Fascinating read about NYC-its Bowery Bums, Gypsies, Fulton Fish Market Vendors, fishing in & around NY(oystering, clamimng. even a chapter on fishing off Stonington, Ct. A story about an old pull rope elevator in an old hotel in NY-how they got it to work. Gives full descriptions of many of NYs characters-basically stories about the Bumbs, slovenly living, infected rats that are imported from Europe on barges! Very detailed descriptions of people & places in & around NYC in the early 20's. An excellent research book on NYC 20s life & fishing!

It's "Up in the Old Hotel" by Joseph Mitchell. Other stories are included but not in the main title.

713 pages-good read to pick up & put down & pick up!

I have to say that over 600 pages of essays was a rather daunting task, but his writing was so engaging I just kept "plowing through". I found myself looking up some of the people and places that he wrote about. He made me wish that I had been born at the turn of the last century in New York City. I will probably return to some of these stories in the future.
