Complete 5 Stars, Golden

last book in the first series of Deltora Quest
this one especially is one of my favourite in the all 15 Deltora books

each book they found a gem, it felt like I achieved a trophy for completing another level in a video game & now this one is the Big Boss Level!

end of the journey.
looking for the heir to Deltora
we're back to Del.
back into fire, into the storm.

Shadowlord awaits. & his servants everywhere.
a dark battlefield.

the secrets will be revealed.

*play a mysterious soundtrack*

too many twists landing one after another, double-crossing us!
I swear this book is something else!
WOW!

we're about to see some characters we've met before. they're about to strike. a rebellion is forming. "we win or die trying!"
it was beautiful! I cried a lot.
so much awestruck moments, you, yourself, the reader, let out the breath you didn't know you're holding. (don't worry! this series was written about many years ago or more, there was no such a thing as 'let out the breath he didn't know he was holding.' yet. I just used that to show the awe in this book.) I, myself was full of 'AHHHH...', 'OUUUUHHH...!', 'YESSSS!' & 'OMG!'

I didn't see that coming! (in many cases!) I couldn't predict the ending. (maybe in my first read, a little (by that, I mean only lines!) before the book revealed the secret, I guessed what might happen. but In the end, all the twists were breathtaking!

2019: as I write this review, I'm willing to re-read this, but my last re-read was 2016, so I guess it's soon & I still remember it. (as I re-read it many times.) but I absolutely missed it.
2020: I finally dived back into the world, 8 magical books, 8 colourful days.

Reading this book is really when all the subtle nuances of the previous books in the series TRULY come together. All those hints, all that travel, all those allies and friends made and then coming full circle and going back to where it all began (both the journey of our heroes, and even 16 years before then when the belt was destroyed and the gems scattered).

At the beginning of this novel, Leif and his friends and allies decide that the belt, though completed is clearly not really "functional enough" to truly defeat the Shadowlord, and they work out that in order for it to work as it was promised they need to not only find the heir of Deltora (who has been missing for 16 years) but also have all seven of the clans swear the vow over the gems that they initially provided. Of course many of the clans have since scattered, and one is wiped out almost entirely... but thankfully due to all of their travels they know someone from each of the clans that would be willing to come and renew the vow.

Following the renewing of the vow, the belt glows in such a way that it reveals that the heir is in the very room with them, and the group present realise that it must be Dain; he's from Tora, his mother and father are dead, he's the right age - heck, even his name is an anagram for "Adin", the first ruler of Deltora and the one who first fashioned the belt! But before Leif can give Dain the belt, Ichabod (remember him? One of Thaegan's kids?) bursts in and captures Dain, taking him to Del to be executed by the Shadowlord (which really, all that time attempting to just kill the heroes who have the belt and only NOW are you gonna do something flashy? Really?), leaving behind Dain's dagger.

The troup of heroes and allies realise that they have to go to Del and save Dain because Dain as the heir, is clearly the only one that can make the belt work and save Deltora. Unfortunately on their way they are waylaid a bit, and then end up splitting in order to get into Del (and also because there's a clear mole somewhere among the supposed heroes and they don't know who to trust). Unfortunately after getting to Del and finding Dain about to be executed they find to their horror that nope, Dain isn't the heir. He's the mole in the resistance, and is in fact one of very few Grade 3 Ols. In fact, he was never taken by Ichabod at all, but instead staged a capturing and stayed behind as his dagger to spy on the resistance and make sure they wouldn't be able to bring their plan to fruition. After a battle in which Doom is heavily wounded and Dain is killed, Leif and co. take Doom to the Forge (Leif's old home) where they attempt to heal him, only for all of them (save Leif who was in another room at the time) to be captured by Grey Guards and taken to the palace.

Leif manages to follow and take the secret route into the palace, and upon getting right to the end and about to take the belt to Jasmine (who they have since found out is the REAL heir) he realises that half of the reason the belt didn't work was because the gems had to be in the right order - and not just the order that Leif and co retrieved them. In fact, they spell out one rather interesting word... the name of the kingdom... D, E, L, T, O, R, A... with the first letter of each stone. Upon rearranging the stones as appropriate, and having a few issues with being attacked, Leif puts the belt around his waist to make it easier to take to Jasmine... and then unleashes the spell, revealing to all that it was HE who was the heir to Deltora all along.

There was just SO MUCH that happened in this, and I am so in awe of how much Emily Rodda can put into a short novel, and how many slight things can truly be put into books that really are only slightly bigger than novellas. There's just so much that happens and just... wow. I really did LOVE the way that all of this was concluded, and how there was just so much uncertainty over who was the heir, why the belt wasn't working, what still needed to be done, etc. It really did bring together just so many people from so many different places and it was just really really great.

