Having just read and reviewed Saving Liam (book# 1) this was a very smooth transition into the follow up to Liam and Justin's story. All the drama from the original book was firmly embedded in my memory so I was able to snuggle down with my endless supply of cups of tea (and the odd nibble, Lol) and get straight back in to see how they were faring in their relationship, which was complicated more because of poor sweet Liam's past history at the hands of his horrendous, manipulative ex, Cord, who under the guise of false love had coerced him into a life of porn then pimped him to another sexual predator, a real shit who put him through a terrible ordeal that ultimately tipped him over the edge. Luckily Justin was there to help Liam through it all, first as just a good friend but later, after quite a few setbacks that included a tricky relationship for Justin...as a couple. Their romance tentative because of Liam’s deep issues with penetrative sex. Something, that even with Justin he can't reciprocate outside of a few kisses and cuddles, but still there's a bond between them which helps strengthen them as a couple emotionally.
The book starts six months after the end of 'Saving Liam' and they're now living together properly, working through the knots in their relationship because it's early days and even though they're happy together generally, things still aren't perfect. Returning Justin's love in the emotional sense isn't a problem, there's no doubt about his feelings for his understanding and patient partner, and vice versa, but physically they aren't quite there yet. However at this point of the story Liam is definitely in a better headspace, they're taking baby steps in bed—still no full on sex but foreplay is improving and personally he's taking extra care of himself; exercising and taking a bit more pride in himself, pride that had been lost during his time with Cord.
"...The former wisp of a kid now had rippling bulges of muscle in all the right places.
He hadn't done it to attract attention. It was all about survival. Liam didn't want to be a scrawny, helpless kid anymore. The next time someone tried to dominate him he intended to give them a fight."
That is until Eric, a sleazy new colleague at the upmarket restaurant he works for, recognises him as 'Angel' and propositions him at work. It's the thing he's been dreading the most, the thought that someone would finally realise who he was and out him. He tells Justin about the incident, and they try to ride the storm together, Justin doing all he can to get Liam through it without causing him any undue distress, but panic, genuine fear and shame begin to take their toll, leading to a series of events that end with Liam out of a job again and pretty much back to square one in terms of skittishness and the low self esteem that had affected him before, but all the while Justin stands by him, gently encouraging, loving and tenderly comforting him and supporting him through the highs and lows that follow. Never once does he lose patience with his young, conflicted partner even though it puts most of the progress they've made,so far, back a few steps in their relationship sexually....
Reviewed for THC Reviews "4.5 stars" Skin Deep is the second installment of D. P. Denman’s Saving Liam series, which follows the characters of Liam and Justin throughout. As the story opens, they’ve been living together for a little while, and Liam is slowly trying to heal from his abusive past. He’s been employed as a server at a five-star restaurant for six months, and it’s been going well. That all changes, though, when the restaurant’s newest employee recognizes Liam from his porn films and propositions him. Liam tries to ignore him and shrug it off, but the guy won’t take no for an answer. He intimidates and assaults Liam, causing a set-back in his emotional recovery. Liam fights back and the restaurant manager is understanding, but when word gets out about Liam’s past, he feels like he has no other option but to quit. While Justin is supportive and happy to foot all their bills until Liam can find a new career path, Liam is reluctant to be dependent on a man because of everything that happened to him in the past. Instead he applies for a job as a tablet boy, selling private dances and such, at a strip club. However, when he realizes how little he’ll be paid and how boring the work is, he decides to audition for one of the open slots as a go-go boy. He figures that, as a strip club dancer, if anyone finds out about his past, they likely wouldn’t look down on him like trash. He also insists on working the women’s side of the club, thinking that if the patrons get handsy, it won’t freak him out as much as it would if they were men. However, his expectations are challenged in unanticipated ways. Not to mention, when Justin plans a nice weekend getaway for them, it brings up memories that Liam doesn’t want to think about. Justin and Liam face some difficulties, but if they can stay true to each other, things could start to get better for both of them.
