I was drawn to Leigh Carron's emotional storytelling, her truly relatable characters, and the way she expertly navigated between fiery arguments, gutwrenching heartbreaks, and screen-melting love scenes. - Reese Ryan, award-winning, best-selling author of the Bourbon Brothers series
When the past and present collide… He wasn’t famous then. He was the boy next door; my foster brother’s best friend. A popular jock and out of my league. But he said he loved me. He said he’d keep my heart safe. He lied.
Now fifteen years later, I’ve picked up the fragments of my shattered heart. I’ve built a new life as a child advocacy lawyer. My food issues are quasi under control, my secrets are buried, and I’ve even made a tenuous peace with my plus-size body.
So why, why did Micah Peters—the sexy and mega famous man I fled—have to walk through my office door with a demand that will reunite me with the past and everything I left behind?
Buckle up…this second chance romance will take you on an emotional ride of explosive passion, heartbreaking revelations, and the fight for true love.
A Naked Beauty, available now, is the sizzling conclusion to Fat Girl.
I write diverse, body positive romance because ALL women deserve a sexy love story.
As a recovering yo-yo dieter who has struggled with body image, I channeled those experiences into my debut novel, Fat Girl, and its conclusion, A Naked Beauty. Sadly, I think most women, regardless of their weight or size, can identify with some aspect of body insecurity and self-doubt. I am inspired by the theme of loving yourself and discovering your own intrinsic worth. I want to bring my readers stories that are real, relatable, and entertaining—where strong characters with tough battles and troubled pasts tug at your heartstrings, turn you on, and have you cheering for a beautiful, forever love.
Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, I’m now a proud adopted Canuck, living in Calgary, Alberta, with my husband and daughter. The winters are frigid, but the sun shines 335 days of the year. Tanning in a parka—it happens! Most nights, you will find me in my home office, or on those cold nights, in front of the fireplace, tapping out the many stories in my head.
I liken writing a great romance to a box of Godiva. Decadent and delicious! You can’t stop at just one. xo
So, from time to time, GR will troll me and recommend me books that are similar to the ones that I've shelved as "all-dat-flippityfloppitystupideedoo", "communication-is-a-dirty-word" and, my personal favourite, "knee-him-in-the-balls-please". I have no idea why, but I never get any good book recommendations.
That is, until now.
FAT GIRL is the second chance romance between the recently retired NBA star, Micah Peters, and curvy child advocate, Deeana Chase. Told in dual POV, book one sees the former lovers reuniting when Mick's nephew is in need of legal representation. Needless to say, the meeting is a painful one, with both parties resentful of the other for past secrets and actions. But secrets always have a way of coming to light, and as truths are unearthed, Mick and Dee battle heartbrokenness, old habits and an eating disorder to find their happiness.
One of my absolute favourite pairings in books would have to be curvy heroines and muscular heroes. It's not hard to imagine why, especially since I love to live vicariously through these female mcs (yes, unfortunately for my awkward self, I can never seem to get past the eye contact stage with guys). So already, I'm loving the hell out of this book. Add a few insecurities, a few moments of assholelustaemia and a whole lot of hurt/angst and sexy times, and you've got a recipe that is a sure-fire winner for me.
So, why not five stars? When the reason for Dee's departure all those years ago was revealed, I couldn't help but get annoyed. Not because I couldn't understand where she was coming from because I could, I got it, I really did. What I was annoyed at was the consequences of her actions on her foster parents. It's something that struck home with me as my family had gone through a similar situation, and it reminded me of the heartache my parents went through which of course brought about all my rage-y feels. I guess children never realise how hard it is to be a parent sometimes.
All in all, I absolutely adored this book. I'll be waiting in agony until the second and final book comes out, which I hear the author is currently working on. Leigh Carron, please don't make me wait too long. My heart knows not the meaning of patience!
