An entire world is revealed to Jack, where living for pleasure becomes fighting for survival. And the only woman he wants may be the one he cannot have...
COMPLICATED CREATURES is a mesmerizing, labyrinthine romantic suspense that will leave you wondering: Do you really want to know everything about the one you love?
I'm pleasantly surprised that this was so good! After a 2 month long reading slump, I was starting to give up on picking up books from authors I'm not familiar with, however, Complicated Creatures exceeded all my expectations and really blew me away. Maybe romantic suspense is what I need to binge on for awhile.
The writing in Complicated Creatures is absolutely beautiful. It was such a treat to read. The leading lady, Samantha Wyatt, is a heroine you don't usually come across. She has the attributes of a typical hero of any genre - A-type, ass-kicking, confident, powerful, authoritative, etc. And by ass-kicking, I mean it quite literally. She's like a female James Bond - are you starting to see why this is so awesome? It's refreshing having an alpha female who can beat someone to death with their own arm (that's usually the hero's job when he goes on a jealous bout). Now, Samantha isn't completely hard-ass, she has an emotional vulnerable side that she tries to shield. But there's a man desperately trying to get under it - Jack Roman.
Don't think that just because Samantha is an A-type typical hero gal that Jack is the quieter typical heroine counterpart. No, he's definitely still an alpha male, he's just not in the military/guns-blazing/kick-your-ass department. He's in the play with my millions and make some more department. So what happens when two strong-willed, powerful characters collide? Great things, folks. Great things.
ARC provided by the author in exchange of an honest review
What a wonderful surprise this book was! I truly enjoyed it. It's a great story with some really complicated characters, especially the heroine. There is everything I like in it - hot romance, fast-paced action, complex story with some unexpected twists and turns, great cast of supporting characters and powerful, engaging writing style.
It's the first in a series and it has a cliffhanger ending of sorts - the story of Sam and Jack is not completed which was an unpleasant surprise. Now I'm anxious about the next book.
What a pleasant surprise this was! When I was sent a copy of the this book for review I was hesitant to pick it up since I am not a big fan of billionaire type of stories. Now, after finishing it, I can only say that I'm very happy I chose to give it a try because I ended up loving it.
For a debut novel it's very a very well developed story written in a sophisticated, engaging style. The author has a style of her own - complex, rich and sensual descriptions mixed with a lot of action.
I was surprised how in-depth she went in the discussion of military operations, real estate business practices, martial arts, Italian cuisine and so much more. I did like the careful attention to detail we see all across this book, but the information became overwhelming at times. It made things look too good to be true, taking away from the otherwise realistic nature of the story and the characters.
That said, I really liked Sam and Jack and all the rest of the supporting cast. It's a densely populated world and it took me some time to figure out who is who and to keep track of all characters. Sam definitely stands out among most contemporary romance heroines - she is strong, independent, and at the same time loyal and caring. She is perfect at presenting a particular image of herself - self-possessed, composed, in control. but deep in her heart things are not exactly like this.
Jack was just the perfect hero - smart, sexy, successful. He fell for Sam and he fell hard. It was a surprise for him but he was open and honest, willing to risk his heart and take a chance. The relationship was not easy with Sam keeping Jack at a safe distance, never truly revealing herself to him.
The thriller element was very engaging and kept me involved throughout the story. There was a particular plot twist in the end that I didn't see coming and it makes me very anxious about the next book in the series.
While it's true that both characters can be described as complicated creatures, I'm not a fan of title, it makes me think of a paranormal story and there is nothing like this here.
My biggest disappointment, in fact my only one, is that it's not a completed story of Jack and Sam. I knew this is the first book in a series but I expected the next ones to be about other characters/couples. My consolation is that the next installment is to come out some time this summer according to the author's website.
I'm glad a took a chance on this book, it's a well written, complex and intriguing contemporary romance with some military/suspense elements and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys such stories. Alexi Lawless is an author I'll be watching for in the future.
I was beginning to think that maybe I was losing my love of reading due to a lengthy slump where I just couldn’t find anything that gripped me. But then I was contacted by the author about reading & reviewing her series and after checking it out I jumped at the chance. It took me about 3 days to finish Complicated Creatures, which is much quicker than the usual week or two I’ve been spending on other books, definitely not my best reading time but a HUGE improvement considering how big of a reading slump I’ve been in lately. So I have to thank Ms. Lawless for her help in reaffirming the fact that YES I am still very much a bookworm!