In the previous book, Liam got a really rough start with his boyfriend exploiting him in porn films and then prostituting him without his consent, which led to him being raped by the john. However, with his friend and neighbor, Justin in his corner, Liam was able to get out of that life and begin to heal a little. He and Justin have grown in their relationship, but there are certain sex acts that are still off limits for him, making him fear that Justin may one day leave him if he get can’t past his hangups. Having the new employee at the restaurant recognize him from his old life is also his worst nightmare come true. That’s why, when things escalate, he feels like he has to quit, knowing that he couldn’t deal with his fellow employees staring and thinking the worst of him. Wanting to be at least somewhat self-sufficient and also thinking the strip club is a place where he wouldn’t be judged for his past if anyone found out, he applies for the job there and later auditions to become a dancer. Even though he’s only working with women, it still proves rather difficult at times to deal with their innuendo and attempts at touching him. Then when Justin takes him to the hotel for a little getaway, it has unintended consequences that set back his recovery. Liam makes some strides forward in this book, starting to make his own decisions even if Justin somewhat disagrees with them, and becoming a little more independent. He also grows a bit more adventurous in bed even though there are still things that are hard limits for him right now. But as good as things are with Justin, there are some challenges Liam must face. For only being a year into his recovery, though, I thought that he handled things pretty well, and I look forward to seeing him grow even further in the remaining books of the series.
Justin is still the same supportive boyfriend and best friend that we saw in the first book. He’s fully aware of Liam’s history and knows all he’s been through, so he’s very understanding about his hangups and respectful of his boundaries. Justin would love to expand their sexual relationship, but he keeps his own desires in check, knowing that if he pushes too hard, it could ruin all they’ve built together so far. Even though Justin would like to see Liam pursue his education and get a well-paying job that he genuinely likes, he understands and supports Liam when he decides to start working at the strip club instead. We don’t really get much additional character development for Justin in this book beyond seeing him interacting over video chat with his mom, who is very accepting of his relationship with Liam, and one new thing that happens for him at the end of the story. I still adored Justin, though, for how open-minded, loving, and gentle he is with Liam.
Overall, I very much enjoyed Skin Deep. I liked seeing the progression in Justin and Liam’s relationship. They’re so good together, very loving and trusting toward one another. Justin is about the only person Liam genuinely trusts and understandably so. I hope that Liam can experience further emotional growth in the remaining two books of the series. He’s made strides forward, but he can still get down on himself and have feelings of unworthiness. A part of me wishes the author would include some therapy for him, as in real life that could certainly prove helpful for processing everything he’s been through. Still, Justin is a great sounding board and someone who gives his all to Liam. He’s the perfect boyfriend, always selflessly thinking of what Liam needs. Generally speaking, this was a pretty low-key book that doesn’t have a great deal of excitement. While there are a few challenges for Liam, they’re overcome with a minimum of conflict and don’t have far-reaching repercussions. The story is mostly about Justin and Liam growing their emotional connection and their sexual intimacy. The love scenes are fairly frequent, but more sensual than genuinely spicy. A few more details, especially what they were feeling in the moment, wouldn’t have gone amiss, but I wasn’t necessarily unhappy with them. I just really love Justin and Liam as a couple and very much look forward to finding out what comes next for them.
As a beta reader, I loved this book. I hadn't read Saving Liam, and that didn't interfere with my enjoyment of this story. But I do recommend that you read Saving Liam first, because if you don't, you'll want to read it afterward. :) So you may as well read the books in order.
The second installment finds Liam slowly recovering from his past abuse, with Justin providing a safe and loving environment for him to grow in. Still haunted by his past, Liam reclaims control of his body and his sexuality in a surprising but believable way.
Denman handles this difficult subject with insight and sensitivity. The characters seem real, and I hope to see more of them.
This series keeps getting better. Liam is trying to get a normal life back. He gets a job as a go go boy which he enjoys. Justin is still the most perfect boyfriend. I can't wait to read book 3.
*If you haven’t read Saving Liam then you need to read it before you read this one to fully understand what is going on.*
D.P. Denman brings us the continuation of Justin and Liam’s story. Skin Deep really shows us how deeply Liam’s past has affected him. This man is still as broken as ever, he’s damaged and he knows it. He believes he deserves everything that has happened to him because in his eyes he’s nothing but an ex porn star, a piece of trash that deserves to be thrown away. However, we get to see how much Justin’s patience and love have helped him to try and rebuild his life piece by piece. He has a very difficult road ahead of him. When things start to settle down and it’s looking like Liam is healing from his horrific past something happens that brings all his fears and insecurities to the forefront. This causes a backward slide in the progress that Justin has tirelessly and patiently worked on with Liam. It felt like for every 2 steps Liam took towards a happier life something would trigger all the bad he lived through and brought him 3 steps back.
