The Montgomery Chronicles #1

The Fertile Vampire

Rate this book
Okay, so she'd dated a vampire.

Maybe she got carried away one night.

Becoming a vampire seemed a high price to pay for being foolish.

Nor was this whole transformation thing starting off the way it was supposed to for Marcie Montgomery. She was hungry all the time - not for blood, but tacos and french fries and cheeseburgers, oh my. Then there was Niccolo Maddock, the Master Vampire who was acting as her mentor. Just what did he want?

Going from being an insurance adjuster to a vampire could confuse the most level headed person and Marcie had always considered herself a pragmatist. Even when she was faced with relatives who weren’t who they'd always been, witches who were out to annihilate her, and the stunning knowledge of her own powers. Add in werewolves, shape shifters, and other Brethren and life in South Texas suddenly became very complicated.

When Marcie discovered she alone could transform the vampire race, she was faced with a choice: to embrace who she was or change her destiny.

Why should anything be easy?

I’m a writer who’s been privileged to have attained the New York Times and USA Today Bestseller Lists.

Although I've primarily written historical romance, I've also written contemporary romantic suspense, a murder mystery, and I'm having a wonderful time writing about a vampire who is being challenged by her new state of being. (The Montgomery Chronicles: The Fertile Vampire and The Reluctant Goddess coming March 12, 2015.)

I believe in the power of the individual, the magnificence of the human spirit, and always looking for the positive in any situation. I write about people who have been challenged by life itself but who win in the end.

My Review:

I'll start off by saying that this book isn't what I anticipated it to be about, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I was a tad disappointed. Originally, I thought this book would be about a vampire chicka who was pregnant an how she survived the vampy world. Something along those lines because I've never read a book like that before and the title kinda makes me think along those lines. Also, the whole food cravings things.. This is not the case. The heroine is not pregnant, and this is not a love story.

Marcie seems a bit neurotic at times throughout this story. She's an extreme worrier and sometimes causes her own problems. She relates too many emotions from her past to her present, which leads her to make crappy decisions. For instance, she's still fixated on her childhood and how that's affected her an caused a lot of her bad decisions. I can understand having a horrible ho for a mom an how that affects you, but at least she had a loving grandma. So, I think a lot of the issues with her family constantly being drudged up become repetitive an annoying. I started just skimming the pages after the eighth time of this being mentioned since it wasn't really pertinent to the story.

I kinda felt like I was being dragged along with bits and pieces of real story while filler made up a bulk of this book. I honestly think this book probably could have been wrapped up in about 150-200ish pages if it was cleaned up and the family drama got dropped.

*This is 18+. There is a rape scene so be warned*

This book was 99c on Amazon and definitely worth it. The concept and creativity of the work gave it less of a generic feeling and had some fairly original ideas in it as far as vampire novels go. It is not a YA read not so much in terms of content, but rather the maturity of the characters and atmosphere.

It's a well written work and for the most part puts in a feeling of credibility, my main issue with the work demoting it to 3 stars is I found the pace to slow rather than just getting on with it.

A good book and I have already plunged in for the next novel even though I was totally aghast at a price of $5.49. I would never have read the first novel if I had been aware of this, so there you go I've learned a valuable (ha ha) lesson.

I got the notice of this fun free read through book blub and was so very happy. It reminded me a bit of Molly Harper's vampire series except with a bit more serious edge. The vampire world is unique, but I didn't qualify it as romance because we don't have a romance yet, but the potential is there with Dan....I think. I hope Nicolo gets what is coming to him. There was a lot of world building as this is the first book in a new series. I am looking forward to the next one.

So this wasn't exactly a romance. This was I dunno what it was tbh. She's a vampire but not. The author did the old bread crumb trick which kind of annoyed me because the H would push back things that I felt I was more interested in vs the thing at hand. I wanted her to analyze the info she got now, not later.

So Marcie ends up becoming a vampire by accident, and becomes under the protection of her "mentor" Niccolo, who wants her for something. Yet she kinda sorta goes with him and trusts him but not really. I dunno this was very confusing. There is a scene that some might feel is rape, some might not Marcie did a lot of rehashing and retelling I'm not sure how many times it was said, but I'm pretty sure Marcie is an insurance adjuster and was a "coward" but then suddenly she's a strong woman, who takes no shit. There was a lot of back and forth with this story, and when it ended, it ended in such a weird place to me that I didn't appreciate the ending. I felt kinda jipped. I dunno this book was good, I read it in a day, but it wasn't that great either. It could have been better. There were also many typos throughout the book. Still I am wondering what's going to happen and I think I'm going to read the next one eventually.

Ugh god I got suckered when I purchased this book, I'm serious. It's not a terribly bad written book or story line but its mostly a gimmick I think. The writing I have to say is mediocre. The story line might have been good but the main character spent most of her time sitting alone in her house, eating and crying about how anti-social she is and why no one can answer her questions. The title was funny, the cover is awesome, but the only character I liked out of the 10 people that were mentioned was Dan and he was hardly in it. Plus I hate authors who just drag you along and make the ending somewhat interesting so you can get the next book and make you hope that somehow in the next book you will see some improved writing and storytelling. I'm not falling for that I've done it before and I think that writers like this are a waste!

