Verdantia #4

Hers to Claim

Rate this book
Book Four in the Verdantian Series - Stand alone. Not a cliff-hanger. HEA 360 pages. M/F, Mild D/s themes, light spanking, and an over-sexed but sensitive prince with a hero complex.

Scornfully rejected by her desert lover and uncertain of her place in the world, Adonia travels an arduous road fraught with peril to the fabled mountain-city of Nyth Uchel. She wishes to heal their sick and dying, but in the arms of Hel—their highborn prince—Adonia finds where she wants to belong.

Noble born, a descendant of the greatest kings their planet has known, Hel willingly bears the burden of his dying city and its people on his massive shoulders—alone. But forced to watch helplessly as a dark evil attacks the very soil under his feet, he crushes his pride to summon help. He is staggered to discover the answer to saving his city and perhaps all Verdantia might lie behind a heavy fall of chocolate hair and shy brown eyes.

As their entire planet faces encroaching black death, Hel and Adonia, two seemingly disparate individuals, forge a partnership of love and sacrifice that alters their future forever. All of Verdantia will be tested.

A Note About My Reviews:
Book reviews are wildly subjective. Many things influence whether or not a reader enjoys a book that are out of the author's control and unrelated to the quality of their writing. My book reviews deal with books I can recommend as having entertained me. For this reason you will not see reviews below a 3-star rating. My reviews are recommendations not critiques. I read books I don't like--books I can't finish. I just don't review them. I also do not review books by authors I edit. I do not review books to have mine reviewed, I'm easy to please. I don't require fine literature. Just tell me a good yarn.

Absolutely splendid.
A fantastic addition to the Verdantia Series!

(Mild Spoilers if you haven't read the previous books in the series)

The fourth book brought back all of the characters we've come to love from this series - Ram & Steffiana play a huge role, and Hel's bickering with Ram was a particularly delightful aspect of the book:
"Bring it on, dickless wonder [...] Your wife inspires more fear in me. You aren't half the man she is."
In addition, all three members of the Royal Tetriarch are featured heavily. Even Eric and Sophi pop up for a few scenes - so basically, everyone but Tok had a few moments to catch the reader up on life after their book.

Speaking of cameos and awesomeness - Patricia A. Knight included a feature I'd not seen before (but appreciated the wisdom of) a live-linked Easter egg embedded in the dialogue. Doral whispers something in Ari's ear... The reader clicks the link (and is asked to sign up for Patricia A. Knight's newsletter) and the page reveals the secret whispered.

Was it an epic secret? Nah.
Was it amusing? Sure.
Was it a genius marketing ploy? Absolutely.

I did a full breakdown of the intricacies of this high-fantasy Sci-Fi world in My review for Hers to Command. Rather than rehashing all of that, I'll simply encourage you to catch up with that post.

However, I want to remind you of one important fact: The Planet Verdantia is sentient; She has feelings, and interacts with her population. That interaction occurs when certain Verdantians have sex... Crazy, sweaty, kinky, burn-up-the sheets sex...

All this awesome sex helps the planet flourish - it keeps the lights on, makes the crops grow, and it powers the shields which protect the Verdantia from outside forces...

Only Verdantians with a specific set of genetic markers are capable of performing the sexual rites, and they were systematically slaughtered during the war with the Haarb. Only a handful of Magistras survived the decimation of Verdantia... It was assumed that all of the female survivors (who are of age) had already been paired up...

Turns out, we were wrong.

ADONIA
What will I be at the end of this journey? Someone different I suspect.
We met Adonia in Hers to Choose. She is a warrior and a healer who traveled with Sophi's deadly First Arrows. She was raised with a loathing of the high-bred Verdantians who performed rites. Toward the end of her time in the desert with Eric and Sophi, she discovered she had much to learn about Verdantian Magicks.

She began to travel with Sophi and Eric as they made their way across the planet. She suffered nearly irreparable heartache when her betrothed, Klaran, cast her off - telling her that she wasn't feminine enough and that he used her in order join the service of Ducca DeStoria.

She obviously needed to get away from Klaran, so she fled to Sylvan Mintoth and began advanced study in the healing Rites. She hoped to become a more proficient healer despite the fact that her common Oshtesh genetics would never allow her to actually attempt the sexual rites. She was keeping to herself and watching over Queen Fleur (who is pregnant with her fourth child) when a scraggly, smelly, fur-covered nobleman storms into the throne-room.