***Sorry if my awks ramblings made you feel uncomfortable. I have no problem sharing but if you think I share too much, please feel free to buy yourself a chocolate bar. The rush of endorphins should make you feel better in no time at all. ;)***
First off, this is a HFN, the story isn't finished yet, which I started to figure out it wouldn't be around 80% in. But, I really enjoyed Mick and Dee's story, their past and now them figuring out the future. Can't wait for the next book to see how everything finally plays out.
This is my first story by this author. This is Deeana Chase (“Dee”) and Micah Peters’ story.
The first part of their story is all about Dee and Micah having broken lives and coming from backgrounds that were filled with suffering, either emotional or physical pain.
Dee is a curvy woman who has big women insecurities and secrets which she has not shared with anyone. Being with Micah heightens her body issues because he is such an attractive man and she cannot understand why he wants to be with her. Micah is your typical good looking ladies’ man who has sowed his wild oats!
The couple falls in love and keeps their relationship a secret from their families, friends and the whole world. Then Dee makes a discovery that she needs to share with Micah but is filled with indecision because she does not want to disappoint her foster parents or have history repeat itself for Micah. Before she can share this secret with Micah she sees him in an act of betrayal. So Dee leaves her foster family and Micah with no explanation.
After not seeing each other for 15 years they meet again because Micah wants Dee to take a case which will ultimately expose her to the family she ran away from with no explanation. The fireworks begin here. The bitterness, recriminations, resentments and feelings of betrayal, as well as sexual tension explode in all directions whilst they both try to maintain some measure of control over their emotions because of the child, whom they both want to help.
The second part of the story is all about how Dee still has to deal with her body image issues, binge eating, low self-esteem and being exposed to Micah’s fame and dealing with the potential media exposure of being a big woman in a relationship with a good looking, famous man.
Micah does not want to lose Dee again or give her any excuses not to be with him after finding her again after 15 painful years without her. So he tries his best to shield her identity from the press.
The story is captivating from page 1, the author draws you in and keeps you on the edge of your seat wanting to find out what happens next. The story is a real page turner that you don’t want to put down. I absolutely loved it and I cannot wait to find out what happens in book 2. There are still some unanswered questions that need to be answered!
Deanna Chase's never expected to see her childhood sweetheart, and the only man she has ever loved, again. When he broke her heart she ran far away from not only him but her whole family and hasn't seen them since. But when he turns up at her office, angry with her but asking for her help, still as sexy as he was when she ran, it becomes increasingly difficult to say no. As they get closer Deanne is terrified he will break her heart all over again, especially when she tells him a secret she has been hiding for years...
This was a bit of an impulse purchase, I love the cover and I am also a sucker for a romance featuring a BBW, making FAT GIRL irresistible. And, although I don't regret reading this, as I did enjoy it, it also didn't fill me with excitement and have me recommending it to anyone who stood still long enough. It was nice, an enjoyable read and I would definitely try another one of Leigh Carron's books again. In fact, I plan on reading the next book in this duo when it comes out.
The romance between Deanna and Micah was certainly rocky, and switched from the present, to brief flashes of their past, showing how they got together to how they fell apart. There is a lot of emotion between Deanna and Micah, pain, love, betrayal and although Deanna's secret wasn't a surprise it was still heart-breaking, Carron packs a lot into FAT GIRL.
There was also the other aspect of the book, which is Deanna helping her brother, the one she hasn't seen for a very long time, keep custody of his adopted son. I can't wait to see what happens with this part of the story line, Carron has set up a bit of a mystery, a tragic one I suspect, about his family and what happened to his birth mother.
I did enjoy this book, I liked the characters and although the romance was slow to start, I can't wait to see how it all concludes. I will definitely be reading the next and final book when it comes out.
This is a slow burn story due to the deeply challenging mental and emotional issues the fmc is dealing with. Which are a struggle to read because they are trigger because Carron does a great job of basically exposing something so painful. I’ll be honest and say I like reading about the confident plus size characters over the ones struggling because the spotlight creeps too close to home at times. This is a layered story and very much the setup. You get some spicy but the majority or backstory and character introductions. However, it’s an emotional gripping page turner and while I didn’t immediately start book 2 out of a sense of a little self preservation I wasn’t able to put it off for more than a few hours.
