About the author

Walter Bendix Schönflies Benjamin was a German Jewish philosopher, cultural critic, media theorist, and essayist. An eclectic thinker who combined elements of German idealism, Romanticism, Western Marxism, Jewish mysticism, and neo-Kantianism, Benjamin made influential contributions to aesthetic theory, literary criticism, and historical materialism. He was associated with the Frankfurt School and also maintained formative friendships with thinkers such as playwright Bertolt Brecht and Kabbalah scholar Gershom Scholem. He was related to German political theorist and philosopher Hannah Arendt through her first marriage to Benjamin's cousin Günther Anders, though the friendship between Arendt and Benjamin outlasted her marriage to Anders. Both Arendt and Anders were students of Martin Heidegger, whom Benjamin considered a nemesis.
Among Benjamin's best known works are the essays "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" (1935) and "Theses on the Philosophy of History" (1940). His major work as a literary critic included essays on Charles Baudelaire, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Franz Kafka, Karl Kraus, Nikolai Leskov, Marcel Proust, Robert Walser, Trauerspiel and translation theory. He also made major translations into German of the Tableaux Parisiens section of Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal and parts of Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu.
Of the hidden principle organizing Walter Benjamin's thought Scholem wrote unequivocally that "Benjamin was a philosopher", while his younger colleagues Arendt and Theodor W. Adorno contend that he was "not a philosopher". Scholem remarked "The peculiar aura of authority emanating from his work tended to incite contradiction". Benjamin himself considered his research to be theological, though he eschewed all recourse to traditionally metaphysical sources of transcendentally revealed authority.
In 1940, at the age of 48, Benjamin died by suicide at Portbou on the French Spanish border while attempting to escape the advance of the Third Reich. Though popular acclaim eluded him during his life, the decades following his death won his work posthumous renown.

He who cannot take sides should keep silent.

It’s so easy to hang Benjamin with his own rope that it’s not even fair. The guy’s whole career was one long bout of coquettish indecision. A Marxist who didn’t bother to read Marx, a fellow traveller who never got around to joining the communist party, a Zionist who stayed the hell out of Israel: Benjamin was committed to nothing but his own refusal to commit. And that’s okay. I can sympathize. For a writer living amid the convulsions of the Weimar republic, a certain political aloofness was no doubt the price of intellectual purity. Alright. No problem. But will the academic Pharisees please stop pretending that Benjamin was anything other than a slippery philosophical customer? Sure, he was a terribly brilliant thinker, but his brilliance was clouded by what is politely called “opacity”. Less politely, a sceptical reader might suggest that his portentous obscurity is merely a diversionary feint in a sophisticated game of three-card Monte, a game played at the highest theoretical levels, to be sure, but still a bit of a rip-off in the end. Even Gershom Scholem accused him of “ambiguity, adventurism and acrobatics”, and he was a close friend (he was also quite possibly Benjamin’s intellectual equal, and therefore in a position to call him on his high-grade bullshit.) The Viennese satirist Karl Kraus (no mental midget himself) was mystified by the long essay Benjamin wrote about him: “Maybe it’s psychoanalysis,” he conceded with a shrug. (Benjamin scholars, by the way, tend to quote this as an example of Kraus’s wilful obtuseness, but if Kraus was obtuse, then the rest of us are drooling imbeciles).

But you know what? Despite all my reservations, I still encourage you—no, I double-dog dare you to read Benjamin. The occasional, forehead-slapping insights he provides are worth all the squirming and impatience and muttered f-bombs he’ll cost you. Half the time I honestly have no idea what he’s talking about, and half the time I think he’s plain wrong. But the other half (don’t knock my fractions: I’m an English major) I bow down before his beautifully convoluted mind.

چرا بعضی آدم‌های خوب این‌قدر کم‌گو و گزیده‌گو هستند؟ موضوعات این کتاب در عین تنوع و اشاره به حوزه‌های مختلف به شدت موجز و کوتاه‌اند. و از آن دست مطالبی‌ هستند که یک جمله‌اش به تنهایی می‌تواند آغازگر بحث‌های جدی باشد. اگر والتر بنیامین یک «استیو تولتز» درونی می‌داشت مقاله‌اش به جای هشتاد صفحه، هشتصد صفحه می‌شد. من هم به فراخور سطح آگاهی‌ام که چندان هم زیاد و وسیع نبود، از این موضوعات محتوا دریافت کردم. به ویژه درباره‌ ادبیات. دانش بیش‌تر در زمینه فلسفه احتمالا خواننده را به دریافت‌های بیش‌تری می‌رساند.
کتاب را بخوانید. محال است که پشیمان‌تان کند.