You get the best of everything in Complicated Creatures. The story line is absolutely intriguing, much like your favorite crime thriller or suspense novel, yet still delivers all the feels you want in a romance novel with just the right amount of steaminess to keep you satisfied and coming back for more. Right off the bat I fell in love with this stellar cast of characters. They all have different personalities but they work so well together and really do complement each other.
Samantha is well off financially, as are most of the characters, but they don’t flaunt it. It’s not all about name brands and living a luxurious lifestyle. They come off as real, everyday people who just happen to have extremely successful careers. It was such a breath of fresh air! Domineering millionaires seem to be a trend, but Ms. Lawless brings something entirely different to the table. So kudos for that!
I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s writing style and the pace of the story. She creates wonderfully vivid images with her words, making it pretty hard not to become obsessed. But with that being said, I do have some minor issues to bring up…
I found it a little awkward having so much Italian dialect and no translations to follow. Granted the translations can be found at the back of the book but who is really going to interrupt their reading to flip to the back of the book then flip back to find their spot? It’s not an easy feat to be done on a Kindle, and I personally wasn’t doing it. So that kind of got on my nerves. To each his own though, maybe nobody else had a problem with it. Personally, I want to read with no interruptions. I want a smooth transition from sentence to sentence, page to page. I don’t want to get hung up something like that.
Also, there’s just one little thing about Sam that had me baffled. I loved her for the badass, no nonsense, independent, business woman that she is. However, when it came to the emotional stuff she seemed like a completely different person, it didn’t flow. You never really knew how Sam would react in romantic situations b/c her lovey-dovey side didn’t match up with her everyday persona. I don’t know if that makes any sense, but I just felt like there was a disconnect with her character. I’m not saying a strong woman such as Sam can’t show emotion, I’m saying it has to be done in a believable way for her character. Otherwise, it just seems odd and out of place.
The story pulled together nicely at the end leaving you with a bit of a cliffhanger. Not an unbearable one, but it will definitely keep you invested in the series. I can’t wait to see what direction this story goes, and would definitely recommend it!
What a wonderful surprise!! This is not my usual fare. I'm not usually one for suspense and action as I really like to focus on the love story and the interpersonal relationships in a book. I loved this book. Couldn't put it down loved it.
First things first: The love story...Samantha and Jack. Both totally hot as in H-A-W-T. I usually fall for the male counterpart in the love story. In this book, I totally fell for Sam. She's amazeballs. Totally badass, take control, tough, smart. Pretty much everything I love in a dude. Plus, she's gorgeous and maternal with her guys. Just love her. Don't get me wrong, I love Jack and would totally swoon for him, but Sam was the star for me. They have a highly complex relationship and there is some mystery and unexpressed feelings between them. Definitely not a boring, sweet, traditional romantic relationship. Yay! Side note: Jack's Italian background and the Italian interspersed in his speech was a real panty-dropper for me.
As for the story, it was really exciting. I'm the kind of girl where if a book takes to long to get to the good stuff (i.e. sex,) I tend to lose interest. So not the case here. There was so much other stuff going on and we were meeting fantastic characters left and right, that I almost didn't miss the hot sex. Almost. When it did show up about halfway through the book, it was really steamy and worth the wait. The secondary characters were really lovely too. I enjoyed meeting all these commandos and the family members were funny and endearing as well.
Consensus: Alexi Lawless knocked it out of the park. The prose is just gorgeous. I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to good writing. Crappy grammar and stilted prose tend to distract me from a story. Not a problem here. The book was a hefty length as well, without it dragging in the slightest. There is a bit of a cliffy ending which hurts a little, only because I want to keep reading and see what happens. This is a great book!! I will definitely be tuning in for the next installment. Hurry it up girl!