HEL
"You are a light for my dark soul - a gift from our Great Mother..."
Though the Haarb have been eradicated, Verdantia is still under attack. A mysterious force threatens the planet on the metaphysical plane - a darkness has descended across the remote regions of the planet. We're talking poisoned soil, plagues, mutants, and zombies... The kingdom of Nyth Uchel has taken the blunt force of this attack, and Prince DeHelios has come to Sylvan Mintoth to beg for help.

He has lost his wife,
his young children,
his friends,
and has little hope left.

He needs the Tetriarch to provide him with a healer and brite-weed to combat the illness which has claimed the lives of so many. He needs a magistra to return to Nyth Uchel with him and perform the Great Rite if there is any hope of restoring light to the darkness which has enveloped his kingdom...

The Tetriarch agree to part with copious amounts of healing herbs and with their beloved medica Adonia, but there are no magistras left on Verdantia...

Hel leaves Sylvan Mintoth with a heavy heart - with no magistra his hopes of saving his city are nearly nonexistent. He must put all his faith in a healer who has little faith in herself... The road to Nyth Uchel is long and treacherous, the Tetriarch insist that Ram and Steffiana accompany Hel and Adonia on their journey...

Along the way they will face mutants, evil soul-sucking ghouls, and a steadily encroaching winter. They attempt to decipher the riddles of rambling mystics and soon learn that Adonia is not precisely what she seems...

Verdantia works in mysterious ways, and the group has a great deal to prepare for if they hope to succeed in the coming war against an intangible enemy...

There was a lot going on in this installment:
We learn more about the history of Verdantia, and of the first Tetriarc.
a few riddles,
lots of action,
symbiotic cephalopods,
a particularly kinky Prince,
some hilarious alpha-male bickering,
and an epic battle for Verdantia herself!

Another exciting feature:
Patricia A. Knight has included a glossary of terms with pronunciation to assist the reader with acclimating to this richly detailed Sci-Fi world.

The only drawback - I've grown quite fond of the bad-ass female main characters in this series, but Adonia had a nasty habit of putting herself down and generally believing that she was unworthy despite all evidence to the contrary... That being said, her attainment of self-worth was a good source for character progression...

Overall, it was another fabulous installment of the Verdantia Series, and I'll be the first in line for book five when Patricia A. Knight blesses us with one!

Erotic SFR with rich worldbuilding and elements of fantasy(magic) and zombies/undead.

I read only bk 1 of this series and was able to follow but don't think this can be read as a stand alone, the worldbuilding is so unique- with a sentient world that is energised through sexual rituals, plus all the characters from earlier books make a visit.

The thing with this author is whether she gets the erotic stuff right or not(and she always does making it both exotic and erotic) she gets the love right everytime.

The H is a big badass alpha protector king whose kingdom is under siege by dark magic and is saved by the h who in spite of having low self esteem I found very likeable. Because she was never tstl, never let her insecurities hold her back and was not neurotic or a coward. She was in fact brave and very loving. The H was also so all in protective, possessive and loving of the h that you just melt.

Recommended for readers who like erotic romances with unique worldbuilding, alpha H's deeply in love with their h, and very human h's who transcend their limitations by being sensible and true to themselves.

4.25 stars!

A vile blackness is consuming Verdantia and the sentient planet needs her noble sons and daughters to come together to help restore her light.

We're back on Verdantia for Hers to Claim, the fourth book in the Verdantia series. Prince DeHelios, Hel, makes the perilous journey to Sylvan Mintoth to plead for a Magistra, Healer and brite-weed to help his people sick from the blight that is effecting the planet. Having closeted himself in his city of Nyth Uchel, devastated by his personal losses, he is unaware that the devastation of the war has robbed Verdantia of almost all of it's Magistras. Still desperate to help his citizens, he demands a Healer and brite-weed. Adonia, fresh from her training as a healer in the High Enclave, sees an opportunity to be useful and requests to help him.

"Hell-spawn." "Repellent, pestilent asshole." "Noxious carcass of flatulent gas." [...] "That's your fault. Serve something other than those gods-be-damned potatoes."

It was so much fun to see all of my favorite characters from this series back together. (Especially, Ramsey. God, I love Ramsey!) The banter between Ramsey and Hel is hilarious. It brings a bit of lightness to an otherwise dark situation.

"There can be no bravery without fear. The soul's triumphant fight over what's most feared is the definition of courage."

Themes of courage in the face of adversity and overcoming fear are prevalent in this book. Hel's fear of losing what and who he loves, Adonia's self-doubt and fear of an unrequited love is all set in a time when Verdantia's very existence is at stake. It's captivating.

