Sisters Rebecca and Connie Cobb live relatively quiet lives in their small North Carolina hometown. Quiet, that is, until threatening notes show up to disturb the peace. Trying to discover who is sending the notes leads them to investigate long-dead relatives and a family heirloom, the dictionary passed down through generations. Connie and Rebecca rush to figure out the secrets enclosed in the family dictionary with the help of local cop, Brad Hamilton. But will they find the clues in time?
Lisa Walker was born outside of Chicago, grew up in Tallahassee, Florida, and went to graduate school in Arizona. She returned to the South to take a job as a sociology professor at UNC Charlotte in 1998, and the rest is history. Her Cobb Sisters Mysteries are labors of love, born during National Novel Writing Months (nanowrimo.org), once she finally ran out of excuses.
If this was based just on storyline I think I would have given this book 5 stars. However the mistakes were very distracting so I had to drop a star. Misspelled words. Words left off. Extra words thrown in. I know that is the editors job not the author. I loved the characters. The story moved along well and some real surprises. Good and bad. I'm very glad I read this book.
This is an interesting cozy mystery that mixes early Rowan Co., North Carolina history and the search for a violent criminal, who is terrorizing sisters, Rebecca and Connie. The sisters are puzzled that the mystery involves an old family dictionary that they inherited from Grandmother Irene. In addition, several characters begin romantic relationships. Sensitive readers should know that a dog is killed by the deranged villain. The story flows well, and I regretted saying goodbye to the sisters.
Interesting mystery, kept my attention start to finish. Believable and likeable characters. Not the same run of the mill storyline. I want to continue the series to see what happens with everyone. The only problem is there were several editing mistakes in my kindle version. Not enough to ruin the flow of the story, but I do get annoyed with them. Otherwise it would be five stars.
I got through this book in one evening. It was entertaining and started off with the action right away. It is an easy read, and the three main characters are fleshed out just enough to believe. It's not tremendously deep, but there was a dictionary and a little Colonial history involved, so I found that interesting. There was a shock near the end that felt a bit out of place, but it was dealt with well enough. All told, if you want an easy read, this one worked for me.
This was a very good read.....I enjoy books about duos....family's...partners... this one was nice that the police weren't there every two chapters telling them to mind their own business (of course Brad & Doug and their teams were there doing most of the investigations .....and they are the police. ) THANK YOU FOR A VERY ENJOYABLE READING EXPERIENCE. 🐼
the way history is the major part of the book.the way the historical part of the story set in North Carolina show that people will do evil this vs to cover up the past.
Nice mystery type story with historical elements. Very interesting. Really enjoyed this book and will be getting book 2. Worth reading if you like history with a little romance and mystery.
This is a pretty good mystery, not entirely predictable as so many cozies are. I liked the characters, if not their nicknames for each other. But there were so many typos and mistakes in editing that it was very distracting. Still, it is worth reading if you are a fan of cozies.
This was a pretty neat mystery. I enjoyed reading about the history of the Cobb family and even though the ending was a let down. The characters seemed dry but did improve as I kept reading
A fun, if formulaic, story. Mystery lite with some interesting history (I wonder if Lisa Walker based the sisters' ancestors on actual colonial thought leaders?) and a heap of Carolina charm.
Interesting plot but grammatical and editing errors detracted from the read. Finished the book but probably will not read book two. Author needs to find a better proofreader.