Well, this was a book that really wasn’t what I was expecting, but I still managed to really enjoy. Leigh Carron did a wonderful job of making incredible characters that had a lot of depth to them.
I will give you a word of warning though – this is very much for mature readers of 18+. I knew this was a romance, but I didn’t know the sexual scenes were going to be so descriptive; otherwise I probably wouldn’t have picked it up. Erotica is not my genre and I avoid it at all costs >.> So be prepared for that. However, I still did like this story.
The beginning drew me in. We start with the scene where Mick walks into Dee’s office and asks for her to take a case. And even though we know nothing of what has happened between them yet, we can tell there is a lot of anger between them in the past, and tension upon them meeting again. But you can also tell there is a lot of chemistry there too, and it made for an interesting mix. This is a dual point of view, so we get to see things from both Mick’s and Dee’s viewpoints. Which is good, because these characters see the same happenings in different ways, and since emotions are so important in this novel it’s good to see both of theirs.
I loved the characters, and Dee was my favourite. Whenever she gets into a difficult patch she tends to either run away or throw up her defenses, which is only acceptable if you consider her past. She’s been through a tricky past after she lived in plenty of foster homes, saw her mother die and then found peace with her foster parents Mama and Papa T. But something happened one night that causes her to run away, and we never get to find out what this is until the end. When I did discover what it was my heart went out to her so much, it was unbelievable.
Seeing as Dee is overweight the themes of self-esteem, fame and appearance come into this, as well as accepting who you are. There is also family abuse as well as coping with death. The funny thing is I recently read Cinder & Ella which also deals with self-esteem and fame, and Only theGood Die Young which also ties in with court and law.
Dee is a lawyer, which means there is some mention of a court case. I wished that this was a more prominent thing in the book. Amongst the themes and the romance it kind of got shoved to the side and that was sad, because it was something I felt should have more importance.
The ending to the book was really sudden and abrupt! I thought it was the ending of a chapter so I turned for more… but it just wasn’t there D: At least there is a book two coming up, which I can’t wait to read :)
I really enjoyed this book, and the character development was incredible to witness. I could relate to the main character in so many ways. I especially appreciated how the book addressed important topics like weight, insecurities, and relationships with food, among others.
Although, not a true cliffhanger, I did think that this was going to be a standalone, and not to be continued
I loved how the ED has been shown, and the sense of treatment that Dee got to combat her ED.
I’m also still trying to figure out what she suspects from the grandparents if not physical.
Then we have the other plot when it comes to that news, reporter, or tabloid reporter.
It was getting just good enough where I was like. Yeah this is gonna be a four but I just need a little bit more, and I also did not like to be continued plot, especially if I didn’t already know it was going to be one.
But I will say that this has entice me to want to read the rest because I need to figure out what’s about to happen and what are the revelations that all three of their, kind of, secrets.
This story was very emotional. Dee and Mick had a love that was lost for fifteen years because of a miss understanding. They are together now but a lot was unsolved. On to Part 2.

FAT GIRL is the deeply emotional love story of Mick and Dee who have some serious history that neither of them has managed to get over. Back when they were dating in high school, Dee disappeared from Mick's life and from the lives of the foster family who loved and adored her. Their paths cross again when Mick, a retired professional basketball player, must come to the aid of a little boy who is about to lose the family he loves. There is only one person he can trust to take on the boy's case--Dee, who has become a successful child advocacy attorney.
Mick doesn't understand why Dee ran off all those years ago. Nor does he understand what right she has to be angry with him, when it was Dee that abandoned him and everyone who loved her. While Dee doesn't want anything to do with Mick, she feels a sense of obligation to the boy, and to the family she abandoned.