"He is never more wholly mine than when I am under his total control, in complete service to him."

This is a Patricia A. Knight book, so you know the sex is hot! There are very light BDSM themes in this one, almost vanilla, but she definitely has a few surprises for you. The caves! Oh man, the caves! *zips lips* You have to read it to find out what I'm talking about.

Though Hers To Cherish is my favorite of the series, I loved Hers to Claim! I highly recommend if you are looking for Sci-Fi Romance/Erotica.

**This was an ARC copy given by the author for a honest review**

4.5-5 stars

This was a great story. I was very happy to be offered a chance to read an ARC for this book as I've loved the series up to this point. I loved Hel and Adonia and their story was great with lots of action, suspense and romance.

Adonia is a healer and a skilled warrior from the deserts. She grew up in harsh climates and survived and even flourished but it didn't leave much room for softness. Adonia had been involved with a man for 10 years and they were engaged to be married in 2 weeks when he called off the wedding. He cruelly cast aspersions on her womanliness and her ability to make a man love her, leaving Adonia heartbroken and focusing on her healing skills.

Hel is the prince of his city and does everything he can to keep his people safe. It hasn't been easy with the invasion of their planet that killed so many. Now that the invasion has been beaten, Hel's lands have been beset by a different problem...a blight of the soul that kills anything living and is spreading. Hel goes to the capital city to talk to the Queen to request help.

Hel's people are fighting back the blight as much as possible but they're starting to be affected by a wasting sickness known as the fading. They need a healer and more healing herbs but most of all they need a woman trained in the mystical arts used to manipulate the energies of the planet in order to better safeguard his people and fight back the blight. When Hel gets to the Capital he's shocked to find out that the invasion had killed most of the trained women and there's no one they can send with him. Adonia is in the Capital helping the Queen and she offers to go along with Hel to help heal the sick. She's attracted to Hel but doesn't think he'd be interested in her but is willing to do what she can to help. Hel is intrigued by Adonia from his first glance but takes his time in approaching her. As is happens, Ram and Steffania (from book #3 Hers To Cherish) are in the Capital as well and end up accompanying them back to Hel's home.

It's a long and arduous journey, especially when they realize the blight has spread and they have to take a different route, one that's still extremely dangerous. As they're traveling, they need to set up powered crystals for protection against some of the creatures out at night. In order to power the crystals, Hel needs a partner for the sexual rights and Adonia offers to be that partner. This starts things off a little weird for them because they have to start their sexual relationship as part of ritual before they've even gotten a chance to know each other better. Adonia doesn't believe that Hel could want her "manish frame" (as her ex put it) outside of needing her for the rituals and it takes some effort on Hel's part to make her see her worth and that he wants her for her. Once they get to Hel's city, things get even tougher as the blight gets worse and they have quite a battle to fight. Hel and Adonia come together in a way that complimented each other and I loved seeing their growing relationship, as well as seeing Hel build up Adonia's self esteem. There are some tough battles and rough times as the battle is waged against the blight in an effort to save the planet. It takes a team effort (with a bright star) to get rid of the blight but things work out in the end and Hel and Adonia start their HEA.

I really enjoyed this story and I loved the characters. The story lines in this series are great and do well at balancing the action/romance but I think the best part of this series is the characters because I get sucked in by them and just can't help but stress until I know things are going to work out for them. I love this series and am looking forward to the next book. I'd recommend this story. 2 Thumbs up. :D

12-2-15 - This was a reread before reading an ARC of book #5 in the series. This is still a great story and I really like the MCs.

I can't say strongly enough how incredible this book and this series is. If you are a fan of sci-fi, paranormal hotness then this is the right place for you! I have thoroughly enjoyed this entire series. The world of Verdantia is different but similar enough that it doesn't take too much imagination to put yourself there. In this installment of the series we learn of another area of Verdantia called Nyth Uchel. To me it felt like we were getting a feel for the beginning of the world of Verdantia, like Her early days. We get to see a character from another book in the series, Adonia, the healer. She was great in the previous book but now she shines! We also get to meet DeHelios, I totally got a "Grizzly Adams" feel from him. What a great character! There were so many sides to Hel and we got to see them all. It amazed me that Patricia Knight was able to explore all of the different sides of him without losing the essence of the story and without getting lost or sidetracked from the story. Many times when you read a book with a character as complex as Hel you get taken on so many twists and turns that you forget where you began in this character exploration but not here. Even though Hel was such a dominant character (and not just in bed) we didn't lose our love for Nia. I can't say how much I enjoyed the purity and love that Nia had for all things.
I do have one recommendation, even though it's not necessary to enjoy the book, I do recommend that you read the series in order. You will gain a better understanding of the relationships between the characters, especially Ramsey (so glad we got more Ram!) and Steffania. I think understanding their relationship will enhance the enjoyment of reading of Hel and Nia's burgeoning love. Consider this just a suggestion though as you will still enjoy this book without having gone through those.