4.5 / 5 for me c:

With the prior 7 books so great I must admit I was prepared for a little bit of a let down in this final book. I couldn't see any way she could top there other books. But I was truly surprise and would give this one a six if I could. Emily Rodda did in fact come through with a fabulous ending and one I did not expect. And the suspense was there all the way until the end and the final secret was all it should have been and more. A wonderful read. But be sure not to read this one until all the other seven books have been read. I hope to read this series again.

A NICE CONCLUSION THAT DIDN'T FULLY SEEM WRAPPED-UP (Keep reading to find out why!)

PREMISE SERIES: This series revolves around Lief, Barder and Jasmine. Lief is a prince who (in book 1) went through a corronation. During siad corronation he was given a cereminonal belt called the belt of Deltora. This belt contains 7 Gems, forged by the beings of the land and hold great powers. During the corronation it is discovered that the gems are missing. So Lief and Barder set out to locate the 7 gems. In book 1 they meet Jasmine who joins them. They also discover that an evil Shadow Lord has taken over the land and the only way to defeat him is to find all 7 Gems and reattach them to the belt.

PREMISE BOOK: In this one with all Gem stones recovered Jasmine, Barder and Lief need to locate the true heir. The one that can weild the completed belt and finally, finally defeat the Shadow Lord. However, when the triplet stumble upon a written note, hope starts to dwindle. The note tells them something they were not expecting. Can they find the true heir and defeat the shadow lord? Time will tell in this gripping conclusion.

MY THOUGHTS: I enjoyed this book on the whole. I loved the plan that lief and the others had set in place once they had discovered the note and also enjoyed the lead up to the final battle. However, the conclusion didn't seem like a conclusion to me. Then I found out that there is actually a DELTORA QUEST SERIES 2 -and- DELTORA QUEST SERIES 3! Both will be added to my SAS (Serious About Series)List for 2023! Thank you Emily Rodda! On the whole I truly enjoyed this series!

4 Stars

What an ending 😭 the way I was still SHOOK and SHAKEN about all the twists and turns even though I've read it was WILD. With the end of the series, it was also so emotional seeing everyone try to find the heir to the throne. First, She was just SUCH a fun ride but I do wish that there were more details at the end about how but I suppose that's what the next two series are for. Either way, I'm so happy to have reread this series again and I'm immensely looking forward to the next instalments.

So much of this story hinders on Lief’s ability to read.

Also I remember Lief and Jasmine kissing at the end of this book and they… didn’t? Guess 10 year old me was just desperate for romance. Happens to the best of us.

What a wonderful conclusion to a fantastic series. The final 6 chapters or so were filled with so many reveals and were so exciting that my son didn't let me stop reading. And since I wasn't disinclined we read the last 50 pages or so in a rush of anticipation.

A very satisfying conclusion. Highly recommended for readers of all ages, although occasionally I thought "ooh this is a little brutal for my 7 year old". But what I want to say is that younger kids can enjoy it together with their parents, if they don't scare easily. Older kids will enjoy it immensely, and adults (me!) can also enjoy its cleverness and action-packed originality.

I enjoyed the series and gave this one the highest ranking because I felt like in towards the end the author started making things a little more fun with a few surprises. This whole series was a great read to be done with a son or daughter who enjoys fantasy. Nothing too dark, nothing too scary. Just entertaining.

Video Review – https://youtu.be/ZPw3Yolsc3U
This is my review for the whole (first) series, but I’ll keep it short. This was a re-read, as I wanted to revisit one of my all-time favourite fantasies from my childhood, and I was INSANELY surprised by how well it held up.
The story is long and riddled with very common tropes, but they were handled creatively and will be the first time a lot of reader’s experience said tropes, so who cares. If you read this as an adult, and you’re willing to not take it too seriously and just have fun, you won’t regret it.
The bond that the 3 core characters, Lief, Barda, and Jasmine form, is definitely the highlight. There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing unlikely (and arguably, incompatible) companions team up for a loooong adventure, and then end up family by the end.
The monsters are what most people will remember most from this series, as they are all so different and present wholly unique challenges for the heroes. That and the AMAZING cover art (by Mark McBride).
I go into way more detail in my video, but seriously, I, a full grown man, LOVE Deltora Quest, and I’m not ashamed to admit it.

SN: I remember loving this series when I was a kid but I don't remember if I actually finished it. I might have moved on to another series by the time the last book was published. So here goes my attempt at rereading the entire thing!

YES! I loved this ending! Absolutely loved it!
As a whole, I'm going to have to give this series 5 stars despite some of the lower ratings that it earned along the way. The ending was perfection, the character's growth was on point, and the world-building was excellent. I'm glad that I took the time to reread/finish this series from my childhood.

This was a wonderful conclusion! Seeing Lief and the rest of the team finally going to complete their quest was great. I love how this book really ties things together. There are many callbacks to earlier books, especially the first, and lots of threads from throughout the series come together here. It really brings things full circle. Definitely one of the best in the series and a great conclusion overall.

The belt has been put back together, the friends find themselves in search of the kingdom's heir, and my goodness is this final book full of twists. So many, in fact, that by the time you know the true ending is revealed, the story is over.