Liam is desperately trying to change his life, to make it better but at the same time he’s very guarded and afraid. He doesn’t trust anyone except for Justin. Even though Justin makes him feel safe and loved he still doesn’t completely have his walls down. He has rules when it comes to touching which makes their sex life for the most part very unconventional. At least in my eyes. Liam has major boundaries Justin has to work around but he’s happy enough with what he gets as long as he is with Liam.
“He knew how to be patient but he wasn’t a saint.”
Let’s be honest here, Justin is nothing less than a saint. He always puts Liam ahead of himself. Never complains about being denied or having to settle for the smallest pleasures. I mean seriously at times I was sitting here thinking this man deserves so much more than he’s getting. I know he doesn’t want to push Liam because that would ultimately force him back to a time where he’d be reliving the nightmare of all he’s been through, but how much can one person take?
Throughout this story my love for Justin was only solidified and as much as I felt bad for Liam I wished we could have seen him heal a lot more than we did. His new job brings out a different side to him, he has more confidence but at the same time he’s still the same old broken kid we met in Saving Liam. I think I almost felt worse for Justin then I did for Liam in this one because his love for Liam is so deep. I just wanted Liam to be able to give himself completely to Justin. Don’t get me wrong I completely understand why Liam can’t do certain things I just hoped over time he’d really believes in himself more. I wanted him to really see that he deserves more than he thinks he does. That he can have a really healthy relationship especially with Justin because that man is nothing short of perfection.
I’m not sure if we are going to be getting a 3rd installment to their story but I really hope we do. I really love how we get to see how deeply Liam’s past has cut him to the core and how it seriously affects this thought process and interactions with the world. I would love to see Liam finally put all his demons to rest. He’s getting there but he isn’t quite there. I’d love to see this man who has been put through hell finally have the proper HEA he deserves.

This is the second book in the Saving Liam series and picks up with Justin now living with Liam and making a start with their new relationship. Liam has escaped the clutches of his evil ex Cord who made him appear in his web porn movies. However it appears the happy ending we were left at the end of Saving Liam is not so as young Liam still has major issues to come to terms with in order to be able to move on.
The new job he landed in the upmarket restaurant comes to a crashing halt when a fellow server, Eric, recognises Liam as Angel, the star of the online porn movies. Liam panics and feels he will never be able to escape his past, however he surprises himself when he makes a stand at Eric’s treatment of him and fights back. When a further retaliation is made by Eric distributing a poster to all his colleagues, Liam realises he needs to quit. It’s after he has done so he is left wondering what is left for him to do and will he ever be able to find a job where he is not constantly looking over his shoulder.
Justin continues to be the most supportive and wonderfully loving boyfriend that there ever was. He is so patient and understanding with Liam, it’s beautiful to read. When Liam then lands a job in a strip joint he fully supports Liam as it is his decision to make but he still has his misgivings. Liam however justifies that with this job nobody would be shocked should they find out his former starring role.
I loved how Liam cut ties with ‘Angel’ and created his new persona ‘Damon’ which in a strange way gave him more confidence that enabled him to move past his inhibitions, especially in relation to sex with his boyfriend Justin. However there were still triggers that lead Liam back to being the scared and insecure ‘kid’ with his fears of his past with the ‘cookie cutters’ and men from his dark period when he was made to do vile things against his will.
It was, at times, painful to read the ‘one step forward and two steps backwards’ progression of Liam but it became apparent that Liam was moving on, even if he did not recognise it himself. His reinvention of himself was the start of his new journey. I’m glad the author did not rush this just to skip the reader to a HEA, it was great to read an actual believable account of one young man’s struggles to overcome his pain of the past. He is such a sweet but broken man but with the strength he is given by Justin’s constant support and belief, it is a gradual step change that is lovely to witness.
The ending left the reader with a happy place to finish but I still feel there is further to be gained in another book. I definitely would love to see the laughing and smiling Liam that we were given glimpses of to become a more normal occurrence for him. I also want Justin to get what he needs. Now that would be so hot to read! Another great storyline to be taken on in the continued saving of Liam. Four stars.
In this second book of the “Saving Liam” series, progress is still slow going for Liam in trying to attain the things one might associate with a “normal” existence – things like being able to go places without feeling afraid or being hassled, or being able to enjoy sex without fear of it triggering a panic attack. He continues to be victimized in two ways: one is that other men try to knowingly take advantage of him (still recognizing him from his porn star videos) or even unknowingly take advantage of him (they’re drawn by his looks and assume he’s interested); the second is that he lets the actions of others dictate the course of his life vs. fully standing up for himself (I was hoping for some righteous anger to surface to stop the cycle).