★★★★☆
My preferred reading isn't m/f although I love this series (in spite of that :)) Patricia gave this to me some time ago as an ARC and it's been out for a for a couple of months so I apologize profusely for not getting to this sooner!

Adonia, who has been a character in Ram and Steffania's book, was one of Steffania's Blue Arrows although she is currently learning healing techniques in Queen Fleur's court. That all changes when Prince DeHelios, a descendant of the First Tetriarch shows up at court requesting help at his faraway kingdom that has been beset by an evil corruption.

Adonia, who feels she has no home anywhere, volunteers to accompany Hel on the long trip back to Nyth Uchel along with Ram and Steffania and along the way, she finds the soulmate who appreciates and cherishes her. Hel, for his part, finds the warm and caring partner he never thought he'd find.

Ram and Hel's barbed-tongue retorts were amusing and added light-heartedness to the bleak landscape of the road trip.

As always, Patricia's imagination brings the characters and landscapes to life and make them visual for me.

Teaser: #5 in the series is a m/m/f - Hers To Captivate! I'd link but it's not added to GR yet.

Awesome!

I was given this ARC copy by the author for an honest review.

This is an amazing series. In the world of Verdantia, Hel is a prince of his dying city and has come to the conclusion his only option is to ask the queen for help. Adonia is a healer and her previous relationship has destroyed her self-confidence. A tiny woman and a warrior prince tackle the evil in Hel’s kingdom. They are a wonderful couple and the romance builds slowly throughout the book.

I also enjoyed the banter between Hel and Ramsey as they try to solve the problems with Hel’s dying city. They seem to be enemies, but are best of friends.

It was wonderful reading about the characters from the previous books in the series, and particularly Ramsey and Steffania from Hers to Cherish.

This is another great addition to the series and I highly recommend it. The stories are action packed, with plenty of villains, and great romances. These books are definitely page turners and hard to put down.

Patricia A. Knight has stolen my heart with the fourth book in the Verdantia series. I have fallen in love with each one of these books, but this one just completely stole my heart. I have seen all of the relationships in this series progress in the name of the Mother, but there was something special about this one. Never has a planet been so damn sexy and in control!

Hel is a prince, a descendent of nobility, whose mission is to protect the Nyth Unchel mountains from the evils that threaten the people. But now, he knows he must reach out to those who can help him most as the people in his community are dying faster than they can get supplies to help save them. When he reaches out to Fleur, Ari and Doral (Hers To Command) for assistance in saving his city with a healer and so supplies, he really doesn’t expect to be accompanied back to his home by Adonia. She has just captured Hel with her beauty. But there is more to this amazing woman. Along for the journey are Steffania and Ram (Hers To Cherish) and promise for an adventure like no other.

Along this journey, Hel is made more and more aware of the presence of Adonia. She is smart, beautiful, strong and brave. She may not see it or believe it, but Hel knows it and he will prove it to her. Since their first meeting, he saw something in her that she doesn’t quite see. He sees so much more.

The adventure back to Nyth Unchel is dark and dangerous, but little mysteries are solved along the way, but can the biggest mystery be solved now that Adonia has made it to this city? This is an amazing journey, not only on the trail back to Hel’s home, but a journey of discovery for Adonia. She not only has to find her self worth, but she will discover so much about her own history. All while falling head over heals for a guy that may not love her back. And she does it all from the kindness within her soul.

This planet has so many dark sides and threats, but to discover that you are the one that could possibly hold all the answers? Whew! That’s a lot for anyone to take on, and Adonia was doing just that. She wanted to make him proud. She knew he may never look at her the same way she was looking at him, but she knew she had a commitment to fulfill to the people of Nyth Unchel and to the Queen back home.

I think I have said it with each of Patricia A. Knight’s books, but this is not a genre that I typically read, but when a series captures me from the first page in the first book, I know it is a series that I am going to want to stick with through the end. She has yet to disappoint.

Hers To Claim is a powerful story of survival, strength, courage. The powerful love between Hel and Nia was amazing, they had demons and they had history but together, they had what it took to help save the planet. I loved seeing the return of all of the characters from previous books and I couldn’t get enough of the interactions between Ram and Hel.