Being one of, if not the first, fantasy books my Mom ever read aloud to me growing up, it was time for a return back to Del. I loved some of this conclusion, but it isn't my favorite of Leif, Barda, and Jasmine's adventure. What a series, and a fun return to my past!

WELL, now! A fitting end to a fun romp, for kids AND adults. This one is filled with surprise after surprise, the clues to which were there all along. The True Heir of Deltora is finally identified (nope, not givin' the name away, wouldn't be prudent, not at this juncture), several characters are not, or perhaps more than, who they may appear, and all this wrapped in a coming together of the Tribes and fights with bad guys and the Big Bad Guy (the Shadow Lord, of COURSE!) In contrast to all the other Deltora Quest books, this one gets Four, rather than Three, stars, because of how it gets wrapped up, ketp me happily going on. A good time, definitely recommend the series.

OK, on to the "Artemus Fowl" series!

Wow! What an amazing story! This was so much better than I had ever expected it to be. Action, adventure, friendship, danger, and tons of surprises!

There are so many moments throughout the entire series where you find yourself in complete and utter shock. Either there was an amazing plot twist, or something happens that makes you wonder if this book is really appropriate for kids. Ms. Rodda does not pull any punches! But, at the same time, this is a perfect series! If you want kids to fall in love with fantasy, you have to start them off with books like this. They're good stories, and yet so much more. I don't read a lot of fantasy, but I can't stop gushing over how much I loved these!

I enjoyed watching as everything fall back to place at the end. The whole saga was such a fun read. The last book had me on a chokehold the whole time. It was amazingly good. I couldn't put the book down! Everything was good about it. It was full of surprises and twists. Although I remembered a key moment from the end, I still enjoyed it as it was my first time reading it.

the last oneeee

1. return to del
2. dread mountain
3. valley of the lost
4. the maze of the beast
5. the forests of silence
6. the lake of tears
7. the shifting sands
8. the city of rats

all seven gems have been found and i was so excited to see how the story would progress, with the mystery of who the heir was

i had so many theories and i was wrong so many times. i was really happy that lief was the heir since it honestly made the most sense and the most full circle moment, but i had deleted this option from my mind in book 1😭 i thought it was jasmine, even dain - don’t even get me started on dain

he wasn’t even real???????? i felt so betrayed by this my god, he actually had started to grow on me too. he turned into a DAGGER? this mf. his loss actually saddened me, i can’t believe i didn’t think of it from the start

DOOM being jasmines dad 😭😭😭😭😭 i did say from many books ago that i loved this man, but i actually cannot believe he’s her dad. not only that, he’s tHE REAL JARRED. mindboggle after mindboggle with this one. and king endon was really the fake jarred stop… and that’s why he always had that resentment telling his childhood stories🥺 because he resented himselfffff ahhh AND TO THINK HE JUST DIED????? i will not forgive miss emily for this

the stress of getting all the gems together and to WORK was way too much. my heart sank when it didn’t light up and nothing worked, even after all the tribes came together (can we acknowledge how wholesome this was? getting everyone together, everyone flying and travelling to them just to help, seeing everyone from past books 🥲🥲 sobbing)

the grade 3 ols did not disappoint and turns out there was actually a whole heap of them everywhere and RIGHT UNDER OUR NOSES and we didn’t know. i still stand by saying that they are one of the most fun creatures i have read about - ALSO PRANDINE/NOT PRANDINE BEING AN OL THat JUST ALWAYS TAKES THAT SHAPE!!?? so cool

steven and nevets <3 such underrated characters i love their little caravan and silly songs (also their dynamic reminds me a lot of venom pls)

THE LITTLE MISDIRECT THAT THE HEIR WAS DEAD!!!!?? my heart dropped into the dephths of my ass. this was so scary honestly, thinking we went through this whole journey for nothing

obviously was very relieved finding out it was not true, and finding out that the resistance was strong (even w a potential spy) in the dumps😭it’s a smart plan tbh, even from the shadow lord faking the death to drop everyone’s hopes

BARDA NEARLY DIED - i absolutely would have stopped reading this if he did. he is my safety, my comfort, and you’re telling me he nearly died because the floor plants ate him. no

um the shadow lord? girl? you just vanished allllllll this time, you have been the biggest scary threat and you just.. poof. no fight even? i am assuming we see a lot more of the shadow lord in the next series, but his ‘defeat’ was not that satisfying

dooms revelation to jasmine that he was her dad was so very wholesome

lief has grown to become so switched on and smart and i love him for him - figuring out the order of the stones (DELTORA DUHHH) was genius and i honestly didn’t think of it

the ending wrapping up with barda lief and jasmine to rule over deltora together was very wholesome. but i will die on the hill that endon (old jarred) should have lived just to have another chance at least

i am happy i have completed this and i know i will end up reading on once i fall into another slump. thank you ali one again for getting me into this world 🥹