شاید اگر بنیامین در عصر "اینترنت" زندگی می‌کرد، این قبیل نوشته‌هایش تبدیل به پست‌های نامتعارف یک وبلاگ می‌شد! می‌خواهم بگویم نوشته‌های کتاب بیشتر از همه به نوشته‌های مالیخولیایی یک وبلاگنویس شباهت دارد که برای خودش می‌نویسد. افکار رویاگونه‌اش را بیرون می‌کشد و روی کاغذ می‌آورد، بی‌آنکه از قاعده خاصی تبعیت کند. "آدورنو" معتقد است که همین فرم مالیخولیایی رویاگونه که به ندرت، به صراحت مفهومی را مطرح می‌کند، ذهن را به اندیشیدن وا می‌دارد، اندیشیدن به آنچه در قالب کلمات، بیان شدنی نیست.

در انتهای نسخه‌ای که من خواندم، دو نقد از "سوزان سانتاگ" و "تئودور آدورنو" درباره کتاب، ضمیمه شده است؛ هر دو سرشار از تعریف و تمجیدهایی که نثر بنیامین را در حد آثار یک پیامبر بالا می‌برند. اما راستش را بخواهید به نظر شخصی من، پیش از فاجعه پیامرسان‌های دسته‌جمعی اینترنتی و اینستاگرام، در فضای وبلاگستان فارسی، می‌توانستی به وفور آدم‌هایی را پیدا کنی که به این سبک می‌نویسند. آدم‌هایی که رویاهایشان را به تعبیر "آدورنو" نه به مثابه وجوهی از ناخودآگاه که به مثابه یک "عین" به تصویر می‌کشند: "رویاهایی در بیداری." نوشته‌هایی که بیرون کشیدن معنی از آن‌ها دشوار است و به هزار راه ذهن را به بازی کشف معانی می‌کشند. اما، وقتی کسی همچون بنیامین چنین متن‌هایی می‌نویسد، می‌توانم، درست یا غلط همیشه امیدوار باشم که چیز درخشانی در میانشان هست که من بخاطر بی‌اطلاعی و بی‌سوادی شخصی‌ام آن را ندیده‌ام و همیشه راه بازگشت و دوباره خواندن و دوباره اندیشیدن، باز است.

خیلی از مطالبش را متوجه نشدم، بخشی از مطالبش را متوجه شدم و نکته‌های نهفته در آن‌ها را پسندیدم و شدیدا تحسین کردم و در مواردی هم احساس کردم صرفا در حال مطالعه هذیان‌گویی‌های یک ذهن پریشانم که قرار هم نیست معنای خاصی داشته باشد، ولی به خواندنش می‌ارزد.

نمیدونم برای خوندن این کتاب زیادی پیر و بی حوصله شدم یا هنوز برای درکش خیلی جوون و سطحی ام، که هر چی بود و هر چه کردم محتوای کتاب با هیچ صبوری و مدارایی در حوصله ام نگنجید...

Çok inandığım bir söz vardır ; “habent sua fata libelli”, yani kitapların kaderi okuyucularına bağlıdır. “Tek Yön”, yazarın ilk kitaplarından, 1928’de yazmış. Deneme ve aforizmaların toplandığı bir kitap. Walter Benjamin’in kitaplarının kaderini de okuyucular belirlemiş. Çok fazla tutulmamış, geniş okuyucu kitlelerince benimsenmemiş.
Aksine edebiyat çevrelerinde çok değer verilmiş, yere göğe konulmamış. Çünkü bu kesim onu “lakonizm”in en yetkin kalemlerinden biri olarak görüyorlar. Yani özlü söz söyleme, kısa ve öz olarak bir fikri en az kelime veya ifade kullanarak anlatma ustası.
Doğrusu ben de okuyucular safında yerimi aldım. Gerek denemelerini, gerek aforizmalarını ortalamanın çok üstünde bulmadım. Hatta ağır ve yoğun bir uslupla yazıldığını bile söyleyebilirim. Edebiyatla profesyonel olarak ilgilenenler farklı düşünüyorlar gördüğüm kadarıyla. YKY Cogito dergisi kalınca “Walter Benjamin” başlıklı bir sayı da çıkarmış.
Başka W. Benjamin okurum tabii ki ancak öncelikli listemde olmaz.

ربما تكمن مشكلة هذا الكتاب، لا في الترجمة، كما سبق لبعض الأصدقاء القول، لكن في طبيعة النصوص نفسها. نصوص تعتبر "منعزلة ثقافيًا" إلى حد كبير، إن بسبب طبيعة ما تناقشه، أو بسبب زمن المشكلات نفسها التي تدور حولها التأملات
بعض النصوص عن البورجوازية، والآخر مشاهد من ذاكرة الكاتب، وكثير منها هو تأملات في مواضيع عابرة، وأخرى حول فن الأدب والمقال والكتابة، وكثير منها كذلك حول السياسة والدين، والبروليتاريا والبرجوازية والدولة والفلسفة والأحلام والثورة والمتسولين
ربما عيب الكتاب أنه ترجم بعيدا عن أرضه، وأنه لم يخدم معلوماتيا بشكل كاف

Opening rant
There must be a special place in Hell for people who, when browsing library books, put them back on the wrong shelf. A few months ago, I borrowed Walter Benjamin’s One Way Street in Dutch translation from the Muntpunt library. I very much enjoyed reading it again and took some notes as I sensed that I might want to come back to it later and write a review. To my horror, however, the book is now marked “missing” in the library catalogue. I went to look for it myself, browsing through the nearby shelves but to no avail. Since the book keeps haunting me, I found no other solution than to download the English translation from the internet, trying to make sense of my notes. Given that the page numbers I jotted down do not correspond to this edition, I am having a hard time trying to reconstruct the little “Aha-Erlebnisse” I had while reading. Anyway, even if I cannot be sure, I guess that this is (more or less) what I wanted to write.