Patricia A. Knight has taken a mythical place, mixed in some larger than life characters and thrown in a lot of hot sex all to save the planet and you just can’t go wrong with that kind of power. Hers To Claim is a fabulous continuation in an already amazing series and I will definitely be revisiting it again!

Hers To Claim is another wonderful and exciting visit to Verdantia, this one quite perilous. The world building continues to be rich, character development deep, and writing excellent.

This story drew me in immediately and held my interest throughout. I really enjoyed the bits of humor supplied by the banter between Hel and Ramsey (the hero from the last novel), which helped break up some of the more somber parts of the book.

What kept this story from being rated 5 stars was the end which felt a bit off to me. That's not to say I didn't love how the story ended, because I did - Hel and Adonia deserved every bit of happiness the got. Right at the end Adonia is experiencing difficulty with the way people are treating her. She is very uncomfortable with it and I didn't see any real resolution to that issue. Yes, she has a severe lack of self confidence which is part of the problem and to a great extent she overcomes this by the end of the story, but this isn't about self confidence or a lack thereof. It's about her place in her world and her ability to enjoy and find comfort in it. Anyway, the issue felt unresolved to me.

While the book is definitely erotic, I wouldn't have minded a bit more of that as well. It seemed to me that somewhere in the second half of the book, the erotic parts were more often behind closed doors and referred to after the deed was done. There was a lot of story to tell though, so I suppose something had to give in order to tell it.

A wonderful story and anyone who enjoys erotic sci/fi fantasy with some light BDSM will enjoy it. If you haven't read the first three books in the series, it isn't absolutely essential that you do, but I think they are more enjoyable when read in order.

I'm a big fan of this series. I was given my first ARC for an honest review. Thanks, Ms. Knight!

I love Verdantia. I am fascinated by the connection between the planet and her inhabitants. The use of sexual energy is interesting and I'd often wondered if everyone on the planet feels so comfortable with it. I may have missed it in the earlier books but I clearly got an answer in Hers To Claim.

I admit I didn't find this book as delicious as the last one. Hers To Cherish is awesome and very sexy. It's hard not to love Ramsey and Steffania. Their D/s relationship of mutual respect is something to behold. And the ropes...

Hel and Adonia are the stars of Hers To Claim. They are a pretty sweet pairing full of more old-school romance than anything else. She is an insecure, kind hearted healer with warrior training, he is a warrior prince who yearns for love and family. There is more to it, but that is yours to discover. They are great together on all levels, emotional and physical, and the tentacled miku amara really add some hot and sexy to their intimacies. Where can I get some of these???

I enjoyed having Ramsey and Steffania around to lighten the mood. There are some pretty dire things going on with Verdantia so a little humour and fun is necessary. Ramsey and Hels' antics are hilarious.

I think my only issue is the story got a little big and the final battle is a little underwhelming and somewhat confusing after all the build up. I want to know what was happening on both plains of existence in more detail. Both battles were important and I feel I got half of one story and none of the other. I want to know more! Where did the big bad go? What was it?

Oh, and thank you for less use of oddball italics. I understand why they're used but really aren't necessary after the first use of a new word IMHO.

Will there be another in this series? I hope so!

* Received an ARC copy from the author for an honest review *

It was wonderful to travel back to Verdantia! The author took the conflict in this story in a very different, yet still interesting direction from the previous three.
We've already met our heroine in the stories of other characters. Adonia is not traditionally beautiful and her self confidence has been obliterated by a horrific ex. All she wants to do is help others with her healing and stay out of the spotlight. Yeah, right. Not going to happen, sweetheart. Best buckle up!
Our hero is all new to this series, although he does seems to be acquainted with Ramsey after a fashion. At first he came off a lot gruff and more than a little arrogant, but we soon see the caring person beneath the fur and excess hair. :-)
The pace felt slower in this book, the fighting more internal. The relationship between Adonia and Hel had to build slowly because it takes time to convince someone who thinks them self unworthy of love that what you've got is real.
LOVED the byplay between Hel and Ramsey. PAK has a gift for hysterical dialog and I lost count of the times I LOLed. When Tristan showed up, I about died.
The miku amar were... interesting. I'm going to have to ponder that one for a while. Lot's of cinnagin flying again. Fun stuff, that. While I really liked the story of Adonia and Hel, I do miss the Tetriarch of the first book. Hopefully, PAK will feel like writing another trio for us to enjoy. Either way, can't wait to read more!

