma74ssrxwR1r0ujqvo2_500.gif

Don't get me wrong, this is a pretty fascinating ride, and I enjoyed it. I think the first book set the bar pretty high, and was hard to stay at the same level or top. Obviously I have to see where everything is going.

❝   «Pronta a giocare, chérie? »

Che. Lascia. Senza. Parole.

An intriguing, suspenseful, sexy serial full of unexpected turns.

Do not read review if you’ve not yet read Unmasked 1. Otherwise, this review is spoiler free.

Volume 2 picks up soon after the shocking end of Volume 1, with Alex on the run. She’s still reeling from what she’d done, from the truth she’d discovered, for what she was able to feel for Daimon. Now, she’s determined to live a life unmasked, as she figures out her next move. When she arrives in a small seaside town, she takes on a new persona, one who does not hide in the dark or under thick makeup, rather one who is confident during the light of day. And one who cannot seem to forget the man that taught her to love. The man she killed.

“… everything changed the night I met Detective Daimon Rousseau. He didn’t just change me into a woman. He changed me into a woman with a purpose. And my purpose was to make him pay for what he did to my father. Out of the darkness and into the light, a new Alex was reborn as Alyssa.”

Alex’s resoluteness in forgetting Daimon is entirely futile. The more she tries to forget him, the more thoughts of him permeate every second of her day, even as her heart battles between hating him and loving him and missing him. She even seems to smell his scent in the air, his presence with her still somehow. But then she meets Nick, who decidedly is not Daimon, but who is handsome and alluring in his own right.

She is attracted to him, but she is still suspicious. Her past has ingrained her to be that way. I found that really interesting. She questioned everything and everyone, her mind hard-wired to to do so. She couldn’t just be. But was Nick who he said he was? Did he want to kill her? Was he working for Daimon? Was there a possibility Daimon was alive? So many questions haunted her.

“My purpose is to save her. To love her. And I will stop at nothing to do just that.”

And just when she feels her guard begin to slip, surprises await and trouble finds her. Truths are revealed, including her own and the she must make a choice. Because suddenly her past is invading her present once more, and as we move into the final installment, we see that Alex has to face that past head on. The time for retribution is upon her. But once again, she must figure out who she can trust.

“I love you, Alex. I’ll always love you… In the light and in the dark. With a mask or without. I love everything about you.”

What I have loved most about this series is that I never knew what to expect. Cassia is an expert storyteller and she weaves the story in directions I didn’t anticipate. I will say I found it difficult to get inside of Alex’s head… understand her motivations. It surprised me to see her fall for a man like Nick, particularly since thoughts of Daimon were ever present. But in the end, I loved how it wrapped up. It was that perfect, edgy, non-typical happy ever after that was right for the characters.

The Unmasked serial is comprised of three volumes (below) and is a great, quickly read series for readers who love mystery and intrigue, sexiness and love, action and suspense!

Volume 2 is even better than volume 3! While we learned about Alex, Daimen and the other key players of the story in volume one and were left with a OMG moment, book 2 goes in a whole other direction and expands the story line even more. Do not read this review if you haven't read volume 1 as it may contain spoilers.

So Alex did the deed and left the country. She is finally tired of living behind a mask, so she takes it off to become the woman that she really is. Sure she can still kill a grown man without thinking twice about it, however would like to try a be a bit "normal" with her colored hair, eyes and the whole shebang. She picks a small Mexican island, rents a house and continues to try and blend in with the neighbors, even stepping out of her comfort zone a bit.

In stepping out, Alex meets some new friends, ones that have you wondering who they really are while reading along. You are on pins and needles the whole time waiting to see who is going to jump out of the woodwork at her. With the lies surrounding her, Alex just doesn't know who she can trust and the minute she lets that guard down, she finds out the hard way she trusted the wrong person again.

These books are very hard to review without spoiling crucial plot lines. Just know that in volume 2 Cassia Leo keeps you high strung as you reach for the end the entire time. I cannot finish these books fast enough to see what in the heck is going to happen. Of course it ends with the mother of all cliffhangers, (one I was actually hoping for this time) and we are patiently waiting for book 3 to arrive. They are well written with enough sexy and action to keep you busy. Great series so far!

It was miles better than Volume One! The writing was engaging and it cleared some things up about who was who in the book.

The only thing I had an issue with was the main character, Alex. I didn't understand her actions.

I think she is not entirely clear in the head, sorry. She escapes to an island and the first thing she does is hook up with her neighbour?

I didn't trust Nick for a second and I guess Alex didn't either, so WHY she had to sleep with him? It was stupid!

But as I mentioned earlier, I enjoyed this Volume more than the first one because it was less overwhelming, but still kept me on edge. We even get to read the story from a different person's POV for awhile. I LOVED that! We FINALLY find out what really happened in the first volume and why.