Reading Impressions
While One Way Street is a deceptively accessible text, it is impossible to pin down or to label in any meaningful way. First published in 1928, this slim volume contains 60 short texts written between 1923 and 1926. Some consist of one or several sentences; the large majority are between one and two pages long and the most elaborate one is a 12-page essay on the social conditions in the German Weimar Republic at the time of hyperinflation.

The writing alternates continuously between the personal and the universal. The shorter fragments are often framed as maxims or aphorisms like the examples below:

Fancy goods:
“Gifts must affect the receiver to the point of shock.”

Hardware:
“The killing of a criminal can be moral – but never its legitimation.”

Arc Lamp:
“The only way of knowing a person is to love them without hope.”

One Way Street also includes several series of impersonal “theses” presented as numbered paragraphs, similarly to the Theses on the Philosophy of History, Benjamin’s last major work. The piece entitled "Teaching Aid", for example, lists seven principles on “How to write fat books” whereas "Post no Bills" consists of thirteen theses each on “The writer’s technique”, the “The critic’s technique” and “Against snobs”. The three examples below are taken from the middle section:

Teaching Aid:
[…]
“I. The critic is the strategist in the literary battle.
II. He who cannot take sides should keep silent.
[…]
X. Genuine polemics approach a book as lovingly as a cannibal spices a baby.
[…]”

Much of the writing, is more personal, however. Many of the fragments are written in the first person and evoke the author’s dreams. While some are quite poetic, others are more sinister:

Travel Souvenirs:
“Sky. – As I stepped from a house in a dream the night sky met my eyes. It shed intense radiance. For in this plenitude of stars the images of the constellations stood sensuously present. A Lion, a Maiden, a Scale and many others shone lividly down, dense clusters of stars, upon the earth. No moon was to be seen.”

Closed for alterations:
“In a dream I took my life with a gun. When it went off I did not wake up but saw myself for a while lying. Only then did I wake.”

The most characteristic pieces of writing in One Way Street, however, are neither “subjective” nor “objective” but both at the same time. They take the form of what Benjamin himself would later refer to as “Denkbilder”. This Dutchism (which translates literally as “thought images”) refers to a style of writing which Adorno once described as “scribbled picture-puzzles” (“gekritzelte Vexierbilder”) in which the subjective and the objective, the sensual and the conceptual are intrinsincally intertwined. In a “Denkbild” as Benjamin conceives it, the concrete, material image prompts philosophical thinking leading to new insights into reality which cannot be fully abstracted from the narrated image itself. The following two examples illustrate the concept:

Come Back! All Is Forgiven:
“Like one performing the giant swing at the horizontal bar, each boy spins for himself the wheel of fortune from which, sooner or later, the momentous lot shall fall. For only that which we knew or practiced at fifteen will one day constitute our attraction. And one thing therefore can never be made good: having neglected to run away from home. From forty-eight hours’ exposure in those years, as in a caustic solution, the crystal of life’s happiness forms.”

Travel Souvenirs:
“Naples, Museo Nazionale. – Archaic statues offer in their smiles the consciousness of their bodies to the onlooker, as a child holds out to us freshly picked flowers untied and unarranged; later art laces its expressions more tightly, like the adult who binds the lasting bouquet with cutting grasses.”

As you will have gathered from the quotes above, One Way Street touches on many topics. So many actually, that the question what the book is even about is a difficult one to answer. I was struck in particular by three recurring themes.

1/ Kulturkritik: Benjamin’s tactical writing practice

In One Way Street Benjamin criticizes several aspects of contemporary German/European society and culture. Its “soulless luxuriance” ("Manorially Furnished Ten-Room Appartment"), its “helpless fixation on notions of security and property” ("Imperial Panorama") its “conformism” and the way human behaviour has become overdetermined by “mass instincts” ("Imperial Panorama" and "Germans, Drink German Beer!", the complete lack of irony in contemporary German culture ("Imperial Panorama") and the loss of any type of “cosmic experience” ("To the Planetarium") etc.