How is it that my review never showed up here? I read this before it came out and after reading the 5th book, I come back to see my review missing for the 4th! Doh.

Of the books in this series, this one is the one that didn't really mesh well for me. It is still enjoyable, don't get me wrong. I just didn't connect with Adonia. It isn't that she is pathetic or weak-willed. She isn't. She just isn't as appealing for me as the others females in the first few books. (Remember the fiery red headed vixen - Steffania?)

Adonia's male is an asshole Hel. Excuse me, PRINCE Hel who is an aristocrat that isn't exactly understanding the realities of Verdanita. Yes, yes, he's lost his family and friends. Yes, his territory is devastated and most likely going to be lost because he still thinks of different classes. I should give him a break but I'm not. When things are as dire as his situation, take any help and find a way to make it work. People stuck with ideology just bug me. Maybe it's because I'm a peasant?

The sex in this book is eh for me. I realize the sex is a focal point in order for Adonia to actually heal the lands. The chemistry is off for me because I didn't like these two characters as much. Still, this story is well written. The plot flows. The characters are well developed and more intrigue is revealed. Of the five books I've read, this is the weakest one for me.

Recommended for paranormal romance lovers who enjoy sexual healing.

This was a bit more of an interesting story. So Adonia has a bit of a self esteem issue thanks to her previous lover. She doesn't see herself as womanly and attractive and therefore takes no more lovers. She studies to be a healer and is good at it. This bit of vulnerability makes her easier to relate to. She's a little different from our other heroines in the series because of it, yet similar. She has a fearless side, as she is a trained warrior as well. Hel is interesting because he's a prince and bears a heavy load. He's lost his family and is slowly losing his people. He has to swallow his pride to ask for help. In Adonia he finds the planet's salvation, and his own.
I love this story. There were a few part where I kind of grit my teeth because Hel is so overbearing and commanding. But it's quite adorable to also watch him berate himself when he feels he's made an error. Would've been nice to see her push back a bit. If there is one thing I love to see, it's a woman who will stand her ground and occasionally make her male bow down. That being said, if there's more to the series, I can't wait to read it.

3.5/5; 4 stars; B+

Despite a kind of strange premise for powering and interacting with the sentient planet, Verdantia, this -fi romance series continues to entertain me. This latest book was a good addition. I read the books kind of far apart so only vaguely remember Adonia from book two but it didn't detract from the story. Adonia was an archer and a healer from the desert tribes and she is engaged to help one of the main cities that has been decimated by an unknown evil which causes illness. I mention the "strange premise" because this is where the sexual aspect comes in. The planet's defences are connected to and powered by the sexual arousal of trained practitioners of particular bloodlines. They use this particular energy to power crystals that are part of Verdantia's geology. Despite that concept, which I think is a bit hokey, the author tells a good story. In this book, a dark energy tries to overcome and destroy the sentient being that is Verdantia and all the main characters from the other three books in the series must band together to defeat the menace.

This was so worth the wait! Patricia really knows how to tell a story. I loved Hel and Adonia's story. Also excited to get a glimpse of Ari, Doral and Fleur. Mmmm, Doral is still my favorite! So hope there is more of him in future books. The Hel/Ramsey dynamic was great comic relief. Patricia makes you feel every emotion imaginable. Wait til you see what she has in store for you. It's a story you'll never forget!

This review contains direct quotations and a spoiler.

Hers to Claim is an eagerly awaited continuation of Verdantia Chronicles that brought forefront Adonia Corvus, medica and First Arrow of Falcon Flight squadron, whom we met previously in Hers to Choose and introduced Prince DeHelios, descendent of the first kings and queens, head of the most ancient and revered royal House. This is their story.
I have been a devoted follower of Verdantia Chronicle from the first book and love the magnificent world and characters Ms Knight created ,so it really pains me to say, that while I have thoroughly enjoyed the book, I did not love it as much as the previous instalments.
The things that worked for me:
1. The storyline: I found the direction it took refreshing: a sentient planet attacked from within by a deadly miasma – enter the healer.
2. The fascinating world and character building.
3. The writing – Ms Knight got an elegant use of language and crafts beautifully vivid pictures. This is my favourite example that makes me go AHHHHH, every time:

“As Adonia and Fleur looked on in the nursery, Prince DeHelios, descendant of mighty kings, sovereign-head of the fabled Nyth Uchel, spent a carefree hour as the trusty steed of a four-year old as they battled a terrible fell wolf, capably played by the High Lord of Verdantia”

