In 1972, Rose Wolf and Tommy Henderson are living two very different lives in separate New Jersey towns. Rose enjoys hanging out with her friends and dancing with the flag swingers in Irvington, while Tommy struggles as the son of two young parents who got pregnant in high school in Rockaway Borough. When Rose transfers to Tommy's school in her junior year, their spark is instantaneous. They spend the rest of their high school days smitten with one another, but their post-graduation plans find their futures heading in two opposite directions.

While Rose heads to Los Angeles to attend design school and immerse herself in the fashion industry, Tommy stays in Rockaway to take over the family business. The two lose touch and move on with their respective lives, but they never forget about their first true love. Through other relationships, career highs and lows, and years without contact, Rose and Tommy can never quite get over one another. More than three decades later, a spontaneous trip to Rockaway sees Rose reuniting with Tommy, now a widower, and the two can't help but feel that maybe fate is intervening to give them a second chance.