So I never ended up taking the time to write a review on this first part because if you read this you'll know, there's no time to write a review. You HAVE to go on to part two without stopping! lol So here goes... Samantha is our leading lady. And she is definitely a leader! She is this enigma. When you meet her she just draws you into her circle and you just have to know her, and that's where Jack comes in and is left spinning around her like she is the sun to his universe. But he's not the only one she does that to, all of her men that serve with her are down right loyal to the death and she is their sun also. Jack: he is our playboy, he grew up the son of a politician and made his way in the world to become a wealthy man with too much time on his hands. When Sam moves into the suite across from him he is undeniably drawn to her. Carey: He is Sam's right hand and in a sense brother. He has known her all his life and has stood by her through thick and thin. Rush, Talon, & Marvin all of Sam's boys all with specialized backgrounds from the military and the mailroom ;) Lightner is the owner of Leviathian security from across the pond in London and her biggest competitor. He is evil in more ways than one and does not know how to keep a promise. There are of course others that stand out in this story like Jaime (Jack's younger brother), but unfortunately because I did rush through on to the second part, I can't remember where one ends and the other begins....but can I just say Sam is deep, and troubled, but wants to love and be loved. Her history though has demons that won't be laid to rest and it keeps her from exposing the half of herself to Jack. Jack unequivocally falls in love with her and even with all of her untold secrets, but in the end gets burned for his affection and willingness to just except her as is. Which leads me to Wesley Elliott . Now don't get me wrong, its nice that "fate" brought them back together, but boy will you leave it in the past...ok I guess you never get over your first love, especially someone like Samantha. This story has a crap tone of suspense, romance and action. Hell the first chapters had my blood pumping!! But in the end we are left with a cliffhanger, which leads to the beginning of my review, you can't stop especially since I'm late to this party and the second part is already out. But I digress again...Wes leads us into our love triangle and I don't like it. I guess its on to the second parts review.....settle in for this read, its a wild ride!
I don't like to give a review to tell you what a book is about. I like for you to know how I felt about the book. You can buy it to find out what it entails. Excellent-Entertaining book with Everything. This book was so good, I couldn't put it down. I dearly loved the characters they were so well developed. It was difficult at first to like Sam but she was awesome. Jack is by far the most amazing. He seems so real and down to earth. I can't wait to get to know Wes. This book has it all. Action, drama, sex, but not just for the sake of having sex in a book. It was moving and amazing. Great job by a great new amazing author.
This is a well crafted story and I absolutely enjoyed reading it from start to finish. It's an absorbing and attention-grabbing work that had me engaged from the beginning. The story flows from scene to scene effortlessly, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There's an abundance of well illustrated scenes that really make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that's something I really look for in a good book.
This book took me by surprise. I am not a huge fan of romantic suspense. I spend most of the book trying to figure it out and can't just relax and enjoy. When offered the chance to review this book I read the blurb and gave it a ton of thought. There was just something that called out to me. Never having read Alexi Lawless before it saddens me to think I could have missed out on all that this author and book is. Ms. Lawless never goes for the easy and obvious attempts to suck you into the intrigue. It's a slow burn that appeals to your intelligence, as well as your sense of adventure. The characters are well developed and multi-dimensional without being an open book. Hence the intrigue.
The Romance: Jack is used to having women fall at his feet. Not only is he very wealthy, but he's sexy as hell and pretty charming to boot. But, he's met his match when Samantha Wyatt moves in. She's all kinds of badass and mysterious. When this couple comes together sparks fly. In and out of the bedroom. Samantha has huge issues that she has yet to work through, so she runs hot and cold quite a bit. Jack, for the first time in his life, is head over heels and not sure how to handle all of the secrets that Sam has.
The Characters: I loved these characters so much. The secondary characters were just as great! I didn't feel like Jack ever came across as cocky, even though he pretty much had the world at his fingertips. He showed great vulnerability without losing his hot as hell masculinity. Samantha was not nearly as good at showing vulnerability, but she never came across as too hard or harsh. I loved that she had no problems celebrating her femininity all the while capable of bringing a grown man to his knees without breaking a sweat. Sam's friends and the men that worked for her were amazing! They made the story. Their humor and approach to their job and life was great to read. Jack's Italian family was hilarious. They were accomplished and well-known, yet never uppity or entitled.
I have only one complaint about this story - the cliffhanger. I hate cliffhangers. Typically, I think they show a lack of confidence on the author's part in her story and writing abilities. If this is the case with this story, Ms. Lawless have no fear your writing more than speaks for itself. No cliffhangers necessary. If this isn't the case, then please, please, please have mercy and don't torture me with the next one. Don't let the cliffhanger stop you from reading this book! Believe me you'll kick yourself if you miss out on Complicated Creatures.