I have never read this authors books, but based on this story I'm not going to read anything else by her either.

I thought, from the reviews, that this would be a fun little read... but it needs editing. Commas. It's starving for commas.

This is definitely a gripping story. You can’t help but feel sorry for Marcie and want her to victorious in whatever is happening. Really intrigued by Dan.

One of the best vampire/urban fantasies I've read in a long time. Unfortunately, the book description makes it sound funnier than it is. The heroine deals with some heavy duty problems in her transformation into a vampire, beginning with her complete rejection by family and friends after she's turned against her will. There's not much humor or lightheartedness in her new life. But her struggles are portrayed well and the plot kept me turning the pages. Looking forward to the next in the series.

This was in desperate need of trigger warnings i didnt see anywhere hell maybe i missed it somewhere but usually theyre in the blurb and the front of the book and i saw neither which frankly the explicit drugged rape all the shit surrounding that including the stalking the past miscarriages the manipulations whether well meaning or not that ties to the toxic relationships idk this was heavy on bs. Now it wasnt as graphic or traumatising as mercy thompson series i believe its called which frankly still give me mild panic attacks but it was a different sort of bs that shouldve been warned so people with worse trauma can safely decide if they want to skip the scenes or skip the book series entirely.
Despite this i had enough i suppose interest rather than enjoyment in this book to continue and the writing style meshed well with me overall. It was frustrating overall though and ive since finished the series and without any spoilers remains so with loose threads shes kept in the dark and lied to the entire time and thats like the nicest version of abuse thats inflicted. The entire series gave the sense of confusion cabin fever helplessness and not enough romance or good things to back it worthwhile and the epilogue of book 3 which from memory is the only epilogue was frankly super lacking on love happy ending things that make you have that closure and ahhh i guess it was all worthwhile (excluding the rape and spoiler for a future book below

The revenge she implements against the rapist which is never solved concluded nothing nor is the missing female family member the justice on a certain dog owner frankly idk wtf the point of her is what info we did get was disjointed tidbits that didnt say shit and frankly didnt amount to anything since there was no climax no confrontation with the vamp council or any accords or whatever being signed or definitive acknowledgement of her and i guess her claim to godhood or wtf thats about like sorry but that doesnt gel with what i saw of her the entire time like not to mention theres all these arseholes attackers etc and literally none of them are punished theres no vindication for her suffering. No justice for monsters or criminals like at all no prisons no police no putting down the animals no death destruction or god smiting there was like zero communication between anyone in the entire series i shit you not. Even the servants were convenient like faceless shadows majority of the time like genuinely wtf. Like was anyone punished for anything they did? At all? Ffs.
Its a shame cause geunuinely the ideas the characters the scenery were all great claustrophic at times messy or not enough depth but the promise was there the potential was within reach and frankly this shouldve EASILY been 5 books if not more. Like this was so absolved from rare chick creature and her probable but never confirmed soul mate book genre where she goes through the initial bs the trials the tests the emotions earns respect and trust befriends people doles out justice when needed wise ruler do gooder action person with lots of couple time or general down time that balances the shitty aspects of their life grows into their powers and is mentored trained whatever and then cones into her own and blows shit outta the water and paves the way for a revolution slash betterment of society from the inside out catalyst for peace and prosperity etc like this series is not that at all. The entire times shes just oulled too and fro by various figures mostly male sexual relationships and frankly she didnt bither finding out shit or taking on any roles to help or even explore the world she was in she had a million questions and so did i but they never got answered like ffs this really felt more like the rough draft fever dream of a great epic that you knoe will be amazing but needs to be turned from ideas rough scenes randomness into something enjoyable worthwhile and frankly coherent because it was aimless af besides dont die and hide in my room that was basically the only consistency. Ugh anyway i will be looking into the authors other works and hoping i just am not satisfied with this series as like i said serious potential but was squandered in this instance.

The writing itself wasn't the best. Some paragraphs seemed unnecessary or didn't connect to the previous one which took me out of the story sometimes.
Most of the characters were flat and I would have liked some depth. I think depth is the main thing missing in the story.
Some things also were off. The main character lies down next to her car to pick something up and gets shot at. Or at least the car gets shot at repeatedly. Instead of staying down she runs for a bush! Then she walks towards the building and not until someone tells her that someone must rally hate her does she look back, see her car was targeted and freak out. First of all, why get up and run when being shot at, second of all, how do you not get shot then? And thirdly, who would not notice that it's your car that is shot at, and then even if you did, would walk away casually? Wouldn't you look around to see what happened and if anyone got hurt? It was very weird.

The plot was okay, though I wondered what the point of it all was. But then it got worse when up the main character got pretty much roofied and raped. That was not how I thought it would go and I was hoping for a different direction. This is a matter of opinion, of course. But it felt like I had invested in a certain character only for him to do something so heinous. It was disappointing but that's how the story went. I did like that it meant that another character got a bigger role but I would have personally liked to have things go differently.
The combination of all of that means I've lost my interest and won't be reading the other books.

