The Spirit faces the threat of a lifetime and she will protect those she loves — even to the death The kingdom of Iden has reclaimed its hold on the capital. Yet, the Spirit, Adele, has lost the true battle against her enemy, Locien, who has done everything in his power to unravel a nation, destroy a family, and wreak havoc wherever he goes. Desperate to defeat him, Adele readily accepts the help of a mysterious man that only she can see. The Spirit finds herself facing confrontations at every angle: an enemy bent on killing her, a power corrupting her from the inside, and a kingdom on the brink of rebellion. Honor bound to serve, Adele races to save it all before the final fight can end the Spirit legacy forever.
Reckoning is the second book in The Spirit series. In the first book, Awakening, you meet the main character Adele and her two Guardians, Harper and Llaine. You learn how Adele comes about gaining her powers from The Trinity and how her kingdom (she's also a princess) is taken over by the evil wizard, Locian.
In the second book, Adele's kingdom (Iden) appears to be at peace; Adele and Prince Llaine travel to his kingdom (Seqhad) to restore Llaine to the throne after Locian had taken over his kingdom.
While most of the folks in Seqhad welcome Llaine back with open arms, there is a small group run by (I can't remember the guy's name, but he's in cahoots with Locian) who want to run the kingdom. Llaine is put on trial for killing his family (the previous king and queen and heir) in the first book.
While in Seqhad, THE SPIRIT (Adele), must use her powers of The Trinity to help Llaine and continue the fight with Locian. She must also choose between her two Guardians who both face death. Adele learns from her mentor, The First, that if she chooses to give life to someone, she must give a life in return. This leads to an internal conflict in addition to the external conflicts.
Why do I like this series? First of all, the protagonist is female. There are elements of magic and mythical creatures. There is action aplenty (there are a few fight scenes that are a bit gory, but not overly so) and an attraction between Llaine and Adele that gives it just a dash of romance.
The story is extremely well-written. As a teacher, I've highlighted many parts to use as mentor text and use in minilessons. I've already had a couple of students want to read the first book.
If you like fantasy stories with strong characters, or you know a YA reader who does, this is an excellent story from a new writer.