This is an INCREDIBLE, STELLAR, PHENOMENAL debut novel by Alexi Lawless. Her descriptive writing is amazing and well researched, and I’m in LOVE with her style. Lawless took me on a rollercoaster ride that left me breathless and wanting more. Complicated Creatures: Part One is not only a romantic novel but also a jet-setting story full of suspense, humor, and a supporting cast you will fall in love with.
Samantha Wyatt is a powerful leading lady. She had “the polish of money, education, and class…the confidence that came with personal power. But she didn’t just have power, she had control. And she knew how to wield it.” But don’t let this fool you…Sam is a good ol’ Texas girl. “I’ll have you know I may have been daddy’s little girl, but daddy had his little girl baling hay, fixing fences, and driving cattle while I was still in grade school.” She grew up to be a strong and influential woman. She’s the whole shebang and it’s for this reason that Jack Roman falls for her and he falls HARD.
Jack Roman is a real-estate tycoon from a prominent political family. He’s the type of man women flock to and he has no problem landing the woman he wants until Sam crosses his path. Sam is different, and from the very first moment, he’s intrigued. But Sam keeps him at distance—she has a mysterious past and her job, it’s not for the faint of heart. “The way I live, there’s an exponentially higher chance that I don’t make it back.” She’s used to taking her pleasure without having her feelings involved but Roman is different...
Take this emotionally packed ride with Sam, Jack, and all their friends—you won’t regret it. Complicated Creatures is a must read! *I was gifted a copy by the author for my honest review*
I am just going to go ahead and start by saying that Complicated Creatures is, hands down, the best romantic thriller I’ve read in a long time. I have already bought the second part, Hell or High Water, because I simply can’t wait to see how it all ends. The characters are fantastic and so far from the typical cliches you see in this genre. Samantha Wyatt is an absolute take charge kind of woman and a great example of a strong heroine. You can’t help but admire her and the way she navigates a male dominated field to become one of the best. Jack Roman is a surprising breath of fresh air when it comes to wealthy playboys. I love how his character is so well rounded and surprisingly grounded. The supporting characters are also amazing. As for the story line, Alexi starts off with a bang that you ride all the way to the end. There is a perfect balance of romance and action to keep you on your toes. She does shift point of view between Sam and Jack throughout the story, but it’s well done and doesn’t lead to confusion at all. Her style of writing and language make you really understand the emotions flowing between the characters. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone.
What could be better than a story full of plot twists, seduction, excitement and the strongest female lead I've ever seen? Nothing that's what. This is a rare book that sucked me in with the first few pages and kept me hooked. I would find any free moment to read this exciting story that kept me wanting more. And now I desperately wait for Part 2 to come out!
Complicated Creatures shows the lives and the change of 2 very strong lead characters who have a supporting cast of just as intriguing characters. You will not know what is going to happen next, there is no predicting the next line. Sam isn't portrayed as the perfect blonde heroine in this story, she is dark, sexy, and above all strong. I find myself wanting to know more about her and Alexi Lawless gives you just enough to keep you waiting for more. Its been a long time since I finished a book in 3 days, but this one did it.