4. The glimpses of our favourite characters from previous books and the ongoing presence of Steffania and Ram – the banter between Hel and Ram was hysterical, not to mention extremely creative.
5. The heat level (ice, need more ice!!!)
The main thing that did not worked for me was the character of Adonia. I found her constant self doubt and self depreciation tiring – the woman even thought herself unworthy of a pretty dress!! There is a difference between being unassuming and having no self-esteem.
Also, for me the jury is still out on the subject of miku amar. I did find the concept of them interesting, but it is their residential preference which for me was a bit hard to accept. Spoiler The idea of a living creature existing wrapper around someone’s genitalia appeared not so much intriguing or titillating as unhygienic. Sorry Ms Knight, but this reader could not get over the picture of glorified pubic lice. If they were left to reside outside the body cavities, then I might’ve found them more endearing.)
So, to summarise, Hers to Claim was a great read, but with previous books setting the bar so high, this one for me missed the “Fantastic” mark by a character.

This book was a little different than most I’ve read. It had a supernatural element to it and feel, but you were never overwhelmed with it. Now before you read this one, You need to read the first books in the “series.” Its not really needed as each is a stand alone, but at the same time it gives you much needed back history and character history. I wasn’t aware of that until I began the book. You’ll see what I mean if you read this one before the others. So the order would go
◾Hers to Command
◾Hers to Choose
◾Hers to Cherish
◾Hers to Claim

I can’t wait to go back and read the first 3. Now what that said, this book is so amazing in details. The land scape, the smells, the way things feel is all laid out in a way that it truly feels and seems like you are there doing the touching, the seeing and the tasting. And the sex scenes? Yes please. Sure toward the end the scenes weren’t so much in details, but the beginning, YES. Send me there today! I want to go to that world. And the sex rituals? What woman wouldn’t volunteer for those?

Our characters? I loved them. Adonia is so insecure though, that for the most part I hated her. She made my nerves grind in a bad way. All the other women were so strong and sure of themselves that Adonia just seemed out of place. Sure her ex fiancé did a number on her, I understand that, but enough is enough. I wanted to yell at her, and she never seemed to get over that as the book went on. There is a difference in being shy and unsure of yourself and being Adonia. She was just a little to much for me.

Hel was wonderfully written. He is so rigid and rugged that I found myself wanting MORE of him, and I loved the different sides we got to see of him. His strong side, protective side, his soft side, and his vulnerable side. Plus his bedrooms skills make him irresistible. I really enjoyed the relationship him and Ramsey have as well. Their wit and banter made the book a little less intense.

I would have to rate this one a 4/5 due to the heroine! But other than that I loved this book and can’t wait to go back and read the first 3!

Okay, so I'd had "Hers to Claim" by Patricia A. Knight on my watch list for a bit, waiting for a break in my school schedule allowing me to do some reading for pleasure rather than a grade. Life is funny though, because I was given the opportunity to read and review this book just as I was headed into finals. (Guess all have sacrifices to make.) Having read the other books in this series, I was interested in the direction this story would go.

It should be said that even though these books are stand-alone, "Hers to Claim" is deepened and made more accessible with back stories of other characters that are gleaned from reading the series. The writing is engaging as always, which makes it easy to immerse yourself in the story. As the story advances through the eyes of the two main characters, Adonia (Nia) and Prince DeHelios (Hel), we watch a love story unfold in the most desperate of circumstances. The health of the city and even that of the planet hangs in the balance. This story has fun, laughter, and shared danger in addition to passion and even revengeful treachery. Bit by bit, the tension builds and the pace quickens to a dramatic conclusion. Awesome! I can highly recommend and will likely re-read.

Definitely closer to 4-1/2 stars. If this is the end of the series, it was a good conclusion for Verdantia. Then again, there could be more. I'm sure this author could creatively extend the series with more fantastical, sweet, and sexy story lines.

I enjoyed this one because of how unassuming Adonia was. All she wanted to do was help people, but she didn't want any accolades for doing so. Early on, Hel recognized she was special, but he couldn't have imagined exactly how special she was. It was great that they found each other. Adonia thought she was unattractive due to comments made by her former fiance. Hel had suffered through a "duty" marriage, and he thought he couldn't be merely a man to anyone because of his position. But they each proved the other wrong. I was glad that Adonia was able to realize her potential and that Verdantia was able to work through her to help save the planet.

Like I said, if this is the end, it was a great story. If the stories from Verdantia continue, I have no doubt more great adventures await the inhabitants of this world.