A sliver of salvation comes in the unlikeliest of places – a different job under the broad umbrella of the sex industry. What you say? That can’t be right! But, it’s true. This job doesn’t involve actual sex, just showing off his body and his dance moves in a club that caters to gay men on one side and women on the other. I’m sure you can guess which side Liam works on. His rationale for choosing this job after a fiasco that ends his restaurant service job is that no one will care about his porn past (the thing that causes him endless angst).
Justin continues to be the sweetest and most supportive boyfriend to have ever walked the face of the earth. He has the patience of a saint and persistence of a bulldog. For his sake as well as Liam’s, I was happy to see their situation improving even if it was slow (but steady).
I’m not sure if this is the end of the line for these guys or not. I know that I wouldn’t mind visiting them one more time in hopes of seeing a stronger “happy” in their future despite being more than satisfied with what they’ve accomplished. It might be my desire for justice (perhaps even revenge) speaking, but I still want to see the sleazebag ex from the first book have to pay his dues! This is a great series with great characters that didn’t have to work too hard to make me care about them.
Following on from Saving Liam, we catch up with Liam and Justin as they attempt to get over Liam's past, and just move on. But can Liam really get over it? will he push Justin away and be left alone?
I have not read Saving Liam, and this second instalment is billed as a stand alone to that. I can say I did not miss anything by NOT reading Saving Liam, excpet a few more details on how Liam and Justin were feeling at that time. What happened it Liam, and how Justin saved him, is explained in this book and so, I would agree to the stand alone status.
Some very difficult subjects dealt with in this book, child porn, gang rape, and the aftermath of those are the main stay of this book. Its painful to read, not in a written way, just dealing with it. BUT its written well, and the suffering that Liam is putting up with, and to a certain extent Justin too, comes across on every page. Its M/M, and there is sex, yes, but its not overly explicit, the scenes between Justin and Liam are beautifully written, especially dealing with Liam's inability to fully engage in sex, near the beginning, it could all be classed as foreplay. Justin patience is outstanding, and he knows that it will take time, lots and LOTS of time for Justin to be able to take Liam as Justin wants, but Justin loves Liam and he will wait, however long it takes. What I would have liked, it that to have happened in this book. While Liam takes Justin, it doesnt happen the other way round, and i think that would have made the book for me. It could also do with a little editing. Justin's mom was a character who I would like to have seen more of.

Skin Deep is the second book in a series. It starts off with Liam, who escaped an abusive past, now living together with Justin, the man of his dreams. But Liam’s struggle with his past, in which he played in web porn movies, under the influence of his ex-boyfriend, hasn’t come to an end yet. He loses his job when a server recognizes him from the porn videos, and threatens to harm him with that information. After a few struggles back and forth, he realizes he has to quit, and starts to wonder if the past will ever let go of him.
The book relies heavily on characterization, and that’s where it shines. Liam is struggling, and it’s obvious from the start. He goes back and forth between the scared kid he once was, and the confident adult he tries to become. His struggle feels real, and I felt for him. It was painful at times to watch how, even despite all his efforts, things just didn’t work out. Justin was the ever-supportive boyfriend, kind of like a rock to lean on.
Liam’s journey to find himself, and to become the person he’s always wanted to be, starts at the unlikeliest of places – the place that scarred him, seemingly forever. I thought it was a strange choice, but it ultimately turned out to be the right one for him.
The writing was decent, and the characters carry the novel. Sometimes the topics are quite heavy, and this book is obviously not for everyone, but I enjoyed it. I’m not sure if this is the end for our two protagonists, but I wouldn’t mind reading more.
You must read Saving Liam before you read this book. This starts where book one finishes.
Justin and Liam are now together. Liam is struggling to put his past behind him but it never fails to rear it's ugly head. I love Justin. He's just what Liam needs. He's kind, considerate and has lots of patience.
This is a really gritty emotional read. In both books I found myself putting it down and having a breather. I'm so looking forward to what this author has in store for us.
A fabulous follow up to Saving Liam. Liam has come a good way since the end of book 1. Still he has a good distance to go before he will ever be completely comfortable with a physical relationship. Justin is, as always, perfect in his patience and understanding. Though there are moments of frustration he takes a straight forward approach to discussing it with Liam which does cause some guilty feelings, but ultimately strengthens their trust and their relationship.