As Mick and Dee are forced to work together on the case, they are also inevitably drawn to each other. However, the secrets of the past rarely stay buried. As they come to light, it may be more than either of them can handle.
I was immediately drawn into FAT GIRL by Leigh Carron's powerful story, emotional storytelling and her truly relatable characters. She expertly navigates between scenes that run the gamut of human emotions: fiery arguments, gutwrenching heartbreaks and screen-melting love scenes. I am eagerly anticipating the release of the next book, A NAKED BEAUTY.
Note: This is part one of a two-part series. However, the relationship has a satisfying HFN conclusion and I highly-recommend this book.
The main character in this book Dee aka Deeana Chase is amazingly REAL. I loved her as well as her faults. I will say the author does a wonderful job by creating Dee and her issues. Sometimes I didnt think they were issues I thought maybe she was normal and looking at Elle or Vogue wanting a "look" she saw but NO. There is a little eating disorder, therapy, binges and real life within these pages. I really recommend this one.
Now for the others. It is not easy to give a review without a synopsis but the other characters are equally as grand as Dee. Micah was someone who got away. I really think that the separation, which was revealed and is stunning!, had to happen. Micah was under the thumb of an abusive law enforcement dad. It was heartbreaking to read about these kids brought together by a common bond- foster homes.
Anyone who knows me, knows that I AM a BIG basketball fan. I have virtually no life when October comes, its all my ballers! Micah is a basketball player who played for the Heat and then the Bulls. WOW just my ideal guy. His career is now over and he enjoyed 15 years of fame with the perks and notoriety, but something is missing... and I think it is the love he lost.
If you want a real moving story with some sexy chick lit vibes then grab this you wont be disappointed. I loved it! I want more from this author pronto!!
FAT GIRL is the first book in this provocative two-part series about love and self-acceptance
I've read a lot of annoying "fat girl" stories/romances. This one finds the balance and gets it right! Great character development and intriguing plot twists! It also doesn't hurt that Mick is smokin' hot!
Despite the drama and more serious themes in the story, there are still smexy scenes and they're actually worked appropriately into the plot!
Can't wait for "A Naked Beauty"! Carron looks like an author to watch!
Started off well and then at some point I got over it. The whole book revolved around a court case and then nothing happens, which means another book. This all could have been solved in one book. I need to get out of my book slump :(
I love it! I love it. I hate that #2 isn't out yet! I want more. I want to know about the case. I want their relationship public. I want her pregnant. This book was a tear jerked for me in a few spots. I enjoyed the heck out of it.
Why nobody warned me about the cliffhanger!!! OMG! What am I gonna do? How much do I have to wait? Ughhh... Besides all that, I loved the story, I love Dee, I love Mick, loved it, loved it!
Mick and Dee's second chance romance landed on my Kindle at the perfect moment. I like that we get glimpses of their "before" intertwined with the chaos of their present. What do we know? Dee and Mick dislike each other so much...with a passion!! Any inkling of love that once existed between them is so far lost, you can't even see it anymore.
In present time, he seeks her out because he is need of a good lawyer to represent the adopted child of his best friend, who also happens to be Dee's old foster brother. She's not spoken to either of these men in years, but somehow she feels drawn to help them out. Due to her delicate childhood, she now advocates for children in the legal system because she knows that sometimes the littlest ones need the biggest lawyers to have their backs.
This story focuses on Mick and Dee rekindling their relationship through their the mutual in work with his nephew. We get to read about their amazing beginning as high school sweethearts, experiencing all their firsts right along side them. I wasn't expecting Micka backstory to break my heart like it did, so that made their breakup even more devastating to anticipate. How could they fall apart?!
I really liked the ups and downs of this story, and getting to know the good, bad, and ugly of their relationship. I'm so glad this book is a duet because I want to dive deeper into their relationship and see how much deeper these two can get.
I had to let this book seep into me because the idea of our body insecurities stopping us from loving others is deep. The story is about Dee and Mick each dealing with enormous challenges in their childhoods that affect their adulthoods.