And I'll take this opportunity to say that it is *so* refreshing to read such clean copy. It should be a given, but I read so many stories these days that have copy editing issues, and it was nice to just *read* the story and escape into the world of Verdantia.

Part 4 in the Verdantia Chronicles is a great read. I started as soon as I received my copy and was instantly transported to the sci-fi fantasy world of Verdantia.

This book is about the healer Adonia (Sophie's friend, see Hers to Choose)Prince DeHelios and their quest to save the city of Nyth Uchel and its people from a black plague that has turned Nyth Uchel into a frozen wasteland. Ramsey and Steffania are sent along for moral and weapons support.

Once again Patricia weaves her magic and I find it hard to leave this world and put the story down to deal with RL matters. There are plenty of humorous moments in the book provided mainly by the clever repartee between Ramsey and Hel who turn out to be the worst of enemies but the best of friends.

While this book was great for me it didn't have quite the magic that Hers To Cherish did though I still highly recommend it.

A fantastic journey to a new world with a sentient and magjikal presence. I adored the world of Verdantia. I was barely halfway through when I found myself fervently hoping this was part of a series and that at least one of the other stories I wanted so badly to hear had already been written! Imagine my excitement to discover this was book four!! Anyone who loves science fiction, romance, fantasy, good vs evil, and a nice dose of erotica with hints of mild BDSM will love this book as much as I did.

The story involves the ability of the sentient planet to communicate with certain of the royals through rites that incorporate sex majick. Her children can heal with these rites, can create heat sources that do not deplete the natural resources of their planet, and many other things as well.

I was wrapped up in their story quickly and became attached to the main characters before very long at all. They touched my heart. The author writes with such deep feeling and artistic detail that I felt every swell of happiness along with those chills of fear and the dark oppressiveness of the evil they fought. Absolutely a five fang book. Six if I can do that! Recommended for anyone but parental guidance for the scenes of hot passionate lovemaking.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book of this series that I have read. I did struggle with the book a bit in the beginning as I had not read any of the other books within the series so I did feel as though I was missing some things having not read them first. This struggle of mine should in no way take away from the authors writing ability. My advice would be to read the others first. I will say that the one thing about the story that I just found to be really outlandish/unbelievable was the idea of powering the planet through sexual rites conducted between highborn graced with prized genetics who are trained practitioners of the art. These practitioners or magistra, if you will, are conduits who utilize this power for many things, such as powering the planet, as well as to enhance their own healing abilities. I just found the idea to be over-the-top. Other than that, the book was well done, and overall, I did enjoy the book having gotten past that idea; the story was interesting and flowed while the characters and world in which they inhabited were well-developed.

Conclusion to a Remarkable Series

This book is the fourth and conclusion of a series that has something for everyone. Alien worlds, fighting, abductions, heroics, erotica, bdsm, menage all presented in a fantasy setting that enhances and forwards the plots, till they converge in this last book. Our heroine, Nia, is a healer, warrior and has a dislike of the aristocracy which was revealed in Hers To Choose book 2. She appears in this final book with a case of very low self-esteem after her fiancee breaks it off in a most brutal fashion. Her journey to love, acceptance and her personal power is told here.

The books in the series are: 1) Hers To Command 2) Hers To Choose, 3) Hers To Cherish 4) Hers To Claim. I would recommend reading all and in order for maximum enjoyment and understanding as the characters intermingle, and reappear in the various books. My only sorrow is that this book did wrap up most of the loose ends and I want more! Maybe that extra brother Tristan who shows up near the end needs a book? Just hopeful.

I was given a copy from the author, for an honest review.

This is my first ever book that I have read from Patricia... I will say I lost myself to the story within the first few chapters. I felt like I was physically pulled into the book. Adonia who is slowly learning her own self worth & heal the damage done by an ex lover, along with Hel's help.

This is book 4 in the "Verdantia" series, I did read this book out of order & have already added the first 3 to my TBR... to be read when I'm able.

The enitre book gripped me in, the strong characters, the storyline, the sex scenes... all contributed to the magic weaved by Patricia. I loved the information given in the book, a world where sexual lust & love keeps the world thriving & alive. I need more of this series NOW!!

Adora might be my favorite character so far. She's so shy. Her self-doubt is killing me. When we first met Hel I wasn't sure about this combination! He's so intense! But it works for the best.
I loved that we learn so much about the sentient planet. Their connection to there Mother planet makes the story so beautiful and sad sometimes.
The author wrote an amazing story, and created such sexy scenes. I can't wait for book 5 and I highly recommend the serie!!