THAT ENDING!!! I need the next Volume now!

UNMASKED 2 (UNMASKED SERIES) by CASSIA LEO

The mystery and twists of this story is what drives me to want to read more and more from this series. I loooooove it!

In this second installment of Cassia Leo's UNMASKED SERIES, Cassia Leo delivers again. She maintained the mystery that I love in book 1 and gave us more twist than I can ever imagine and probably she will give us more of that in book 3. Questions readers have in book 1 was finally answered but then there are more questions ahead. IDK what to expect, I'm just gonna take everything as it is and enjoy the awesome feel in reading serials like this one. I have been a fan of Cassia Leo since book 1 of her SHATTERED HEARTS series and this serial is one of her great works. She definitely knows what she is doing and she is doing it really, really good. How she writes stories that is so enticing and makes you devour it in one sitting is a pure talent.

There is a new character in this book and sadly, less of Daimon but more of Alex. Still the story is as good as book 1. Cassia Leo gave us Alex's side that we didn't get to see in the first book and gave us something to look forward to. There were many revelations and still more mystery than in book 1 that I am sure fans like me will get the answers in book 3. I cannot wait! I bet the reunion of Alex and Daimon will be mind-blowing. :)

Answers, new twists and more suspense…

This is the second volume of a three part serial and should be read in series order.

Alex has left the security of the darkness and stepped into the light, embracing what she is and she is so out of her comfort zone. And who can she trust? She should trust no one but in order to blend in you have to have a semblance of trust in people and she is off her game or so it appears. The one she trusts should not be trusted and provides no satisfaction.

Though Alex ran far from home she still feels she is being watched and she is. But by whom is the question. The answer should not surprise her for she has regretted her actions and come to understand the meaning of her feelings. We do learn many answers and this reader was pleased with developments towards the end of this volume and not totally surprised for their business is not yet done, and they truly are kindred spirits.

We do learn some answers as we ride the new twists that unfold and are left wondering the outcome of a certain meeting in the cliff hanger ending. You have to ask yourself who will survive this time? And there is so much more at stake now. We shall see come volume three as all the threads the author has woven are finally strung together for us.

"Ready to play, chérie?"

I totally enjoyed that quote! However I'm disappointed to say that this one did NOT do it for me. It was just so wrong; Alex with a new dude, the way she acted, just the whole development of the story.

The first book ended with a surprise and this one continues right from that point. I thought the story of Alex and Daimon could have ended that way with an added chapter or two to tie it all up because this one seemed like a different story. I really did not like how it all played out. Things were all over the place, the plotline, the main characters relationship, the ending, all of it.

Since I did finish it I will give it 2 Stars. I don't even know why I'm going to spend any time with the third volume other than the urge I have to finish what I started. Off to the finale!

As the second book in the Unmasked series this one takes off right where the first one left off. Alex has completely changed her name, and is now out of hiding technically. She's in a new place, and wants to start over even though she's not sure if she really killed Daimon or not she knows she's is in for a fight for her life. And then when unexpected things come up she isn't sure what to do at all now...

I didn't really like this one at all. I hated the way Alex acted in this one. She seemed like a totally different person, and I hated the fact that she was technically with another guy. It really made me mad! But I did like the fact that we got to see a different person's point of view in the book. And I can't wait to read the next one!

I don't understand the focus of this book being the fact she's a "Chimera" (if you don't know what that is, you can find out here
Supposedly it's mainly genetic and has very few visual effects so for me, it's pretty unrealistic to try and imagine her to be some ugly woman as she's portrayed to be... In the first book, I could understand why she hid away with the way she was brought up but now I'm reading 2nd this book the whole 'coming out' it's really not doing anything for me.
I'll probably read book 3 to satisfy my OCD for finishing stories but I hope the next book is better.

This was so so good! Part 2 picked up right where the first one ended off. It was more intense and exciting. It gripped me from the first page until the shocking end. Cassia takes you on an exhilarating ride. We find out quite a few things in this installment and I'm so excited to see where it goes in the next and final installment. I can't write more because I don't want to give anything away. You need to experience this amazing read yourself. It is gripping and will have you on the edge of your seat.

She def was more "who cares" this book and it was awesome to read! I don't want to give anything away, you just need to read this! Short, quick read!

Oh My!!!

I just can't put this series down. I never know what's gonna happen next. I'm beginning to feel like Alex does. The mention of anything unusual I start questioning. Every person she comes in contact with I think may be after her, lol. I need to move right along to book 3 to find out what the ending is gonna look like.

Another super short but intriguing read. I am not 100% sure what is supposed to be going on but I don't really care. I do think that this should be one book not three though. This one felt a bit like a filler before the "real" story. Looking forward to finding out what happens though so I am off to read Volume 3.