They meet when Dee becomes the foster child of the Torres. Mick is the best friend of Victor Torres and lives next door. They’re teenagers who fall in love but secrets and miscommunications tear them apart.
15 years later they meet again because Dee is a child advocacy lawyer and works as a lawyer for a family member. Mick and Dee get their second chance at love. The book ends with them reconnecting. The rest of their story is in A Naked Beauty.
This book touched me on so many levels. It’s well written. The characters are so fleshed out that you feel like you know them and can identify with their pains and strengths. It’s one of those books we’re the story engulfs and draws you in.
Read the TW before you read this book: Miscarriage, drug abuse, eating disorders, abuse, alcoholism, drug overdose, abandonment
This book I loved, I loved it because this almighty tall dark handsome celebrity loves his childhood love that is a plus size woman, curves, dimples, lumps, stretched marks. He doesn't see anything other than beautiful. They both have a past and both have baggage but they work through it to be together again. ❤️
I love Dee & Mick. I just did not want to put this book down. I had to know what happened next. Now, I need book to go found out what happen with everything.
Years after fleeing small-town Springvale, Illinois, Deanna Chase has picked up the pieces of her shattered heart and built a new life for herself as a child advocacy lawyer. Her food addiction is quasi under control, her secrets are buried, and she has even made a tenuous peace with her plus-size body. Until…
Micah Peters—the very sexy and now famous man she fled— walks through her office door and sends Dee reeling. His demand that she help a young boy caught in a custody battle will reunite her with the past she left behind. Torn between duty and self-preservation, Dee isn’t easy to convince.
But when obligation wins, the former lovers get more than they bargained for—a searing passion that burns hotter than ever and startling revelations about what really happened the fateful night she left.
Will the truth set Dee free to love again? Or will past hurts and lingering insecurities destine her to walk away from her heart again, this time for good?
FAT GIRL is the first book in this provocative two-part series about love and self-acceptance.
Thoughts:
I think it may just be me judging from the other reviews but I didn't like Dee's character... like at all. So she is supposed to be this really great child advocacy lawyer and NOT ONCE did she even comment to HERSELF that it wasn't exactly ethical to get involved romantically with one of the character witnesses for the case she was supposedly defending. She's supposed to have the child's best interests in mind and for 90% of the book she's drooling after her childhood sweetheart.
Dee's got baggage... hell I bet you could fill a cruise ship with all of her baggage and still have one or two suitcases left over... Her mom sucked growing up and she kept getting put into foster care whenever her bipolar mother couldn't handle having a kid. Then she falls in with a good family when she was 12 or 14 ... I can't remember (actually I didn't care to remember) and the boy next door (who was also dealing with an abusive parent) stole her heart.
BUT!!! Because he was some popular jock and she was the chubby girl that no one really liked except to tease and torture, he wanted to keep their relationship a secret to "protect her" and also he couldn't man up and tell the girls adoptive father... like this is going to end well...
so what does she do in response? LEAVES! Makes a run for it hoping to never return.
Fast forward several years and Mick walks into her practice looking to hire her to defend her foster brothers adopted son. There are some rich as crap grandparents hellbent on taking this kid back with them even though he says he doesn't want to go.
That part of the story I liked... I liked it when she was using her freaking brain to reason out why Dwayne doesn't want to go back with them. Something is up but we don't get to see very much of that storyline because the entire thing is BOGGED down with the drama and angst between Dee and Mick.
And when I say drama... I mean drama... he's an ass... she's a complete head case. Yup they do have heat between the two of them but good lord it's exhausting.
Oh and BTW... I HATE the cliffhanger. Now I have to decide if I'm going to waste my time dealing with these idiots again. I liked the secondary characters of Dee's friends Jordyn and Lexie. I'm somewhat curious about what's going to happen with them. But I'm on the fence to see if it's enough for me to read the next part... whenever that comes out...