While some of his observations echo the Marxist tradition, Benjamin hardly is a conventional Marxist. For one thing, his critique is not underpinned by any coherent theory of society or historical change. This lack of systematic theoretical underpinning is not a bug but a feature, however. It does not result from a flaw or an oversight but constitutes an intrinsic characteristic of Benjamin’s tactical writing practice which aims to perturb the settled social order by targeted interventions rather than supplant it by an alternative vision with universal aspirations. At least, that’s how I understand the “Thought Image” in the programmatic opening fragment:

Filling Station:
“The construction of life is at present in the power far more of facts than of convictions, and of such facts as have scarcely ever become the basis of convictions. Under these circumstances, true literary activity cannot aspire to take place within a literary framework – this is, rather the habitual expression of its sterility. Significant literary effectiveness can come into being only in a strict alternation between action and writing; it must nurture the inconspicuous forms that fit its influence in active communities better than does the pretentious, universal gesture of the book — in leaflets, brochures, articles, and placards. Only this prompt language shows itself actively equal to the moment. Opinions are to the vast apparatus of social existence what oil is to machines: one does not go up to a turbine and pour machine oil over it; one applies a little to hidden spindles and joints that one has to know.”

This desire to unhinge “the vast apparatus of social existence” by means of a critical writing practice focused on the “hidden spindles and joints” also explains Benjamin’s interest in alternative realities which provide new perspectives on the one-way street that society in its current shape has become. Hence, his fascination for dreams ("Breakfast Room", "n° 113", "Mexican Embassy", "Underground Works", "Watchmaker and Jeweller", "Closed for Alterations") for the way in which children perceive the reality around them ("Chinese Curios", "Construction Site", "Enlargements", "Stamp Shop"), and for the marvels and oddities encountered at fairgrounds ("Toys").
Like the soul of the poet in Baudelaire’s famous prose-poem, Benjamin’s motto seems to have been “Anywhere out of this World!” While reading, I was often reminded of Max Blecher’s Adventures in Immediate Irreality and Louis Aragon’s Le Paysan de Paris , two works which express a very similar poetic sensitivity.

In my opinion, even some aspects of Benjamin's peculiar writing style can be traced back to his desire to stagger the entrenched social order into motion. As Susan Sontag observes in her fine introduction to the English translation, Benjamin's sentences "do not entail". It almost seems as if he stops and restarts with every sentence, a style of writing which she refers to as "freeze-frame baroque." Add to that the vivid descriptions of violence and destruction and the often surprising and sometimes disquieting metaphors ("as lovingly as a cannibal spices a baby") and comparisons (between books and harlots), and you get what I mean. Like Baudelaire, Benjamin purposely writes to shock the bourgeois and excite the imagination.

2/ Fragments of a lover’s discourse

While love may not be a topic usually associated with Walter Benjamin, it plays a prominent role in this book. It appears right from the first page in the dedication to Asja Lacis, the Latvian actress and theatre director he had fallen in love with and hoped to be with after his divorce. While she left his love unanswered, Asja did give him the inspiration for a very powerful, heart wrenching metaphor instead:

“This street is named
Asja Lacis Street
after her who
as an engineer
cut it through the author”

In the body of the book, several fragments discuss various dimensions of love: how absence makes the heart grow fonder and separation “steeps the disappearing person in gentle radiance” ("Flag..."), how the person we love “is encountered in endless metamorphoses” in the stories we read ("Antiques"), how love can give special meaning to even the most banal of conversations ("Antiques"), why we have a soft spot for the wrinkles of our loved ones ("To the Public: Please protect and preserve these new plantings"), etc. My favourite fragment on the topic is the following:

Antiques
“Old map. – In a love affair most seek an eternal homeland. Others, but very few, eternal voyaging. These latter are melancholics, for whom contact with mother earth is to be shunned. They seek the person who will keep far from them the home land's sadness. To that person they remain faithful. The medieval complexion-books understood the yearning of this human type for long journeys.”

3/ Writing, reading and the future of literature

Like any other book by Benjamin, One Way Street is also about literature, reading and writing. It includes quotes by and references to Mallarmé, Proust, Baudelaire, Dostoevsky, Edgar Allen Poe, Conan Doyle, Gaston Leroux, the Dadaists, and several others.

I must confess I did not always get what Benjamin seemed to be saying in the more abstract fragments on the topic. The piece about the commonalities between books and harlots, for example, was mostly lost on me, as were the theses on the writer's technique.

However, I very much liked the longer speculative fragments on the past, present and future of the printed book in an evolving world which is being overtaken by leaflets, brochures, advertisements and publicity ("Filling Station", "Attested Auditor of Books"). Benjamin's reflections on the issue clearly anticipate the brilliant essay on the Surrealist movement he was to publish a few years later.