HOLY SHIZNET... How did I miss this?? GENIUS. Finally a female heroine who doesn't make me want to roll my eyes. It's a major cliffy ending, but I'm already onto book 2. This is me right now:
"Romantic suspense thriller" hits the nail on the jead
Great story with a strong female character for once! I love how the love story weaves in and out without being the main focus of the story but adding to the drama. Alexi has an easy to read writing style but knows how to get you hooked on the characters and the story

Krissy's Bookshelf Blog Tour Review:
I am so impressed with Alexi Lawless. Complicated Creatures had a serious Magic City build up for both the plot and the characters. I loved the intensity, I love the personalities, and I especially loved all the mysterious back story and the build up that is hard to find in stories these days. Alexi Lawless does a phenomenal job creating a story with so much life and detail that you can't help but want more. Alexi intelligently weaves a story every reader will love. Alexi serves it up page after page and fills your plate with so many twists and excitement that you will be hooked instantly. This is Part One of a Love Story with an Action/Adventure Background. Alternatively it is a thrilling page-turner of a story in which two of the central characters happen to fall in love. No red-blooded male reader would not wish to change places with Jack, and female readers will likewise change places with Sam (Samantha) though they may not always approve of the way she treats Jack. Sam is an ex-special forces girl, expert marksman with a rifle, brilliant martial arts expert in all disciplines, particularly Judo her first choice. She is co-head of a firm specialising in bodyguard work, including finding kidnap victims and recovering them. She is from an oil-rich Texas family, but with a firm of over one hundred employees, she is now rich in her own right. Jack is a qualified architect and financially very successful property developer. Beautiful women meet him and then immediately lust after him and now, for the first time he meets a woman who does not, ------Sam. I recommend this to you both for the love story where the two main characters are believable in everything from action to speech, and for the brilliantly written action sequences when Sam and her team are at work. The main story is complete, except for the cliff hanger at the end when you will be left wondering just how the problems keeping Sam and Jack from –Happy Ever After will be resolved (or indeed if they even have a future together). Find out in Part Two of Complicated Creatures.

Wow! What a pleasant surprise! Like a lot of the previous reviewers I wasn’t sure what to expect form this book but I was wrong to be wary. Complicated Creatures is a great read with some fabulous characters and impeccable writing!
Jack Roman has kept his adjoining penthouse empty for a long time now waiting for his brother to finally decide to move, but after so long he’s starting to give up hope. When his friend says he’s found the perfect neighbour for him, he finally gives the go ahead to give it to someone – besides S. Wyatt sounds like a decent enough guy.
Well that was until he found a gorgeous woman swimming in their shared pool – S. Wyatt, or rather Samantha Wyatt. His new neighbour was a woman! A very attractive one at that. As they get to know each other it becomes clear there’s a lot more to Sam than first meets the eye. She’s strong and completely badass – the kind of qualities we’re used to reading about in our leading man.
I won’t go into the story much more as I don’t want to give it all away but there are so many twists and turns in this book – such an amazing story! Fast paced, full of drama and hot as hell! I really loved Sam and her relationship with her team – so many great secondary characters in this book! Having Sam as the strong leading lady she is made for such an interesting dynamic and I really loved reading her story. As for Jack he’s pretty damn awesome too! Really loved the chemistry between these two.
So much more than just an ordinary romance; riddled with drama and suspense this is one captivating read from start to finish. And the cliffhanger! I can NOT wait for more!
Complicated Creatures: Part One is an adventure Romance Novel told in multiple third person POVs. Samantha Wyatt is a strong-willed and driven woman with a complicated past and career that keeps her closed off from most of the world. While trying to find some stability and settle down, Sam meets Jack Roman, a wealthy playboy full of charm who has never been told no. The relationship between Jack and Sam begins as neighbors, but as the intensity grows, so do the secrets that Sam's been trying to hide from the world and herself. Just when Jack thinks he has found the one, Wesley Elliot, photographer and Sam's old college boyfriend, and danger's from Samantha's job begin to interfere. Part one is a great introduction to the series and story line, and it pulled me in from page one. The fast pace and development of the characters kept my attention and I could not put it down! I loved seeing multiple sides of the story from the characters POV and the dialogue was written wonderfully. Along with the main characters, the side characters felt fresh and added to the overall story-line. I would recommend this book to fans of strong female characters, romance, and adventure.
Got an advance copy from nightowlreviews.com for an honest review.
Complicated Creatures - Part 1 is truly amazing and it caught my attention from the very beginning. Samantha is a woman that you just don’t want to fuck with, period, end of story. Not only does she know Jiu-Jitsu but she fights very dirty. She has no problem kicking your ass and making you remember. She’s rich, she was in the NAVY, did interrogations and now she is in charge of an insurance company that specializes in protection. She just moved into a beautiful penthouse next door to Jack. He owns the place.
Complicated Creatures - Part 1 is a really great read and I can’t wait for part 2. I’m excited to see how the story ends.
This was an amazing book. Sam is awesome and Jack is a pain in the ass. I found it really funny how pissed off he got when Sam started to treat him like he did the other women he was with. Right away he was possessive and even went so far as to call one her old lovers and put across that she was not only taken but happy, they weren't even together yet. He is just arrogant.