Oh boy do I have a goody for you today I rec'd a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest opinion and this is my very honest opinion -- It's called "Fat Girl" by Leigh Carron- now you can't judge a book by it's name as this book is not about a girl being fat. But about a women that is a children's advocate. And she must face her past and the man , and foster family that she left in the past. She had her reasons - she felt betrayed by the man that she was going to marry - . However his best friend did not like the fact that she was going to marry him. Mick had been caught with another girl - not just holding her but she was on his lap. And his best bud, Victor was there just laughing at the party. Of course there was a lot of drinking going on. So, when Dee saw the beautiful girl on Micks lap she ran. She left a note for her foster parents saying : Thank you" looked in on the girls, and put her engagement ring in an envelope for MIck. Now Mick need her help, well not him but his nephew- Dywane. His bio-grandparents want custody of him. They want to take him away from every thing and every one that he knows. Can Dee be his voice in court and keep him with Victor an Isabella?? Well for that answer you will need to read the book. And what happens to Dee and Mick?? The characters in this story , I found are well detailed, and meaty. You can actually see them. As for the scenes - well Ms Carron has done a fantastic job of describing them with detail . You can picture the court battle, office scenes, etc. I found this story to be so real life. It actually takes place nowadays- do you realize that?? I mean the custody battles. The excitement-page turning don't put me down till you finish the book. It is totally amazing-awesome-terrific- and Ms Carron truly has a way with words. This is the first time I have read a book by her-and I am so looking forward to more!!! The rating that I give this is a 30 out of 5 stars. And I would recommend it to all. It is definitely a MUST READ!!! And available NOW ON AMAZON - YOU CAN ALSO FIND ON SMASHWORDS!!! SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR ??? RUSH DON'T STOP GET YOUR COPY NOW!!!!
This was amazing!!!! It was well written, had engaging and likable characters, and kept a steady pace without being crazy dramatic. I also really appreciate that mistakes were owned up to as mistakes, and not crazy misunderstandings that would never happen. Because good people and people who are in love make mistakes too... and it always pisses me off when novels try to make them all "misunderstandings." Micha is a great guy, and those times when he was being purposefully cold or when he made that mistake doesn't make him less of one. You can tell how much he loves Dee and everything else just ends up being pride. I'm also glad that Dee acknowledged her role in everything. I've found that apologies are almost 95% of the time a two-way street, and sadly that's rarely how it is in romances lately. There's usually just one person begging and pleading while the other did no wrong, and that's just not realistic.
Now, with a 15 year gap there obviously is some sort of misunderstanding, but given the strengths and weaknesses of these two characters it's completely believable. After everything Dee went through as a child, the assumptions she makes are pretty realistic and being as non confrontational as she is, running was the only thing that made sense. They are both very proud people, and are afraid to show others how they really feel, which ends up keeping them apart for so long. But once they're back together it's like no time has passed at all, and Micha can't stay away from her.
I'm always skeptical of starting second chance romances because some times I feel like I've missed out on the best moments between the two and I have a hard time connecting to the story and their relationship. So I was extremely relieved that we got flashbacks of the more important times in their relationship (especially from both POVs).
This is definitely one of the best books I've read this year and I will be anxiously awaiting the conclusion to their story :)
Fat Girl is a journey through Dee's life, what made her who she is and her lifelong battle with food addiction and self image. Dee is a plus size girl, the upper teens while her two best friends are model skinny. Dee has a certain comfort level with her body size but that's mainly because she constantly dresses to hide every inch of skin she can. Dee's struggle with food comes from early childhood and her relationship with her mother but continues into her adult life where she finally has a handle on it, for the most part. The plus side is she knows what her problem is, has identified her triggers and works hard to avoid them. The history between her and Micah is heartbreaking, the cause for her running from everything she knows and everyone who loves her and accepts her as she is made me cry ugly tears, not the occasional drop sliding down your face, no this was ugly crying, Carron did such a wonderful job bringing us into Dee's life that I hurt for her when reading this book. Thank goodness for Micah and his inability to give up on Dee, I'm not sure this book would have been as good as it is had he backed off an walked away. He's a huge part of Dee's past and future, and I can't wait for the next book to see where this goes. Dee's food and body image issues are something that all of us can relate to on some level. If your a size zero or twenty-two, if at any point in your live you have disliked something about your body you can relate to this book. No I have never been as large as Dee but I understand her struggles and her fight to be okay with her body. The only reason Fat Girl doesn't get five stars for me is the ending, we still have issues to resolve that won't come until book two, which I will be impatiently waiting for.