I am also quite fond of the piece about what writing adds to thinking ("Technical Aid") and about the fragment in which he compares reading with flying and copying with walking. As I sense I will never be able to conclude these musings in any proper way, I leave you with an excerpt from that last piece:

Chines curios
"The power of a country road is different when one is walking along it from when one is flying over it by airplane. In the same way, the power of a text is different when it is read from when it is copied out. The airplane passenger sees only how the road pushes through the landscape, how it unfolds according to the same laws as the terrain surrounding it. کتاب متشکل از 60 قطعه‌ی کوتاه است؛ شبیه گردآوری وبلاگ نویسنده‌ای است که درباره‌ی مکان‌ها، عادت‌های نویسندگی، پندها و فلسفیدن‌های روزمره‌اش نوشته، در 1928 در آلمان. و شاید همین دوریِ زمانی و فرهنگی باعث می‌شود خیلی از قطعات نامفهوم باشند. بقول یکی از ریویونویس‌های گودریدز:
«نصوص تعتبر "منعزلة ثقافيًا" إلى حد كبير، إن بسبب طبيعة ما تناقشه، أو بسبب زمن المشكلات نفسها التي تدور حولها التأملات.»

تقریبا همگی دوستان گودریدزی از کتاب تعریف بسیار کرده‌اند. برای من هم عقاید بنیامین درباره‌ی «نقد» خیلی جالب بود و آقای فراستی را به ذهنم می‌آورد!
«آن که نمی‌تواند موضع بگیرد، باید سکوت کند.»
«برای منتقد همکارانش برترین مرجعیت را دارا هستند، و نه مردم. و از آن کمتر نسل‌های بعد.»
«جدل یعنی کتابی را با استفاده از چند جمله‌ی آن نابود کردن. هر چه کتاب کمتر بررسی شود بهتر است، تنها کسی که بتواند کتابی را ویران کند، می‌تواند آن را نقد کند.»
«اهلِ جدل واقعی با همان عطوفتی به بررسی یک کتاب می‌پردازد، که یک آدم‌خوار نوزادی را میل می‌کند.»
«همیشه باید اثبات کرد آرای عامه نادرست است. با این همه آنان همیشه باید حس کنند منتقد نماینده‌ی آن‌هاست.»

خانم سوزان سانتاگ درباره‌ی کتاب می‌گوید: «خاطرات از یک نفر، خاطرات از یک مکان است، و چگونگیِ جاگیریِ او در آن مکان، و چگونگیِ دورزدنش پیرامون آن مکان.»
و نیز از بنیامین نقل می‌کند که «هرگز نمی‌توان کتابی را واقعا فهمید مگر آن که از آن نسخه‌برداری کرد.» که من را به یاد کاری که ما در گودریدز می‌کنیم می‌اندازد!

بنظرم این کتاب متنی باز است برای خوانش‌های چپ.

«آن که خبر مرگ می‌آورد، خود را آدم مهمی می‌پندارد. احساس او - هر چه هم در برابرش مقاومت کند - او را تبدیل به پیام‌آوری از قلمروِ مردگان می‌کند.»
«کیست که حتّا یک بار هنگامی که از مترو به هوای آزاد آمده و قدم به آفتاب درخشان گذاشته، از خود بیخود نشده باشد؟»

برای خواندن این کتاب، باید شناختی از منش و شگرد نوشتاری بینامین داشت. شناخت از پروست (که بنیامین مترجم کارهای او بوده)، شناخت از نوع متفاوتِ گزین گویه نویسی‌ توسط نیچه (که به اندازه‌ی بنیامین دگراندیش، مثل بنیامین آلمانی و مالیخولیایی و باز مشابه بنیامین مورد علاقه‌ی پست‌مدرنیست‌ها بوده) ، و شناخت از انگاره‌ی نگارشی بنیامین (با کمک دو سه صفحه اول از مقاله ی آدورنو در آخر همین کتاب و مثلا فصل مربوط به بنیامین در کتاب خاطرات ظلمت بابک احمدی) برای بهتر و صحیح‌تر فهمیدن و ارتباط گرفتن با این کتاب، که از دید دوستان برای هیچ و همه کس پیشنهاد شده، لازم است.

یک کتاب برای همه‌کس و هیچ‌کس تمام‌عیار. امکان نداره کسی کتاب رو بخونه و جایی از اون مخاطب یکی از جمله‌ها نباشه. هرچند که گاهی احساس میشه ترجمه‌ اون‌قدر که باید رسا نیست؛ گاهی حتی گزینش کلمه‌ها هم نامناسب هست و باعث میشه یه موتور تعویض کلمات به طور خودکار توی ذهن‌تون روشن بشه. راستی؛ خیلی از تک‌جمله‌های کلیدی بنیامین رو میشه تو همین کتاب پیدا کرد. بله، «همه‌ی ضربه‌های کاری با دست چپ نواخته می‌شود» هم توی همین کتاب هست