This is not your typical Cassia story. This is not a sweet romance. This is not a stand-alone. You must read all three books for an ending. There is plenty of violence, intrigue, unique characters and crude sex so if you do not like any of these things do not read. If you love reading stories that are just that, stories written to take your mind on an unbelievable, exciting, journey of a young woman thrown in to an unbelievable situation and trained as a super weapon without knowing why this is for you. Just remember that not all fairy tales are about the good prince and princess!

First chapter started strong and certainly piqued my interest. Then, like a balloon deflating, there was nothing left but a flabby, listless piece of plastic for the remainder of this crap called a book.

I get that this weird chick has a serious complex and has been held prisoner in her parent's basement for the majority of her life, but come on... really! She trained to kill and be a total hard ass that's detached from people & she is going to let some strange Mf'er that she knows is a) lying b) shot some dude in front of her c) is acting like a total creeper in and let him screw her after a couple of 5 minute convos in the dark! Shit no! I can't buy that on an level of my VERY vivid imagination.

Reviewers raved about hot sex scenes, right? Well uhmm no! Even if I could get past the ^above point, there is nothing hot about telling a virgin to woman up and there damn sure isn't anything hot about a guy saying "you're very clean." Not no, but hell to the N-O!

Unbelievability and stupidity seems to be running themes because shortly after this crazy chick has some flashback of her mystery lover that leaves her following him around, she's asking him to role play "taking her by force" {let's call shit what it is... Rape} and telling him "I trust you." Yeah, I can't make this shit up people, and I'm still in complete shock that the author's fingers could type this shit out! Of course, the author gives a big shocker {excuse me while I roll my eyes straight outta my head} reason for the whole 'rape me' scene, but that don't change the fact that the killer dude could've killed her stupid ass too as he now has her in such a vulnerable position. Nah, not buying this shit either.

I know sooo many 'detectives' that drive Mercedes hardtop convertibles. Low profile, huh?

"Men are so weak when it a blow-job is being offered" - wait, how the hell would this chick who, until a few days ago, had never been kissed, danced, or had sex know about bjs and men's thoughts? Just saying~

Love triangle lmao. Girl goes from freaky hermit that is sooo ugly she has to wear industrial makeup and live in the f'ing dark to social butterfly with hot guys lined up to hump her & forfeit riches. I'm not sure who needs the condoms more, her or the readers!

I often allow myself to get shitfaced drunk with a guy that may or may not be trying to kill me, but that I'm obviously suspicious enough of to go kill some more sketchy dudes & paint a target on my back because I want to investigate the guy. Yeah!

Just don't waste your money. Hell don't even bother if this one is free on Amazon unlimited cause this book is like topping a delicious bowl of mint chocolate chip I've cream with mustard and mayo ... Ya just don't do that shit!

No. Cassia Leo did NOT do another masterpiece with this one. I´m not wanting to come across as rude or anything....I just can´t sum up the love I felt for the first Volume. There wasn´t anything cool about this one. This was just a story that was told. It was nothing I expected it to be. I was left wanting so much more after the first book.
Vol. 2 starts off where Vol. 1 ended. Alex ran away to an Island and started hiding. She gave herself a new identity and was ready to start a new life.

I don´t know. What started out great turned into non-interesting. Alex´s new life with all the new people...it felt like, after Alex and Daimon had their fatal stand-off, there was so much missing. What really threw me off was how Alex transformed from being dark, dangerous & mysterious to being open with her issues and having fun on the Island. And just like that....I started disliking Alex / Alyssa. What happened to the woman who hid her face?

Anyway: Alyssa starts dating her neighbor and gets involved with life. That´s until she gets this errie feeling that somethings not right. And she´s right!
( totally predictable story since Alex wasn´t so sure she really killed Daimon)
Things start to happen and Alyssa gets sloppy.

All of the sudden things pick up and get interesting again. It took a while...but the fun was back and my hope returned for this book to knock me off my socks. But who was I kidding ( I should really stop hoping so much) there was nothing that I didn´t see coming.

Not even the end tickled me. I´m not saying this book was God-awful...it was just a predictable. And somewhat far fetched. Being a hitman is a scary thing. And writing a story about it can be way cool. But to involve Monaco and the Grimaldi´s is way to far fetched. I live in Europe and I see alot of the actual Grimaldis on the news, etc. so I have a hard time picturing Alex being the princess of Monaco. Or being the daughter of the princess of Monaco. Either way....I couldn´t visualize that.

Let´s not forget about the 200 pages. I flew through that story in a night.+

Would I recommend this book?
Hmm....maybe.

Would I re-read this book?
Probably not.
