I'm not impressed by the first Asako Yamashiro's novel I'd read, so this short stories collection of her comes as a welcoming surprise.
These interrelated stories are set in Tokugawa Japan, with a pair of travelers visiting one remote village/town after another, looking for tourist attractions such as hot spring so they can write tour guidebooks out of their experience. However, travel could be a dangerous business in the Tokugawa era, especially when one of the travelers had a rare talent of always getting lost, which resulting the pair of friends to encounter one strange thing after another, going into one outlandish place after another.
Each story has a very different but clever plot twist, and the main idea behind each story is just equally clever and gripping, I also like the air of Tokugawa Edo the author had managed to create, so I give this half adventure, half fantasy book five stars.
Each journey he took ended up in a strange nowhere-to-be-found small village. Almost-dead embryos found by the dirty riverside, fish with human face, hot spring resort where you can see ghosts, and more... All kinds of spooky stories with twists can be found here in this book. And the final story is actually quite sweeeeeet ~