کتابی بدخوان، که نمیدانم مشکل از کم فهمی خودم، ترجمه ی تحت اللفظی مترجم و یا بیگانگی ام با سبک نوشتن بنیامین بود.
خیابان یکطرفه که در نگاه اول کمی غیرمعمول بنظر می آید، مجموعه ای از جستارهای فسلفی سیاسی و تکه نصیحت های نویسنده است. فرم شاخص ادبی بنیامینِ نا آشنا، جستارنویسی بود. او برای هرکدام از قطعاتش، حد و مرزی سفت و سخت قائل میشد. به قول سوزان سونتاگ: " جستارهای مهم بنیامین جوری است که انگار به موقع تمام می شوند، پیش از آنکه خود را ویران کنند." گویی می خواسته در هر جمله اش همه چیز را جا دهد.
در اکثر قطعات از تشبیهات و استعارات فراوان استفاده شده است:" کتاب‌ها و روسپی‌ها را می‌توان به بستر برد. به ندرت کسی که تصاحب‌شان می‌کند، شاهد مرگ‌شان می‌شود. پیش از آن که عمرشان به سر رسد گم و گور می‌شوند. -کتاب‌ها و روسپی‌ها خیلی علاقه دارند توضیح دهند چگونه این به این روز و حال افتاده‌اند و از گفتن هیچ دروغی فروگذار نمی‌کنند. در واقع، اغلب سیر و چگونگی ماجرا را متوجه نشده‌اند، سال‌ها دنبال دلشان رفته‌اند، و روزی بدن فربه در همان نقطه‌ای برای خودفروشی می‌ایستد که صرفا برای آموختن درس زندگی توقفی داشته است. و ..."
"کودکی که به غذاها ناخنک میزند و دستش از لای شکاف نیمه باز گنجه ی خوراک تو می رود، مانند عاشقی است در دل شب. مثل معشوقی که قبل از بوسیدن معشوق، او را در آغوش می گیرد، دستش از لمس وعده گاه نهانی اش با خوراکی ها محظوظ می شود، پیش از آنکه دهانش شیرینی شان را بچشد."
"اتاق رئیس مملو از اسلحه است، آن تجمل ظاهری که واردشوندگان را در اولین نگاه مقهور میکند. تلفن روی میز یکی در میان زنگ میزند. حرف شما را در مهمترین لحظه قطع می کند و زمان مناسبی در اختیار طرف مقابل می گذارد که پاسخی تدارک ببیند. در این فاصله قطعه های گفتگو نشان می دهد که در اینجا به چه کارهای مهمتری رسیدگی می شود. شما این را با خود می اندیشید و کم کم از موضع خود عقب نشینی می کنید ..."
خودِ بنیامین سبک تمثیلی خود را در سرچشمه های نمایش سوگبار آلمانی چنین توضیح داده است: "تنها لذتی که فرد مالیخولیایی برای خود مجاز می شمرد، تشبیه است و این لذتی توان بخش است."
در انتهای کتاب، مترجم دو نقد را ضمیمه کتاب کرده که شاید در نتیجه گیری و فهم بهتر بی تاثیر نباشد.

در شروع فیلم «گرند بوداپست هتل» مردی که رو به دوربین سخن می‌گوید - و چهره‌اش هم بی‌شباهت به والتر بنیامین نیست - ذکر می‌کند :
" مردم فکر می‌کنن ذهن نویسنده مدام مشغوله و از هر چیز به ظاهر ساده یه داستان فوق‌العاده می‌سازه. در حالی که واقعیت برعکس اینه و مردم برای نویسنده داستان زندگی‌شون رو تعریف می‌کنن و نویسنده کافیه که گوش کنه. "

خیابان یک‌طرفه‌ی والتر بنیامین دقیقاً عکس این نظر را نشان می‌دهد. بنیامین منتظر دریانوردان نمی‌ماند که داستان سفرهاشان را تعریف کنند بلکه با نگاه‌کردن به گام‌های آن‌ها به سمت آبجوفروشی کل داستان را حدس‌ می‌زند.
کتاب درباره‌ی دیدن و نوشتن است و بنیامین با کلماتش به‌خوبی خواننده را همراه خود به گشت‌و‌گذار می‌برد و دنیا را نشانش می‌دهد.
دو مقاله‌ی انتهای کتاب و هم‌چنین فصل اول کتاب «خاطرات ظلمت» از‌ بابک احمدی که مقاله‌ی بلندی‌ راجع به زندگی و اندیشه‌ی والتر بنیامین هست بسیار سودمند هستند.