Sam is one of the sexiest female characters you will ever read about. I hate that she's not real because she kicks ass. She looks out for the people she cares about and her employees. She was an interrogator and travels all over the world to protect people. Now that she's caught Jack's attention there is no letting go. He is slowly creeping under her defenses but there are things she can't tell him and he's pissed about it. I want to hit him over the head. All in all great read and I cannot wait to read part 2.
If you want a stay-up-all-night thrill ride, this is the book for you! Finished in a whopping 24hours I loved it so much! Sam Wyatt is a heroine unlike any other. Completely engaging. She starts out as a bit of a mystery but as you unravel each layer, you start to see the depth to her and it’s incredibly appealing. Jack Roman was also surprisingly good. I came off Goddess Rising so I was Team Wes all the way until Complicated Creatures. Wes is excellent as the returning lover, and this is one heck of a triangle, but Jack is a very serious, do-not-mess kind of guy that’s just delicious. Not your typical alpha billionaire. This book was a really refreshing change from the norm of stepbrother, MMA and rich-guy-saves-poor-girl romances that seem to be dominating today. It was good. So good I’m going for seconds!
I got this book free on Amazon a couple of weeks ago. I was hooked straight away and downloaded the second book before finishing part 1.. It was refreshing to have an alpha female as part of the story. Sam Wyatt reminded me of a female James Bond/Jack Bauer. I could really feel how close Sam was to her colleagues. Loved her romance with Jack. Wished that Sam would have opened up more about her past, but we got a glimpse into this at the end of the book. Loved the cliffhanger ending. A great book Alexi Lawless. Look forward to reading more o your books in the future.
Will Jamie pull through? What will become of Carey? Will Jack be able to look at Sam in the same way and can he bring himself to forgive her?
This was/is an amazing read! Alexi Lawless is the shit! This book/series has it all; hot sex, thriller, suspense, detailed characters a great f*in plot my god she used everything plus the kitchen sink here, and none of it was over done! I am so hooked in this intrigue here. And of course we are left with not so much a cliff hanger but a whoa, where are you taking me..Alexi has kidnapped you and drugged you with her writing, that your not even certain who you are anymore..or what is good or evil and where or what line you crossed. Excellent, excellent work..More stars for the girl with the hot laptop!!! Can't wait for more..!!
The psychological depth of human behavior, scintillating tension, and tons of James Bond-esque action makes this a book that can't be put down. I feel this compelling need to know what happens with each of the many dynamic characters. Right now. I'm so excited that the second one is almost here. I do hope though to have some closure at the end of the second, even if the third continues some character arcs I'm really hoping for a happily-ever-after after, what I'm sure is going to be quite the roller-coaster to come.
I have read mystery, suspense and romance novels, but non this WOW! Samantha, a strong independent woman who has been molded into who she is, because of her past. Her commitment to her team. The deception from the love she thought would help her through her lost. Yet she survived by closing her self off and guarding herself. Jack a woman's dream guy falls in love with her. Can he keep her? Or will her past prevent it? Wow,Alexi Lawless has outdone herself in this great book.
That moment when you invest 381 pages of your reading life on a book to find out there's soooo many cliffhangers left at the end that two thingd happen.
A) You're REALLY upset because you wanted at least one of the cliffhangers to have some type of resolution.
And B) You are extremely hesitant to read Part 2 because what if that one also ends in a ton of cliffhangers too.
Overall Samantha and Jack's story was intriguing, not to mention a little hot and steamy. She's a tough chick and the interplay with Jack had me questioning/wondering how the things we hold onto affects those around us.
Samantha is a closed and private person. A trained operative to protect the wealthy. Jack, she thinks, is a lothario. How wrong she is. She holds back from him, knowing he loves her, and slowly warms to him, but not soon enough. He's known something was going on that she refused to tell him about. And now he's about to find out what...
The whole story comes about because neither Samantha or Jack trust themselves to be deserving of love. Jack wants Samantha to love him as much as he loves her. I believe she really does but cannot trust love enough to give it away. I found the translation numbers annoying. Mostly because I wanted to continue with the story and not go hunting for the Italian to English translation. Hopefully the next installment will give us a resolution to everyone's trust issues.