I really liked this book. I loved the two protagonists. I love him. I want him to be my boyfriend.Where are you Mick? Where are you? I'm waiting for youuuuuu!! If Deanna makes up her mind I volunteer!! Ahahahah He is so sweeeeet, so head over heels for her, crazy in love, so attentive toward her, hot, a bit naughty and the list could last forever. He is Obviously Mick is part of my fictional boyfriends'list now *_* Deanna have and I can totally relate to her. I'm chubby like her so I know the feeling. Even though I would have liked more flashbacks about Dee and Mick as teenagers. It would be awesome read about their first encounter. What they would have thought of each other. Their first impressions *__* Awww *w* But this doesn't change the fact that I liked "Fat girl" very very very very much!!! It isn't the usual erotic novel. That's more. Absolutely recommended. Seriously is there another Micah Peters out there?!
P.S. Every time I think about Dee and Mick I start to sing "Just give me a reason" by Pink feat. Nate Ruess!
Just give me a reason Just a little bit's enough Just a second we're not broken just bent And we can learn to love again
P.P.S. And I'm looking forward to reading the sequel "Naked Beauty" *-*["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
This book could have a higher rating if there wasn't a cliff hanger. I missed the part were it stated it was a cliff hanger. I know cliff hanger are the in thing. I'm so over them. Rant over.
Fat Girl ( eye roll), is a story of Deanna Chase a child advocate lawyer. She is hired by Mick her childhood boyfriend/ ex NBA player. Deanna and Mick have a sad history of misunderstanding. Both suffered some forms of child abuse. That have lingering effects in their adults lives.
Deanna has a eating disorder, anxiety issues, and body issues that just name a few. Despite these things she isn't whinny or overly bitchy. She is a equal balance of both that makes her enjoyable character and relatable.
Mick was abuse as child by a father who blames him for what he could have been. Mick isn't living his dream he's living someone else's and he starting to live his dream.
The main story is the two people getting back together. I found the secondary story is about Deanna helping Mick and his/her (read the book) to allow their relative keep foster child.
Secondary character was good. I found that story had a lot going on. Which explains why you need two books. One book is about two people getting back together and addressing past issues. The book. Still needs to address secondary storyline, that needs to be rapped up in next story.
The book was well written. I was annoyed by the cliff hanger. The book was long and descriptive.
Fat Girl wasn’t what I expected. It isn’t about a “fat” girl who lives a “fat” girl life. It is about Deanna Chase, who lives the life beating herself up about everything. She is heavier than she thinks is socially acceptable, she lived a life in foster care never finding the family she thought she wanted, and that everyone who she ever loves will end up leaving her. Although this wasn’t a really heavy story to read it was not a light and easy one either. I struggled with all of Deanna’s lack of self esteem. She had the life she wanted and didn’t know how to accept that it could be her forever.
Micah, Mick, is amazing. I was able to see him with his character flaws, his anger and how he reacts to what he can’t control, but truly he had a lot of patience and understanding for Deanna. Not only was he hot and sexy with eyes only for his true love, he knew how to build her up and make her a better person. Together Mick and Deanna can rule their world and keep each other in check and live happily ever after.
Fat Girl is a book I would definitely recommend to my friends. I am not sure I would want YA to read it, as there are heavier topics covered.