نوشته های من مانند راهزنانی که در گوشه و کنار راه کمین کرده اند،مسلحانه سر راه سبز میشوند و ما را از اعماق باورهایمان به در می آورد



در نوشته ها و جمله های والتر بنیامین باید تفکر کرد نمی توان از آن به راحتی گذشت و همین رمز آلود بودن است که بعد از تامل در آن باعث لذت میشود.نوشته های والتر بنیامین شبیه سبک نیچه است که مرزهای بین ادبیات و فلسفه را از بین میبرد و همین عامل است که برخی تا بدانجا رفته اند که گویند نیچه و هم چنین والتر بنیامین اصلا فیلسوف نیستند!!!این سبک نگارش کتاب که عنوانی را برگزیده و در مورد آن جملاتی را بنویسیم برایم جالب توجه بود و قبلا ندیده بود.تعدادی از جستار ها برگرفته از رویا های بنیامین است که آن ها یادداشت کرده است

یادمه یه‌بار به یکی گفتم که این، بهترین کتاب دنیاست. خوندنش چندین ماه طول کشید و جالب این‌که از یه جایی به بعد شبیه فال گرفتن بود. هر از گاهی بازش می‌کردم و یک یادداشت می‌خواندم و بیش‌تر از اون نمی‌تونستم. منو در خودش غرق می‌کرد و روزها بهش فکر می‌کردم (و احتمالاً تا آخر عمر منو رها نخواهد کرد). لذت بی‌نهایت بردم از شیوه‌ای که بنیامین می‌نویسه؛ از گزین‌گویه‌هایی که گاه عقلانی به‌نظر میان و گاه کیفیتی پیامبرگونه پیدا می‌کنند. پر از مالیخولیا؛احساسات و تجربه‌های متفاوت...

ارضای جنسی مرد را از رازش نجات می‌دهد؛ این رازی‌ست که نه از جنسیت‌اش بلکه از ارضای آن ناشی می‌شود. و شاید تنها در آن دوپاره می‌شود-و نه گشوده. این راز را می‌توان به حلقه‌یی تشبیه کرد که پای او را به زندگی زنجیر می‌کند. زن حلقه را می‌شکند؛ مرد برای مرگ رها می‌شود، زیرا زندگی‌اش رازش را از دست داده است. این است که موفق می‌شود، دوباره متولد می‌شود. و همان‌طور که معشوقش او را از طلسم مادرش آزاد کرده است، زن او را به معنای واقعی کلمه از «مام زمین» جدا می‌کند -قابله‌یی که بند نافی را قطع می‌کند که از راز طبیعت بربافته شده است.

بنیامین در مسیر فلسطین بود که مجذوب آسیه لاسیس می‌شه و می‌ره سمت -ریگا- مسکو و مارکسیسم. آسیه‌ی زیبا با اون چشم‌های مغرور، غمگین و میخ‌کوب کننده. گاهی فکر می‌کنم که سرنوشت آدم‌ها چه راحت وابسته به چهره‌هاشونه و این‌طوری سرنوشت بنیامین و فلسفه و تاریخ در مسیر چشم‌های آسیه دگرگون می‌شه

هیچ چیز درمانده تر از حقیقتی نیست که همان طور  بیان شود که به ذهن خطور کرده است. این گونه نوشتن حتی به یک عکس بد هم نمی ماند. و در حالی که ما زیر پارچه سیاهی سر فرو برده ایم، حقیقت مانند کودک یا زنی که ما را دوست ندارد از این که جلو عدسی دوربین نویسنده بی حرکت بماند و لبخند بزند امتناع می کند. حقیقت خواهان آن است که در یک ضربه از جایی که در آن غرق شده است ، یا با قیل و قال، یا موزیک، یا فریاد کمک طلبانه ناگهان بدرخشد و به در آید...!

This is a book I like to return to. I have a better understanding of Benjamin's project now than when I first read it. Contrasting Benjamin's Habilitationschrift on the German Trauerspiel with One-Way Street, Susan Buck-Morss writes: "But if the style of these two works is antithetical, the content of the old-fashioned work maintains a striking affinity to the new one. The Trauerspiel study attempts to 'redeem' allegory theoretically. One Way Street does this practically, and transforms the meaning of redemption of the process. Not the allegorical object but the allegorical practice is redeemed (...) It is not the desire to rehabilitate an arcane dramatic genre that motivates Benjamin, but the desire to make allegory actual. The allegorical mode allows Benjamin to make visibly palpable the experience of a world in fragments, in which the passing of time means not progress but disintegration."

Each morning the day lies like a fresh shirt on our bed; this incomparably fine, incomparably tightly woven fabric of pure prediction fits us perfectly. The happiness of the next twenty-four hours depends on our ability, on waking, to pick it up.

Is there anyone who has not been stunned, emerging from the Métro into the open air, to step into brilliant sunlight? And yet the sun shone just a brightly a few minutes earlier, when he went down. So quickly has he forgotten the weather of the upper world. And as quickly the world in its turn will forget him. For who can say more of his own existence than that it has passed through the lives of two or three others as gently and closely as the weather?

How much more easily the leave-taker is loved! For the flame burns more purely for those vanishing in the distance, fueled by the fleeting scrap of material waving from the ship or railway window. Separation penetrates the disappearing person like a pigment and steeps him in gentle radiance.

What is ‘solved’? Do not all the questions of our lives, as we live, remain behind us like foliage obstructing our view? To uproot this foliage, even to thin it out, does not occur to us. We stride on, leave it behind, and from a distance it is indeed open to view, but indistinct, shadowy, and all the more enigmatically entangled.