This was much better than I thought it would be, given the horrendous title. There isn’t any romance in this one, but I’m guessing there will be some with Mr White Knight in the next book. I’d go so far as to say I’d read the second one, but it isn’t on KU and I’m not interested enough to pay for it.

The plot was entertaining and the FMC was only a complete moron once, which is really pretty good in comparison to most romances. There is rape, though it isn’t violent. That’s not a trigger for me but I figured I’d include it.

Not the average Vampire novel

A newly turn d vampire who doesn’t drink blood, eats regular food, and who can enjoy the sunshine and her reflection in mirrors, Marcie Montgomery is something other.

This book should come with an NC17 rating due to the chemically induced rape scene.

Definitely unlike this author’s other books and begs the question why she would write something like this. The humour is witty, but I found the book lacking, with characters that have little to no personality. It ends abruptly with no closure to the MFC issues.

I really really wanted to like this. Love the premise and was expecting a hilarious read. I was sadly disappointed and found by a quarter in I could cope no more with the soliloquy. Or should I say monologue. I did not expect to be subjected to constant wittering on I expected things to happen. Too much talking about nonsense and not enough happening! Sorry

It took me forever to finish this book for the simple reason that halfway through it, I got bored, lost interest and it became a drag. I just want to be over and done with it.

I thought this book was about a vampire who got pregnant. Well, the heroine is not pregnant despite the food cravings. I kinda felt like I was dragged along.

A great Read

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Great heroine, human enough to be engaging but mysterious enough to make a great paranormal heroine. In the vein of Carrie Vaughn's Kitty Norville series, the novel has an upbeat feeling, great humour, yet deals with serious issues. The heroine is well rounded. Other characters have yet to develop to the same level in terms of personality, yet we sense levels within levels. The book is well written and., for the most part, well edited, but there were some egregious spelling errors. Especially notable when the heroine has declared a college major in literature. In these days of spell checks and autocorrect, such errors are all too easy. Two that feature large in my mind are 'I'll' instead of 'ill' and 'peer' instead of 'pier'. Spell checks will not pick up such mistakes when the spelling is correct but the usage incorrect. If it were possible, I'd have given four and three quarter stars. Now I can't wait for book two.

The Fertile Vampire begins when Marci wakes up as a vampire. Her semi-boyfriend turned her into one and now she's in a whole world of trouble. There's a lot of secrets she doesn't understand, and master vampire who may or may not be on her side. She must now try to figure out whose trying to kill her again, and what the heck she is, because she is no normal vampire.

This book was extremely interesting. The only thing that made not super good was the heroine at times. I really sort of hated how she acted like a child at times. Towards the end though she got a lot better. And this book did end in a major cliffhanger! But I can not wait to read more in this series. It has me hooked because the story is just so unique. I just hope the heroine gets better in the next book. Also, not only does this one have lots of interest it was pretty funny too!

Review for the entire series: This book and the entire series could have been so much better. I wouldn't say it is a bad book(s). I think my main issue was that half the book, if not more, was filled with inconsequential and irrelevant mind chatter. She keeps thinking about memories of her ex-boyfriend whom she had practically no feelings for and whom never appears in the story. I ended up skimming through most of the book because the drivel was boring and irrelevant and honestly just felt like it was there to fill pages to reach some unknown quota. I think the mind chatter *might* have been an attempt to be funny but it really didn't work for me. The actual story itself (without the stupid mind chatter) was pretty good. It could have been sooooo much better though if the filler material had been replaced with something that actually mattered and helped move the plot along.

Karen Ranney does a fabulous job with "The Fertile Vampire." Marice lives in a world where DNA testing has proven the existence of vampires. And as a result they were forced to come out of the casket. As a minority group, they are seen as desirable employees for certain occupations, but at the same time they are hated by the average person due to the shift in the job market. So, when Marice's ex-vampire - boyfriend shows up, she has a hard time denying him entrance into her life and bed. Little did she realize that sex with a vampire wasn't what it was cracked up to be when she wakes up in a hospital. I don't want to give anything else away so I'll stop there. Overall, it was an enjoyable read. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I am not the biggest fan of vampire books. I've certainly read my share, but I burned out on them quicker than the rest of the world apparently. That being said the title Fertile Vampire caught my eye and after reading the sample I had to read more.
The story was fairly fast paced and I loved the fact that Marcie sought revenge for what was done to her. There were a few slower places while she moped but they were understandable considering all that was going on.
I felt sorry for Marcie and the fact that she didn't have anyone really in her corner. She was at times annoying, but for the most part I liked her. I was definitely jealous of her ability to eat constantly and not gain weight.
I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

This has several errors in it which distracts from the story, including the main characters name. This kind of thing drives me nuts when reading.

Be warned that there is a rape scene in this book.

I almost DNF'd this very early (not because of the rape scene, but because it was so strange), but soldiered on, and was glad I did. It's just a really weird book and that might be because it's written by an author not known for this genre, but I like her 'voice'... she can write conversation, etc. very well.

If there's a sequel, I will probably get it, because this one leaves way too much unsolved. Lots of subterfuge from secondary characters...