Un libro perfecto. Un montón de páginas que llevan el espíritu de un hombre impregnado y que al cargarlo en mi bolsillo me dan la sensación de estar transportando a la raza humana en su más hermosa e intelectual dimensión.

El título alude un sentido único pero en su penetrante claridad le da batalla al así llamado Aleph y me dibuja el infinito.

تیر ماه پارسال من شبهایم را با خواندن کتاب فوق العاده "انسان تک ساحتی" از هربرت مارکوزه زیبا میکردم. این بود که تیر ماه امسال هم اشتیاق داشتم کتابی از یک متفکر مهم دیگر مکتب فرانکفورت بخوانم. اما خب این کتاب خیلی توی ذوقم زد و مجبور شدم نیمه کاره رهایش کنم. بله کمابیش متوجه بودم که بنیامین داردزیبایی شناسی نامتعارف خودش را ارائه میدهد و این تقریبا قرینه همان کاری است که مارکوزه میکرد. هر دو در حال شکستن ساختارهای کهنه زیبایی شناسی هستند اما خب بخشهای زیادی از این کتاب بسیار دیریاب و حتی مسخره است! امروز بعد از یک ماه باز کتاب را برداشتم و یک راست رفتم سراغ نقد و تحلیل سانتاگ در آخر متن. در متن سانتاگ یک کلمه هم اشاره به مکتب فرانکفورت نیست. این به کنار، مهم ترین کلیدواژه سانتاگ برای توضیح جهان ذهنی و ادبی بنیامین "مالیخولیا" است! چرا باید برای ورود به جهان دیریاب نویسنده ای که یک منتقد فوق العاده او را فقط مالیخولیایی توصیف میکند زحمتی بر خود هموار کنیم؟ با این حال برخی توضیحات سانتاگ درباره علائق خاص بنیامین برایم جالب بود و برخی از این علائق مالیخولیایی را در خودم هم پیدا کردم. شاید کتاب را به این زودی ها به کتابخانه پس ندهم چون اصلا کتابی برای یک بار خواندن نیست. هدیه ای است از یک مالیخولیایی به دیگر مالیخولیایی ها. البته متاسفانه بخشهایی که مربوط به تجربیات خیلی شخصی نویسنده هستند کم نیستند.

I rarely read non-fiction these days but will make an exception for books which either possess a fictional prose style, or which explore themes I might find interesting. This book seemed, initially, to cover both bases.

Essentially, what you get is a selection of essays on a disparate and myriad number of subjects. It opens with one called ‘on the critique of violence’ which I found enormously dull and without anything in terms of the writing that might draw me in. Additionally, the language was very academic and overdone, laden with terms and phrases which purposely, I felt, obfuscated the topic at hand. Then we move on to an essay called ‘the task of the translator’ which was a little more interesting but not by much. Then the One-Way Street section which is a collection of aphorisms and opinions ranging from the quality of German beer to tax advice. All the way through the writing feels slightly without context and you’re doing your best to enjoy it purely for the expression of thought. That is not what I wanted from the book so it never entirely captivated.

His thoughts on Proust and Kafka stood out as the most engaging while I had little interest in his experiences of cannabis in Marseille and even less regarding his thoughts on the burgeoning artform of photography. As you’d expect from a book like this, it covers a wide range of topics and while some might grab you, others are frankly underwhelming. Even when he does write about something that might draw you in, it’s still a rather indulgent piece that is hard to pin down. I’m not entirely sure who this book is meant to appeal to. Or why his thoughts on any of these subjects are considered of value. As for the prose style, I found it ultimately failed to meet the requirements of justifying having read the book. If only he’d learnt a little more from Proust.

But if these kinds of essay collections appeal to you, then I suspect this is probably a book you would enjoy. They tend to be very hit and miss for me. In the end, the best part of this book was when he (rather accurately) demonstrated the similarities between books and whores.

Books and whores can be taken to bed.
Books and whores – they each have their own kind of men who live off and torment them.
Books and whores love to turn their backs when showing themselves off.
Books and whores make many young.

القراءة الأولي للمفكر الألماني والتر بنيامين
حسنا، لقد عرفت بعض أفكاره، لكني صراحة لم استمتع إطلاقا، فالأفكار مبعثرة بصورة يصعب معها متابعة القراءة بسلاسة، فضلا عن عدم توافر عنصر الجذب، فالعبارات بعضها مبهم، وبعضها الاخر ابتعد تماما عن دائرة اهتمامي
هل العيب في الترجمة ؟
حقا لا أعلم، ربما، وربما العيب في طبيعة النصوص نفسها، التي جعلتني اشعر بعزلة شديدة اثناء قرائتها .. علما بأنني قد قرأت الكتاب بترجمة أحمد حسان، وليس ناجي العونلي، وقد قرأت ديوانا مترجما لأحمد حسان من قبل، وكانت ترجمته جيدة
